Title: Jay-Z Then and Now...
Post by: jeromechickenbone on January 14, 2007, 11:01:18 AM
I just wanted to make sure everybody knows how wack Jiggaman has gotten, so I threw this together:

Original Flavor featuring Jay-Z "Can I Get Open".  Jay has the third verse and absolutely DESTROYS it.  Circa 93-94

http://www.youtube.com/v/yLC7ZcSTzag

Jay-Z "Show Me What You Got".  God this shit is corny.  Nice fuckin hook jiggaman.  Circa 06-07

That Original Flavor track is dope. I have 2 Jaz albums with Jay-Z on them circa 89-91 which are great. His flow used to be just incredible. Now i can barely listen to him.

Damn, never knew that Original Flavour track had a video.Jay really MURDERS it.

And I was just thinking the same thing 15 minutes ago.Watching the Dead Presidents video on youtube, I scrolled down and saw the "Show ME What You Got" one.I was like WTF, is that really the same person? That's some "Kurupt falling off" type of shit

as for Jay-Z, I have listened to his album a fair amount it's just blah, absolutely saying nothing

I'm still probs one of the only ones on this forum who thinks this way...

Anyway, good hook up with the old school vid Jrome :D Jay DID kill it, it's the shit when i hear nigga'z spit fast and you can understand them, i was sleeping on him those years lol.

Show me what you got, i still like it, the hook appeals to me big time, the vid for me just added to it alot better, he looked better in the 90's though.

Everyones best era was probably the 90's, doggystyle still tops blue carpet treatment, peeps banging the chronic, easy e, NWA, etc. Artists/rappers were at their high point around then except for one or two who finish it now like lil' wayne.

Hova's still ite to me, he just lost a bit of the flame but he got it still just about.

To each his own man.  But yeah that was Jays thing back then - to spit as fast as possible but still articulate to where you could hear everything that he said clearly.  He was dope back then.

Lil Wayne and B.G. first showed up in a group in 1993 on the album B.G.'z- True Story. Wayne was named Baby D and B.G. was Lil Doogie. B.G. had more solo songs on the album and took over the name. When the cd was rereleased in 1999 it was labeled as a B.G. cd and the 'z was photoshopped out.

Jay-z's flow was untouchable back when reasonable doubt and vol. 1 were released...he even shined well on hard knock life...and while i think his flow has fallen off a lot...i still enjoy it...his lyrics really aren't a lot different...except now he has a few more radio joints...

but no doubt about it...i still get goosebumps listening to vol. 1....and i don't get that feeling listening to kingdom come...its a good album IMO...but it doesn't showcase jays talent...understandable though...he's a lot older now

I never said he lost it, I said he sucks now.  Kingdom Come is arguably Jay's wackest album imo.  He killed a couple joints on Black Album, especially my first song.  But even that album is highly overrated.  How many of those tracks you listed were of KC? Oh and 22 Twos>>>44 Fours

Jaz is "Jaz-o The Originator".  Jaz really founded that style of rappin.  Jay-Z was his prodige'.  Jaz-o / Jay-Z...get it?  Jaz-O was also on "Jigga What, Jigga Who" on the final verse and he absolutely smashes that shit as well.  Anyway, Jay blew up after he slowed his shit way down.  He left that old style and Jaz behind.

Jrome I respect your hip hop knowledge make no mistake about that.

But this thread is pointless in my eyes.

No-one in their right mind would argue that Jay's recent album is wack for (at least half or) the majority.

No-one in their right mind would argue that Jay's verses or chorus on SMWYG can fuck with any of his early 90's shit.

He has let himself down in a big way, he should never come back and dropped this trash.

But comparing his old early 90's flow to his current day flow seems meaningless to me.

If it was to bring his early quick-flow to the attention of people fair enough but I think most people knew he was mad dope a while ago and is horrible right now.

In all honesty tho - I think he killed it for years with his slow flow.

I see what you're saying.  I wasn't trying to bait anyone into saying that Jigga 2007>>>Jigga 1993.  What I was trying to illustrate was why I knock his new shit so much, because several people have asked me why I "hate" on Kindom Come.  To me, hating is basically disliking something with no merit.  And so I'm pleading my case of why I "hate" that album.  I think too many people believe the hype - Budweiser commercials, Pres of Def Jam, coming out of retirement, big name producers, corny gimmicky hooks, 1st week sales, etc.  All that shit distracts from the actual product, which is complete crap.

Also, which I've said before is that I own almost every one of his albums.  The fact that he merely slowed his flow down didn't discredit him - he made some dope ass joints.  Even Black Album had a couple of really sick joints (eventhough that album was grossly overhyped and didn't deliver).  But Kingdom Come is just horrible.

I greatly disagfree, everyone always thinks a time of before was more littered with good art because the good art is all you remember. I guarantee you there was as much bad music back then, you just don't remember because poor art is unmemorable. To me this mentality is the same kind of mentality that leads every generation to thinking the world will end during their lifetime: in other words, what makes now/us/you so goddamn special? Nah, there's always good and bad art.
