Yeah, it's the best player. Plays almost every file that's out there.

I use shark007 codec pack. Works like a charm, it plays everything even in Windows Media Center.

And if that doesn't work I'll re-install VLC. I installed that about 5 years ago.

Don't know if what media player your are using but if it's Media Center, here is the guide I used: http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/01/playing-mkvs-in-media-center.html
That website is gold.

use http://www.cccp-project.net/
click the download cccp link
it comes with ffdshow and mpc-hc (the best player for windows) in an installable pack. with vlc you will experience alot of blocking or artifacts depending on how the mkv (720p or 1080p x264 rips?) are encoded

how can you burn mkv files to play on your dvd player hooked up to your tv?
-
you'll need to convert it using meGUI (windows) or visualhub (osx)

Yeah, you need to convert it but when you do the quality won't be same.

I use KMplayer, its a great player, plays everything- no problems with it at all. Plays mkv. files great.

MKV Player is a good solution: https://mkv-player.en.softonic.com/
But I have many mkv videos in large size so I still need to convert them to MP4 with h.264 codec. I don't notice any quality damage after conversion. Here is the video conversion tool that supports kind of video and audio conversion inculding mkv to mp4, avi to mkv and so on: Three Useful Methods to Convert AVI to MKV without Losing Quality (http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/how-to-convert-avi-to-mkv.html)
