July 2004

news LRC Overview - July 31, 2004 By : SGV

Got damn! The Latin Rap Conference was a major success. A lot was accomplished. The panels were very imformative, the performances were off the hook and the whole atmosphere was perfect. The peace was kept, everyone networked and got along well with one another. That goes to show, you CAN have a bunch of Latinos in one place and still keep it postive. The stereo-types are flying out the window. Some of the panelists were Sick Jacken, David Rolas, Guic, Rags(98.9 FM), Mr. Lil-One, E-One(Universal), Ceaze(98.9), Cesar(Univsion), Sal Rojas(BrownPride.com), Mellow Man Ace, Fidel(Divine Forces Radio), Bimbo, Don Dinero, Felipe(Los Nativos) and many more. So much knowledge was dropped, it was insane.

Also in the house was Don Cisco, Queenie, Kemo The Blaxican & The Dead Silance Fam, Toy(Control Machete), Tha Mexikans, The Beatnuts, JayTee, Knightowl, Slush The Villain, Young Sicc, Oscar from Riverbottom Ent., LoLife, Kiki Romero, Reazn Being & Contraband Fam, Sucio(Pone mas jamon meng!), Terrence & A.C. Mack from Urban Latino Hip Hop Show(My roomates, what's poppin'!), Blunts LLA, Brown and Proud Radio, Tomas & 805 Underworld, Fuerte Group, Mezcal, Romero The New Mexico Lobo, Johnny Boy, Ozzie, Brian, Ruen Clothing, Malverde and tons more. Everyone else that was in the house, I didn't leave you out on purpose, my bad if you're name is not on the list. Thanks for coming out and making a difference in this Latin Hip Hop game!!

All in all, from the Conferences to the Clubs, everything went well. The second time around, we can only expect bigger and better things. Let's keep it crackin'!!! Stay in touch with everyone you came in contact with. Look for Pictures and artist and label updates coming VERY soon. Last but not least, I want to send a shout to the big homies Shysti and Rags for making this event possible. You got my support One Hundred.

news Re: Mellow's Comments - July 31, 2004 By : SGV

Our associates at WCRydaz.com posted an update on Mellow Man Ace's contraversial comments during his time on one of the panels at the Latin Rap Conference. I was on the same panel and it could've been interpreted different ways. Mellow Man is a black Latino, so by no means was he inciting any, as he put it, "Race wars." The way I took it, he's saying, as opposed to running out and supporting the Snoop Dogg's, the Jay-Z's etc., support Latin Hip Hop first. He was, by no means, saying do not support Black Hip Hop. There was a heated a debate after is comments. I'd just like to put that out there, before any rumors begin to stir up.

news FBI Indict Big Hutch On Federal Charges - July 27, 2004 By : Yash

F.B.I. Indicts Rapper Big Hutch of Above The Law For Conspiracy To Traffic A Controlled Substance, Rapper Says Music Business Is Special Target For Feds.

(Los Angeles, CA)---Federal authorities have indicted Big Hutch (AKA Gregory “Hutch” Hutchinson) for conspiracy to traffic one thousand pounds of marijuana in a case pursued by agents the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Hutchinson will begin serving his sentence on July 28. Hutchinson says, “I was driving, and federal marshals pulled me over, and picked me up. They told me I had been indicted for drug trafficking.” Hutch, who is a member of the rap group Above The Law, recently released his second solo album, Live From The Ghetto. He first came into prominence when his group was signed by the late Eazy-E to his Ruthless Records label.

Hutchinson explained, “Some other guys had been arrested, who I hadn’t had any contact with for a while. They gave the feds my name, and said I financed their drug operation, which isn’t even true. When the feds interviewed me, they didn’t ask me who I knew who was involved in drugs. Rather, they asked me who in the music industry was involved in drugs. They were just interested in people who worked in music business. So I kind of wonder if that’s why these other guys used my name, since that is what the feds want to hear.”

“Since hearsay is admissible in federal trials, unlike in other court criminal proceedings, I knew it would be impossible to fight this, so my attorney advised me to cop a plea,” said Hutch. He added, “There was never any trial. A motion was simply filed to determine what my sentence would be.”

He further contended, “One of the other peoples’ phones who was tapped was someone who was working at my company. So I became a victim through that. The feds should have known from the conversations I had nothing to do with it. There was no reason for me to be put under scrutiny.”

Hutch commented, “It was ridiculous. They were trying to claim that I financed their drug operation, and that I was the beneficiary because I have a record label. No one could prove it, but because of the association with these guys, they charged me with conspiracy. I never put any money up for their activities. However, the federal process allows hearsay, and there was hearsay that I knew what these guys were doing. So that alone, according to the feds, makes you part of the operation, even if you have utterly no function whatsoever in it. You essentially become a criminal, solely based on the fact that you have knowledge of an illegal activity being committed. I ended up getting charged for several years for a crime I had nothing to do with.”

Hutch also said, “Hearsay that is based on the claims of government witnesses who are trying to get sentenced less time on their case, and who therefore give people up like this, is all the feds have to have. Then the feds can make a conviction, solely based on that.”

A music video for Hutch’s single “Lyrical Murder” has just been released through West World/Activate Entertainment.

We did a video interview with Big Hutch recently. Lookout for that Exclusive video interview in the coming days

news New Guerilla Black Mixtape - July 26, 2004 By : SGV

Compton native Guerilla Black has released his new mixtape, Hearts Of Fire Vol. 1. Features a few interviews by Power 106's Felli Fel. He explains his feelings on his similarities to Biggie. Black then spits over a melody of Biggie beats, as well as "Got It Twisted," "I Shot Ya," "Dip It Low," "Str8 Ballin'," "The Champ Is Here," "Tipsy" and much more. If you want to peep it, head to WCRydaz.com, they got a preview for ya'll.

After hearing this mixtape and his previous tape, I can honestly say I really can careless if he's so similar to B.I.G. He's got a lot of talent and I believe he has what it takes to really blow up, without a Dre affiliation. We can only hope. Make sure you support Guerilla City when it drops in September on Virgin Records.

news New Magazine in LA - July 22, 2004 By : SGV

The folks of Nomadic Sound Systems, which is the home of L.A. Undergound artists: Slowrider, Re.4m, Acid Reign, JRoz and more, sent me this heads up.

The Pink and The Almighty, first issue hits the streets in August.

Pink & The Almighty is a magazine focusing primarily on the underground. Underground culture influences the mainstream of which we are always one step ahead. It is the all-preview source for the Los Angeles alternative lifestyle: music, art, movies, sports, fashion, clubs, nightlife and anything else relevant. We’re creating an informative and entertaining magazine that provides a thorough listing of events, spotlighting “hot” bands, art openings, movies, theater, action sports, and misc. oddball happenings. Our Magazine also provides a forum for various mediums of expression including profiles, compelling fiction, political essays, and the like. The magazine is actually a two-parter, making it two physical magazines in one.

Clubs and promoters
- The Almighty is the ultimate listing for events in greater Los Angeles.
- Your ad will make your event stand out in a sea of line listings of hundreds of other that same night.
- Ads are cheep and can be bought in any size to suit your event.

Record companies
- Because first and foremost, Pink & The Almighty is a music magazine.
- We will be featuring your bands, reviewing your records, and listing their shows.
- We will have the eyes of a very large market of record consumers.

Retail Shops
- Are you seeing fewer and fewer new faces walk in to your store? That’s because no one knows where you are or what you do. We can change that for you with an ad in Pink & The Almighty.
- Great way to publicize sales, in stores and other events!
- Do I have to spell it out? Our readers have money and they need to know about your shop and what you do.

Restaurants/Coffee Shops
- Do you have a great cool restaurant that you want everyone to know about? We can get them word for you.
- The Pink features local restaurants and coffee houses. Don’t you want your ad right next to review?

Pink a full-sized 11” x 17” magazine with a clean, visually driven aesthetic with insightful, captivating feature articles written by well-informed journalists. A tasteful blend of controversial, relevant subject matter and lighthearted entertainment makes for a good read. We cover music, art, sports, politics, theater, film, fashion and LA lifestyle.

The Almighty: a comprehensive guide to all things happening in the greater LA area. Events are listed day-by-day starting on the first of the month covering concerts, art openings, theater performances, stand up comedy, independent movie showings, civic events, and everything else entertaining. We spotlight 90+ events (each month) with concise stories and sharp photos of the subjects. Shaping up at 6” x 9”, it’s the perfect size for your glove box, back pocket, or purse (or “murse”—wussy!). The Almighty is the great resource for a hot date or the cure to a dull night. It’s the definitive guidebook giving you informed, connected options on what you can experience each night.

news Chamillionaire - Mixtape Messiah - July 20, 2004 By : SGV

Houston emcee Chamillionaire is dropping a 3CD Mixtape. 3 DAMN CDS!!! Over 60 tracks. Very heated. Features a crazy amount of disses and shots at fellow H-Town native Mike Jones. This is easily one of the illest tapes that has dropped all year. You will not be dissapointed with this. Chamillion is an amazing emcee, but is very slept on. He's getting many offers from Majors and according to himself, he got over 15,000 pre-orders for this Mixtape, ALREADY. The tape features Bun B, Lil' Flip, Rasaq, Color Changin' Clique, Slim Thug, OG Ron C, and others. It also features Freestyles and original tracks, with some HILARIOUS skits. I can't stress enough, this is NOT to be slept on. This is rarely done. About 20 songs on each CD and for the most part, it's ALL quality. Not a whole bunch of filler. To top it off, it's only 15 dollars to pre-order. That means 5 bucks for each CD. Not a bad deal, AT ALL. 5 Pre-Orders will be chosen at random and those people will recieve prize packages. Click the link at the bottom of this update for more info. Wake up ya'll!!

Go here to Pre-Order

For those not familiar with Chamillion here's a track with him, Aftermath's Stat Quo and Kanye West Ooh Drama (Remix)

news Skillz - July 14, 2004 By : SGV

The Virginia emcee and Ghostwriter Skillz has released two new mixtapes. One showcasing his abilities on the mic, the other destroying the former L.A. Laker, now Miami Heat, center Shaquille O'Neal. Sometime during the NBA Finals a Shaq track surfaced and for some reason he was dissing Skillz. Rumors went around that Skillz paid Shaq to diss him as a publicity stunt, but I think those Rumors can be laid to rest. On Skillz vs. Shaq: The Finals, Skillz not only points out that the Lakers lost horribly to the Detroit Pistons, but he clowns Shaq poor Free Throw Shooting(over Jay-Z's "99 Problems"), as well as Shaq's lazy eye on another track. I don't know what Shaq was thinking, but I can bet he'll never go at Skillz crazy again.

Here's the tracklisting:

Intro
MTV News
Shaq Dissin Skillz
The Champ Is Here
Bad Boy Radio Skit
Back Down Freestyle
Free Throw Skit
99 Free Throws
Freestyle
Coaching Shaq
Dem Wallace Boys feat. Joey Gallo
Jamie Foxx vs. Shaq
Take It Back
Lean Back feat. Joey Gallo
J.R. vs. Shaq

Purchase Skillz vs. Shaq.

On his other mixtape, Got Skillz: The James Brown Collection, Skillz spits over nothing but James Brown samples. 11 tracks and only a limited amount was pressed up. This shows Skillz' true talent and it proves his creativity. It's hard enough to drop one mixtape, it's even harder to drop one with a concept. Skillz has dropped two and they both have great concepts, which are held through the entire tape.

Here's The Tracklisting:

Intro
Impeach The President
Rick James
Who's Gonna Take The Weight
The New WWF
Jus Rhymin
Why James
Bukked Naked
Do It Again
Good Look
Do The James

Purchase Got Skillz.

news The Riflemen, Boo Yaa & Many More At Show - July 12, 2004 By : Nima

Goddaaaaaaaaaamn, what a show! Last night, at the Henry Fonda Theater, a live crowd witnessed the reunion of some of both coasts most notorious artists. Mobb Deep had their anticipated show with Sly Boogy opening up, but it turned out to be much more than just a Mobb Deep show.

Mobb Deep, Kurupt, Jayo Felony, 40 Glocc, Boo Yaa TRIBE, Eastwood, Dilated Peoples, Alchemist, Bushwick Bill, Tri-Star and many more, all on one stage???? Now that's some shit!

The Riflemen is official, oh boy, it is official! After Havoc & Prodigy performed a few of their hits including Shook Ones, they called the Riflemen along with everybody else on stage, and from then on, it was a party on stage. Everywhere you looked, a big name artist was rocking off. The Mob put down a hot show, and with Jayo's new invention, which brings the left half of the crowd to yell out "FUCK THAT SIDE" to the right half, the crowd was really and into it and rowdy.

Everything remained peaceful though, it was a hot ass show, and hopefully this is just the beginning of a flourishing relationship between Mobb Deep & Riflemen. After the West Coast left the stage, Mobb Deep closed it off with some more cuts including their current smash hit "Twisted".

DUBCNN was present for you, from back at the hotel before the show, to backstage, to on stage, to back at the hotel after the show. We have tons of pics, aswell as a 1hour+ film. The movie aint on the computer yet but for now you can check out some of the pictures below:

news Young Rome - July 5, 2004 By : SGV

From Immature to IMX, Young Rome is no new comer to the game. His first solo album Food For Thought was recently relesed on TUG/Universal. He has features from B2K member Omarion on the first single "After Party," new Compton sensation Guerrilla Black, Atlanta's Drunkest and Crunkest YoungBloodz as well as ex Immature/IMX frontman Marques Houston. True to his R & B roots, a lot of the topics on this album are based around sex. So, it's not your typical Pop Rap album. It's actually a good mix of R & B and Hip Hop. Support this, it's pretty hot. I guess you could compare him to San Diego's Nick Cannon, but with little smoother style. The reason I posted this is 1, the album is rather hot and 2 L.A. Hip Hop isn't just gangsta music. Underneath the tracklist, click the link to listen to snippets.

Here's the tracklist:

01. Intro - (with Baby Paul)
02. Freaky - (with Guerilla Black)
03. I Don't Care - (with YoungBloodz)
04. After Party - (with Omarion)
05. Interlude: In My Bedroom
06. In My Bedroom - (with Rufus Blaq)
07. Crazy Girl - (with Rufus Blaq)
08. Sexapade - (with Marques Houston/Smooth)
09. 2 Step: Intro
10. 2 Step
11. Best Days
12. Clap - (with Rufus Blaq)
13. In My Car
14. What Cha Doin' Tonight - (with Marques Houston)
15. Back It Up - (bonus track)
16. Back It Up - (bonus track)

Listen to snippets and purchase.
