In a move that seems all too familiar, rapper 50 Cent [click to read] has announced that he will release his fourth studio album the same day Jay Z’s Blueprint 3 is released.
According to YoRaps.com a source in the G-Unit camp has revealed that 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct [click to read] will be released on September 11, the exact same day Jay Z’s Blueprint 3 drops.
Almost two years ago, 50 Cent released his third album Curtis the exact same day as Kanye West’s Graduation [click to read]. Ironically, the albums were also released on September 11.
In an interview with Funkmaster Flex two years ago 50 Cent shared his thoughts on releasing an album the same day as Kanye.
"I hope they see and understand what's getting ready to happen," 50 Cent said. "I'm coming September 11. If Kanye comes that day, he comes that day. That'll be great. I think his people are smart, I think he's smart too ... I think they'll move. But I'm coming September 11."
50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct has been given several release dates, but has been pushed back every time. Most recently, 50 Cent released his War Angel LP and spoke to MTV about the LP.
"This material, I felt it fits the summer," 50 Cent explained to MTV. "The whole vibe. I used the War Angel title for it [because] I read a comic book through Marvel Comics. The guy who created it, he's done 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and illustrations I'm familiar with. He created this concept: War Angel. God created these angels to create war. It's necessary on some level. I took the concept. It's kinda from the perspective I grew up under.”

not going to lie, it is a decent way of getting exposure; imagine 106th & Park with 50, Game & Jay-Z on the same show together. :o

I dunno 50 sold more with Curtis than Jay with AG but AG didn't have the chart singles Curtis had. Depends who has the bigger singles tbh - Jay seems to be hoping on the Drake hype and more willing to follow the trend.

it'll sell, but has always had huge singles for his albums; In Da Club, Candyshop & I Get Money.
if he doesn't have a top selling single on this album, i don't know what to say lol.

AG didn't have the big charting single. This time Jay will have that. Plus off the hype it's another "Blueprint", dropping 09/11 just as the first one did, and "DOA" is doing real well, this will easily surpass AG in sales.

Well it doesn't have the movie promotion helping it like AG did. I think it solely depends on who has the bigger singles much like Kanye vs 50 did. Cause Kanye had big sucess with Stronger and Good Life whereas Ayo Technology was 50s only top ten hit Kanye sold more.

A real shocker indeed. 50 might have sold more in the past than Jay but right now Jay got this. He has the buzz of the "Blueprint 3" name alone, D.O.A. is a quality and controversial single, has been relatively in the shadows since AG dropped... on the other hand 50 has been over saturating the market since 06, his singles aren't bad but sound predictable and 03-ish, buzz not close to Jay's.... He needs a huge single if not Jay got this easily.

i don't like Jay all that much but he got this shit easy. nobody is checking for 50 any more and as already mentioned, Jay's single has already been out, got plenty of spins and discussion. what has 50 put out recently? a couple of low budget mixtapes where he sounds ok but the only thing resembling a single was that 'Ok, Ok, Alright, Ok' joint, which was laughably bad.

I guess at the end of the day 50 don't need any more money anyway, but doing this shit is only going to hurt sales for both guys, no matter what anyone says.

Not really. I think 50 and Kanye actually sold more because they went head to head. It creates interest. It's not like it's two TV shows playing at the same time slot. Anyone with $25 will be able to scoop up both. If anything, it will make either the fans or haters of one artist buy more CD's so they can feel like they are affecting the outcome.

Both albums should be pretty dope, I'll be downloading both. 50 is back on his shit and the album is going to be mostly Dre produced, which means we're definately going to get bangers. Jay is Jay and as long as he does his shit and doesn't get lazy BP3 should be dope.

I'm a download both. While Curtis wasn't up to par on the mixing I did enjoy the album. The snippets I hear for Before I self Destruct sound more lyrical then recent material so I'm kind of excited. I bump the past couple Jay albums so I'm looking forward to Blueprint 3.

I think people hardly want to buy an album (preffering illegal download) as it is, so if a rap fan decides he's actually going to buy the album, but finds out that two albums he wants are out on the same day, chances are he will buy one and download the other whereas if they were released a couple of days apart he might have been more likely to buy both.
As for selling more, 50's first album sold almost 900k in the first week and his second sold over a million in 4 days. By comparison, Curtis sold almost 700k in the first week. So I think it is a little stupid for 50 to be doing this.
The market sucked back then as well. The fact is while it will mean one rapper won't have a #1 album that week, it will also mean that two big rappers will be dropping albums that day so both of their fanbases will be going to record stores to buy the albums. I'd say a 50 Cent fan is more likely to buy Jay's new album if he's in the record store on the day and not at home, waiting a couple more weeks for it to come out, especially since most stores sell them at a lower price on the opening week. It creates a far better chance of the consumer buying the other album on an impulse. By going head to head, it creates a bigger interest in both albums. If you put them out on the same day, the discussion becomes about both albums instead of just one. It's like unofficial cross-promotion. Competition is always good for business.
