In terms of television, jumping the shark is when something happens in a series which makes it lose all or most of its credibility or popularity. Usually this involves the death of a character, the introduction of a child or distant relative, overuse of certain plots, 'alternate universe'-episodes et cetera. Jumping the shark does not definately mean you can't like it anymore, but it does mean a series lost much of its credibility or attractivity.
I personally think that jumping the shark can be applied to many things, including artists. Therefore I ask WCC: When do you think a rapper or producer really jumped the shark?
You can give your opinion on what somebody else said but please don't make it a endless discussion over matters of taste or personal attacks.
I'll start it off with Xzibit.
I think Xzibit jumped the shark when he left his former homies behind for more influential friends and wanted to make an über-album that would top 'Restless' but made his weakest effort so far, 'Man vs Machine'.
-
I think most artists these days have been leapin over some great whites
-
That's exactly why this thread could be big. Just name an artist and when you think he or she jumped the shark.
-
Snoop with Bishop Don Juan over the homies, i know your friends dont equal record sales, but his fanbase would have remained stronger. i guess thats when he got wack to me.
I say Game from the start for leaving JT The Bigga Figga for Dre and basically reppin NY ( still a better money making move for him )
Yukmouth for his constanty dissing, all his Regime Homies are leaving him...Yuk has got to the point of sheer embarresment cuz no one from G-Unit, Master P or wateva EVER dignified Yuk with a response. Plus he went and changed Monsta Ganja to sound like Game and signed someone who sounded like 50 ( he even admitted thats what sells on AOW II )
Snoop & Game profited more from this, just not Yuk and you will see when Million Dollar Mouthpiece doesnt sell
-
original thread by the way, u get a prop

50 for going from In Da Club to Candy Shop.
Game for dissing 50 about his street credibility but getting dissed by his own brother.
Jadakiss for dissing 50 about love songs but having a single with Mariah Carey.
Plus the Cassidy and X ones are good.
-

Not really a rapper, but Suge Knight for dropping too many greatest hits/live albums bullshit and not new material.

Cube for working with non-west coast producers on his new record :-\
It'd mean he jumped the shark for the first time when he went to NY to work with Bomb Squad. ;)

Haha. Well im not a big Cube fan so I havent gotten around to hearing that record yet ;)
-
I think Crooked I jumped when he signed to Death Row.
On the contrary! I think Crooked earned more respect by leaving Death Row. Admitted, his current situation isn't good either, but the way Suge was/is handling Death Row, wasn't a good thing for Crooked I.
-
Snoop, when he signed to No Limit

Please explain me about Kurupt making the right decision.
Because I think he wasted a couple of years and dropped a trash album against the grain

Death Row made him who he is today and i'm sure when Kurupt was at Death Row when 2Pac was alive you were all for Death Row
-
West Coast rappers for uniting back in '95 - '96 then goin on to hate every inch of each other resulting it stupid and pointless beef
-
The whole G-Unit jumped the shark when they got huge success and became caricatures of themselves.
-
Aftermath record for not putting records out!!!!!!!! (except G-Unit records) :'(
-
Kurupt and Daz for dissing the shit out of eachother, their wives and so on...Then working again 3 months later.
-
I think Crooked I jumped when he signed to Death Row.
That would imply that Crooked had had success at some point. He can't really fall off if he hasn't put out anything yet. I've heard lots of hot verses from Crooked but very few actual songs.
-
knocturnal.. duno if you can group this in the critea of jumping the shark because he hasnt had too much out compared to some of the artists said in this thread.. but i definatley think he has bomb'd the fuck out.. his last album was pure garbage.
-
dre for concentrating more on 50 and g unit and not working with west coast artists(now its eve and bustas turn) Bishop lamont next please

I don't think that's really jumping the shark. He still has as much fans now as he did back then and while his music started to slow down with time only idiots think he dosen't have quality beats anymore. He still has much credability.

What kind of an argument is that?!? Its a known fact that Deathrow use to be the shit. I own almost all of the old deathrow albums.
Nowadays however they ain't shit anymore. All they do is releasing 2pac recycled material and letting hot artists like crooked I waste years of their career.
Get real

Dre was the Don back in 92 and he's the Don now. Your statment can be an arguement for selling out or alienating his fan base (which I'm not even going to discuss) but he has never lost crediability because everyone always says he's a perfectionist. He's not as good as he use to be, but who was? People are still on Dre's dick.
