Multiplatinum rapper Nelly--who recently hooked up with *NSYNC for a remix of the group's latest single, "Girlfriend"--shared with LAUNCH that he hopes this collaboration will help him crack the top five of MTV's TRL countdown.
"You know, they already had the video--been Number Two, Number One on TRL for a minute, you know? I think the highest I ever been is Five, you know what I'm sayin'? I was, like, 'Yeah, yeah, let me get above the five mark for a minute.' We kinda, like, shot my part--Justin was there. We shot my little piece and we just inserted it into the video. Basically, you know, the same director, Mark Klasfeld--same little scene, same little set-up--just you know, Nelly in the joint now so, you know, it's pretty cool."
*NSYNC's Justin Timberlake returned the favor by appearing on the song "Work It" from Nelly's upcoming sophomore set, Nellyville, which is due out June 25. Nelly shared with LAUNCH that the recording session started out a little rough.
"Something about when me and J get together, you know what I'm sayin', and we get to flowin' like that. The creativity was crazy 'cause to go into the studio, we went in there actually I had a song already planned, done, and whoopty-whooped and all I needed was somebody to do the hook and, you know, I did the 'Girlfriend' remix, so you know, I asked J would he do that, you know, and he said, 'Yeah, cool.' But when we got to the studio, something was up with the beat--we pretty much just scrapped the whole damn song, you know what I'm sayin'? So when it came to it, it was, like, 'What we gonna do?' We just sittin' in the studio looking at each other like we can't believe this."
Nelly explained that following the glitch with the original track, he and Timberlake were able to make a song from scratch in 12 hours. "We just got to rolling through beats, you know what I'm sayin'? Got to rollin' through the Pro Tools, had some beats from my man Jay E., Basement Beats, and we found a beat that we liked, man. In like 12 hours, we came up with another whole joint, you know what I'm sayin'? I sat there went in my zone, wrote verses, we just started vibing off each other, what he was feeling, you know what I'm sayin'? He spit his little thing on there, came up with the hook. We just put it together, man, and it was crazy 'cause it came together so quick and it was so hot."
