Title: Computer Help!
Post by: Meho on December 07, 2009, 07:25:17 AM
So I woke up today, turned on my pc and all of a sudden I get in that menu on Windows XP, where I have options for "safe mode","star windows normally" and "start with last known working configuration". I can only get through with the safe mode option, it just restarts with the other 2 options. So what do I do ?

You can't reset it to the last known good config?? If not get in with safe mode an run a virus scanner

take it to a local computer shop. you probably have a stop 0x7b error message and need to run chkdsk on the tower outside of windows.

Fixed. Well yesterday it worked normal again but today I woke up and bam safemode. I'll try with a couple more anitvirus programs but it's wierd because I have Eset Smart Security doing a check every two days and it never found anything. The only thing that I can think of is that when I downloaded from Megupload a pop up window appeared. I didn't click on it or anything but it slowed down my pc for about 5 minutes. Didn't think much of it, maybe thats the cause.

Ok, here's an update:

If I turn my computer off and then on during the day (so, that means there's about 2 hour gap) everything works fine. But when I turn it off when I go to sleep and then turn it on in the morning (about 8 hour gap) it only works on safe mode, once I'm in the safe mode I just click "restart" and everything works fine. Now, I've ran tests for Eset Smart Security anti virus program, Anti Malware and Spybot Search And Destroy... and everything is clean. Any ideas guys ?

it's too early to tell, but it sounds like a hardware issue.

maybe you should check your harddrive for errors.
Windows has a tool for that, are you familiar with it?

Had the same problem like 1 month ago. But after I booted in safemode, I couldn't boot back to normal. It turns out to be a hard drive problem, which then died. So like Dre-Day said, it's must be a hardware problem.

Yeah, sounds like either a hard-drive or RAM issue.. could be the graphics card as well..

Usually happens after 3-6 years, typical for older computers.. especially if they're running hot, without proper cooling.
If you have a disc with XP or preferably Win 7, I'd try a fresh install (preferably on a new hdd or even better, a ssd), after backing up all you need on another hdd or external hdd.

It's often the hdd that slows down or malfunctions, and XP needs a fresh re-install from time to time, it grows into a monster over the years.

I have this computer since 02. And yeah the cooling is terrible, on days it sounds like an airplane is about to take off. But I got a new hard drive in May this year after my computer crashed. So basically I have to reinstall Windows XP ?

i wouldn't do that yet, but Jome makes a valid point about computers running Windows.

sure.

- go to 'my computer'
- place the mouse cursor on your hard drive icon (by default it's labelled C: but yours might have a different letter)
-press the right mouse button
- a menu will appear: select the option properties
-a window will appear: you'll see multiple tabs. you need to go to the tab Extra (or Tools: not sure what it's called in the English version of Windows)

-click on 'error checking'
-another window will open: make sure that both options are checked and press start.
Windows will probably tell you that you can't scan for errors right now, but need to reboot first, so click on yes/ok
-restart the computer

Died as couldn't boot anymore and end up losing my hard drive. Before I could boot in safe mode, then I tried to Repair it with the Window CD, then wasn't even working in safe mode. You might want to try that.. But it didn't worked well on me. But if you want to try it before you format here's the link http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) it's the second part.

here is a good test to check if the hard drive is good.

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso

burn it to a cd and boot to it. run the advance test. if its bad it will tell you.

do this before you try a repair install.

Well, I did what Dre Day showed me (thanks a bunch btw), I ran tests for C and D. In the end they show results but you have like 2 seconds to read a few paragraphs, I couldn't tell shit. So, I'm gonna turn it off now and go to sleep, hope fully when I wake up it's fine, if not I'll try what Pgb and Big B advised.

no poblem; haha, well you don't need to understand the test results ;)
it automatically fixed errors if there were any.

This shit is buckwild. Had lots of troubles today: woke up, turned it on and the usual: nothing, had to go into safe mode, restart in the safe mode and I was in. But this time

a) after a minute or two the screen blacked out for a second and I got this:

b) After that happened I had to restart in order to changes regarding the graphic card took place and then it really went bend. I could only access the safe mode and even if I restarted nothing happened, only safe mode was the option. After 3,4 try I got this note, here's what I could understand, the rest was some codes and shit:
Quote
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming hardware incorrectly.

c) After that I tried 4,5 times again to go into safe mode (which I was able to) and restart but nothing happened. Until that graphic card sign I got earlier made me remember that 2 years back I had a similar problem and the tech guy just opened the computer and shook the graphic card a little bit (put it in her place). So I opened the computer and I basically did nothing just touched a few things like a complete amateur I am and closed it. Now it works again. I don't know if I did anything (I wouldn't put too much hope on it), I think I just got lucky. I'm still afraid to turn off the pc when I go to sleep.

Looks like the thing you tried found some problem and couldn't fix it. So atleast now you know it's a problem with your graphic card, if anything happens just change it.
Title: Re: Computer Help!
Post by: Jome on December 11, 2009, 05:26:51 PM
Could be that the GFX-card was slightly out of the slot, or crippled by heat/dust.. if that's not the case, the error-messages might indicate that the GFX-card is facing death soon.

usually the graphics card comes with an install CD, but based on your reaction, i don't think you know if you have it. ;)
that's ok, you can always get the latest software from the internet.

in case you don't know which graphics card you have:

-go to the start menu
-click on control panel

or
(http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/ControlPanel/xpControlPanel03.gif)

-if it looks like the first picture, you need to go to performance & maintenance.

-click on system
-go to the tab 'hardware'

now you should see a list of hardware components
-click on the + sign to the left of display adapters

now you should see the name of your graphics card, you need that when downloading the software here:

^how do I know which one I need =/
32/64 bit?

if you have Windows XP, you can easily find out:

-go to the start menu
-click on control panel

or
(http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/ControlPanel/xpControlPanel03.gif)

-if it looks like the first picture, you need to go to performance & maintenance.

-click on system

you should now see some basic info about your Windows Version.
if you don't see any mention of 64-bit then you have the 32-bit version.

not sure if you have the english version of windows, but the instructions shouldn't be too hard to follow regardless

that could mean multiple things, so let's find out.

so you mean that you pulled out the power cable?
strange, i don't think you did anything wrong.

well the good news is, you hear a sound, which means Windows detects something ;)

let's see if Windows tells you something about the issue.

go to Control panel, it looks like this:

-go to system and maintenance, or whatever it's called in your version

-click on device manager
(http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/images/Vista/system_maintain.jpg)

you'll see a list of hardware.
not sure where the drive is divided into ( mine for example, is listed as a hard disk, but this may differ)
i found a picture that shows the possible locations:

i'm quite sure your device has an exclamation symbol next to it, something like this(different device off course):

click on the device, and read any available information about the issue

Since this has turned into a FAQ thread for Dre-Day I have another small problem. I've got this folder that I can't delete. I keep getting the message as if the files are in use, so I can't delete them. But I haven't used them in like 6 months (nothing important, some old video files). So basically, how do I delete something that Windows doesn't let me ?

well, you have spybot search and destroy installed right?
the installer came with a separate program, called file shredder

to check if it's installed, go to the start menu and look under "spybot - search and destroy"

i see.

yeah that must be causing the issue then  ;)

you can't remove that cable from the adapter right?

if not, then you need to replace the adapter.
as you probably understand, you can't just replace it with a random adapter.
so i wouldn't experiment.

i wouldn't say that i'm an adapter expert, but i do know that you don't have to buy an adapter from the same manufacturer as the one from your external hard disk.

information located on the adapter, that are essential:

AC Input
DC Output

also, your new adapter needs to have the same connector as your old one ( 4-pin).
not sure if this connector has a special name, i may need to do some searching, to help you find the right adapter.

you mean despite the fact that the pin was broken that long?

well i don't have an explanation for that
Electronics don't make sense sometimes.

it's just that, at this point we don't know if your files are still intact.
but we do know that there are two possibilities left: the drive is unrepairable, or the powercable is not functioning properly anymore (despite the fact that the drive power light is on)

we could search the internet for "troubleshooting external hard drive"

Files are probally intact.

WHen I got this laptop I used the harddisk to get all my files back, When My laptop broke it wouldn't connect anymore to my laptop.
Then I had to use my dad's computer for a while where he did work untill my dad pulled out the cable (Ironically the same day I got my ipod back =/). Since I needed music on my ipod I decided to connect it to my old computer, here it worked again (probally still works).

Now that I got my laptop back I still can't connect it.

ok, let me get this straight: you successfully connected your ipod to your old computer,
you're not talking about the external harddrive right?

after all you wrote:

^yes on multiple computers even.

Even a different usb-harddisc cable.

It stopped working after I pulled the calbe out when on I belief.

in that case, i misunderstood you before.

i'm glad the connector isn't a problem then  :)
do you have any other USB devices?

if so, do they work properly when you connect them to your laptop?

strange.

could you go back to device manager again & look under 'universal serial bus controllers'?
i'd like to know if you see any other exclamation marks (no need to connect the drive)

Me again. This time, the monitor went dead. I have several sources for monitor (tv ect) and they work except for the computer one. Any suggestions ?

Pretty sure that just means you need a new one. Sorry.

Nah I don't think it's dead because like I said other sources work so the monitor itself works. I'm thinking it has something to do with a graphic card again ?
