Title: Stat Quo - Statlanta
Post by: Iowa1 on July 07, 2010, 05:21:25 PM
What are everyone's thoughts on the project?  For those that don't know, you can listen to all the tracks via his myspace.  I have yet to find a link for the lp but listening to the tracks - he has heat - straight quality.

It's what I expected which was dope.  It delivered but did not wow me.  Based on some of the lyrics he sounds like he's cooking up heat for his next album.

"Spaceship" IS STRAIGHT HEROIN.  I want my folks to play that at my funeral.

Actually good to see positive comments concerning Stat.  I know he wont do large #s but this huge.  This is quality music & will be puchased on Tuesday.  In the meantime I am on the prowl for the hookup.  He has come along way since his Underground Atlanta series.  I STILL jam part 3 and 4 on the regular.  That was right when he got picked up by Afermath/Shady.  Damn, that seems like forever ago.

For real, was expecting huge things to pop off for him, especially after hearing "The Future"

Haven't heard it, I'm sure it's good (I will check it out soon) so excuse my arrogant comment but it's sad to see this album finally released probably 100% changed from the way it was originally supposed to be released. I want to hear the Dre tracks, Eminem, G-Unit, Scarface and any other big artist he recorded with.

He done recorded the album 5 or 6 times.  You're talking about probably a 50 to a hundred or so tracks.

He's a better rapper now than he was on Shady/Aftermath.

I agree, he did sound much hungrier back when he first got signed BUT his subject matter at that time was typical (cars, bling, etc.).  Since he's left the label his subject matter and flow seems less pushed and is more liquid (fluid).  Like I said, I have enjoyed most everything he has put out.  Has anyone heard anything more on the possible 100% produced Toomp album that he was talking about on 1 of his last mixtapes?  AND if anyone can hook me up in the PM arena with a link I would appreciate that immensely.

1. The Beginning - Not bad intro. First line "Statlanta with no Em/Dre" is just sad though lol. I bet this original album was gonna' be phenomenal. Cool opening track. - 3.5/5
2. Welcome Back - Beat is cool. Marsha sounds good on this. Another decent cut. - 3.75/5
3. Ghetto USA - Favorite track so far. Dude on the hook sounds dope over it. Stat spittin' real shit too. - 4.25/5
4. Dedicated - Not bad. Another just above sub par album track. I'm lovin' the lyrics and story but it feels like something is missing. Almost like an amateur attempt. - 3.5/5
5. Success - This beat is banging. Think I've heard it before but not 100%. Again, nothing special though. - 3.5/5
6. Catch Me - Stat is too good for the type of production he's getting. - 3.5/5

7. Cry - British singer? It works though. Again, beat is so so. Decent cut. - 3.75/5
8. Space Ship - Same story as all the tracks before it. Cool hook, good Stat performance and weak beat. - 3.5/5

9. Lie to You - This is more like it. I expected this to be better because of the guests. The beat is great and Raheem kills the hook. Of course Devin fits this shit big time too. - 4.5/5
10. Alright - Another track I expected to sound better due to a Talib Kweli appearance and it does. The hook is real dope. Beat is cool. - 4/5
11. What I Like - Not my style. - 2.75/5
12. Penthouse Condo - Not bad. - 3/5

Best tracks:
Lie to You
Alright
Ghetto USA

Overall: 3/5

Overall Thoughts: Stat is a very good MC but he's not getting the right beats. His artistry is miles ahead of the producers he's working with and that's sad to see. This ends up being a sub par album due to what sounds like mainly amateurish producers. Hopefully his career goes down the same aisle as Killer Mike. Mike has always been a phenomenal MC but I felt his first solo album was held back by production - And when the industry began noticing more and more how dope he was, better producers started to fuck with him and he's built a very nice career (mainly independent) for himself. Hopefully it plays out the same way for Stat Quo.

Good review. Missing the banging tracks I was expecting from Stat Quo. Standout tracks for me are Catch me and Lie To You, which I'd gave a 4/5 for both. Maybe What I Like too, but as soon as I heard it it sound like the beat is rip off of another track that I can't remember. This is a 3/5 album. Expected better from Stat..

Penthouse Condo is my joint.  Stat sounds the smoothest over that joint.
