Title: Albums You Didn't Like When They Dropped, But Changed Your Mind Years Later
Post by: TraceOneInfinite Flat Earther 96' on March 04, 2006, 06:45:08 AM
Erykah Badu- "Baduism"

I remember the video she had for "On And On" was a buzzclip on MTV (1997) and they used to play it over and over, it drove me crazy.  I couldn't understand what all the buzz was about Erykah Badu.  I totally didn't get it.  The song sounded so boring, I couldn't even understand why it was a single.  The song was so slow, and she sounded like she was going to fall asleep singing it; I hated her voice.  Then she came out with other singles after that, and I was even less impressed with those songs.

Now, recently I gave it another chance, and I love that album.  I understand what she is talking about in her music, and I can see the depth of her insight into relationships ("Next Lifetime"), world polotics ("Drama") and knowledge of self ("On and On").  But in 1997 it sounded totally foriegn to me.

Pretty much any of the major East Coast albums released in the mid-90s'..."Illmatic", "Ready to Die", "The Infamous", "Reasonable Doubt", etc.  Back then, I pretty much refused to listen to anything from outside of Cali, the only exceptions being Bone Thugs and the Geto Boys.  I took the East-West beef a little too seriously.

D'Angelo - Brown Sugar

loved it from the outset then went off it..

felt "common - be" from the gate.. and anything by badu

took me a while to 'get' illmatic and longer to get ready to die.. i still think reasonable doubt is trash

back when they came out i thought 36 chambers wwas the shit.. and now i dont like it apart form 1 or 2 tracks.

Same shit over here. Never listened to Biggie before 2000/2001. Than I heard "Juicy (Dj Premier remix)" and decided that I was stupid and just should check out more of his music. And guess what. I LOVE IT. Same goes for Mobb Deep.

Damn surprised to see Brown Sugar and Baduizm on these lists. Those are 2 of my all time favorites.
For me it was Ready To Die. I used to hate Biggie when he first came out, then my boy got a copy of it around 1999 and Its been one of my favorites ever since.
Another one which might surprise yall is E-40 - In a Major Way. I dont have any idea at all whatsoever how I could have heard this when it came out and not like it. I think 40 might have just been too ahead of his time for me back then. I now consider him to be the best rapper alive. Funny how shit changes.
Twista - Adrenaline Rush. I always liked his rappin, I just didnt like the songs on that album as a whole, but my boys was always slappin it, and when I hear it now it reminds me of those days and puts me in a good mood.
DJ Quik - Safe & Sound. What can I say, I just didnt know how to listen to music back then. definitely a classic.
Suga Free - Street Gospel. My guess is I just brushed him off as an E-40 sound alike. Then I listened a couple years after it came out and the game he was givin up and his style of rappin was like no other. He is also now one of my favorites.
Black Moon - Diggin In Dah Vaults. How many times can I say I just didnt know how to listen to music?

DMX- ...And Then There Was X. When I picked this up in '99 I liked like 4 songs and left it in my CD case for years untouched. Around 2002 I took another listen and now its my second favorite DMX album next to It's Dark and Hell is Hot.

Also,

Nas- Illmatic
Jay-Z- Reasonable Doubt (don't like Jay but can't deny how good this album is)
Snoop- Tha Last Meal

A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
I bought Low End Theory on tape on the strength of their videos. I didn't really get into the album until years later. I sold the tape to a friend for $5 my senior year in high school. What was I thinking?

Kurupt - Streetz is a Mutha
I didn't like it when I first heard it and didn't listen to it for 2 months, then I started listening to it again and I couldn't put it down for 2 years straight and it's one of my all-time favorites.

DJ Quik - Rhythmalism
I didn't really get the album when I first heard it, it was so different from what I was used to hearing. I honestly didn't get into the cd until after Balance and Options dropped and I picked up Rhythmalism again and began listening to it. Now it's one of my favorite albums.

The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Same thing with Rhythmalism. I think I ordered both albums from amazon at the same time if I remember. I was expecting something like Illadelph Halfife and I didn't get into it right away, save 4 for songs. After a while I got into it more and the avant garde sound became more appealing.

Dr. Dre - The Chronic
I didn't get into it right away, other than the hit songs from the album, it wasn't all that appealing to me when I first heard it. I heard this album at the same time Redman's debut dropped and I liked Redman's album a lot more. I went back a few years later and listened to it again adn I was like damn, what was I thinking. I used to have the Dre Day maxi single cassette and it had Puffin Blunts and Drinking Tanqueray on the b-side and I bumped the hell out of that song and freestyled over the instrumental for months on end.

Nas - It Was Written
I didn't just dislike this album when I first heard it. I downright hated it. I hated the drug dealing and mafioso references. I hated the Trackmasters production and I thought Nas was a huge sellout with this album when I first heard it. I let a friend borrow the tape and it was destroyed and I didn't even care. Probably around 2000 or so, I picked up a used copy on cd and all I could think to myself was why did I hate this album so much? Yeah the drug dealing mafioso escobar references get to be too much but Nas kicks some deep shit on If I ruled the World, Black Girl Lost and I Gave You Power and the production was solid. How could I hate a song like The Message? That's a masterpiece.

2pac - 2pacalypse Now
Songs like Soulja's Story and Violent were a little too much for me to handle when I first heard it. I had never heard anything that intense and I didn't know what to make of it. It took a while before I could really appreciate it.

Also, I hated Suga Free when I first heard him but now I'm a big fan.
