Two classic tracks, by AZ and his mentor Nas. Although AZ's track actually came out almost a year ahead of Nas track. So I would suggest that it's possible that Nas may have gotten inspiration from AZ.
These are two of my favorite singles of all time. Nas's video was definitely better, because Nas spent a whole lot more money on his, and he had a superstar guest appearance from Lauryn Hill. So I will give the edge to Nas, however, aside from that, I think these tracks are equal in quality.
They both talk about the artists ambitions for money and power, yet, what makes these tracks great, is that (like many of their tracks) they still manages to fit powerful political messages inside the tracks at the same time. These two songs are Nas and AZ at their best. Having broad appeal yet also staying true to themselves and where they came from.

They're both great records but If I ruled The World, was a classic... same for It Was Written... a true East Coast classic.
AZ's first record was SLAMMIN don't get me wrong, but it doesn't come close to the vision and direction of It Was Written

Very interesting comparison. Both were well-crafted mainstream singles from their respective albums. Also, both employed over-used samples without changing much... Not to take any thing away from the songs, but neither really pushed the envelope in terms of production.
I'd have to go with AZ. The sample on 'If I Ruled The World' was played out to me even by '96.

Love em both but as a personal favorite i would rather hear AZ's song
Cant explain gues the chorus is more melow for me
