Faisal I of Iraq

First World War

Faisal sided with Great Britain in World War I and with the help of T. E. Lawrence organised a revolt against the Ottoman Empire and this way helped ending the Caliphate. He conquered Medina after a long siege, after defeating the defense organized by the Ottoman Fakhri Pasha. Some of Faisal's critics considered fighting along side Christians as a betrayal to Islam. This motivated Iqbal to write against him. Though Faisal was a descendant of the Prophet Mohammad, Arab nationalism and independence, not religion, was his main motivation. Faisal also worked with the Allies during World War I in their conquest of Greater Syria and the capture of Damascus, where he became part of a new Arab government in 1918. He led the Arab delegation to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and, with the support of the knowledgeable and influential Gertrude Bell, argued for the establishment of independent Arab emirates for the area previously covered by the Ottoman Empire. His role in the Arab Revolt was described by T.E. Lawrence in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, although the accuracy of that book has been criticized by historians.

On January 3, 1919 Faisal and Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the World Zionist Organizatin signed the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement, in which Faisal conditionally accepted the Balfour Declaration based on the fulfillment of British wartime promises of independence to the Arabs. These were not kept. Weizmann argued that the fulfillment was kept eventually and therefore the agreement still held.

King Hussein of Jordan

Black September in Jordan:

September 1970 is known as the Black September in Arab history and sometimes is referred to as the "era of regrettable events." It was a month when Hashemite King Hussein of Jordan moved to squash an attempt by Palestinian organizations to overthrow his monarchy. The violence resulted in the killing of 7,000 to 8,000 from both sides. Armed conflict lasted until July 1971 with the expulsion of the PLO and thousands of Palestinians to Lebanon.

American and Israeli involvement

The Jordanian king telephoned US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and asked for US air support to beat back the Syrian-backed attack. Kissinger instead told the king that he would ask the Government of Israel to intervene, a proposal the desperate king reluctantly accepted. Israel Air Force planes later made low overflights over the PLA tanks as a sign of warning. Soon the PLA began to withdraw.

President Nixon sent an additional carrier task force and the USS Guam, an amphibious assault ship, to supplement the 6th fleet. The U.S. Navy positioned itself off the coast of Israel and Jordan to protect American interests and citizens. U.S. Forces remained on alert in the area throughout September and October.

The 82nd Airborne Division was put on full alert on September 15th. On September 17th some paratroopers were off the ground and on the way to Amman. The mission was aborted however, approximately 40 minutes after the first C-141 took off from Pope AFB, NC.

In addition, combat elements from the 3rd and 8th Infantry Divsions who were then stationed in Germany were staged for deployment to Jordan. In the end conventional American military involvement was limited to deployment of medical units from the two European based divisions.
