I'm not saying the East Coast doesn't have their albums like that, but nowhere near as many as the West put out underground... East always got more recognition and what not where as the West didn't to me

Makaveli, All Eyez On Me, Me Against The World, Doggystyle & The Chronic are arguably 5 of the 10 best albums in hip hop history.

West Coast without a doubt. Classics coming out left and right. The East had put out some classic shit too of course! But for me, I never could get into some of the East Coast albums on the same level as the West Coast ones. :-\ But nevertheless I'm satisfied with the music. 8)

you can say the same for illmatic, 36 chambers, ready to die, cuban linx, liquid swords...

besides the ones you mentioned the west had also bow down, regulate, some too $hort ones, mack 10, operation stackola, lethal injection, some e-40 ones, this is the shack, gangstas paradise, curb servin, gumbo roots, coast II coast, uncle sam's curse, black sunday, at the speed of life...
the east also had the score, dare iz a darkside, muddy waters, do or die, tical, return to the 36 chambers, 4,5,6, mecca and the soul brother, the sun rises in the east, ironman, don't sweat the technique, stakes is high, midnight marauders, the coming, dead serious, hold it down, business never personal,  livin' proof, reasonable doubt, return of the boom bap, the infamous, enta da stage, 19 naughty III, bacdafucup, all we got iz us, word...life...
these are the ones I can think of now

it's hard to say but I think the east got it

I think the west got it. From Chronic to Makaveli... the west was unstoppable. Lets not forget Black Sunday, Predator, Regulator, Above the Rim and Murder Was the Case soundtracks, and for good measure, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, At the Speed of Life and 21 & Over.

It's funny how that time frame from the west the gangsta rap gets recognition, and well derserved, but like a few other posters have stated, you had Pharcyde, the whole Heiro camp, Soul Assassins, Likwit Crew and a gang of other groups that were doing they thang around that time as well. The West is more diverse then what people give it credit for, even today.

You actually DID have alot of dope ass albums coming from the south around that period as well. Scarface, Rap-A-Lot, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Big Mike, and Master P was starting to make noise as well towards 96.

I don't know about that lol. I will go as far to say this though, the amount of classic albums from the south was not as much as the east and the west but there were a couple classic albums during that time frame from there that stand the test of time IMO.

I was thinking the same thing man. Black Sunday gets all the shine but Temples Of Boom was and still is a very underrated classic album to me from Cypress.

Word.

I voted for the East simply because I haven't heard that many West Coast albums from that era.

East coast easily for me, although both coasts obviously released loads of great music there are a lot more east coast albums that are the highest calibre.

I might be leaning towards the east coast a little, but it's really a tough call.

and one should def note that besides all the great death row albums, all 4 too short albums from that period, Pac albums, classic gangsta rap shit and all that, the west also had the tha liks, ras kass first album, pharcyde, the whole hiero camp (IMO their first solos (casual's album, souls of mischief, extra prolific (snupe), del...) had top notch albums

the west coast did..

but the south was heavily slept on in that era...

rap-a-lot dropped hit after hit after albums from 92-96...that fell on alot of deaf ears

2 of Americaz Most isn't an album from the west lol...

During that actual timeframs, I would have said the West.  But in retrospect, for me it's the East.  I mean you didn't even mention Jeru "The Sun Rises in the East", Boot Camp, Naughty By Nature, Redman, shit I could keep goin...Yeah you could throw in a little bit here and there from the West on top of what you did, but I think the East as a whole put out more consistent music.
