10 Year Anniversary: Dr. Dre - 2001 - By : Rud - November 16, 2009

Sometimes our Forum Members really show how switched on they are when they drop a discussion thread today to mark the 10th anniversay of Dr. Dre's last solo outing "2001" - you read that right today, November 16 2009, is 10 years since "2001" hit shelves worldwide.

For those of you who were online back in 1999 you will remember the incredible hype and suspense around this record. From the leaked RealMedia (rm file) tracks that were circling around to the very low quality, early MP3s the internet was buzzing, perhaps the first time the internet was truly used to support the release of a key Hip-Hop album; albeit on a small scale compared to the online scene today.

In fact it was out of the ashes of the Dre 2001 Forums of that era that The Westcoast Affiliates Forum and subsequently Dubcc was born. You could summise that without the release of Dr. Dre's "2001" and the online community that grew, Dubcnn may not have come into existence as Dubcnn was founded on the back of the group of people that came from the Dre 2001 Forums - that community is now over 20,000 strong and reside at Dubcc.

Of course the album itself has a much bigger legacy. Not only did it spawn countless hits and reunite the westcoast for the next few years - it has mapped much of the musical landscape of the past decade across all genres.

Today we stand to acknowledge an album that sounds as fresh today as it did 10 years ago when it first graced our CD Players. As a reminder we have put the whole album, for listening only, on a tribute page to mark this 10 Year Anniversary.

Dr. Dre - Chronic 2001 (Listen)

If its been some time since you last had this in rotation your about to be transported back in time, dont blame us if you come back down to earth and switch the radio on!

The entire Dubcnn staff want to thank Dr. Dre and the entire team who worked tirelessly on "2001" - now please finish up "Detox" so the next decade can be just as fresh backed by a new soundtrack.

I commented in the other thread aswell, but yea

I remember the day like it was yesterday.  Skipped school to go to the mall and was listening to it by like 1030am....

  8)

This album is most definitely a timeless masterpiece.  Ive said many times before, Dre could drop this album tomorrow and it would still sound fresh and make people go  :o  Simply Amazing.  If Detox can sound half as good as the production and features on this record, I will be impressed.

I can't believe it was actually 10 years ago. That's crazy. I remember bumping that album for the first time when I was in 8th grade.

I still love this album as much as I did when I first got it. It almost single-handedly changed the game.

And I can put 2001 above The Chronic anyday. 2001 is just a superior album sonically.

I cant say more than this...............................

Things just ain't the same for gangstas.
Times is changing, young niggas is aging.
Becoming OG's in the game and changing,
To make way for these new names and faces, but
The strangest things can happen from rappin, when
Niggas get wrapped up in image and actin,
Niggas get capped up and wrapped in plastic,
Zipped up in bags when it happens, that's it.
I've seen em come; I've watched em go,
Watched em rise, witnessed it and watched em blow.
Watched em all blossom, and suddenly watched em grow.
Watched the lawsuits when they lost the dough.
Best friends and money: I lost them both.
Went, visited niggas in the hospital.
It's all the same shit all across the globe.
I just sit back and watch the show. (The watcher)

hell yeah it's the d.r.e. !!!! once a week i bump this album in the car and i must agree that it's timeless. This shit sounds fresh!hehe

Props for this thread Rud. I actually didn't know that this album played a key role in the unification of many forums to become DUBCC. that's crazy !!

Man i can still remember when this album dropped, i was pretty young and my brother was outside the house with his friends who had gotten two 15 inch Kickers installled in the trunk of his bimmer just for this, then they copped the album and came back home and where playing it all day long until midnight...it was a crazy ass block party and i'll never forget the chills i had When i heard Still D.R.E, forgot about Dre, The Next Episode and What's the difference.

Dre, Detox baby, we need it !!!

Yup as i was writing that, it made me think how instrumental the album was in Dubcc and then Dubcnn even existing.

Ahead of its time. I remember working at Wherehouse when that came out and I got a promo copy of it. And even the leftover tracks helped Xzibit, Snoop, Eminem, etc with their solo albums as well.

Bit young to remember when it dropped although I remember people singing parts of the Next Episode at school. When I first was getting into rap I heard Still Dre in the car and it changed music forever for me.

Amazing album and brilliantly represented the West Coast. If only every album could seek to push boundaries like this one...

classic hip-hop album, period.

2001 went through some troubles too with Suge stealing the original Chronic 2000 title or even Lucasfilm suing Dr Dre for using the THX sound http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5922699/lucasfilm_taking_dr_dre_to_court

here is a throwback article (http://www.nytimes.com/1999/11/14/arts/the-street-talk-he-says-is-a-bum-rap.html) published 2 days before the album release of Dre talking to NY Times where he said the album was originally a mixtape and then it was made like a movie :

DR. DRE, who has sold more than 20 million albums as a rapper and producer, feels like an underdog again. ''For the last couple of years, there's been a lot of talk out on the streets about whether or not I can still hold my own, whether or not I'm still good at producing,'' he said. ''That was the ultimate motivation for me. Magazines, word of mouth and rap tabloids were saying I didn't have it any more. What more do I need to do? How many platinum records have I made? O.K., here's the album -- now what do you have to say?''

Dr. Dre, 34, was talking about his second solo album, ''Dr. Dre 2001,'' in the lounge of a midtown Manhattan hotel on the afternoon before his Oct. 23 appearance on ''Saturday Night Live.'' Wearing an oversized Fubu jersey and fielding handshakes from his Avirex-branded entourage as he talked, he was rousing himself after waking up late. The reason, he said, was that his wife had made him play the album five times the night before. ''She's big on it,'' he said.

On many of the album's songs, Dr. Dre raps like a hard-partying character surrounded by eager, trampy women. His wife, Nicole, whom he married in 1996, doesn't mind. ''For awhile, right when I got married, I was kind of turned off from using the type of language I was using and the type of records that I was doing,'' Dr. Dre said. ''It was, like, O.K., I'm married now, so maybe I need to tone it down. And my records stopped coming out as good as they should. So she got with me: 'What's up? I want to hear the hardcore stuff.' She was a big reason for me getting back on track.''

Hardcore means a return to the staples of gangsta rap: boasts, threats, shootouts, marijuana and sex. On ''2001,'' Dr. Dre said: ''Everything you hear is planned. It's a movie, with different varieties of situations. So you've got buildups, touching moments, aggressive moments. You've even got a 'Pause for Porno.' It's got everything that a movie needs.''

The album started out with a different approach, Dr. Dre said. It was originally going to be like a mix tape, the quasi-bootleg collections of songs that disc jockeys make, with songs connected by interludes of fancy turntable effects. But during the year and a half that Dr. Dre worked on ''2001,'' other rap albums appeared with the mix-tape format, so he moved in the opposite direction: clean, spartan production with a minimum of turntable scratching. ''I don't make my records for the clubs, the radio or nothing like that,'' he said. ''I make my records basically for people to play in their cars or just play in their houses when they're cleaning up. I believe that's where people listen to the most music: in the car.''

His albums, he said, are simply entertainment, not an advertisement for the lifestyle of the gangsters and players in his raps. ''I'm not trying to send out any messages or anything with this record,'' he said. ''I just basically do hard-core hip-hop and try to add a touch of dark comedy here and there. A lot of times the media just takes this and tries to make it into something else when it's all entertainment first. Any person that listens to these records and wants to imitate them is an idiot, unless they just want to imitate the fact that it's a good record. You should't take it too seriously. It's not like you're going to go see a play or a movie or something and want to come out to be Rambo.''

Dr. Dre is already planning his next projects. One is a possible tour with Snoop Dogg that would present a full-fledged hip-hop musical, with actors portraying the stories from the songs. ''For instance, an undercover cop gets killed on stage, and then me and Snoop would come out and do 'Deep Cover.' It could work,'' he said.

He is looking for a singer to make an album of hip-hop soul songs that he has stockpiled. He's producing Eminem's next album. He is also contemplating a revival of N.W.A. to include two other original members of the group -- Ice Cube and Ren -- plus Snoop Dogg. ''We'll have to see how the business goes on that,'' he said. The album is tentatively planned for the Christmas 2000 buying season.

''I'm a winner, man, I'm a leader,'' Dr. Dre said, an underdog no more. ''I've got to do this, I've got to keep doing it. I want to do another 10 years and set a record -- the longest person to be in this business successfully. And I want to keep shocking people like, 'Man, what is he going to next?' ''

The crazy thing for me is that this album is PERFECT to bump in the summertime and it came out in November. I remember they pushed the date back a couple times. But damn near till 2001, this album was getting steady rotation for almost a year and a half.

timeless piece of music, probably the greatest album that will ever come out of the west coast imo, still the benchmark for everything else the west has to offer, and in some ways it was a gift and a curse...if Dre hadnt set the standard so high and raised the bar the way he did with this album, maybe we'd have seen Detox released by now

How many times was Dr. Dre sued because of some of the samples on "2001"? He got sued over the intro and "Lets Get High" too.

Quote
The Fatback Band also sued Dr. Dre over alleged infringement regarding its song "Backstrokin'" in his song "Let's Get High" from the 2001 album; Dr. Dre was ordered to pay $1.5 million to the band in 2003.

It was in my senior year in high school and I was anticipating this album like crazy.  Back then a local CD shop started selling album as soon as they got them so I didn't have to wait until the Tuesday, got it the Thursday before.  Remember people bumping that in the high school cafe the next day.
Great album, was playing that CD consistently for a while.

2 tracks that I was HYPED about before listening to the album

Fuck You- The 1st song I had seen with Snoop on it. That was after the split from Death Row for both Snoop and Dre and for me the 1st time hearing them back together other than Still D.R.E. When Devin finished his verse and Snoop came right in after that= classic.

XXXPlosive- 1st Kurupt song with Dre since the split that I heard. I was like oh man Kurupt is gonna murder this track. Well we all know the rest. I remember being highly disappointed in that track for a while. That was the 1st track I played when I opened the case. It has grown on me a little bit over time. Nate killed the hook.

Next Episode as a honorable mention. That song will still get a club buck when it comes on. Quickly became one of my favorite Dre/Snoop songs.

Probably was but back then you would not hear a song until the album dropped. The 1st time I heard Zoom was the version with LL Cool J on it. Unless a DJ leaked a track on the radio or something or you bought a bootleg from somewhere. So back when this dropped, that was the 1st official song I seen with Dre and Snoop other than Still D.R.E.

I think it sold almost 8 million copies, not sure though.

EDIT: Here's what i found from Wikipedia:

Quote
The album has sold 7.23 million copies in the United States up to July 2008 and was certified six times Platinum by the RIAA on November 21, 2000.

As a matter of fact, I was listening to 2001 a couple days ago. Fresh sounding West Coast beats at the time with some G-funk influence on some songs (with that signature synthesizer) like on "Light Speed", "What's the Difference", "Some L.A. Niggaz", and "Housewife".

Some of the skits weren't necessary in my opinion, and like I've said before:
Quote
Hittman doesn't stand-out. He sounds as if Dre was walking through the streets one day and said, "Hey, you wanna rap?"
He's plain as fuck.

Amazing, classic album.  Like many have said here: It was way ahead of its time, and still sounds totally fresh today...and that is after listening to it hundreds of times...some songs probably 1000+ times.  Definitely no album has topped it since its release, and I personally don't think Dre can top it w/ Detox.

Classic album! Can't believe its 10 years old. I remember when I got it, Me and my cousins bumped this hard on CONSTANT repeat playing goldeneye on Nintendo 64, (those were the days lol).

Even some of the skits don't grow old, I'd pay for an album full of Snoop Dre, d.o.c and co clowin in the studio.

Fuck You= the funkiest beat ever, PURE porno shit.  8)

Only tracks I don't really listen to these days is Murder Ink and Whats the Difference.

It was the 2nd album I ever downloaded in mp3 from mirc using xdcc. on 56k took me over 4 hrs (the album was only imported 3 weeks later down under). I remember it took a lil while to get used to at first as it was not the typical west coast dre sound he had been using, but after a few listens i really got into it and soon after many others did down here too

Fuck You- The 1st song I had seen with Snoop on it. That was after the split from Death Row for both Snoop and Dre and for me the 1st time hearing them back together other than Still D.R.E. When Devin finished his verse and Snoop came right in after that= classic.

Was the original version of "Zoom" recorded while they was still both on Death Row?

Probably was but back then you would not hear a song until the album dropped. The 1st time I heard Zoom was the version with LL Cool J on it. Unless a DJ leaked a track on the radio or something or you bought a bootleg from somewhere. So back when this dropped, that was the 1st official song I seen with Dre and Snoop other than Still D.R.E.

Heres the story as I read many years ago from an interview. Snoop was still on Death Row and really didnt have no beef with Dre once Pac died and Suge was in jail. I think theres even a pic of Daz, Snoop, B-Real and Dre hanging out at Dres playing Playstation or something.

Snoop and Dre thought it would be cool to do a reunion track and possibly an album called "Break Up to Make up" (thus why on Snoops verse of zoom original he says that in the first line). Death Row put a stop to it and wouldnt allow Dre to release the song with there artist on it, which was the last straw for Snoop, who immediately tried to escape death row, eventually finding a bidder to buy him from Death Row.

Since Dre couldnt use Snoop, he got LL on it and they released it on the Bulworth soundtrack

This was certainly one of the albums - if not the album - that solidified my love for Hip-Hop. My big brother bought this, but it only took about a month before I hogged it for myself entirely.

The record still sounds as fresh today as it did when it came out. Even though I got a couple hundred records by now, there's only a handful that are like that. Still bumping this shit, not looking like I'm gonna get tired of it anytime soon either.

Cant be certain to be honest but definately post death row coz Dre started messing with B-Real and Muggs round 96-98 for a bit plus playstation wasnt out until like 96 was it?

Never got the hype about Six-Two. He barely dropped any bars on that album and they weren't any better than Hittman's rhymes.

1st chronic knocks this out the park...good lp.couple fillers(bang bang, murdera, the song for his brotha)where all fillers..but dope album.

Great thread Rud, props homie.

There's many things I've picked up on over the years listening to the album...

- MC Ren's voice on the chorus for "Bang Bang" ( makes sense since his verse got cut from the song )
- that ticking time bomb that goes off in the middle of "The Watcher" never gets old
- if you listen to the instrumental version of Murder Ink with the volume way up, there's so much going on in that beat...sounds are just crawling all over the place
- didn't notice it at first but Dre calls Eminem "nigga" during What's The Difference ( LOL )
- D.O.C.'s voice in "The Next Episode", noticed it right away but it's tucked in there

There's others but top to bottom, it's probably my favorite album ever. The production, the mixing, it's incredible. I think Dre can make something as dope as "2001" but only time will tell if that's the case. But for the period of time in which it came out, the history leading up to Chronic 2001 and the impact it has 10 years later, it's seemingly impossible to top.

How come people don't like "Murder Ink", that track was tight as fuck. I always wished Dre had a verse on it.

I don't have it anymore but it's not really very different compared to the version that was released on the album.
