One student was killed and four others were injuredthis afternoon when a van crashed into a bus stop near South Gate Middle School.
The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. near Otis Street and Firestone Boulevard just as school was letting out, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and South Gate Police Department.
The van apparently lost control and crashed into the stop, where several students were waiting. Five students were hit, and one 14-year-old boy died, a fire inspector said. The others were taken to local hospitals, and their injured were not believed to be life-threatening.
Officials said the area is usually filled with children at that hour because it is home to the middle school and South Gate High School.
TV footage showed debris, school items and some shoes next to the bus stop where the accident occurred.
The driver is being questioned. That sucks for the kids, all they were doing was waiting for the bus to arrive
