Hmm, sure ...many ppl prefer windows XP, like myself, but there r diffrent versions like WINDOWS XP HOME and WINDOWS XP PRO ... i use pro, and reccomend it as well..
A clean installtion is reccomemded, cuz it cleans out any problems etc the computer has...but it'll delete all your files....so if u dont have a backup system [extra drive/cd-rs etc] then jus upgrade it...
if ure a lil concerned, u mite like to look around for information on windows xp, like whats new in it etc....

Your machine sounds more than up to spec for it.
Reasons for XP : more stable (NT Core), funky buttons, cool login screen, better explorer, theres a Tour on Microsofts site : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/tours/tour.asp
Reasons against XP : still has some bugs, although these should be ironed out when the first service pack is released.

GO FOR WINDOWS XP----------MUCH MORE STABLE
Your hardware sounds more then compatible, cos thats the bastard part of it, if theres one thing in your PC that isnt compatible with XP go get the drivers, if you cant get the drivers, get the new hardware!!!!!!!!!!
