Title: jigga's sales to drop by nearly 600,000 ?
Post by: wardy on December 02, 2006, 03:08:13 PM
INCUBUS STOPS HERE: Unfortunately, after last week’s sales run-up, things have returned to normal on the retail front. Epic rockers Incubus look headed for the #1 slot on next week’s Top 50 with a debut that could go over 160k and possibly as high as 180k for Light Grenades, their sixth album. RCA’s American Idol rocker Daughtry continues to show surprising strength next, with between 155-165k, followed by Roc-A-Fella/IDJ uberrapper Jay-Z, whose Kingdom falls off from 700k+ to 150-160k in its second week. Disney’s Hannah Montana is next with 145-155k, followed by Sony Label Group’s Now 23, with 140-150k, meaning only 20-25k separates the Top 5. Apple/Capitol’s Beatles mash-up Love is up next with between 135-145k, and should continue strong through the holidays. Columbia’s Beyonce is still strong with 120-130k, while 143/Reprise’s Josh Groban is right behind at 105-115k. Star Trak/Jive/ZLG Dirty South rappers Clipse bow with 85-90k, the same total as Jive/ZLG labelmate Justin Timberlake, who rounds out the projected Top 10 for next week. (12/1p)

That'll fuel the fire toward the speculation that Jay was buying up thousand of copies.  Who knows if it's true or not, but to have that huge a drop off so soon after the release is pretty interesting.

This was something hinted at on sohh.com, basically with the smaller record shops they said albums were being given away free, so of course when the soundscans come in it's counted on the number of albums shipped. I guess it begs the question is sound scan just a sham?

is it that hard to believe a C.E.O of a major record label sold 700k first week?

No, it's not surprising at all.  But to go from 700k to 150k?  That seems pretty drastic too me.

A 75% + 2nd week drop, sorry but this may be the biggest one I've ever seen.:

1) Def Jam bought records
2) People who bought it realized it's wack and told everybody not to buy it

Yeah I think I remember hearing that.  About a month ago I said I thought he'd push 750k in the first week.  But that type of fall off for 2nd week sales seems really suspect.  If somebody pushes 700k , you'd think it MIGHT drop to 400k but even that would be a significant drop.  We're talking like an 80% drop in sales for the second week.

we'll see what happens next week then... if he drops to 80k, we could conclude it's suss....

damn you jigga with your copious funds!

hopefully thats the case. either he steps up his lyrics/flow/production on his next album or he might as well retire for good.

everybody here in NYC bought Jigga the first day it came out it was sold out pretty much everywhere that's where the 850k projections came from after first day sales but feedback was not great on it so it "only" sold 680k, not surprising the dropoff the second week when pretty much every fan has the album and word of mouth says it is not one of his best to say the least
