Title: Nas- Greatest East Coast Rapper of All Time!!!!
Post by: infinite59 on August 16, 2002, 09:08:01 PM
Best East Coast Album of All Time-  Illmatic

Best East Coast Rapper of All Time- Nas

..........Biggie shouldn't always be regarded as the best just because he died, put Biggies first two albums against Nas's first two and I think Nas is way better.  Big is second best though.  And everybody else is far behind those two.

And this Lost Tapes album is bangin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's off the hook and one of the best. I agree with the other about Rakim being the best though.

As did Nas

Yo, I'm the N the A to the S-I-R
And If I wasn't, I must've been Escobar

Also the 21 emcee theory line from Pete Rock and Eminem

I take seven ill drums put 'em in a line
And add seven more snares to make it combine
It'll take seven more horns before I start to rhyme
Now that twenty-one beats made up at the same time

I take seven kids from Columbine, stand 'em all in line
Add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine
a Mack-11 and it oughta solve the problem of mine
and that's a whole school of bullies shot up all at one time

You could go on forever

Nas is defo in my top 5 MC's/Rappers of all time list, but i'd personally give the crown of the Greatest Eastcoast Rapper/MC to Rakim. I mean if it wasn't for Ra Nas prolly wouldn't be the MC he is today, Ra was a HUGE influence on him and if you listen to his music you can tell, thats why Nas gets compared to Ra alot. I know alot of peeps consider Biggie to be the greatest but he's not for me, he's not even in my top 5 Eastcoast MC's/Rappers to be honest.

Up for debate, but I think Biggie was just too damn good of a storyteller. His flow destroyed all but Rakims, but, in the very end, Rakim holds the crown of All-Time N.Y. King.

Rakim's lyrics are bitten by everyone, and every rapper out today listened to Rakim as the person they respected. His flow was perfect, and his lyrics were what makes him the best. storytelling was alright, not better than Nas or Biggie, but his lyrical skillz and his flow out do theirs, plus his message goes over Big, and runs even with Nas. Biggie and Nas about even in storytelling, lyrical about even too, but Biggie's flows crush Nas more so than Nas having more meaning than Biggie, 'cause Ready to Die saves Biggies ass, but his smooth flow that make some shit lyrics dound tight has to bring him up. Chuck D has message, and storytelling, but flow is average, and lyrical is also. Though his message more than makes up for that, his not on the level of Nas or Rakim.

Nasty(Illmatic period) Nas iz prolly one of the biggest eastcoast hopes ever, But his inconsistency during his career not only stops him from being The best eastcoast cat ever but also at times threw him out of the top10 Eastcoast(during his dark ages:IWW to Nastradamus)....he's always been supreme flowise and vocally- but if he wanted to be a background vocalist he shouldn't have made solo albums, It's not enough to be a dope vocalist to be considered the best Rapper. Bottom line is Nas ain't touching BIG when it comes to storytelling, focus and structuring lyrics...even his 10 track- flawless- Illmatic was outshined By Big'z "ready to die" not only in the quantity of the quallity\classic material(since "R2D" was just as perfect and than some) but also in personallity(due to Bigz abillityz to personalize his material to the point the listener is carried into his lyrics, almost phisiclly) . Some might speculate "Life After Death" was not on par wit Big'z debut, but if a number of tracks were to be kept off the album there would be still enough material to make it a classic, Nasz 3 follow upz to Illmatic stayed  sub-par for 7 years.  my top eastcoast goes like this(due to this day):
1.Big
2.Rakim(yea he was more influential than Big no doubt, but Influence is not what Im talking about right here, Im talking bout quallity)
3.Jay-z
4.Nas.

1. Rakim

2.Nas

Sorry homies.....but the Greatest Eastcoast rapper ever was and will always be.."The Notorious B.I.G."

People tend to forget the man was only 24 when he died...
his best had yet to come you cannot deny that fact.
The Rap Game has no fucken Idea what was to come from B.I.G.
He had the rap game on lock as far as the east goes...
Biggie was the East when he was around.
Listen to your favorite rapper's music.....who's name comes outta their mouth more than shitt & Fuck....(Big & Pac)
AkA....nothin' can change that now.

Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.....lol

12. Me & My Bitch

14. Respect
15. Friend Of Mine
16. Unbelieveable
17. Suicidal Thoughts

Will Swallow "Illmatic alive.......check it out side by side.

"Illmatic"

1. The Genesis
2. N.Y. State Of Mind
3. Life's A Bitch
4. The World Is Yours
5. Halftime
6. Memory Lane (Sittin' In Da Park)
7. One Love
8. One Time 4 Your Mind
9. Represent
10. It Ain't Hard To Tell
----------------------------------------------

WHoa!!!!
Just look at that track listing on "Ready to die"... :o
Classic Banger's like "Big Poppa" & "Juicy" will always get played at the clubs until the day we die.
"Respect"
"Unbeleivable"....yo' B.I.G.'s flow cannot be fucked wit' on those tracks.
"Warning"
"Suicidal thought's"....the master of story telling cannot be faded on those track's.
Danm!!!! when I line it up this way it kinda makes "Illmatic" look like a mini lp.
--------------------------------------
Alothough Nas came as tight as anyone can come on track's like "Ny State of mind" & "One Love"
"life's a bitch"...to me is an Az track since he rip's the mic like no other on that track.
The Cd is tight as hell........But im my opinion cannot hold a candle to B.I.G.'s "Ready to die" compared side to side, and track for track.
------------------------------

I gave you the first lp...(vs) the first Lp as an example since people tend to jock the first releases.

I think the more fair comparrison would be Jigga & Nas, cause B.I.G. was a legend in his own time amongst his peer's and those who were older than him.

It's hard to belive B.I.G. made all that tight music befor his 25 birthday.

Danm!!! I Miss B.I.G.

Hates got a point, but Rakims influince can't be messed with. Biggie and Nas can be put side to side, and it's hard as hell. But Biggie never was as bad as Nastradumas, but Life After Death wasn't exactly a step up from Ready to Die, had Biggie lived, he might have had the problem Nas did with releasing a classic CD first. Also, with them two, you might have to go with freestyling, and Biggie was more accoplished. I personally like Nas better in terms of rappers, but Biggie can't be overlooked. Though I still say Rakim, who influiced everyone, when an Eastcoast rapper spits, he just trying to be like Ra. Freestyles, just straight jaw dropping punch lines. The Source couldn't just had a whole section on just Rakim's greatest lyrics ever, and that would have been enough. But as I said, Biggies flows crush everyone in the rap game, even my favorite 'Pac, so it's easy to say Big, 'cause Big had it all, plus it was very easy to listen to. But Rakim's lyricals were just to strong for my vote.

You guys seem to keep focussing on an artists' output, not just their skills... so I'd like to re-emphasise my earlier point...
While NaS and Biggie do have the skills; Rakim (with Eric B), and Chuck D (with Public Enemy) have discography's which shit all over the NaS and Biggie Collections.

Public Enemy: Four Undisputed Classics
1987  Yo! Bum Rush the Show
1988  It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
1990  Fear of a Black Planet
1991  Apocalypse 91...The Enemy Strikes Black

Eric B & Rakim: Four 4.5 Mic Plus Albums
1987  Paid in Full
1988  Follow the Leader
1990  Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em
1992  Don't Sweat the Technique

Honestly, hate me or whatever, I never thought nas was that incredible.  He's good.  period.

Rakim, Public Enemy, and especially #1 Biggie all were more talented.  I'd even say guys like Common and Jay Z and Black Thought are PROBABLY more talented, but they're too inconsistant.  Nas has a pretty good record, I think.

I gotta give it to Biggie.  Rakim is a little dated, to me, I didn't listen to him when he was huge, so maybe I don't fully comprehend how dope he was... I know he's a huge influence on everybody, and everything i've heard is dope.  However, that being said, I believe Biggie would have been *the* best rapper to ever live, above even Pac, (well, it's close, I dunno) if he would have had time to do more.  The stuff he did do is unique, I think, it's all original stuff, and some of his words are just unbelievable... Some of the lines are just crazy, hard stuff, and his flow and voice were perfect, perfect perfect.  Even his pauses were perfect... "I dun smoked with the best of 'em (pause) shot at the rest of um (pause) was about a hundred or more (pause.....) maybe less of 'um"  - Just perfect flow.  Peace~

To the ones that don't list Ra that highly, I have a feeling he's gonna go up in your estimation when "Oh My God" drops....and rightfully so.

And to say, 'what if' or 'if he was still here' about Biggie is stupid. Biggie's legacy stopped when he died, right, other rappers can't help that, they can only go on and continue their legacy's, like Nas, Jay and many others are doing. The rap game doesn't stop because Biggie & 'Pac are dead, rappers come and go, the best stick in our heads, their regarded as legends, but just because they are dead doesn't mean other rappers can't top their legacy's. 2Pac is the G.O.A.T for me personally, he has been for many many years, but for all I know someone else could come along in years to come and blow me away and change my whole opinion. Not that thats likely to happen  ;D but you still gotta keep an open mind.

ha ha Method Man shouldn't even be included in this topic.....although you could argue for Redman based on his earlier work....

Biggie- maybe would've been the greatest as his flow is the greatest of all time (well, Doggystyle Snoop is comparable)....however, people act like he did no wrong!  I mean, Life After Death is a classic, but it DID have some wack songs......and he only had a chance to drop two albums, so he never really fell off---imagine if Snoop died after DOggystyle!.....

Nas- alot of people say IWW isn't a classic, but a lot of people also say Pac's Makeveli wasn't classic either.  Nas has more great songs than any other rapper in eastcoast history, but he has a lot of wack ones too......kinda funny though how some rappers like Jay Z and Big are allowed to do commercial songs while Nas gets hated on when he does so

Kool G Rap- incredible story teller and rapid fire spitter, he has to at least be considered

other honorable mention: LL COOL J (don't sleep), Chuck D, Jay Z

However, the top 2 gotta be RAKIM & Big Daddy Kane!!!! They fathered all your favourite Mc's styles.......Rakim brought the conscious/streetwise rap, making way for Nas to do what he does.   BDK brought the incredible wordplay and flow, creating the style that Big, Jay Z, and especially a young Snoop would take to another level...

well it's not very hard to figure out why, Unless u decide to swallow blindly anything he puts out(mainlly due to his supreme vocal abillities while completely ignoring the lyrical flawz). Ive been saying it for ages, when Nas is focused-he can break unimaginable records, therefore, he has great potensial but as u follow his career u find out that the only way he can stay focused(more less focused) is either by dealing wit so called- serious isues(although not always) through his music AND\OR while trying to prove something(more likely), NAS unlike other MCz who surpass him lyriclly, simply can't stay focused in any other conditions. He often falls flat while reciting gimmickz and cliche's which seem unconected and apart of each other , as if he was simply rhyming words...in the MC sence nas is a dope lyricist- he can bring ILL lines, dope metaphores and imagery but all this is worth nothing if he can't structure it right, and to strucutre it right he needs focus, which he lacks. When he tries to do comersial tracks he usually looses the listener very fast....

S.G.V. mentioned Melli Mel, who I overllooked in this arguement, but on my offical list, have him at number 5 or so. Melli Mel did the Message and White Lines. Greatest Rapper out the early 80's, pre-Rakim. Melli Mel had a nice flow, lyricals were average, but message was just great. And my offical list of JUST EASTCOAST rappers.

1. Rakim
2. Notorious B.I.G.
3. Nas
4. KRS-One
5. Melli Mel
6. Big Daddy Kane
7. LL Cool J
8. Chuck D
9. Kool G Rap
10. Jay Z (don't like as much now, but was a fan of his earlier work)

It's hard narrowing down eastcoast rappers, 'cause the east is so deep. I was looking for places for Slick Rick, Method, Red Man, Erick Sermon, CL Smooth, the list can go on of others I had in mind. But I'm happy with my list, and I stick to it as mine. The West is easier, 2Pac, Cube, Snoop, Ren, then whoever, D.J. Quik, Xzibit, M.C. Eiht, Kurupt, Evidence of Dilated Peoples and Slim Kid 3 of Pharcyde. The list can change depending on the person, but the top 4 are always the same. 2Pac of course the GOAT, Cube has been more consident than Snoop, and Ren 4th 'cause his solo career isn't great, but still drops great rhymes. But the East has a way deeper roster.

I got it to last forever with enough eastcoast flavor to last the rest of my days with just the mention 10 above.
--------------------------------
Word to "Beat street"..."The Message" "White Lines....Sugerhill Gang...Kool Mo Dee...Doug E Fresh...G-Rap...B.D.P...ect
But my list only consists of spin's I made....This is my top 10.
Dannmm!! I could have placed any of those rapper's in any order and i wouldn't have mattered to me.

Who else own's all the shit of their fav's in their list...I got all their discography with the exception of the New "Public enemy" and the "He got game soundtrack"....lol

Peace
