Title: RARE: Big L and his killer in the same pic!
Post by: DEKO on January 29, 2011, 10:39:11 AM

It's from The Big Picture bootleg, but in better quality ofcourse. It also got the "Supposed" killer of Big L, Gerard Woodley in the picture.  :o

From Left to right:
Big L, Kareem (Doc), Reggie White, who used to be a boxer, childhood friend of Big L, Gerard Woodley to the far right.

The photo was taken on 139th n 7th ave, it was taken during the Annual african day parade in Harlem. The photo was taken in late 96 or very early 97. This is really freaking me out!

Here's another one! Gerald Woodley is the 2nd guy on the far left! :o

Well you thought wrong. Everybody knows he did it! Wikipedia says this: At 8:30 pm on February 14, 1999, Big L was shot nine times and died on the scene in his own neighborhood. At the time of his death, Coleman's brother was in prison on drug charges. "It's a good possibility it was retaliation for something Big L's brother did, or Woodley believed he had done," said a spokesperson for the NYPD. Gerald Woodley was later released due to insufficient evidence and the murder case remains unsolved. Gerald Woodley left Harlem and was never seen again after that...

I feel like Big L would have gone off to go down as the best if everyone lived.

I use to say Biggie would have sold out & Pac would have stayed true. But as I got a little more level headed I realized they both would of gone mainstream.

Big L doesn't seem like he could of gone mainstream lol.

Biggie was already rockin the shiny suits in 97, if he'd have stayed alive I'm sure he would have gone that route.

Pac was as mainstream as you can get, but he never sold out, was very anti-establishment.  Pac was very political and about the betterment of his people.  Biggie was all drug / gun talk and didn't give a fuck about anything but money.

Makaveli was Pac's least commercial sounding album, his sound was going away from really any semblance of pop music.  I don't think he would have sold out, he wasn't built that way.

I would like to think not. But I mean, we'll never know. I'm sure twenty years ago, nobody would guess that Ice Cube was going to have his own sitcom on a family network. :P

Big L doesn't seem like he could of gone mainstream lol.

I kinda thought that if Big L wasn't killed he would've just faded away or be a rapper who occasionally dropped albums like every 3 or 4 years (Cormega, N.O.R.E etc...).
I don't think he would've sold out, but I kinda doubt he could've made the mainstream in the first place. I mean his album is considered a classic but at the time everyone was listening to Ma$e and the Nas V.S. Jay-Z beef was strewing in the distance. Big L couldn't have fit into the mainstream scene at a time like that (LODP&D was #149 on the Billboard 200, is that really a success?). Big L was a dope-ass MC and lyricist, but I don't think he was capable of making songs that the mainstream accepted. Dude was a battle rapper so the charm his songs had were his verses, but the music industry was starting to change into a place were you needed crafted songs with hooks in order for them to top the charts. It's likely he would've disagreed with his label's creative vision and gotten dropped like Rakim at Aftermath. Even if Big L signed to Rocafella he probably would've just disappeared from the public like Memphis Bleek.

Lifestylez is generally considered one of the greatest albums of all time, you can't compare it to the war report and definitely not to the realness.

according to Jay-Z, Big L was literally days away from signing with Rocafella. i imagine Jay would've made Big L a mainstream success as well tbh

Yes because Jay-Z is known for producing mainstream successes...
He would've dropped Big L if he wasn't going to sell enough records. I'm guessing Big L would've gotten mad since he gave Jay some shine before his debut dropped and we have jay-z getting ethered more than he did because of nas.

Really? I thought it was overrated. Big L had mad skills, but when it's all said and done that album's considered great by them so-called "Hip Hop Purists" because he died. If Ma$e died before he retired everyone would be calling Harlem World a classic now.

Lifestylez is one of the 1 in 1, 000 examples of an artist making an LP with 0 filler songs  (filler meaning songs that I skip)

Lifestyles, MAkaveli, Liquid Swords, Slim Shady LP, Infinite, I Need Drugs, Thug Life vol 1, R U Still Down (posthumous), 2pacalypse Now, Illmatic, Chronic, Doggystyle (well I skip the intro on DS), Fatal's first album In The Line Of Fire and the horrorcore classics Doubelievengod by Natas and 6 Feet Deep by GRavediggaz.

that's an elite list of albums for any backpacker

Fuck weird shit. I just found an album from 1986 that features a bunch of songs "Supercat" did with "Nitty Gritty".

"Nitty Gritty" was an up and coming reggae singer that "Supercat" murdered and claimed self defense.

But to have them on album covers together is horrible for his family members to always see.

So if somebody put it ahead of Illmatic or Ready to Die you would call them mad?
Maybe it's just a New York Classic like Dogg Food to the west coast.

Except there's no such thing as a New York classic. I'd just call it one of the many great albums to come out of that region....along with a hundred other albums lol.

I wouldn't even call it the Dogg Food of New York. Because Dogg Food to west coast hip hop is way more influential and important than Lifestylez was to New York.

G Funk is what the west was known for mainstream wise. You and I could list many albums from west coast rappers we think are better than Dogg Food, but does the general populace feel that way?

New York on the other hand has had the luck of having many pure spitters being able to break through to the mainstream.
