Im referring to the UN Organisation itself.
I think it isn't perfect because it doesn't have enough power and independence.
I think it would be good if it could just do shit militarily without having to attain a Security Council vote, then it would not have to pussy-foot around certain nations with faggot agendas. The UN actually has huge global legislative power, laws in your country generally have to fit within the parameters of UN Treaties on various shit. Im all for the tightening of UN power over your countries necks and if I had my way the General Secretary would basically be King of the World and all your heads of state would be like his lords. Ramble with me my anonymous homies and if you don't approve of the UN as an independent body (i.e. CWalker) spit why.
I was watching a doco about the ANZACs and some soldiers had UN medals for peacekeeping and some of the other vets were giving them shit saying their UN medals are plastic!

Isn't there a danger that the UN could become too powerful though? as that is the real danger with european union a superstate which has robbed european countries of genuine sovereignty.

well for all the complaints of the UN the fact is we need the UN and there is no other alternative. we cant have the world policed by one or two countries. so the un is a necessity
personally i think the islamic world should have a seat on the security council, dont know how that'll get pulled off tho

the UN has power over your countries because of treaties and conventions, these treaties are adopted at your country's choice and once they do they extend over your country federally, as UN stuff mostly deals with the goodness like universal rights for children, heritage/environment protection, amnesty for refugees, etc I don't see how this extension of power over your country's sovereignty is a bad thing. your own governments decide whether to initially adopt the treaties and usually thats because your rules say the same shit anyway. And at the end of the day your government still spends its money on what it wants, it just has to send a token of funds to Kofi. The stuff that these UN dudes do is admirable, defending African villages from cannibals, givin medical aid, working through the shit of the world, etc,etc

The U.N. is totally useless. The Red Cross gets more done for third world countries every year than the U.N. Does. That's sad.
They told Saddam to "stop it!" "I'm going to count to three!" for 10 years while Saddam just basically punked their ass. Then, the U.S.A. punked their ass too by going against their will to invade Iraq. Nobody anywhere gives the U.N. any creedence or basically gives a fuck what they do. The U.N. doesn't have power over people on good terms with them (u.s.), and doesn't have power over people on bad terms with them (Iraq).... what the fuck good are they? They're a joke.

They told Saddam to "stop it!" "I'm going to count to three!" for 10 years while Saddam just basically punked their ass. Then, the U.S.A. punked their ass too by going against their will to invade Iraq. Nobody anywhere gives the U.N. any creedence or basically gives a fuck what they do. The U.N. doesn't have power over people on good terms with them (u.s.), and doesn't have power over people on bad terms with them (Iraq).... what the fuck good are they? They're a joke.

You talk about the goodness of the UN, as if they are some kind of heavenly body, this is the same organisation which imposed on Iraq the oil for food embargo a policy which is estimated to have starved some 2 million people. Please do not talk about them being some kind of utopian society when the fact is they were getting mass amounts of oil without much food exchanging hands, the realiy of it was that it was an oil companies. Furthermore it was the UN who refused to send any more troops to protect those in mortal danger in Rwanda and who utlimately withdrew the forces from there leaving those africans totally defenceless. We all know about the resulting bloodbath that occured there, the U.N is like any other organisation you can not naively believe that everything that occurs within it is good and that they should have unchecked power. Your right in what you said before it is those individual countries which decide upon how much power to give the U.N or rather it is not the countries but the ruling party which is exactly the reason why there should be a massive overhaul in the constitution. I really do not think giving an organisation carte blanche to do whatever it likes and to have more power than a nation is a good thing. To be honest I really do not know what to make of the U.N when one of its powerful nations is scumbag China. a place where no one is given human rights and all those that oppose are sent to brutal labour camps jailed and beaten tortured or killed.

It is better to have a 'scumbag' nation like China at a table talking shit with other nations than leaving them to themselves, with the world's largest army and immense economic clout you don't want to be kept in the dark as to their opinion, and in light of that it is ridiculous to not have them at the Council table. It seems like you believe every nation is capable of being a socialist democracy, China has to be authoritarian in some regards, authoritarian isn't necessarily bad, for China it is necessary, the Chinese government may be a little nuts but that is forgetting what their job entails, theres a huge fucking region to look over with the world's largest population and fastest growing market, order in China would be impossible without a hard-ass government. Just because the UN is ineffectual over some issues to call it useless is ignorant as to what the UN actually is and does. It is an organisation comprised of nations, the scope of it's effects depends on the residing nations co-operating and reaching a meaningful solution, the UN just provides the credibility and the legal authority to enforce the decisions. Therefore it is not the UN personally who were responsible for the Iraq sanctions or the Rwanda massacre but the international community who could not reach an effective solution.
