Well, fuck it - I guess we aren't waiting on any more releases before the year-end, so I figured it would be interesting to see what albums people checked for during 2007.
Here's the catch - only albums that you paid for count. It's so easy to get hold of anything and everything online free these days that I expect a lot of people don't really listento music - they download a batch of new/old albums every week and barely have time to take them in. I'm the same to be honest. So I figured the only way to know if an album really is that dope is whether you shelled out your own money for it - even if you downloaded before doing so.
Here are mine - the order isn't set in stone, but these are the five albums I enjoyed the most this year and that I can see myself listening to well into the future.
Blue Scholars - "Bayani"
By far my favourite CD this year. Soulful, funky production and intelligent rhymes = a potential classic in years to come. I can't fault this album. Highly recommended. Peep the video below for 'Joe Metro', a song about Geologic's bus ride across Seattle early one morning - such a simply premise but such a dope song.

Evidence - "The Weatherman LP"
This was a stupidly overlooked album - last I heard, it had sold something like 6,000 copies. The production, mostly from Ev and The Alchemist, is consistently brilliant. And the concept is dope - it's downbeat, dark and the perfect antithesis for years of 'sunny-sounding' West Coast releases.

Joell Ortiz - "The Brick"
'Hip-Hop' could easily be my favourite song of the year. Interscope sound like they're about to fuck up and let Joell go, but hip-hop will be the one to benefit if it means we get more music like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B6k4sbkuX8
Kanye West - "Graduation"
Musically, probably the most interesting rap record I heard in 2007. I've always been a fan of that European, Daft Punk-style dance sound, but hearing it blended with hip-hop so successfully is something I never expected. Some purists might hate it because it's more pop than hip-hop, but I think it's Kanye's finest moment yet.

CunninLynguists - "Dirty Acres"
RIP to Pimp C, but this is what I call country rap tunes. Southern hip-hop hasn't sounded this soulful and organic since "ATLiens" and the peak of the Dungeon Family's run. Such a great album.

I think I bought about 10 albums that didn't come out this year. From the albums I bought that did come out this year and paid for the actual copy this is my top 5:
BTNH - Strength & Loyalty
By far the best album of the year. I don't have to explain this, do I?
Cilvaringz - I
Great album! One year ago I would have laughed at you if you told me I'd have a Wu-Tang album in my top 5 of the year, but it happened. I don't always agree with the subject matter, but the music is top notch.
will.i.am - Songs About Girls
This man surprised me with this all-rounded album.
Sean Kingston - Sean Kingston
Nice album with a good summer vibe. There aren't any songs that I'd put on other tracks, but the songs together make a nice album.
Kanye West - Graduation
Apart from 2 tracks I like every song on the album, but I played it out quickly. The fact that I put this in my top 5 says a lot about hip hop in 2007.
-
Cool thread.
I'm not able to post mine yet
-
These are the best five albums i bought but its not greatly accurate as there are albums i tried to buy, but simply coudnt get in my part of England; so albums like Killah Priest - The Offering, Black Milk - Popular Demand and Cunninlynguists - Dirty Acres would be on there but i guess they cant be lol ;D
1. Little Brother - Getback
IMO album of the year hands down! Nothing is touching this, dope versatile beats, sick rhymes, catchy hooks and there's a SUBJECT matter!! Easily the best rap group around currently in my eyes, who else has released 3 solid 4-4.5/5 albums? Even without 9th, they proved that they might actually be better off without him, hmnn ???...
2. Jay-Z - American Gangster
Not a big Jay fan (always felt he was overratted), but this was a big comeback after Kingdom come, dope real hip-hop, everything the game needed
3. Lupe Fiasco - The Cool (already pre-ordered it)
Only been out a few days, so i may be jumping the gun with this, but lupe once again proves why hes one of the dopest around, the albums got its flaws but its consistent and has a good mix of beats, rhymes and subjects
4. Common - Finding Forever
Commons gotta be one of the most consistent rappers around, dope album after dope album, only beef i have is that half the tracks leaked before the album came out >:(
5. Kanye West - Graduation
Album was solid but IMO majorly overratted, however it was exactly wot i was expecting and its a dope album, can't forget that ;D
-
Raekwon Presents Ice Water - 'Polluted Water'
Yeah, it's a good album. Almost every track is listenable. More than half of it. It's one them albums you just go out and buy and end up playin' it over and over. Honestly to me it sounds like an album that came out of the early 00's.
Styles P - 'Super Gangsta, Extraordinary Gentleman'
Umm, the best album out 2007, imo. I think everybosy should just buy to say they did becuz it's that pretty damn good. 'Cause I'm Black' has gotta be the best track, if not, one of them, on this album. Song is a killa. Beat and lyrics.
KRS-ONE & Marley Marl - 'Hip Hop Lives' (Still gotta pick it up)
But both them singles sounded damn good. So..
-

Yep, definitely one of the year's best also. Depending on my mood, I think that could even edge out, say, Joell on my list. Good choice.

Those are interesting choice - haven't checked any of them personally. Props.
-
Kanye West - Graduation
Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Jay Z - American Gangsta
Talib Kweli - Eardrum
those are the only new albums I bought this year besides "Curtis" but I didnt like that cd very much.
-
1. Album of the year - Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory
The albuim is a masterpiece, a concept album, that won't sell much since it was made for mature listeners, which most hip hop fans are NOT.
2. WC - Guilty by Affilitaion
Best West Coast album of the year. WC really came out strong on the album.
-
Ultimate Victory
T.I. Vs. T.I.P
The Real Testament
Curtis
those are the only 4 NEW albums i bought this year.
-

i agree with both of these...i felt the WC album was almost forgotten, but it was dope as fuck!
-
only 3 2007 albums that I have bought, ranked in order
Alicia Keys - As I Am (great album)
Jay-z - American Gangster (dope album)
Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Chit (inconsistent album but had its moments)
I have heard tonloads of albums and probably agree with Chamillionare being the best hiphop wise, plan to get it and some others with my Christmas gift certificate which I am expecting ;D
-
Joell Ortiz - The Brick (Bodega Chronicles)
Grafh - Autografh
Jay-Z - American Gangster
Bone Thugs n Harmony - Strength & Loyalty
-
nice thread, in no order
Trae - Life Goes On
very nice album, Trae does more the gangsta/money thing on this album but he still got them deep songs. my personal fav. album this year.
Joe Budden - Mood Muzik 3 [street album]
my first Joe Budden listen EVER, always thought he was some bullshit party ass rapper, but this MM3 is Exactly the type of hiphop i like; deep beats, nice R&B hooks and lyrics that actually have content.
Scarface - Made
didnt really like it at first but i kept listening to it and the album is crazy. somewhat simplistic beats [Big Dogg Status/Burn] but some tracks are masterpieces [Who Do You Believe In/Boy Meets Girl/ Suicide Note]
Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory
same story as Scarface, some stupid songs [come back to the streets etc.] but most of the album featured superb production and hooks
gotta wait for the other two
-
1. UGK - Underground Kingz
2. Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory
3. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - Strength & Loyalty
4. Sean Price - Jesus Price Supastar
5. Redman - Red Gone Wild: Thee Album
NOTE: Haven't had a chance to check out WC, Scarface, Trae, maybe a few others...
-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st8SlIhxO-E
I still don't know why everybody sleeps on it, he is as West Coast as it gets.
Other than that, out of albums that I bought:
Kanye- Graduation
Frontline- Lock & Left
Another overlooked album, no promotion, I didn't even hear about it coming out, but it really was worth a listen.
Kenna- Make Sure They See My Face
Not hip-hop, although it has a little hip-hop production vibe to it, but I can't take that out of my deck in my car.
Stephen Marley- Mind Control
Great album
Lupe's is going to be in here once I actually buy it, and it was hard to leave Common, Talib Kweli, Collie Buddz, Mistah F.A.B. and Devin the Dude off the list.. Really wasn't a bad year, there is always quality music being released somewhere.
-
1-"Cobain's Diary" of King Gordy...
It's really unbelieveble to find an album which its all songs are hit! I'm not joking. I love everysong. Production is perfect. Some beats sound like classic
Eminem songs. I think it's because of they are produced by Jeff Bass. Detroit bangin'. Check him out!
http://www.myspace.com/kingofhorrorcore (http://www.myspace.com/kingofhorrorcore)
2-"Rap Ultraviolins And Beatmaking" of Al Tarba
It's underground hip hop album produced by Al Tarba. He has special guests in album. Ill Bill, Critical Madness, Apes In English and many others. I'm very
surprised when i listened to the album. So I said who the fuck is Al Tarba? Who is Apes In English? :) It's a big succes for an amateur in France. Check
him out!
http://www.myspace.com/albatarbeats (http://www.myspace.com/albatarbeats)
3-"Horrorflick" of Bekay
It's another underground album that i advice you. It has great music based on quality samples. Also Bekay is a great rapper to me. It's real hip hop
brothers. He deserve better in this rap game. If you didn't listen this album before, you missed so much for HipHop in 2007. Check him out!
http://www.myspace.com/bekay
4-"Guilty by Affiliation" of WC
One of rarely dope albums of West Coast for 2007. WC worked with unfamous producers in this album. He explained that as " i wanted to work with
people, who are imfamous and trying to show their name to be known". It worked for WC, and he gave us a 5/5 album
5-"Fat Joints volume 1" of Sen-Dog
It is the best mixtape of 2007 for me. Some songs sounds latin, some sound west, some sounds underground. Mellowman Ace, B-Real, RPM, Aztlan are
some of the artists appear on the album. The song named "What What" performed by Reyes Bros' is a great song, maybe best of the 2007 to me!
-

1.) Wu-Tang Clan-"8 Diagrams"
2.) UGK-"Underground Kingz"

I also bought great albums from Devin The Dude, WC, Common, Chamillionaire, Scarface, Tha Dogg Pound, Soopafly, and Ghostface, too, this year. Great year for hip-hop, IMO.

Thanks to everyone one posting. I'm hearing about albums I never even knew existed. The more I think about it, the more I believe 2007 was a much better year for hip-hop than many give it credit for.

-
Galactic - From The Corner To The Block < dope jazz/funk mixed with underground hip hop
Blu & Exile - Below The Heavens < amazing
Black Milk - Popular Demand < one of my favorite upcoming producers/rappers. Sounds like J Dilla with more bounce to it.
Blue Scholars - Bayani < Great new group.
Dj Muggs & Sick Jacken - Mask And The Assasin < anything Dj Muggs is involved with is way above average.
i still need to cop Wu Tang, Cunninlynguists, and Scarface
-
^
I really love that "Sagaba" song from Blue Scholars(from 2006 I think). I'm def. gonna have to peep their albums.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UvHUHvZJx7M (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UvHUHvZJx7M)
WC - Guilty by Affiliation
this album was solid really good for gangster rap sounded like 88' lyrics with modern beats. i liked it
Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Chit
theres a few tracks you need to skip to enjoy it but its still got some bangers
-
Can't participate, I didn't spend one red penny on music this year. :'(
...but I do pay for my internet service and that's how I get my music so I kinda did pay for music, does that count?
-
in no particular order:
1. WC - Guilty By Affiliation
2. 50 Cent - Curtis
3. Kanye West - Graduation

Guilty By Affiliation is the best album out this year ... !
From Nothin To Somethin was good..
Graduation was good..
Notebook Paper was bangin .. no fillers .. great!
And those were the only 4 albums I have bought that were new this year ..
Gon cop Super Gangster Extraordinary Gentleman soon ... classic shit ..
-
1a. Jay-Z - American Gangster- Jay brought it back to his roots and he does it wonderfully. Jay shows he can still make gangster tracks as well as his "grown up" sound.
1b. UGK - Underground Kingz - This just isn't because of Pimp C (RIP). This album is one of the best albums from the South of all time IMO. Bun B really gives it his best in this album and of course Pimp C holds it down with his singing and production abilities.
1c. Little Brother - Get Back - Who can forget the group who are making arguably the best music in the game right now. They have beats, lyrics, flow, and most importantly mad charisma. You can't complain about LB, even without 9th.
4. Redman - Red Gone Wild - This album brought back memories of Muddy Waters. Redman comes back with a vengeance on this one, he still has that fire in his voice and the production was pretty solid the whole album.
5. Kanye West - Graduation - I wasn't the hugest fan of this album when it first came out but after a few listens how can you not put in the top 5. Kanye still drops his musical gems along with a much improved flow.
-
Evidence - "The Weatherman LP"
This was a stupidly overlooked album - last I heard, it had sold something like 6,000 copies. The production, mostly from Ev and The Alchemist, is consistently brilliant. And the concept is dope - it's downbeat, dark and the perfect antithesis for years of 'sunny-sounding' West Coast releases.

Lupe's is definitely on there for me now, I'd probably replace Kenna off that list.
-
DJ Envy & Red Cafe - The Co-op
Bought that shit the other day. HEAT! Ya'll must buy this album just for that fuckin' 'Buck Buck' track wit Sheek & Kool G Rap. But I liked the album thruout. Shit is nice.
-
Ok, here's my list
1. UGK - Underground Kingz (I just love this album, two cd's of good shit, really no fillers)
2. Evidence - The Weatherman LP (GREAT production and nice lyrics....got it a week ago so haven't listened it so much, can maybe move up to number one)
3. Freeway - Free At Last (Man, this album surprised me positively...very nice production and Freeway does his thing too, good album)
4. Strong Arm Steady - Deep Hearted (I'm a big fan of SAS's music, so finally they dropped an album....well, this is almost like one of their mixtapes, but I like this album....was maybe a lil bit disappointed cause I had high expectations but just got it so it may move up on the list)
5. Kurupt & J Wells - Digital Smoke (J Wells is a beast!! Very nice production, some smooth west coast shit....Kurupt is aight on this too....)
So those 5 I bought....here's a list of good albums that I have listened but I didn't buy (in no order)

I haven't really listened to the album properly. I'm sure it will be in there once i've heard it all the way through. I only listened to it on the computer and not on a decent system. I know that Westcoast Voodoo and Addicted To It are a couple of great tracks
-
Gotta add Lil Wayne - The Leak
I still need to check out Pharaohe Monch - Desire. It is probably a top 5.
-
1. Kanye West - Graduation (just a perfect album with no fillers)
2. Common - Finding Forever (lyrics on the point and soulful prductions; just love the record)

1. Young Bleed - Once Upon A Time In Amedica
Anybody know this? Great album from Young Bleed, he was signed to No Limit Records in 1998 for one album. ''My Balls & My Word'', that's the gold classic from 98. After 9 years, he sounds still fresh like on a first album. Recommended!
2. Kanye West - Graduation
No doubt. Dope, short album full of feelings. Love that Kanye album, he kicked that 50's ass.
3. Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Chit
I don't like it so much first, but after more listenings, it's dope. I feel that album and production.
4. Prodigy - Return Of The Mac
Bullshit contract with G-Unit, but he didn't mentioned it at all. He shows he got power, skillz and style like in ol' days. Dope production from Alchemist, love that street album.
5. UGK - Underground Kingz
What can I say? Dope album at all, great comeback for UGK. In loving memory of Pimp C.
Mac - Lost Tapes
This is by my heart. It was recorded since No Limit days till these days. It was released in 2007 independently. I got love for that tape, feel that Mac talent.
