news Erotic D Sent To Prison - September 30, 2008 By : Chad Kiser

As many of you know, Erotic D has encountered an unfourtunate turn of events. Late last week, the producer, known for his work with Dr. Dre, D.O.C., MC Breed and Six2, was given an 18-year prison sentence for a probation violation charge.

As it presently stands, Erotic has to serve a quarter of that sentence (about 4-4˝ years) to be eligible for parole. However, Erotic informed us today that they are appealing the decision and look forward to having the decision overturned.

Erotic D recently released his solo album, The Black Bruce Willis, and still has plans to release and promote all of the projects he mentioned in the 3-part interview we conducted with him (Part 1, Part 2,, Part 3) a couple months ago.

Stay tuned to dubcnn for updates on Erotic D. If you would like to write to Erotic and show him your support you can do that by writing to:

news Balance, Chamillionaire, Mack Maine: "Goin' Down 2k8" - September 30, 2008 By : Nima

A few weeks ago we brought you a new Balance joint off his upcoming album "Unsigned Legend" called "New West", which featured Crooked I, X.O. and Juice (click here if you missed it). We've just received a new exclusive off the project, also featuring some high profile guests.

The Bay Area rapper reached out to Houston's own Chamillionaire and Young Money rapper Mack Maine to come join him on a remake of Celly Cel's all-time classic joint "It's Going Down". I hadn't listened to the song in a long time and the beat still sounds as fresh as it did on its first day.

I know views differ when it comes to remaking classic tracks, but Balance did his thing on this one, check out "Goin' Down 2k8" below:

news Sen Dog's "Diary Of A Mad Dog" In Stores Today - September 30, 2008 By : Rud

As we reported on August 1st, 2008 - Sen Dog (aka Senen Reyes), the notorious co-frontman of hip-hop legends Cypress Hill, was gearing up to release his debut solo album "Diary of a Mad Dog" on September 30, 2008. Today is that day and - for once - the album drops right on time via Suburban Noize Records.

Sen Dog's bark is louder than ever on his debut. Taking matters of money, faith and family to the music, Sen Dog sets out to unleash personal dramas in a no-holds-barred symposium that will shed insight into his life.

"Diary of A Mad Dog" is a cathartic release for the rabid emcee, but totally accessible to a ravenous audience eager for a solid Sen Dog assault. Artists set to feature on the album include Tangled Thoughts, DJ Ace, and even his Cypress Hill partner B-Real.

""I've done the whole dark, morbid thing and the whole rock n' roll crossover thing. I'm not going to have an agenda on this; I'm going to jam and record whatever is fun to me," says Sen Dog about his first ever solo offering. "With Cypress Hill I'm working with B-Real and DJ Muggs, but with my solo material it's a bit more of a challenge and more rewarding for me as a songwriter when I come up with tracks and they sound banging" he adds.

"Diary Of A Mad Dog" is in stores and available online now. To hear more from the album check out Suburban Noize Records as well as Sen Dog's MySpace page.

news Dubcnn Exclusive Termanology Interview - September 24, 2008 By : Jonathan Hay

With his album Politics As Usual dropping at the end of the month, the fire-spitting lyricist, Termanology, is undoubtedly flourishing with esteem in the realm of Hip-Hop and beyond; moving fluently through the crowd with his raw poetic expression and dropping abrasive bombs ever so swiftly…like bittersweet terms of endearment.

Moreover, when you have Premier production behind your sound, you can bank on a prosperous career -- not only from a monetary perspective, but you’re pretty much secured a stance of credibility and high-respect.

Dubcnn dropped in on Termanology for a couple minutes, as he gave us a brief rundown of his current project and graced us with a few details about his working relationship with DJ Premier…and just in case you’ve been somewhere else lately, this is the language everyone has been speaking -- a Termanology all his own.

news Audio Update: DPG, Alchemist, Pl. Asia, Damani, Murs - September 22, 2008 By : Nima

It's been a few weeks since we dropped our last Weekend Audio update - appologies for that. I've been caught up but I decided it's time to catch up a little, and even though technically the weekend is over, I'm still up so here goes a little Weekend Audio catch up update.

We've got the new single from super producer Alchemist, who's getting ready to drop his new album called "Chemical Warfare" in November. As expected from ALC, he cooked up a big song for the first single and reached out to top spitters Jadakiss and Pusha T as well as Snoop Dogg to handle the hook.

The result is a banger called "Lose Your Life", check it out below:

Alchemist - Lose Your Life (ft. Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss & Pusha T)

Next up is a joint off Sandman's upcoming solo mixtape "#1 Supplya". This will be Sandman's first project since his unfortunate split from The Re-Up Gang, due to his dissatifaction with the way the Re-Up Gang album was handled. He reached out to Tekneek to provide him with a hot beat and the West Coast came full force on this one: the three Gotti brothers, Kurupt, Roscoe and Tri-Star all jump on the track, along with Dundidit. The West Coast is gonna feel this one, check out "Make It Clear" below:

Sandman - Make It Clear (ft. Kurupt, Roscoe, Tri-Star & Dundidit)

I'm positive that everybody on dubcnn is aware of Planet Asia's latest collaboration album with DJ Muggs called "Pain Language". But knowing P.A., he usually has more than one project in the works simultaneously! A project some of you might not be aware of is "Planet F.L.O.", which finds Planet Asia teaming up with his longtime friend and Frisco artist F.L.O for a whole album, in collaboration with My M.O. productions. Raw underground Hip-Hop meets the Yay! The first single, "Dem Boyz Go", check it out below:

Planet Asia & F.L.O. - Dem Boyz Go

Let's get to some heat straight out of Inglewood, CA, one third of the Dubb Union to be exact, Damani. The self-titled Dubb Union album dropped a few weeks ago through Koch Records (make sure to pick that up if you haven't yet), but Damani is also not letting down on his solo grind. A new track has been leaked out, produced by his long time friend Warren "Baby Dubb" Campbell, called "Take Somethin' Home". The track features Fatman Scoop and is definitely something to get the party going. Check out "Take Somethin' Home" below:

Damani - Take Somethin' Home (ft. Fatman Scoop)

Next up is a track off one of the most highly anticipated albums coming out of Los Angeles this year. I'm talking about Murs' major label debut on Warner Bros, "Murs For President". The buzz is building and the fans are waiting to see what the creative L.A. rhymer is going to come up with this time around. The track we have for you is called "Time Is Now" and features none other than Big Snoop Dogg, while the soulful Latoya Williams provides the hook. Production comes courtesy of Niggarachi (Snoop Dogg & Terrace Martin):

Murs - Time Is Now (ft. Snoop Dogg & Latoya Williams)

Last but not least, we have a new joint from TJ Santana from the Young Hoggs. He's currently working on his "West Coast Succs Right Now" EP dropping through RBC Records soon, off the back of his buzz single with the same name, which we premiered on dubcnn a few months ago. This track right here is on a more positive note and samples the Beverly Hills Cop theme (yes it does). To find out what TJ cooked up, check out "Beverly Hills Cop Song (Fucc'd Me A White Girl)" below:

TJ Santana - Beverly Hills Cop Song (Fucc'd Me A White Girl)

That's it for now, we hope you enjoy!

news Inglewood's Sean Deez Drops "VVS" Mixtape [Audio] - September 22, 2008 By : Nima

Sean Deez is a name that has been featured on dubcnn now and again, but never really got a proper look. The Inglewood rapper has been grinding for a long time now, putting out mixtapes and albums since 2002, including his "Ambitions" album, which was featured in The Source magazine.

He's now linked back up with San Diego's Mitchy Slick and Wrongkind Records to release his new projects. He had first met Mitchy in '97 through West Coast pioneer Sir Jinx, who Deez credits as the producer who first influenced him to rhyme.

When asked about the Wrongkind connection, Deez stated to dubcnn that "the Wrongkind movement is about powerful music from individuals with real stories behind their names, who represent hustlers that have experienced the highs of legendary street fame and ridaz that can never let go of the pain attached to the lows of death and life sentences."

His new mixtape "VVS", which is hosted by DJ JiJi Sweet, drops tomorrow. Features include Strong Arm Steady, 211 and Damani amongst others, while production was provided by Disko and Dubb Knox amongst others. Dubcnn has two preview tracks for ya'll to check out below:

news Raje' Inks Deal With Koch Records - September 21, 2008 By : Eddie Gurrola

Dubcnn regular Raje' has inked a deal! His debut album "You're Welcome" is set for release in January 2009 on A.S.A.P./Koch Records.

Born and raised in Moreno Valley, Raje' is giving his fans what they have been waiting for. Moving from the suburbs to the streets after going through problems at home at the age of 16 is where he learned how "real" the world around him was.

"See I was a dreamer, so if I was going to sell weed, I was going to sell it all! If I was getting money from my ladies, I was tryna pimp em for real! But everybody's not built for that, and I couldn't do it. I just believe that some of us are made to accomplish way more," Raje' told Dubcnn.

With over 5 record offers from labels, including So So Def and Universal, Raje' decided that independent was the only way to go with the current climate of the industry. After moving to Los Angeles to join forces with Jazzy D, Raje' found his home with Koch Records.

"You're Welcome" will have guest appearances by Glasses Malone, Chino XL, Dirty Birdy, Goldie Loc and many more. Raje' also has a mixtape coming out before the album with DJ Ill Will, Killa P, & Mixtape Assassin.

We've got the street single from "You're Welcome" available for you to hear today. Check it out.

news Dubcnn Exclusive: The Seven Interview - September 18, 2008 By : Jonathan Hay

They say Seven is a lucky number. However, growing up on the east side of Torrance, California, life seems to falls more under the category of inauspicious; the streets ring with an unpromising fate. Dubcnn catches up with Seven for this exclusive interview, in which he talks about his past, present and the future of his upcoming release, F.A.M.E (Hellafyde/Fontana/Universal Music).

news Stan Sheppard Forms Label, Preps "Bangin" Project - September 15, 2008 By : Nima

Anybody who's familiar with DJ Quik should have heard the name Stan Sheppard before. The industry veteran teamed up with Tony Lane years ago to form the label Sheppard Lane, managed and worked closely with DJ Quik, Mausberg, Suga Free and the rest of the crew for about 6 years.

As many of you know, the relationship ended a few years back and it seemed as if Stan Sheppard had dissapeared for good. He has now reached out to us to talk about his newly formed label called Peaceful/Tonestruck Ent, with which he's hoping to give West Coast and Mid-West artists new opportunities.

His first project is entitled "Bangin'... Pain, Pride & Destruction" and will raise funds for the national anti-gang organization "Unity One". The compilation features all new original music from Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Lil Wayne, Akon, Kurupt and DJ Battlecat to name a few.

Stan Sheppard is also closely involved with Battlecat's upcoming album, as well as his mixtape "Turntable Journalism", which we announced on dubcnn a few weeks back. The mixtape will feature new music from WC, Kurupt, Crooked I, Eastwood, Bad Lucc, Mykestro, Hot Box, Nile and G-Sinatra amongst others.

Be on the look out for the interview with Stan Sheppard coming to dubcnn soon where we talk about all these projects, as well as the tribute album for the Martin Luther King Foundation, which will be released through his label. Of course, we will also speak about his six years managing DJ Quik and why he disbanded the successful Sheppard Lane Records. Stay tuned!

news "The West Coast Grind" G. Malone Preview - September 12, 2008 By : Eddie Gurrola

Glasses Malone will sit down with Young De & Eddie G for a special 2-part edition of "The West Coast Grind" starting next Wednesday. As one of the leaders of the "New West" movement, Glasses will give you a behind-the-scenes look at what it's really like to be in his shoes. He also speaks about some of the West Coast veterans in this game. Whether you like it or not, he's going to get it off his chest.

"I get a lot of grief because of the New West stuff. Everybody's like, 'Oh, G's going so hard on the OG rappers.'

But you don't see what they're doing, because they don't do it in front of you. They do it in front of us [....] You didn't hear [the WC & Ice Cube record] '80's Babies' the same way I took it. That's a direct slap in the face of me. I look at it as friendly competition. But [I tell myself,] 'These are your favorite rappers. These are the niggas you modeled your sound after.'"

Glasses will also tell you more about his new mixtape "Fuck Glasses Malone," dropping September 22nd, the digital album "Monsters Inc," dropping October 7th, and his long-awaited solo debut "The Beach Cruiser," dropping November 18th.

Check back on Wednesday for the first part of this controversial interview, only on "The West Coast Grind" - Powered by Dubcnn. Shouts out to executive producer Damizza & resident DJ, Ill Will.

news L.A. Duo People Under The Stairs Return For "Fun DMC" - September 12, 2008 By : Rud

Celebrating a decade in the game, Los Angeles’ People Under the Stairs finally return with a new album this mont - with "Fun DMC." The follow up to 2006's "Stepfather" - "Fun DMC" is their 6th album by rapper/producers Thes One and Double K and their most fully-realized album to date.

The boys have a simple goal this time around, "On our last album, Stepfather, we did a lot of thinking instead of just going in there and doing it. Now we just going back to what we were doing on the first two albums, which was basically having fun and not caring about anything," Double K reveals.

After more than 18 months of near-constant touring, the pair hit Thes’ custom-built studio in February to record "Fun DMC" and capture the spontaneous vibe of their live shows on wax. To accurately put the party back front and center, the duo went to the streets of South Central to record the sounds of weekend barbecues and parties, capturing a sound and atmosphere impossible to recreate in the studio.

"We wanted to get the ambience of the dudes playing dominoes, the meat sizzling on the grill, the planes flying by," explains Thes One. "We just said, ‘Let’s try to get what our Saturday is like onto a record. Instead of making a record about Saturday, let’s actually go out and record Saturday.’ Our overlying goal on this record is to make sure that when you listen to it, there’s a geographical context for it like, ‘That’s a L.A. record.’"

As longtime fans know - which includes the Dubcnn office personnel - when you hear a PUTS record, all the work, from the beats to the rhymes to the scratching to the artwork (Fun comes with a comic book written by the rappers themselves), is almost inevitably done strictly by the duo themselves. Instead of cashing in on hot outside producers or of-the-moment emcees, the pair has always been fiercely independent, with barbecue guests the only collaborators on the 20-track album. "Wouldn’t no one like to work with us and we don’t like working with nobody else," Double K bluntly says.

One listen to "Fun DMC" and the musical growth is obvious. Sure, this is still a hip-hop album, but the productions and arrangements recall Phil Spector and Brian Wilson as much as Pete Rock and Dr. Dre. (Hell, Thes was bumping the Pet Sounds instrumental album nonstop on tour.) Credit a lot of that to Thes’s recent work on Street Dreams, a drama out this year on which he acted as music supervisor and worked with strings, horns and other live instruments extensively for the first time.

“The album’s still sample-based, but we used live musicians to augment what was there and implement more of a song structure to make it more accessible to everyone," says Thes. "Before, we’d have these musical ideas in addition to samples and we just couldn’t do anything about it. Now, we have the understanding to sketch notes and melodies and everything available to us. It’s about looking at it more like an arrangement as opposed to just a beat."

Looking back on ten years—a lifetime—in the industry, Thes One succinctly sums up the group’s mentality; "We’ve never been the darling of any era or publication. We were never the hot boys for any given period of time. We just roll with the punches and not get hung up in an era, cause those are the people that get dated and are gone."

Today we have the albums lead single "Anotha BBQ" that can be listened to in one of our Brand New Streaming Audio players as well as downloaded for free. news Erotic D is the Black Bruce Willis - September 12, 2008 By : Chad Kiser

It’s been a long time coming, but Erotic D, the man who has produced for some the industry’s heaviest hitters like Dr. Dre, MC Breed, D.O.C. and Six2, is finally releasing his very own solo album, The Black Bruce Willis. The album is available now on CDBaby.com, and is soon to be available through Amazon.com, iTunes, Rhapsody, eEmusic, and others online retailers.

With the release of The Black Bruce Willis, the Dallas/Ft. Worth producer shows off his skills behind the boards, as well as from behind the microphone. With guest appearnaces by several E World Entertainment artists, most notably Six2, El Dog and Verse, The Black Bruce Willis is an ode to all that is dope. The entire record is produced by Erotic D, which is almost unheard of in today’s music era, as well as having all the instruments played live, another art lost to today’s easy-button beat makers.

Erotic D has blessed fans on dubcnn, and MySpace, with releasing several joints off the album over the last few months, but we encourage all of you go and support Erotic D by buying the album from one of the online retailers it's available on.

The Black Bruce Willis is only the beginning, so stay tuned to Dubcnn for more information on Erotic D and E World Entertainment.

news Paperboy Is Back With "The New News" & Hot Features - September 11, 2008 By : Rud

Grammy Award nominated rapper Paperboy a.k.a Mitchell Johnson, has seen the highs and lows of the music business during his fifteen year career.

In the wake of his platinum certified single "Ditty" reaching #10 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Paperboy’s debut album "The Nine Yards" was certified gold by the RIAA. "Ditty" went on to be nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 1994 Grammy Awards. Not bad for a 19 year-old who’s plans had been to play Major League Baseball.

In the years that followed "The Nine Yards", Paperboy released two more albums, 1996’s "City to City", and 2004’s "The Love Never Dies" - neither of these releases were able to match the success of "The Nine Yards."

Paperboy however is again poised for success, and is preparing to release his new album "The New News", which features guest appearances from platinum and gold artists E-40, Krayzie Bone of Bone Thugs-N- Harmony and Slim Thug. Paperboy also linked up with highly successful producer Paul Poli and hip-hop legend King Tee.

Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Paperboy saw a lot of the rough side of the streets, but had a happy home life. "It was cool growing up in L.A." explains Paperboy. "I wasn’t gangbanging, but I was around everything. My people were gangbanging. I had lovely parents though and a great home. My father actually passed away last year, and that has made me stronger."

Although Paperboy started writing music at 16, he and the people around him thought playing baseball was going to be the route he took in life. Music turned out to be the route he took thanks to writing music with the lead singer of The Sylvers, Foster Sylver. Sylver had a music meeting in Las Vegas and he told Paperboy that if he didn’t have what the executives were looking for, then he was going to play them his (Paperboy’s) material. Foster kept his word, and the rest is history.

Now in 2008, Paperboy is ready to make headlines again for his music. A star studded cast of guests grace his new album "The New News." Today we have the albums lead single for download "That Boy" featuring Slim Thug. The track can be listened to in one of our Brand New Streaming Audio players as well as downloaded for free. Both those options - as well as the options to embed the song on your MySpace pages or even on our forum are within the link below

news Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It - September 10, 2008 By : JustinL

In an era where any teenager with ProTools can compose an opus on his laptop, it is altogether rare to encounter a wholly live, sample-free, recording such as Raphael Saadiq's "The Way I See It" that is due for release on September 16th via Columbia Records.

Particularly one that is a fully realized oeuvre; from the opening snare shots of "Sure Hope You Mean It" through the last string strains of the piece de resistance "Sometimes," the artist takes us on a journey that is like a lush feature film, not a string of hackneyed trailers.

And his timing couldn't be better. While plenty of ink has been spilled lauding various upstart 'Queens of Retro-Soul' from across the pond, Saadiq has lovingly synthesized the essence of the various regional scenes that underpin our best music - Motown, Stax, Chi-town, Philly - and seamlessly spliced in surprising aesthetic choices (an industrial vocal filter here, a Spanish vocalist there) that clearly earmark THE WAY I SEE IT as, literally, state of the art.

First single "Love That Girl" lays it down with a club-ready update of classic Temptations-era swing - right down to the impeccable strings and Saadiq's clarion, falsetto vocals. In an album full of high points, "Never Give You Up" slays with its multi-generational line-up: the track includes Raphael's musical protégé C.J., as well as the legendary Stevie Wonder on harmonica. And the quick-paced shuffle of "Big Easy" finds Saadiq longing for a child lost in Hurricane Katrina with classic honky tonk flair replete with overlapping horn solos.

The album's inspiration was indeed global. "I was cooling out and surfing in Costa Rica and The Bahamas," recounts Saadiq, "and ran into people from all kinds of places. I noticed everybody was listening to classic soul music. When I came back home the music for this album flowed organically, naturally. Since I have my own studio, I was able to perfect it, take my time to make it right. I was able to live with it, day after day and that had a lot to do with how the album turned out."

Grammy-winning Joss Stone (with whom Raphael worked on the best-selling 2007 set INTRODUCING JOSS STONE) is a special guest on the song "Just One Kiss." Says Raphael, "The track reminds me of early '70s soul songs and getting Joss to sing on it wasn't hard because she has a profound appreciation for great classic music."

news Kx & EDI bring the "Fiyar" - September 10, 2008 By : Adon

Born in Toronto, Canada, but raised between North America and Eastern Europe, Nameless Kx represents a new era of music in our time. His experiences traveling and seeing life in may different cultures has created a sense of reality for him which is evident in his lyrics. The bling is gone, the bottles dry, Kx weaves tales of real life experiences and events that are not only relevant but necessary.

"I consider myself a creative artist. I may not be the best lyricist or in your top 40 playlist in my genre but I'm definitely sayin what the listener can relate to.

That's the most important thing for me. If I can reach the listener, connect with them and let them know that I see reality in the same way....in a way that they would express if they could say themselves, then I did my job."

Though unseen, Kx has been able to enter the hip-hop arena in a major way. Currently working with Dj Rated R, Dj Diggz and Dj Flatline, you will find Kx on the mixtape circuit worldwide. His tracks have already begun spinning in Europe, Australia and in The US.

"I enjoy being the underdog." Explains Kx, "Where I come from, usually that's all your considered so I'm comfortable in that space but at the same time I won't back down and in my conviction to win."

When asked why he remains anonymous Kx replies, "It's necessary to wear a mask sometimes. I'm really two people, Nameless Kx is one ..he is unseen...just heard..and then there's another person who is just like the guy next to you, with the same life situations and responsibilities. Who I truly am is between me and God and that's good enough for me. You can put someone else's face in the spotlight or on the TV or in the movies just not me. I'm no movie, I'm not your poster, anything else you need to know about me is on the record. But then again the record is about the listener too so in that we all connected. Nevertheless I'm here. As far as the track 'Fiyar' goes, I'm a student of Pac & The Outlawz so this is definitely a Teacher-Student Essay, feel me."

As many of you might have heard, I'm co-writing Damizza's autobiography "Guilty By Association," along with Damizza & J. Marshall Craig.

We're hoping to get it out so everyone can read it as soon as possible. I'm still trippin' out about how crazy some of these stories are! I wish I could say more, but it's definitely gonna be worth the wait.

Anyway, Damizza got a cease & desist notice from Mariah Carey this morning in his mail box. She's trying to block us from releasing the book!

We've got the whole letter scanned up for you right here. Check it out below.

news Exclusive Egyptian Lover Interview! - September 9, 2008 By : Chad Kiser

Dubcnn was given the great opportunity to speak with the west coast legend known as Egyptian Lover. Longtime fans of west coast hip-hop will surely remember the name of the DJ who started it all. A pioneer of the L.A. music scene over 26 years ago, Egyptian Lover, along with Uncle Jamm’s Army, set the tone for what would eventually become the sound of Los Angeles during the early 80’s. In this exclusive interview with Egyptian Lover, we get his thoughts on the west coast music scene today versus when he first pioneered the movement in during the 80’s, we discuss his involvement with Uncle Jamm’s Army, and get his perspective on the DJ’s place in hip-hop today.

This is an interview for all you old-school heads to reminisce with, pop those old dance mixes in the player and pull out those old Whodini, Soul Sonic Force and One Way records. For all you new-school heads, it’s time to get your history lesson on where this west coast music came from. news New Album Reviews: Dubb Union, and The Game - September 9, 2008 By : Conan Milne

Today Dubcnn has two new reviews for you all to check out. Last Tuesday saw the debut release from Soopafly, Damani, and Bad Lucc, aka Dubb Union, hit shelves. The album has received great feedback from fans and I was similarly impressed. The set is a fine combination of vintage and modern-day West Coast Hip-Hop.

"Dubb Union" receives the Dub Quotable: "Updating distinctive West Coast funk for 2008, their sound has the potential to unify listeners clutching relentlessly to memories of yesteryear, and others in tune with Hip-Hop’s present output," and earns an honorable Dub Rating. Check out the full review by clicking below:

Dubb Union - Snoop Dogg presents Dubb Union (Review)

Our other review is a second opinion on L.A.X., the heavily discussed third album from The Game. Many of you will have read Jonathan's previous writeup on the disk. However, I welcomed the opportunity to offer my own critique of the biggest West Coast release of 2008.

L.A.X. receives the Dub Quotable: "This record is [Game's] valiant attempt to reinstate the golden era of Hip-Hop that he loves unconditionally." The full version of this redux review is linked below:

The Game - L.A.X. (Second Opinion Review)

Enjoy these two entries to our reviews archive, and, if you haven't already done so, be sure to pick up the latest releases from Dubb Union and The Game. Keep supporting quality West Coast Hip-Hop!

Rapper MC Breed is currently in critical condition in an Atlanta hospital, due to kidney failure, reports AHH. According to reports, the rapper collapsed and fell unconscious while playing basketball Friday evening (September 5) in Atlanta. He is currently on life support, due to kidney failure. news Focus.../Fokis (A Dubcnn Exclusive Interview) - September 6, 2008 By : Jonathan Hay

Focus…/Fokis your attention please! No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. This isn’t an aftermath of last night’s happy hour or a rehash of those annoying blurry-worded T-shirts from back in the day (which, by the way, only resulted in an overdose of Visine to the tear ducts).

What you’ve encountered here is the ultimate duality between potential opponents -- the Aftermath Entertainment and aFam Records producer, Focus… and New York City lyricist, Fokis.

Though they may share the same pronunciation, Focus… and Fokis are as unique to their own name as the difference in their spelling, and by merging their gifts together they have endowed upon us a diverse concoction of raw talent and refined skill, joining together in a divine matrimony of hip-hop unity.

In a friendly game of two-on-two, Chad Kiser (aka Noncentz) and Jonathan Hay tag-team the Focus…/Fokis duo to bring you this exclusive Dubcnn interview; speaking on the method behind their alliance, their anticipated collaborations and their view of today’s lyrical content, Focus… and Fokis keep the focal point on their upcoming project 20/20 Double Vision, dropping September 16th.

The only question left unanswered…who had the name first?

news B-Real Releases Statement For The Fans - September 5, 2008 By : Eddie Gurrola

B-Real of Cypress Hill has released a lengthy personal statement for the fans that will give everyone an update on what they can expect from his solo album "Smoke & Mirrors," his protege Young De, and the new Cypress Hill album. Check it out below:

"What’s poppin soldiers. I know it’s been a minute but i’ve been knockin out recordings left and right for various things. So for a brief break down, here it is: [I] finished mixing my solo album and inked a deal with Duckdown Records, which is a indie label that is hip-hop based. We’re all excited to finally get this going, as we’ve been putting in a lot of work for it.

It’s not a Cypress album, so if your expecting it to be like that, I’m sorry. But, see, that is what Cypress is for! I will get back to that. Anyway, the release date for ’Smoke-N-Mirrors’ will be in the month of January and the exact date will be posted here.

Prior to this album, we’ve released a mixtape on my boy Young De from Tangled Thoughts. [DOWNLOAD HERE] He’s up and coming, spits hot verses and writes very good songs. You will hear more from him as we are working on his album project as well. The mixtape he’s got out there now is “Audio Hustlaz Volume 1,″ presented by DJ Skee and myself. I produced some of the joints on that record, and we hope you like them or will like them if you haven’t heard them yet [....]

With Cypress, we’ve recorded 20 songs so far and we’re gonna continue to record til we feel we’ve done enough good shit to choose from. The beats Muggs gave us for this album are fucking fire. You will see this in time. I won’t get into tracks from other producers because I don’t want to jinx it. [I] never talk about it til it's done as far as that goes. But the album so far is definitely bangin'. [....]

Thanks for your support and love always, and don’t forget LA Halloween and NYC Halloween coming up. GO BUY YOU FUCKIN' TICKETS!!!!! LOL. Please spread the word! 1."

news Clinton Wayne - Lamont Sanford [Hot Dollar Diss V.2] - September 5, 2008 By : Nima

Last week we saw Barstow, CA rapper Clinton Wayne send out a diss track to Compton's Hot Dollar in reaction to comments that Hot had made in his song "I Am Detox" a few days earlier, where he shouted out a list of West Coast artists and added that "If I ain't mentioned your name, you made it hard to find it".

Hot Dollar responded with a track called "Shit Stain (No Bodys)" on which he flowed for over 8 minutes and since then the discussions on the forums have been flamed up, discussing which of the two got the advantage.

Clinton Wayne just sent us a new diss that he called "Lamont Sanford", also no less than 8 minutes, on which he raps over a selection of instrumentals and responds to Hot's "Shit Stain" track. Check it out below:

news Blog: Dr. Dre - The Aftermath of Tragedy - September 4, 2008 By : Jonathan Hay

Parents don't expect to outlive their children. Unfortunately, tragedy has literally hit home for fęted music mogul, Andre “Dr. Dre” Young. My heart goes out to the broken-hearted family of the deceased, who are excruciatingly suffering.

Right now, Dr. Dre is painfully dealing with the unfortunate loss of his son. The grieving process is unbearable and no amount of words could comfort such bereavement. As a parent, you will never have any greater pain in your life than losing your own child. Moreover, when you suffer through such a heightened emotional time of sadness and melancholy, you undoubtedly question God. I think during such severe and grueling times like these, many people become enraged and angry with God – feeling betrayed and even blasphemous toward Him. We are never really healed from such complete devastation. Forgive us Father for we know not what we do...(Click link below to read entire story)

SMC is a label keeping very busy these days. Their artists from around the country have been releasing stellar albums throughout the year. Keeping with their roots and never forgetting their hometown, SMC teamed up with another major independent label from the Bay Area, Thizz Nation. These two powerhouses are eager to introduce the Bay Area's next rising stars to the world, joined together they will release albums as Town Thizness, concentrating exclusively on artists from Oakland, California aka "The Town".

"The concept is to take buzz worthy acts or conceptual projects from Oakland, CA- make great albums, sell them cheap to introduce them and slowly but surely start building fans," explains Stretch, the CEO of Thizz Nation.

This is not unfamiliar territory for the two labels, Thizz Nation & SMC have had joint past success with 2007's Da Bidness, which featured Bay Area super group; PSD Tha Drivah, Keak Da Sneak & Messy Marv and the successful 2007 summer release, "Da Baydestrian," from breakout artist, Mistah F.A.B. news Jake One Music With Freeway, MF Doom, Brother Ali - September 1, 2008 By : Nima

Most of you should be familiar with Seattle producer Jake One by now, whether it be for his productions for 50 Cent and G-Unit, or for his underground work with the likes of Gift of Gab or Encore.

Jake is getting ready to drop his album "White Van Music" on October 7th 2008, and it's shaping up to be a crazy blend of different styles of Hip-Hop. MF Doom, Alchemist, Young Buck, M.O.P, Freeway, Bishop Lamont, Keak Da Sneak, Busta Rhymes, Prodigy, Royce Da 5'9" are just a few of the names that you can expect to hear on there.

When we interviewed Jake One back in February, this is how he described "White Van Music": "This record is definitely some super Hip-Hop shit. Lately I've been on my early 90's West Coast shit for some reason for the past year, like DJ Quik's first album, N.W.A., I got some stuff similar to that.

Everybody that's on this album, they ended up going to my sound, Buck's record doesn't sound like a typical Young BUck record, it sounds like what me and him would do. I could play the Young Buck record and the MF Doom record next to each other cause they got the same vibe! *laughs* As crazy as it sounds, they are though!
"

Two preview tracks from the album have just been leaked, the first one called "The Truth" with Freeway and Brother Ali and the second one, "Trap Door", features MF Doom. Check them out below:

Jake One - The Truth (ft. Freeway & Brother Ali)
Jake One - Trap Door (ft. MF Doom)

Enjoy the tracks and make sure to cop "White Van Music" on October 7th!
