protectionism is basically a tool used to protect demostic industries against foreign competitiion by the use of trade barriers in the form of quotas, tarriffs and subsidies. If you your looking for examples i suggest you look into areas such as farming and textiles because they are contensious issues of the moment.

farming: the EU and US use a variety of subsidies to domestic produces and tarrifs on foreign imports to make domestic farming produce more attractive to the the consumer, this makes it harder for developing countries to sell in western markets and significantly limits the profit they make if they do. This issue has been holding up world trade talks and has been for a while, Britain is in favour eliminating agricultural trade barriers as farming isn't so much of a strategic industry anymore however we can only act as part of the EU and france fiercely opposes any reduction to protectionism in this area because french farmers are the main beniftiaries. America too is reluctant to act, they chosing to implement very limited reductions in these barriers.

The EU and US have also been making the news in relation to china, all are members of the WTO and have ratfied areements which mean china has no limit of the number of textiles it exports, however last year both the EU and the US introduced measures to limit exports from china (quotas) because chinese textiles were flooding the market at a much lower rate than what counld be made domestically. China insisted everything was in line with agreements made, the US acted more agressively than the EU they imposed quotas and increase the pressure on beijing to allow their currency be traded freely on the markets (The US claimed the china's fixed rate exchange rate meant their currency was kept artifically low  making their exports cheaper than they should be). The EU on the other hand negotiated a transition agreementto give them more time to adapt which i believ also involved some form of quotas, more recently there have also been protests made to china of the amount of chinese leather products making it onto the markets.

Protectionism can also be used in another way to force foreign producers to make things in the country they sell them in, for example import tarrifs on foreign cars made toyota setup factories in america to escape the tarrif...

hope that has given you some things to think about and do some research on.

yea you could say that protectionism is a barrier to globalisation, but we do have globalisation going on while there is also protectionism being used but these barriers are gradually being reduced.

Mercantilism would be a good thing to talk about if this is an essay or something because you can compare compare it to globalisation on the reduction of trade barriers.

All i can suggest is make sure you follow through on all your analysis really explain what the information you have presented means, what the advantages and disadvantages are, what your opionion is and why you believe that etc. because thats where the bulk of the marks usually are.

No probs on the info, I took economics for on of my A-levels and I have a general interest in economics and business issues so i follow whats going on in the news and will talk over these things with my dad at dinner time, I enjoy discussing this kind of thing and politics but its not the kind of topic i can bring up with my mates cos they think its boring, but then were always joking around so it would put a dampner on things.
