Britney Spears was taken to a hospital by a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance after police were called to her Studio City home in an attempt to resolve a custody dispute late Thursday night.

The ambulances were headed for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Spears was detained to evaluate what substance she was under the influence of when officers came to her Studio City home, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.
Officers were called to the home around 8 p.m. and remained there for several hours, Officer Jason Lee of the LAPD's Media Relations Section said.
While officers were on the scene they found Spears under the influence of an unknown substance, Lee said.
According to US Magazine, problems arose when Spears defied court- mandated custody hours by refusing to turn over her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Federline's bodyguard was supposed to pick the children up at 7 p.m. but Spears refused to let them go, US Magazine reported.
"Officers are trying to resolve the issue peacefully and legally by court order," Lee said.
Around 10:30 p.m. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and an ambulance arrived at the Spears' home.
Spears' children were turned over to Federline around 10:50 p.m. upon LAPD officers reviewing court documents, Lee said

LOS ANGELES - A court commissioner gave sole physical and legal custody of Britney Spears' two little boys Friday to ex-husband Kevin Federline and suspended the troubled pop star's visitation rights.
Spears was hauled away from her home to a hospital by paramedics a day before, after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.
Commissioner Scott Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14.
Federline had previously been awarded temporary custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James because Spears has defied court orders, resulting in limitations on her visitation.
"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said when he left a closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."
Federline was not in court for the hearing, Kaplan said.
The attorney had said he did not expect the ruling to be released until Monday, but it was issued shortly after the hearing concluded.
Law professor Steve Cron, who is not involved in the Spears-Federline matter, predicted that Spears will face sanctions from the court for her behavior.
"My guess is that she won't be seeing her kids for a while," said Cron, who teaches at Pepperdine University in Malibu.
Gordon has little option other than to further reduce the time Spears can legally spend with her children, Cron said, "at least for the time being until she gets some help. She's obviously a very troubled person."
The 26-year-old pop star remained hospitalized Friday.
Her latest troubles began around 8 p.m. Thursday when officers were called to her home to help resolve a dispute over her refusal to turn the children over to Federline, as dictated by their custody agreement.
It took two to three hours to resolve the conflict, said Officer Ana Aguirre.
"There was a time where she was within the residence and wasn't available to be speaking to the officers, apparently," she said. "There was no threat to the children."
"Police resolved the conflict," Aguirre said. "Both children were turned over to her ex-husband Kevin Federline for custody, and she was in fact taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."
Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance, but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.
"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.
Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.
"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.
Spears wasn't arrested in connection with the custody dispute, Aguirre said.
"There was no actual crime that was involved," the police spokeswoman said.
Spears and Federline were married in October 2004. Her life has spiraled downward since their divorce in July. She has been photographed without underwear and appeared to be drunk and out of control in public. She shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and spent a month in rehab.
She had hoped to regain her pop crown with a much-hyped performance at MTV's Video Music Awards in September, but it was universally panned by fans and critics.
Still, Spears' latest album, "Blackout," earned positive reviews when it was released in October and brought Spears her first No. 1 hit in years, "Gimme More."
However, Spears remains a paparazzi target for her bizarre antics, which include frequent stops at gas-station bathrooms and holing up in a hotel room with a paparazzo.
Her 16-year-old sister, Jamie Lynn, made headlines last month when she announced that she is pregnant.

The Sun can reveal that 26-year-old Britney has been hooked on a lethal cocktail of narcotics - including a drug designed to make RACEHORSES leaner.
When police finally coaxed her from the bathroom, she was so hysterical she had to be bound by her wrists and ankles to a stretcher.
Last night a court temporarily suspended her child visitation rights as the star was on suicide watch - kept in hospital under the Welfare and Institutions Code section 5150-5157. It lets emergency teams hold a person deemed a danger to themselves or others, even if against their will.
Earlier, it emerged that in addition to the horse drug, she binges on “recreational” substances such as crystal meth, speed and ecstasy - washed down with huge quantities of vodka.
Pals fear the combination has left the former pop princess in “meltdown” - and an aunt claimed Britney may even have tried to kill herself in the latest drama.
The trouble flared when Britney refused to hand over as promised sons SEAN PRESTON, two, and one-year-old JAYDEN JAMES to Federline’s security team.
She had only partial custody of the kids. Rapper K-Fed, 29, called his lawyers and they rang cops. More than three police units, three helicopters and an ambulance turned up at her Hollywood mansion shortly after 8pm. By then weeping Britney had locked herself in a bathroom.
The singer was eventually dragged out by terrified pal ALLI SIMMS, who is believed to have smashed the door down with a hammer.
Police spokesman Jason Lee said they spent “several hours” negotiating before Britney agreed to come out just before 11pm.

Britney then went ballistic after cops found a bruise on Jayden James and called paramedics to take him to hospital. The tot was later found to be fine and handed over to his dad. Britney was strapped to the stretcher, but was still thrashing about as she was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for urgent medical evaluation.
She was seen laughing with the paramedics and flicking the finger at photographers as she was allowed to walk inside.
A hospital source said: “They had to strap her down like a mental patient and she was going between laughing and hysterics.
“She appeared to be having a total psychotic breakdown. She just went crazy.”
Britney’s hospital visitors last night included dad Jamie. Her distraught mum Lynne sobbed to newsmen: “Just say prayers.”
The 72-hour order under which she is being held requires a patient to show signs of mental disorder or grave disability.
Britney was stripped of all her belongings and put under constant observation in the psychiatric ward’s special needs unit to prevent her harming herself.
She was also quizzed by a psychologist who asked if she has ever had suicidal feelings, and could be held under lockdown at the unit for two weeks.
There were reports it was feared she could pose a danger to her children.
But aunt Chanda McGovern, 33, dismissed the theory and said: “I’m scared this may have been a suicide attempt.
“I think Britney has gotten to the point now of not knowing what to do or where to turn next.

Britney had attended a court hearing over the children just hours before yesterday’s drama.
Mum-of-three Chanda, from Mississippi, went on: “Kevin is pushing her so hard right now.

Sources close to the Toxic star said fears had been growing over her drug habits - and she was clearly “on the edge”.
When her career stalled, her love of fast food took its toll. She began taking clenbuterol, known as clen, believing it would help her lose weight and tone her body.
Users also think effects are accelerated by a junk food diet - and Britney has been spotted feasting on takeaways.
A source said: “Clen is a drug originally created for racehorses which helps them breathe. It makes them lean and muscular and has the same effect in humans. It works much better if you eat loads of junk - so it seemed perfect for Britney.
“The drug has played a big part in her meltdown this year.

A panic call from Britney Spears' husband sparked her stand-off with cops - because he feared she would SHOOT DEAD their two sons.

"Knowing there were TWO firearms in the house, including the Beretta, he wasn't taking any chances— hence the massive police response."
In the most nightmare week yet of Britney's crazed life, we can also reveal that although NOT high on illegal drugs she:

"She was squealing out wildly, urging them not to come into her room. After a while the cops just about calmed her down and reasoned with her to let them in.
"When she opened the cupboard door she was sat cross-legged on the floor weeping uncontrollably. She was wiping her eyes and smearing make-up over her face. Her hair was all over the place and she looked pale and despondent.
"Her nose was running and she was dribbling like mad, shaking her head and shivering. She looked very flustered.
"She had one boy in each arm, partly rested on her lap, and they were crying their eyes out hysterically. They were beetroot red in the face, and their eyes seemed swollen with all the tears.
"She kept blubbing, and you could barely hear her say, ‘Don't take the boys.' Eventually a police officer, the monitor and one of the bodyguards got close enough to reach out for the children. At first Britney let go of the boys and the team levered them out of her grasp.
"But once away from them she pounced on the bodyguard's leg and tried to stop him walking away. The cops tried to gently peel Britney from him but she started lashing out pleading, ‘No! No!' She was clambering up his legs to get to Sean Preston, who began crying again. She was in a real state, sobbing then screaming at everyone.
"Then she sank her teeth into the guard's leg. It didn't really work as she got more of his jeans than his flesh. But she was acting so crazed. She got up on her feet and tried to kick the minder, who'd now passed the child on to a colleague. The paramedics then grappled with her and tried to calm her down.
"They sat her on the side of her bed but she just sank to the floor and crawled as quickly as she could across the room. As she sank her hands into the floor her nails broke off. She was screaming and yelling out for the kids.
"Then she stopped and just broke down in floods of tears again—rocking from side to side and crying like a heartbroken child. That's when the paramedics persuaded her to lie down on a stretcher.
"But she was acting so wild they tied her in and decided they had to take her in for drugs and mental health checks.
"Even though the kids had been moved away by then she was still grabbing out for them."
Within minutes news pictures of the troubled star strapped to a stretcher and being carted off to the Cedars-Sinai hospital had flashed around the world. It was widely assumed Britney was on illegal drugs when she was taken but police sources told the News of the World:
"Tests revealed she was totally clean. She wasn't high on illegal substances—she was crazy."
Los Angeles Police Department officer Ana Aguirre confirmed: "There was no actual crime involved. Police resolved the conflict. Both children were turned over to their father."
A source told us Britney's behaviour had recently become increasingly bizarre. The insider said: "About three weeks ago she started bashing her head against the wall when she's frustrated or annoyed about something.
"That's a form of self-harm. One of her team saw her doing it but never thought to intervene. She just thought it was Britney having one of her moments.
"Even when little Sean started copying her nobody did anything about it."

Doctors agreed to the early release on condition she was signed over into the care of her father Jamie, 55, a reformed alcoholic and one-time builder.
The pair have had a rocky relationship but in recent weeks have grown closer.

CRAZED BRITNEY swallowed a deadly cocktail of more than ONE HUNDRED prescription tablets in the 36 hours before her custody meltdown, the News of the World can reveal.
And the singer washed them all down with a Purple Monster— a mind-blowing home-made cocktail of vodka, American Nyquil anti-flu syrup and an energy drink like Red Bull.
A long-term friend of the star told us: "It looks like everything in her medicine cabinet went down her neck. It seems she was only saved from falling into a coma as the drugs in her system almost counteracted each other."
The cocktail included:
TWO bottles of Nyquil
TWENTY diet pills, including her favourite brand Clenbuterol.
EIGHTEEN herbal uppers specially ordered over the internet.
EIGHTEEN Piriton antihistamine tablets
TWELVE Vicodin painkillers
TEN sleeping pills
UP TO eight antacid reflux tabs
ONE bottle of stomach upset mixture Pepto Bismol
TEN Zantac tablets, an anti-hangover and indigestion drug.
SIX Ritalin, for her attention deficit disorder issues.
TWO empty bottles of painkiller Oxycontin, known as hillbilly heroin, were also found at her home.
Her pal said: "Britney is always taking something to ease her nerves or keep her weight down.
"But her instability meant she just wanted an instant cure to all her anxieties, so she just kept taking more and more drugs and drink until she felt it worked.
"She told us she made a Purple Monster to calm her nerves. She has had this weird concoction in the past, and only takes it when she is seriously disturbed."

She will bare her soul to celebrity shrink Dr Phil McGraw, a top daytime talk host, after he dashed to her hospital bedside and did a deal yesterday.
“My meeting with Britney leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention,” he said in an exclusive statement to Entertainment Tonight and The Insider.

Britney in crystal meth claims
BRITNEY SPEARS is addicted to crystal meth, it was claimed yesterday - as the singer nipped out in a revealing top.
The troubled pop princess, 26, removed her jacket in Los Angeles to show off a see-through top - and a whole lot more.
She has barely worn a bra for weeks during a public meltdown, but this outfit left even less than usual to the imagination.
Her wardrobe blunder came as a US report claimed her erratic behaviour is the sign of a “drug-addled descent into madness”.
It said a “three-day crystal meth binge” led to the stand-off with cops that saw her lose custody of her kids.
An insider told an American newspaper: “Britney was high on meth and naked all day before. She took meth during her pregnancies.”
The star spent Tuesday evening driving around before donning a pink wig to go to a drug store at 5am.
She said: “I look horrendous. You’re making fun of me and, oh, my top is going to come off.”
Britney paid £25,000 in CASH for a new Mercedes - the following day she was seen pleading with chasing paps as she took a wrong turn on her journey home.
Using her pseudo-British accent, Britney asked the waiting paparazzi for help and they obliged, escorting her home.
US site TMZ claims Britney is now receiving psychiatric help with her mental issues.
The site alleges that she has seen numerous doctors and a new psychiatrist who has come to her home every day this week and that she's on medication to treat her bipolar disease.
They also claim to know that doctors have concluded she suffers from bipolarity.
Sources have told the site slightly different stories about the effect of the medication.
A friend says when Britney takes her medicine she is like "a different person - normal and sweet."
But she takes her meds for a while and then feels as if she can live without it - so she stops taking them - and her condition quickly deteriorates.
But a professional told TMZ flatly: "The medication just isn't working.
"She's really trying. Whether it works - we'll have to see.
"She has a disease. Sometimes when you see her she's in the middle of an episode. It's like mocking someone with Down Syndrome."
IT also emerged Brummie boyfriend ADNAN GHALIB, 35, has a secret first wife.
The snapper - being divorced by present wife Azlynn Berry, 26 - wed Chelsea Weinper in 2001 while he applied for a US green card.
They filed for divorce after six months.
Lawyers say he could be kicked out of the US if he did not declare the divorce.

Britney has been in meltdown after three days without sleep and nights spent talking to TREES.
Her last outing was a 5am shopping trip to buy Red Bull and constipation pills before continuing her habit of driving aimlessly around Los Angeles all night in her new car.
At one point she stopped inexplicably in the middle of a canyon road, clambered from the Mercedes and confessed to the waiting photographers she was dizzy, afraid and wanted to go home.
She then padded into the forest making strange faces and muttering to the trees in her new mock British accent.
Her psychiatrist was told about the driving and at that point decided she must be hospitalised on the "5150 hold". Her family and manager were in agreement with the decision.
Mum Lynne and boyfriend ADNAN GHALIB followed to hospital. Dad JAMIE arrived later looking very red eyed.
It will be her second spell in 5150 this month.
US gossip website TMZ reports that when the psychiatrist told Britney she was going to hospital, she responded by saying: "Is something wrong?"
She then made some hot chocolate and waited for the ambulance to arrive.
