HipHop Gets The 3rd Degree - June 29, 2004 By : Nima
The Pedestrian is walkin’ it like he talks it on this hookladen, jeep ready album slated for release by Blak Ice Records. Third Degree, who hails from South Central Los Angeles, grew up living right around the corner from Dub C of Westside Connection. “I went to Hiphop High,” says Third. “Washington High School was where I came up. A lot of hiphop people have gone there, like Dub C, Crazy Tunes from The Maad Circle, YoYo, DJ Alladin, and Sir Jinx, who DJ’s for Xzibit, and more. Crenshaw High may have had the sports people locked up, but Washington has had the music people.” Third Degree is destined to be the next hiphop alumni to speak with authority. With rhymes constantly flowing out of every pore of his being, Third is definitely at no loss for words. The album, which is largely produced by the musically eloquent Yabie, is tightly packed with 21 serious tracks, including the runaway single “Do My Thang.” This quotable album is consistent all the way through, with no fillers or throwaway tracks. “I like real writers who have subjects and topics,” he professes. “I’m a purist kind of guy.” Third points out that Yabie’s work “sounded like music, it didn’t just sound like beats. He had a whole band of people available to play guitar, bass, all that. He thinks in a very musical way.” In this manner, he compares Yabie to DJ Quik. “He’s got a unique style. I can’t quite figure out his formula.” The single, "Do My Thang," will be out soon. The battle-ready rapper’s name came his basketball days. “We called ourselves the Burn Unit,” he says. “We had names like Thermostat, Third Degree and Lava Rock.” Third’s government name is Wayne Guillory. “Like guillotine. It’s French,” he explains. “All my people come from Louisiana.” Either way, the world is his. It’s Wayne’s world, as he’s young, gifted and black, and prolific to an extreme. His father was a coach, who lost his life to cancer. “My mom was real concerned about me after he died. That year, she asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I told her. Had my father lived, I would have definitely not gotten those turntables!” he reminisces, shaking his head with a smile. Third became obsessed with hiphop with gospel-like devotion, and he began interpreting the world through the mind of a rhymesman. It seemed that every event in life was suddenly transformed into a searing rhyme by the verbal prodigy. The prolific Third notes, “The single “Do My Thang” is a way to introduce me to people. I felt it was representative of where I was coming from. It lets people know a couple things about me, and I feel it describes me,” explains Third. “My raps give people another view of Los Angeles. People who don’t live here think it’s all either gangbanging or Hollywood. L.A. is not all about being a gangsta. I just wanted to make this record about the regular person in L.A,” he concedes. Third believes there’s a lot of pressure to rap about banging, because some of the earlier great L.A. rappers before them. “People who don’t even gangbang,” he points out. “I think rappers should talk about what they do. If you gangbang and you rap, talk about gangbangin’ in your rap. If you sell crack all day, talk about selling crack all day. Whatever it is that is you. That’s what “Do My Thang” is all about. Just be yourself. If it’s you, do it. If not, don’t do it.” He adds, “Some of my best friends bang. But that’s them. It just never occurred to me to do that.” As far as his home front, Third’s neighborhood is well-known for being Crips territory. “NHC, Neighborhood Crips. Them and Watergate Crips. They’re kind of borderline,” he observes. “Slip from Comptons Most Wanted, he stayed in the Watergate for a while. As far as the NHC, Dub C, Cube and Crazy Tunes stayed there.” He comments that there’s just one little street that separates everybody. The intersection on the album’s cover is the nearby corner of Imperial and Western. However, in many ways, Third’s songs reflect corners all over the country, so his rhymes hit home with those who are both near and far. Jay Z and Ice-T may have “99 Problems,” but Third says he has “Problems” of his own. “The reason I wrote the song “Problems” is that for some reason, people always come talk to me about things they need to get off their chest. So I listen a lot. One day I was arguing with my mother, and that was one of the things that came out. I’m not saying don’t talk to me about your problems. I’m just saying come back in a while, because I have mine to figure out.” Some of Third’s own deepest, personal predicaments are revealed in the song, including the fact he has a handicapped brother. The inspired “Stylistic” is one of Third’s favorite tracks on the album. “I was listening to “Betcha By Golly Wow,” and I like to make up words to songs, so that’s how that came about. It’s basically telling people I have a new style here in L.A.,” says Third. “I studied niggas’ style and found what not to do, it’s the total opposite, I rock it better than you, whoever you are niggas bite and get trophies, a Grammy for their best Tupac on Karaoke.” “Hit This 40” is a party song, and it’s also an anti-gold diggers song. Its 40 proof melody came about much in the same way, but it comes from a Chaka Khan song called “Night In Tunisia,” which Third used that part for the song’s chorus. Going even deeper, he explains, “It’s actually a remake of a Coltrane song or something like that she was doing.” Observes Third, “The culture of Los Angeles is gangs, and people get influenced by it a lot, like the white t-shirts and all, so it definitely isn’t all hip hop here. However, I can take you to places here that are definitely hiphop. But yes, a lot of it is gang culture here. People in the parks out here aren’t breaking and rapping against each other; it’s probably drinking and smoking weed, and a fight is going to break out any minute. But still, there is definitely a hiphop community in this city.” The disc’s determined track “The One” is Third’s way of saying, “I’m entirely here for hiphop.” With “Favorite Shade Of Brown,” it’s all good, and love comes in all shades to Third. “Eye Candy” features Pupa Don, one of the illest West Coast dancehall cats. There are a slew of other radio driven songs on the album, and the Pedestrian is no doubt, walking tall. You’re now at that intersection of hiphop beats and masterful rhymes, as the Pedestrian is making his way through your speakers.

Introducing Krook - June 23, 2004 By : Nima
I would like to Introduce you to a up and coming R&B artist (Unsigned) out of Southern California, "KROOK". Krook has been around for awhile on the underground circuit working with artist such as Kurupt, Roscoe, Bad Azz, 40 Glocc, Latin artist Capone', Nite Owl, Snapper, Kid Frost and many more. But Krook has branched out on his own with a completed album, album cover and ready for press under his cousins Independent label Soulyric. I'm not going to hype him up, I'll let the music speak for it self. Krook's looking for a warm R&B label that's self contained, artist to work with, meaning writting, appearing on tracks and just networking with artist period. Most of you will ask the question "why isn't this cat out, his music is off the chain"!!, well Krook has been overlooked, but also things happen for a reason, and we hope that a label will have the ears and eyes to realize that. Krook has been spoke on in New York alot lately and he's getting radio spins in Syaracuse New York!!!! top mix show, that's a start but not enough!!!!!
I don't want you guys to read a book, so let me send you to krooks E.P.K. site for you to view, we're adding things daily so check back frequently. I hope you enjoy Krook, and the definition of Krook is "DON'T LEAVE YOUR LADY UNATTENDED" Think about it!!!!!!!!
Check out the site by clicking HERE. There you can check out his bio and much more, and listen to three songs. You can download the three songs directly by clicking below too:

Lil Flip Responds To T.I. Dissing Him - June 23, 2004 By : Nima
Dirty Dirty rapper T.I. who was in the news last week for shooting an unauthorized video in prison, had dissed Lil Flip on stage at Atlanta's Summer Jam, calling him out for calling himself the King Of The South. Flip now responded to that, here is what he had to say:
"“I hear T.I. is on stage with like 20 of his men supposedly ready to confront me when it was my turn to take the stage. First of all, I was late and it was supposed to be over. At that point the police and the venue people kept us off the stage, they were gonna shut it down and leave. Dude is on stage mad, claiming he’s the King of the South, and that I said he wasn’t. Everybody knows the real king of the south is Scarface. All I gotta say is that I don’t even KNOW him. If we wanna talk who’s hotter, I’ve been all over the mix tape scene, now I’m all over the mainstream scene, off the strength of my own hustle. A lot of people have been coming at me, and I really don’t have the time to address all of them. Like they say; mo money mo problems. That’s all I gotta say, Ima keep doin’ me regardless, I got a new hit record out. I’ve been in so much beef in my life, I’m happy to be here and still be living. I don’t know if dude’s been through half of what I’ve been through. I’ve been living with some real demons in my life, and niggas that know my story know what’s up so I don’t need to do anything extra to draw more attention to myself. I mean, I hear he’s calling out my peoples Luda and DTP too so I guess it’s just part of the game for him, a publicity stunt to move some more units. I guess he’s just mad cause I f*ck with everybody else in ATL but him. Look at my album; I got Pastor Troy, Luda, Killer Mike and Baby D. ATL is like my second home. And I guess he’s mad ‘cause he did a verse for the Game Over remix and I didn’t use it. Bottom line, I’ve put in my time. If he wanna take it there, I mean he got a team, I got a team too, so its whatever. Otherwise, go find another way to sell records ‘cause I am selling records”"
Let's hope this gets squashed and the united force of the south doesn't start breaking up like the West has been... To me though, the only person who can call himself the King Of The South is Scarface without a doubt.Discuss This Topic

Lil Flip's new single "Sunshine" - June 23, 2004 By : Nima
Ya'll know about Lil Flips new album "Can U Feel Me" which has been out for a little while with the huge single "Game Over". He is now set to release the follow up single, called "Sunshine"! Sandy Lal, Flip's manager and attorney of Kingpin Entertainment Group, had the following to say about the single: ""This track is a collaboration with Lil' Flip and our newest artist Lea, just signed to Kingpin. It's produced by The Synphony. Lea's sweet voice combined with Flip's playalistically catchy rhymes really takes this song over the top. The single speaks for itself; it's already at over 3000 radio spins and will be going to Top 40 this week. I asked Flip to collaborate with Lea and he just jumped right on it. That was no surprise; she is as talented as she is beautiful. As for Flip, he gets up close and personal on "Sunshine", he's still a player but not on the courts on this track."
And Flip himself had a few words about the song too, ""Sunshine is a little different from what people have heard from me. I wanted a smooth track for the ladies this time. My manager Sandy originally did the song for Lea but then decided to put me on it. When I heard the track, I got right on it and wrote it in fifteen minutes! I wanted to lay down the rules for dating a rapper like myself. Since I'm always on the road, she has to be patient. I'll definitely be in touch once I get into town but I can't stick around for too long. I can't be a steady boyfriend because of my schedule, but when I have the time, I will definitely give it to my babygirl. I touch on these things in the song. I think everyone will appreciate "Sunshine", both the males and females."

Soul Plane With A Slow Takeoff.. - June 11, 2004 By : Nima
From contrabandit.com: Despite an all-star cast, the recent release Soul Plane has crash landed with movie goers grossing less than 12 million dollars at the box office. And while many people have pointed to the film's highly stereo-typical characters as the cause of the backlash, the movie's director, Jessy Terrero, attributes the lack luster performance to good ol’ fashion bootlegging.
"It killed us," said Terrero in a recent interview with Daily Variety . "When 50 Cent called me to tell me he was watching my movie, I knew it was a big problem " Terrero thinks that bootlegged version is from an early cut he finished in November. In recent months the FBI has crackdown on both Internet and street piracy to prevent unlawful distribution of digital media.
There is no word on whether the bureau is after Soul Plane’s hijackers.

Bad Azz Is A Free Agent! - June 8, 2004 By : Nima
As of this week, Bad Azz left his label D3 and is now officially a free agent. Mr. Bad is currently shopping for a deal for his new album and his imprint Double Dolla Sign Records. "I ain't gonna go for no OK deal, or no coo deal no more, I done been through that shit and in the end it's all fucked up. I need something good, because I KNOW i got a SMASHING album ready to come out, for whatever label I go with! It's some smashing shit, I guarantee you!", he said. Big Hutch Official Press Release - June 8, 2004 By : Nima
A few days ago we brought you a preview song from Big Hutch aka Cold187um's sophomore release "Live From The Ghetto". If you missed it, here it is again:
Big Hutch - Ride Like A Gangsta.
Thanks to Phyllis Pollack, we now have an official press release on the album, it's out today, make sure you go out and cop it! Here is the article:
"Big Hutch (aka “Cold 187um”) of the legendary West Coast supergroup, Above The Law, returns with his long awaited second solo release, Live From The Ghetto. Above The Law was one of the seminal, G-funk laced groups on the Ruthless Records label, run by the late, legendary Eric “Eazy-E” Wright. Hiphop heads last heard from Hutch back in 1999 when he released his first solo debut album, Executive Decisions, on his independent label, West World Records. With this album, Hutch brings melody back, with his time-honored brand of West Coast hiphop.
Hutch’s signature G-Funk sound can be found on classic hiphop tracks like 2Pac’s “Until The End Of Time,” The Dogg Pound’s “The Dog Pound 2002,” Snoop Dogg’s “Dead Man Walking” among many others. Suge Knight had even tried to enlist the production services of Hutch, but the two could not see eye to eye on a myriad of things, so 187 chose to leave the situation.
Live From The Ghetto is not merely an album title, but it is the state of mind, as well as environment, which Hutch has always shared in, and it permeates through this highly-anticipated album.
Destined to be noted as an essential work, Cold 187um decided to remake the classic Curtis Mayfield song, “Give Me Your Love,” but rather than just sampling it, he released it as a duet, featuring both the late singer’s trademark falsetto, a voice that was such an influence on his own delivery, and added his own vocals to it. The stunning combination of these two voices marks a special, flawless vision in hiphop, production that has 187’s own stamp on it. Hutch explains, “I wanted to pay homage to Curtis Mayfield by adding my style to it and telling a story similar to which his original was based. “Give Me Your Love,” from the Superfly soundtrack, is about a brother who is on the daily grind, doing what he’s got to do, but knowing that whatever happens, his woman his got his back, regardless of the outcome.” He adds, “Curtis Mayfield was always one of my favorites, and he did it all. He wrote, produced and sang. When I was coming up, my uncle, Willie Hutch and my Dad Richard Hutch, wrote for Motown. They wrote things like The Mack, Foxy Brown, the Jackson’s, the Miracles. I experienced the Mack, Motown, all of that, because of the work my dad and my uncle did for Motown. I was brought up on that sort of player, smoothed-out music. So this is paying homage. When you listen to it, it sounds like I was in the studio with Curtis Mayfield. It sounds real natural.”
Among the album’s guests are Above The Law, Kokane and upstarts Young Madd, Geno and Viet Nam.
Hutch is known as one of the original creators of G-Funk. Bringing Above The Law projects like the EP, For The Funk Of It, and the influential Black Mafia Life. Hutch remains understated, modest and extremely humble, despite his major role in the creation of G-Funk. “When we were making music in the early days at Ruthless, and I was producing, I wanted to do things for the vibe of it, to influence people. The music was new, hiphop, if you were around back then, you know one thing---just everything was kind of new. It was more so an experimental type of thing. When I was doing G-Funk, which was that all we were doing is adding a funky, new, melodic vibe to hiphop, because at the time, it was more metal sounding, you know, like NWA had this more metal sounding, hard-edged, cut throat feel to it. But Above The Law was more funky, funky but real smoothed-out. So when I started adding that into the scenario of hiphop, that’s when we coined the phrase for what we called our sound. At the time, Warren G slept on my floor, in my apartment. This had to be ’89 or ’90. We’d be like, ‘This is some G-Funk, gangsta funk.’ We were working on Black Mafia Life.”
2Pac lives on as a witness on that album. Hutch notes, “I remember 2Pac asked me, ‘Your music is funky, it’s not like all the regular gangsta shit. What do you call your shit?’ So that’s why when you listen to our song, “Call It What U Want,” which came out before “Indo Smoke,” came out before “The Chronic,” or any of that, on the song, 2Pac, says, “I’m bumpin,’ G-Funk, but you can call it what you want.’ So that was the first time you heard that term on a record.”
Then Warren came out and said, “Our music is G-funk.” He was influenced by cats who were OG’s he saw doing it, and rolling with it. Warren is a part of G-Funk, and part of its emerging, but he didn’t invent it. He’s from our camp, from our hood, so is Snoop Dogg, they’re all descendants of our camp. I was the first to take Snoop and Warren under my wing.” He adds, “They were originally going to come out through Ruthless/Lawhouse, until Dre split and broke camp, and people left with Dre to go to Death Row. I don’t really trip off who did what really, because G-Funk was just one influence in the music,” he says. “I use blues, rock and a lot of other different things, as well in music.”
The album’s “Born Hustla” is about someone whose mindset is born out of necessity. Hutch expounds, “It’s about brothers who have no way out, and hustlin’ is all they can do, they’re trapped, it’s all they know. They don’t have a bachelor’s degree in sociology, they’re not great a football player, as not everybody can’t do that, and so they get caught up.”
Hutch is in his element, as he describes the song “Ghetto Platinum.” “Ghetto Platinum” is like saying you’re so dope and so underground, that everybody knows what’s up on that scene. You are ghetto gold, ghetto platinum. There are only a few people who are respected that level, on a ghetto level, that can give you certified ghetto shit. A lot of motherf#@%#@s talk ghetto shit, but they give you pop music instead. We bring certified ghetto platinum. No matter how many records we sell, we are still certified ghetto platinum.”
187’s vocal delivery was one of the first to come with a straight, melodic flow. “I always knew melody will outlive the words you are hearing. You may not remember the words to the song, but you always know the melody. I am a musician first, and then, I’m a rapper, with the vocals. I always wanted to put melody into it, because melody is timeless,” he says.
With Live From The Ghetto, says Hutch, “I want to put melody back into gangsta rap, and put that back into the fold. I wanted to sing the melodies myself, rather than hire someone else, and just be a rapper. I wanted to be a full-fledged artist, a true musician, and show that side of me. This album enabled me to give you all my soul, and that’s the way I look at it.”
