it wouldnt surprise me if the people who are disappointed with MBDTF only listen to hip-hop and shitty metal (must with little to no focus on melody or song structure)

lots of fans lower their expectations in the current era ... most of the mainstream albums released these days are garbage or pretty much forgettable so as soon as they hear an album much better than the usual garbage, they call it a masterpiece ...

MBDTF was average.... It wasn't even Kanye's best album. Fuck what the critics say.

Still, I'm looking forward to "Watch the Throne" even though Jay-Z is on it.

yeah that last Kanye album was very very well put together, i think it got bad reviews because he didnt rap about money and rims. you know that simple minded stuff.

but its to bad jazzy j is going to be all over this album, they should call the album ''Jazzy Jay Z - Codependent''  8)

Hip hop oriented review sites and magazines mainly called Kanye's last album an average to pretty solid album, with the occasional really good review.

Non hip-hop oriented review sites and magazines loved the fuck out of the album.

The consensus among Kanye fans was that it's not the best, but it's up there for his best work.

If Watch the Throne gets even something close to the above responses, I'm going to be a happy listener.

Geez seeing the word masterpiece to describe MBDTF is depressing. Then again this is coming from the same people who were genuinely impressed with Nicki Minaj's verse on Monster. The album was average at best. His first album (minus the skits) and Graduation are both better.

Quote
MBDTF was average.... It wasn't even Kanye's best album. Fuck what the critics say.

Exactly!

The credits look really similar to MBDTF so we'll see...

No Ross or J.Cole? Surprised about Ross. J.Cole...ehh Jay-Z is just trying to ruin his career like he does all his artist.

The production on MBDTF is literally flawless. The music is on another level. If u can't see that, you're crazy. It's especially evident on tracks like Runaway, Devil in a New Dress, etc. The beat switches are out of this world
Title: Re: Jay-Z & Kanye West-Watch The Throne (Album Discussion)

The production was good on like 5 tracks, and sounded average for the rest. I listened to this album over and over & I always came to the same conclusion. It was different, I'll give him that, but I prefer "Graduation" and "The College Dropout" over it easily.

Half of the album is great, the other half got old after a few spins. If Ye left off that other half and kept some more of those G.O.O.D. Friday songs for his album, MBDTF could have been his best album.

The problem with something like MBDTF is it's too new for most people to truly appreciate. People just want to throw out older stuff as superior and condemn the newer stuff most times. Much as his personality can be grating to me at times, his production skills are incredible.

Am I the only one who thinks "Graduation" is his best?

"Drunken Hot Girls" was the worst song & that's such a chill vibe song.

However, that's not an insult to any of his other work. I think he can arguably be considered the best artist of the last decade.

College Dropout, Late Registration (the most underrated album. He condenses the tracklist, it could be his best), Graduation, My Dark Twisted Fantasy. Who else put out four incredible albums? Each being interchangeable as "the best", depending on who you ask. & no matter what order you have it, the best & the worst are barely better than one another.

To the public, that was his only blemish. But I actually enjoyed that album. He had some dope cuts on there.

But I don't talk about that when I talk about his Hip Hop. Even he said it wasn't intended in any shape or form to be a Hip Hop album.

Yup he's extremely consistent and released new shit on the regular, add his work with jay z, common, John legend etc and you've got some amazing tracks. I think the tracks he did with nas were the best on hip hip is dead.

MBDTF isn't my favourite Kanye Album, or even my second favourite (College Dropout, Graduation), but the album is CLASSIC in the truest sense of the word.  THe only song that isn't all that is Monster, but people seem to love that shit.  Rick Ross wasn't necessary on Devil either, but these are minor flaws compared to the overall feel of the album.  Rhianna on All of the Lights is annyoing as shit too.  Musically, though,l the album  far exceeds almost every hiphop album ever made.   Hiphop heads don't seem to love it, but fans of indie type shit (ie music snobs) think its the greatest album of the year.  The reviews from highly critical sites like Pitchfork were glowing with praise.

Kanye isn't for everyone, this much is clear.  But he puts more effort into creating unique, yet accessible music, than anyone else in hiphop.

I agree with Jaydc, he's 4 for 4, and all of the albums stand alone.

However, what Kanye has been lacking lately is with his subject matter, and it appears WTT will be more of the same (especially with Jay on every song).  Looking forward to the album, but not loving anything off it so far

Just because you're an indie fan, doesn't necessarily mean they are music snobs.  I'm into all kinds of music, and probably the type of music that stands out the most is the "indie" ones.  Snob? I'm far from it.  Really, every genre has their snobs.

Hip Hop Snobs on A Tribe Called Quest's Electric Relaxation

"182 people think Lil Wayne is a good rapper."
"Lil Wayne watched this video 182 times. Says real hip hop makes him feel "untalented". NEWSFLASH..a lot of people feel that way about you. Vanilla Ice thinks you're a joke."

Most popular comments lol

And practically every hip hop song from this era has similar type of comments.

Kanyes albums FEEL like albums. Thier very cohesive and you can tell he spends a lot of time and effort making them. Each one is crafted exactly how he wants to sound, everything is mixed and mastered to it's full potential. If rappers spent half the time kanye does hip hop would be releasing a lot more quality albums. Most artists lack any kind of vision and thier albums feel like songs slapped together, like a snoop or game album. Some people can not like kanye but you have to respect his effort. He cares about the music. Same with cudi, I'm not huge on cudi but his albums are well crafted and not songs slapped together with a who's who of whatevers hot at the moment.

this is the whole purpose of releasing the digital version then the physical ... I guess they can wait shipping the copies to the retail stores until the digital verstion hit Itunes

AND Jay may have threaten to actively sue people leaking the album behind closed doors ( won't prevent people to do but still)...

So Jay'Z's manager has said the album will NOT leak. I don't know how u make a prediction like that, but it's a bold one.
this is the whole purpose of releasing the digital version then the physical ... I guess they can wait shipping the copies to the retail stores until the digital verstion hit Itunes
But often with album that hit digital/physical same day (basically all CD's), you still see lots of "itunes" rips leak before actual CD rips. I'm surprised an "itunes" rip of this hasn't leaked yet.

LMAO so true

Every time it bumps, I'm looking for that reply that says it leaked  :D

At this point I don't expect anything before after midnight Sunday

I wonder if more major artists will start releasing projects like this

Word is that all the people that worked on the album, (engineers, producers, etc) got 30,000 dollar rolexes as a gift from Hov and Kanye. I'd say that is enough motivation for me LMAO

Anyways, don't be too hyped about this album, last time Jay was making hot music was 8 years ago .. you heard the result for that Em/Royce EP , very forgettable .... I expect the similar outcome for WTT , just with much better production ... plus the 4 tracks we've already heard are far from being impressive

There is no way this is on par with Bad Meets Evil.

Still, today.

Jigga >>>>>>>>>>>> Eminem
Kanye >>>>>>>>>>>> Royce

Just my opinion.

And we already know production will be better in a MAJOR way; won't even be close.

Jigga has fallen off hard (weak flow/voice, poor lyrics) ...  it's just less noticeable than Em who makes it more obvious with the accent , screaming and rapping about nonsense ... I'm just saying that I wouldn't expect a great album ... if it would have been released around the time the Black album/College Dropout dropped , no doubt about it , but now ?

As far as Kanye he's still making good music but he has gone worse with each rap album ... just my opinion

Kanye has never disappointed me while rapping.

As for Jay, he's rarely disappointed me. I was feelin' BP3, American Gangsta, Kingdom Come.

This album has the making to be really good.

I didn't dig Kingdom Come minus a few songs, but I loved American Gangsta & BP3 was very tight as well.

I seriously disagree with u wcsoldier about Kanye, but opinions is assholes. MBDTF was a helluva album.

Are you guys all smoking crack? Kanye West has just has released one of the hottest mainstream hip hop albums of past few years. His production gets better with each album. I am not a big fan of jay-z but the man is a legend. He has tons of albums and all of his albums have been platinum (correct me if i am wrong). He still delivers clever rhymes and can hold his own on the mic unlike other vets who have fallen off (snoop dogg, hate to say it but ice cube as well). This is going to be a hot ass album. All the tracks I have heard personally have been banging and have more replay value than royce and em album (the only song I liked from that album was fast lane.. everything else put me to sleep).

Nope second most to the Beatles

Most number-one albums
The Beatles (19)
Jay-Z (11)
Elvis Presley (10)
The Rolling Stones (9) (tie)
Bruce Springsteen (9) (tie)
Barbra Streisand (9) (tie)

Still very impressive to see his name second on that list. Especially because the music industry was much different back then.

Jay-Z makes music that gets different reception from everyone.

Some people love American Gangsta, some hate it. Some love Kingdom Come, some think it's wack. Some people think Blueprint is his best album, some think it's terrible.

He makes hate it or love it music. Some have him top five all-time. Some say he doesn't belong in the top twenty-five lol.

Debating Jay is a lost conversation.

Now of course this will be an album I'll listen to 100 times so there's a good chance these ratings will change, but here's a quick review after one listen for anyone wondering..

1. No Church in the Wild - 4.25/5. Very nice intro beat. Jigga's opening verse is pretty damn tight. Frank Ocean sounding pretty good. Kanye has some SICK ass lines as well.
2. Lift Off - 3.75/5. This is great musically. Beyonce sounding very nice. The music is actually better than any of the rap verses IMO. It can be a hit record.
3. Niggas in Paris - 4.5/5. Interesting beat in the begin. It's a MONSTER when it drops though. Jigga on his braggadocios shit. Highlight track so far.
4. Otis - 4.25/5. Everyone has heard this by now. I dig it a whole lot now just like I dug it when it came out.
5. Gotta Have It - 4/5. Beat is cool. Kanye & Jigga trading bars and they sound like a duo who been doin this 10+ years. Interesting hook concept (prod by The Neptunes).

6. New Day - 4.25/5. Kanye/RZA/Mike Dean? Sick production credit. Very nice beat as expected. Really liking the instrumentation. LOL at Kanye's line about white people. Jay-Z verse about his future child(ren) is pretty sick.

7. That's My Bitch - 4/5 Interesting music. Background vocals by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Connie Mitchell (Sneaky Sound System) & Elly Jackson (La Roux). These seems fit to Kanye well. His flow is crisp on it. It's more musically rich than anything once again. Jay's verse is very crisp as well. I would compare the beat to "Lift Off" in terms of being musically rich but the verses are better on this.

8. Welcome to the Jungle - 4/5. I was worried about this when I saw Swizz Beats. It's an interesting beat. Either annoying or cool lol. I like it when it picks up. Again, I dig Jigga's flow. Kanye comes in nicely again. A bit of trading bars here as well.

9. Who Gon' Stop Me - 4.5/5. This beat is mothafuckin tight. Really nice sample too. Kanye doing his low muffled voice/flow early on. Again, Jigga's flow sounding very clean. Thankfully Kanye's verse back to his regular voice. Oh when the beat switches up, makes it even more of a monster.

10. Murder to Excellence - 4.25/5. I dig this beat. Lovin' the background sample. Kanye/Jigga touching on some real shit.

11. Made in America - 4.5/5 I really like how Frank Ocean sounds on this. Kanye's opening verse is dope, very on point with the content/subject matter. Jay-Z's verse is cool but Ye's really stands out.

12. Why I Love You - 4.25/5. Good beat. Chorus is hit/miss. Not sure how I feel about it yet. I guess the sample is pretty cool though. Jigga's opening verse is tight. Jay starts the 2nd verse too, and I recognize the lines from the documentary they released; sick lines. Kanye also comes in, they trade bars in this verse and it adds a sick dimension to the song. In the end, I dig this.

BONUS TRACKS:

For some reason, I have these in 128 rip (the rest of the album was 256) so some of these may sound better later when better quality leaks.

1. Illest Motherfucker Alive - 4.5/5. Starts at the 3minute mark (just silence before then). This beat is a mothafuckin monster when it drops. This the song from the documentary they previewed with Russell Crowe in the studio. This is very tight. LOL "got staples in my dick, why? fuckin' centerfolds." Jay-Z got some sick lines too, "I got 5 more rings than Michael Jordan had."

2. H.A.M. - 3.75/5. Everyone's heard it. I still dig the verses and the beat (for the most part). Beat is too busy for my liking but it's still cool.

3. Primetime - 4/5. No ID on the boards, his beats always have that "Frank Sinatra singing in a bar in the 40s" feel lol. The sample is very cool too. Kanye's verse is really good, better than Jigga's.

4. The Joy - 4.25/5. Very happy to be getting a mixed/mastered version of this. Always loved this since it first came out. The sample is beautifully soulful! Good job Pete Rock.

Overall this is a very good and more so than all, consistent release.

IMO, (after only listen) I'd break it down like this:

Best tracks: (4.5+)
Niggas in Paris
Who Gon' Stop Me
Made In America
Illest Motherfucker Alive

Those 4 slightly stand out to me above the rest.

Great tracks: (4.25)
No Chuch in the Wild
Otis
New Day
Murder to Excellence
Why I Love You
The Joy

Good tracks: (4)
Gotta Have It
That's My Bitch
Welcome to the Jungle
Primetime

Good, not as good as the rest (anything below a 4)
Lift Off
Ham

I was blown away that it didn't leak. Now I'm blown away by the material. This is incredible from start to finish.

Outside of H.A.M. (a bonus track), this is the first album in a long time I heard without listening to half of it leaked before it dropped.

Technically speaking, this is album of the decade. ;D 8)

Solid production , like the attention to details in that department ... Illest mofo alive has the best production ( need a better quality though) ... hooks are a huge letdown  ... a 3/5 album for me ... it's more an album for mainstream music fans in general than straight hip hop fans

yep ... this ain't even closed to College Dropout or The Black Album ... seems like people have lowered their standards a lot and compare each album to the current music quality ... which of course will result in a higher rating

MBDTF is better , even if I wasn't a fan of this album either

I don't think it's fair to compare this to MBDTF. That was a solo Kanye album, this is a duo. That album was very personal to Kanye after the Tay Swift incident and everything else he's been through. Plus he basically produced MBDTF himself, he had SO much more help and different producers on here.

Apples & Oranges IMO.

On a 2nd listen, some tracks already sounded better and they were already amazing to begin with.

This album is fucking phenomenal. There's only 3 songs I'm not crazy about right now (Ham, Lift Off & Primetime)

No Church In The Wild came in hard, but the singing and auto-tune wasn't doing it for me.
Lift Off I don't really like, Beyonce really dominates the track.
Ni66as In Paris bangs.
Otis is okay, feeling the old sample.
Gotta Have It has an older feel to it, in a good way of course.
New Day production sounds great, real smooth track. Again not feeling the auto-tuned sample but I bet it'll grow on me.
That's My Bitch starts off raw, but then throws you off with the sample. I really like it.
Welcome To The Jungle I don't really like. Raps are okay but Fuck Swizz Beats!
Who Gon Stop Me sounds great, some experimental dubstep production. Not digging Jay's intro, though.
Murder To Excellence sounds more like a Jay track. No comment, nice shit.
Made IN America is a little too sweet for my taste, Frank Ocean can sing but if you sing about sweet baby jesus.. nah..
Why I Love you is okay, except for the chorus.

Overall the production you either love or you hate, the same goes for the auto-tuned parts.
Rest is great. This will go platinum no doubt.

damn I swear Kanye must be enamored with French electro music. first Stronger, now Why I Love You (sampling Cassius's I Love You So). Ed Banger records must be thankful for the royalty checks they're receiving lol.

http://www.youtube.com/v/E6nrdCDG-zo

I thought the same thing as King Petey for the autotune thing. As for the album in its entirety i need more spins .I'll try to post a detailed review later. but it's nice so far. Nothing really mind-blowing but the production is very impressive although a little bit all over the place.

Overall this album sounds more of a Hip-Pop album than a Hip-Hop album. The emphasis is not put on the raps themselves (the vocals sound subdued compared to the music), the subject matter is a bit redundant and doesn't really appeal to me. That was to be expected coming from people that nowadays belong more to mundane circles than hip-hop circles but with such legends as RZA & Mike Dean behind the boards I was still expecting some more conventional shit.

Still gotta check the bonus tracks though.

Quick question : am i the only one thinking it was Charlie Wilson singing right after the first verse on That's My Bitch???

not really feeling the album the way some others are.  Its not bad, but didnt really see the chemistry between these two I was hoping for.  Seems more like Jay-Z just tagged along for a Kanye album.  And I would rather just hear Kanye on this since he outshined Jay-Z on basically every track.

if most tracks I rated were 4.5/5 and 5/5 then I can say this would be "near classic" or even a classic album in today's music scene, but that's not the case... just a solid album musically overall, no more no less  8)

Nope, I looked up the credits the second I heard it. I was surprised that was someone else than Charlie. And whats up with the Pink Panther type theme at the end of some of the songs LOL. Makes me like wtf everytime it comes out of the blue

But Yeah, I've been bumping it all day and the songs are starting to grow on me I must say. When you're not expecting a specfic type of sound and you go in with an open mind, it's actually dope. You just gotta open your horizon a little I guess.

Is Niggas in Paris produced by Soulja Boy?

Jokes aside, I like the production on this album. This is refreshing to hear more synthy rap that's not sounding techno rubbish pop. Original sample and I like the vibe. Still... Pete Rock killed every1 else on the beats  ;D

I think that "Ni$#as in Paris" and "Who Gone Stop Me" are really dope tracks, and "Lift Off" would've been the best song if there was no singing and more rapping. The rest wasn't all that impressive to me, but it wasn't wack either. Might grow on me but I doubt it.

I've just skimmed through the 1st 6 tracks and the amount of Auto-Tune is killing me. Production is strong though I have to say. Jay-Z has fallen off so bad its unreal that I no longer look forward to a new release of his.

And after skimming through the whole lot, production wise the majority of it is strong. The majority of the hooks are terrible. Lift Off was started of great then Beyonce came in and destroyed the song. And Jay-Z came very weak on this album. His flows are horrible.

As I read other message boards, review sites, and other opinions on Watch the Throne it seems that one of the common criticisms of this album is their self-boasting.  What were they expecting when the album itself is called, "Watch the Throne"?  Plus, you still have songs like No Church in the Wild, New Day, Welcome to the Jungle, Murder to Excellence, Made in America, and Why I Love You. People always want rappers to spit about what they know, and here we have two of the biggest egos in hip hop getting together to record, and that's exactly what they're doing.  To me that seems like a good balance.

Solid album with some fillers. There's some autotune but it doesn't detract from the music. My fav song on the album is New Day and it has some autotune on the hook. Wish they had rapped over the beat at the end of that song though.

Here's my review after listening to this album a good number of times.  It's a pretty good album.  7.5-8.0 range.  This rating applies to the regular version, that doesn't include the four bonus tracks.  Obviously, they intend for people to judge Watch the Throne with the first twelve tracks.

One of the few problems I have with the album is some of the hooks, well specifically in Lift Off and Made in America.  I think both of the hooks are very corny and I get turned off to the song.  Lift off is kind of like a poorer version of All of the Lights, it could have been slightly better without that hook or at least say something else in it.  And in Made in America, as soon as Frank Ocean says "Sweet baby Jesus..."  I cringe.  It's just fucking corny lol.  Other than that, the song is pretty good.  I like how ridiculous Niggas in Paris is,  :D  it's exactly the type of shit I want from a Kanye and Jay Z album that's titled Watch the Throne.  I'm not expecting a damn Public Enemy album, so I don't know why some react this way.   The track that stands out the most for me is New Day, great great great song.

looks like more Jay-z "im the man, i'm so rich" themed tracks are coming

exactly... ***yawn*** Jay will probably throw in a token track where he tries to be "deep", just so his dickriders can point to that song whenever somebody points out how meaningless his music is

what passes for "deep" for Jay-Z will probably be a line about 12 years ago when he used to sell coke, and he had to struggle to keep his bitches from findin out about eachother, or he had to decide whether to buy a Benz or a Maybach, or whether to put down the drug sales and pick up the mic... **yawn**

....Jay isnt exactly 2pac or Em, where he like to open up about any insecurities

Pac revealed his insecurities and how ones fate can twist and turn, and the universal sadness of life that all people could relate to when things dont go as planned and you question where your place is in the world, but try to make the most out of it all, and rise up....

Well, uh, he's not serious about the bar mitzvahs.  That's just a joke after saying he's "cuttin' the time in half".  He's not talking about a divorce, he's talking about actually leaving his son.  Divorced/separated parents still have the damn option to see their kids.  Even if his mom is absolutely horrible, he's not gonna give a fuck and still see his kid.

Anyways, You do realize how fucking corny it would be if Jay Z would all of a sudden become a conscious rapper?  Especially on album called, "Watch the Throne".

Em's not a conscious rapper, but look at the depth of his work.  The dramatic picture he paints in his verse, and how he leaves himself vulnerable and exposed.

Eminem - "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"

-shits on Jay-Z's whole career!   Compare that with a Jay-Z verse about his baby moms.  Em has the courage to put his whole life out there for the listeners, all his insecurities, its all out there on a first name basis.  Em puts his life into his art.  Jay can't come close to that.

Maybe Jay-Z ain't that type of fucking dude that wants to talk about his personal life.  Maybe he's never had big as problems as Eminem had with Kim.  I just don't see how Jay-Z will get a pass for talking about his struggles, when he's one of the richest hip hop artists out there.  That shit is not gonna cut it and it will be lame.

And if this quadruple meaning few lines Jay-Z had on Otis is shit, then I don't know what to tell ya

"Arm out the window through the city I maneuver slow
Cock back, snap back
See my cut through the holes"

1.  You can see his haircut on the back of his head because he's wearing a snap back
2.  Moving his car slowly but finding the holes to pass other cars in his Maybach
3.  Arm out the window with a gun, as in a driveby, cockback
4.  talking about a running back, after the QB snaps it back to him. A RB looks for holes and makes cuts.

And this is Jay-Z way past his prime already.

Yeah, that's why I really don't fuck with Jay-Z outside of like three albums. Blueprint not even being one of them; just never really got into it, despite is being one of his best albums.

This album is just dope. From the looks of it, you're just all mad that it's got some ego rap & some "I'm sooooo good & I'm the king of Hip Hop". You guys just don't want to hear it from somebody who doesn't live up to your dream (aka favorite dead rapper) emmce. Ala Lil' Wayne. But I mean, I've been seeing Jay-Z hate on here since I've joined here, so I've almost come to expect it.

Then people like you want to go act like there hasn't been dope Hip Hop since the 90's because you're close-minded ass rejects anything that isn't up to par with Illmatic, Me Against The World or The Marshall Mathers LP. Enjoy life & expand your tastes opposed to drowning yourself with the same four artists.

I'm actually fairly certain that Jay-Z's music is more personal than Pac's. Pac had some real songs like Dear Mama and Life Goes On, but also a lot of these "deep" songs of his were about a life he didn't lead (something he's admitted in interviews). Jay-Z actually did sell drugs and did start out as a street hustler, so the fact that a lot of his music is about hustling, rags to riches is true to life. But the thing is Jay hasn't only been about hustling, he has made his share of introspective tracks. But Infinite doesn't even listen to Jay-Z so he wouldn't know that. He's only heard Jay's singles through the radio.

I only posted the Em and Pac verses to show the contrast between the supposedly "deep" Jay-Z verse that was posted on the previous page.  Because Jay-Z does attempt to make more meaningful songs from time to time, but it still comes out wack like all his other trash.

...But a rapper doesn't have to be "deep" or "conscious" to be dope.  Braggadocio raps are a staple in hip-hop music.  It would be hard to be a fan of rap and not enjoy that style.  I'm a huge fan of a lot of rappers who use a braggadocio style.  To name a few...

Snoop
Daz
Masta Ace- like the style he used on the I.N.C. album from 95
Royce 5'9"
Kurupt
Redman- he does make fun of himself sometimes, but it's not "deep" or "emo", it's just in fun
Biggie
Jadakiss
...many more

And I could also name a million songs that aren't "deep" or "emo" and shit all over Jay-Z's whole career...

-50 Cent "In The Club"
-Snoop-  "Gin and Juice"
-Masta Ace- "INC Ride"
-Biggie- "One More Chance", "Going Back To Cali", "Big Poppa"
-Xzibit- "X"
-Rakim- "Don't Sweat The Technique"
-Big Daddy Kane-  "Ain't No Half-Steppin"
-Dre- "The Next Episode"
-Daz- "In California"
-Soopafly- "Like It Or Not"

all good examples, and I could think of a thousand more.

Jay-Z empowering the word BITCH

Go harder than a nigga for a nigga go figure
Told me "keep my own money" if we ever did split up
How can somethin' so gangsta be so pretty in pictures?
With jeans and a blazer and some Louboutin slippers
Uh, Picasso was alive he woulda made her
That's right nigga Mona Lisa can't fade her
I mean Marilyn Monroe, she's quite nice
But why all the pretty icons always all white?
Put some colored girls in the MoMA
Half these broads ain’t got nothing on Willona
Don’t make me bring Thelma in it
Bring Halle, bring Penélope and Salma in it
Back to my Beyoncés
You deserve three stacks, word to Andre
Call Larry Gagosian, you belong in museums
You belong in vintage clothes crushing the whole building
You belong with niggas who used to be known for dope dealing
You too dope for any of those civilians
Now shoo children, stop looking at her tits
Get ya own dog, ya heard? That's my bitch

I was too immature
to understand your ways, inexperienced back in the days
Caused so many arguments and strays
Now I realize how to treat ya, the secret to keep ya
Bein faithful now cause now cheatin's lethal
We closer than the hands of time, deeper than the drop of mankind
I trust you dearly, I shoot blind
In time I clock figures, droppin niggaz as we rise
We all soldiers in God's eyes -- now it's time for war
Never leave me baby, I'm paranoid, sleepin witcha
loaded by my bedside crazy
Jealous when you hang wit the fellas, I wait patiently alone
anticipated for the moment you come home
I'm waitin by the phone this is true love, I can feel it
I've had a lot of women in my bed, but you the realeast
So if you ever need me call, I'll be there through it all
You're the reason I can stand tall, me and my girlfriend

Like, you understand what you're saying to Jay's verse with what you just did there?

You brought up a classic Pac verse, off a classic Pac song, off a classic Pac album, when Pac was in his prime to go against a 42 year old, past prime, tight Jay verse.

Stop lmao, that's insane.

& how can you say "not now"? You're really going to sit there & say the last three Snoop CD's have been better than Jay's last three albums?

The only thing Snoop has on Jay is his one amazing classic he made 20 years ago. Jay has been far more consistent & far more lyrical throughout his career.

And I could also name a million songs that aren't "deep" or "emo" and shit all over Jay-Z's whole career...

-50 Cent "In The Club"
-Snoop-  "Gin and Juice"
-Masta Ace- "INC Ride"
-Biggie- "One More Chance", "Going Back To Cali", "Big Poppa"
-Xzibit- "X"
-Rakim- "Don't Sweat The Technique"
-Big Daddy Kane-  "Ain't No Half-Steppin"
-Dre- "The Next Episode"
-Daz- "In California"
-Soopafly- "Like It Or Not"

all good examples, and I could think of a thousand more.

I like all of these songs, but wtf are you talking by saying SHIT ON HIS WHOLE CAREER.  NOT SR IF SRS

Shit... Snoop's worst album is better than Jay's best album.  The Game Is To Be Sold album he did on No Limit back in 98' is far better than any of Jay-Z's albums.

The only thing Snoop has on Jay is his one amazing classic he made 20 years ago. Jay has been far more consistent & far more lyrical throughout his career.

Jay has been consistently average to below-average throughout his whole career, if that's what you mean.   Snoop has had more highs than just Doggystyle, he had a second coming in 99-2001 with Top Dogg, Eastsidaz first album, and Tha Last Meal

Unfortunately he isn't. Pac had some problems with Jay & clearly Brian hasn't let them go.

Snoop has been ass for 5/6ths of his career. But he was always cool with Pac, hence him saying he had a better career than a guy with 11 platinum albums, who is one billion times better lyrically.

& I'm not trying to act like Jay is some amazing lyricist. Lil' B is more lyrical than Snoop.

I agree that Jay-Z has gone into a nose dive, and needs to hang it up, but on the strength of his first 3 and 1/2 albums plus blueprint 1 hes a top ten no doubt.....comparing Daz to him?  Come on now, even the biggest death row junkies on here wouldnt make that statement.

I only posted the Em and Pac verses to show the contrast between the supposedly "deep" Jay-Z verse that was posted on the previous page.  Because Jay-Z does attempt to make more meaningful songs from time to time, but it still comes out wack like all his other trash.

what contrast? It's a verse about his future son, and its a great song.

Answer this question. Have you even listened to one Jay-Z album? How can you say something shits on his career when you obviously haven't followed his career? You're having arguments in the thread of an album that you haven't even listened to. You can't argue about music or verses you haven't listened to.

You're having arguments in the thread of an album that you haven't even listened to. You can't argue about music or verses you haven't listened to.

I've seen Jay-Z from the beginning of his career.  I remember the Source magazine ads that were already portraying him like he was a high class legend before he even proved himself.  Then I used to have this tape I would listen to before school back in Sept. 1996.  It had what they called the "Top 8 at 8" meaning the top 8 songs played at 8:00PM.  Genuine "My Pony", Aliyah "If Your Girl Only Knew", and Do or Die "Po Pimpin" were all on there and I was really feeling those songs at the moment.  Then right in the middle of this set was, "Can't Knock The Hustle".

That was the only song I used to always have to fast forward over.  I'd listen to "My Pony", and "If Your Girl Only Knew" then I'd fast forward over Jay-Z's "Can't Knock The Hustle" to get to Do or Die "Po Pimp".

This is before Pac was on record dissin Jay-Z, and I had no reason to hate Jay-Z for anything.  He was just another rapper.  I simply fast forwarded the song off instinct because the artist I was hearing wasn't dope!  I remembered Mary J.'s hook being very moving, because every once in a while I would be to lazy to run and fast forward and I'd let the song play in the background.  But Jay-Z was never impressive.  And that was in his so-called "prime".

Now years later that's the only Jay-Z song I will listen to.  It's the only Jay-Z song I like, purely for nostalgic purposes it reminds me of summer 1996 which was the most memorable time of my life.

And this is Jay-Z way past his prime already.

thats reachin!

110% certain if Jay-Z's career never took off & all his material was underground work, he would be in Brian's top five.

He just can't stand seeing a legend of the game be right in the smack center of mainstream Hip Hop in 2011.

lmao really. Infinite you admitted in various threads not bumping rappers "on principle" and saying they were wack just 'cause people from your town were listening to them. your opinions have no credibility whatsoever.

i'm not a fan of this album as explained in my previous post in this thread and let alone Jay-Z in general but saying Snoop's weakest album shits on Jay's discography is DELUSIONAL.

Reasonable Doubt > Snoop's discography bar Doggystyle and arguably the first eastsidaz album. Also Jay-Z is clearly a better rapper than Snoop, technically and lyrically. Snoop has maybe more charisma but Jay-z is a well-rounded and overall better rapper.

and since when deepness is a sine qua non" criterium to determine the value of a rapper ?? and for the records Jay has some nice "deep" records

I can slightly relate, while Jay is in my top5 along with Em and Snoop, Jay has always been force fed in to mainstream and radio, his forst two albums were straight duds and didnt go gold or platinum back then, they were appreciated way more when he dropped Vol.2 & 3 when people saw more of him, that was his frist album that sold and crossed over...but even before all that Jay had dropped "Reasonable.." after that mafioso rap phase had played out with the Firm, and critized for, and the same critics prasied him (mostly Dream Hampton who is from Brooklyn wrote for The Source and heralded "Ready To Die" better than Dre's "Chronic" album)  Jay and Big had big connections in the business mainly with critics the reason they always were getting high rating in the mag and ads when they didnt have record sales...Jay is dope but to say he is more real than Pac thats a stretch to me, he MAY have sold dope but shit to act like crack was popular in the mid 90's is on some bull shit, METH out sells any thing and every thing from the early 90's on and is still out selling shit on the streets and these fools keep rapping about crack like its fucking 88, its lame some times but to me its entertainment like "Scarface" or some shit...Pac wrote some shit that was true to his heart that and went places no one else did and seems no one else can really go, with out reaching outside their element...Jay is a dope fucking mainstream artist period, and is insightful in his own right but he has had major help along the way (The Source, Vibe, Def Jam have always put up big money from him, because of industry favors he did writing for Foxy Brown, puff etc)

Jay Z is the only rap artist with 13 solo platinum albums. He is a legend, even if you do not like him.

If you want to hear EM scream about his mom and hear his emo raps with wack ass accent, more power to you. This album is a masterpiece. Em and Royce album doesnt even come close to this.

I like New Day thru Who Gon Stop Me, which is four tracks, which is a third of the album... so I have to judge it like a movie that has a good second act within a three-act structure, if I can create an equivalency like that.  So I'll go with a "B-", or a "B" if I'm kind.  The first third of the album makes my ears bleed, while the last third is alright but not quite "good."  Just imo.  But truth be told, this is not at all the style of rapping that I'm into, which is the more laid-back, almost dance-like vibe with hardcore lyrical content, which is what a lot of the 90s was all about.  For example, I was listening to Whut Thee Album earlier today, just to pick a random example, but then to listen to Watch the Throne later in the day, there's no comparison in terms of the quality of albums they used to make back then and what they make now.

And you just said it was the only Jay-Z song you would listen to, now you listen to the whole album for nostalgic purposes? Stop lying. You have never once listened to Reasonable Doubt or any other of his albums. Jay-Z has 17 years of dope material, so for you to base your entire opinion of him off of one song is pretty fucking stupid.

And lmao at this tool for skipping over Can't Knock the Hustle to listen to My Pony.

It's here. "Watch the Throne" has caught your attention: the anticipation, fuelled by no advance copies or leaks… It's a welcome throwback to the "old school" days of album releases. It's also a rare coming together of two of the biggest rappers (and artists) on the planet on the same team. We are told that this is an "historic" occasion for our beloved genre, but be warned, dear Reader: history is written by the victors, and just because Jay-Z and Kanye West have finally made "Watch the Throne," it is still only the quality level that will dictate whether it makes it into the books as a truly memorable moment in hip hop. So, once you press play, how does it fare?

Your first impressions won't be all too favourable – BUT persist, as the album improves at a swift pace on each subsequent listen. It clocks in at a relatively lean 46 minutes, with only 12 tracks, but it is a densely packed work that takes time to reveal itself. Perhaps not so much musically (although WTT does contain many a twist) but more so lyrically, as there are "frequent blink and you'll miss it" lines and clever interplays between Jay and 'Ye. There are no guest verses from other rappers, just choruses from singers, and relative newcomer Frank Ocean manages to bag two spots on the album. He blesses the superbly understated opener "No Church in the Wild" with an almost Mos Def-like treatment (matching the moody beat effectively), and both rappers come in hard with visually-depictive verses that put the listener right firmly with them (plus at times, it's almost like a clever piece of wordplay by Ocean, as he seemingly sings "No church in a while" which feeds into the agnostic decadence).

If the first track acts as an executive summary, it hints at diverse subject matter that darts all over the place – this proves to be the case, as we jump into the prerequisite track featuring Beyonce. It's also, early on, the first disappointment of WTT, as "Lift Off" doesn't manage to get into orbit. It has an overly obvious "THIS IS EPIC" stamped on its ass, and the production sabotages B's attempts at a soaring chorus. Kanye comes in singing badly (with/without Auto Tune), and Jay spits a pointless 8 bar verse. But then, with just over a minute left, it breaks down and turns into an infinitely superior instrumental, with a gorgeous mellow roll to it. Beyonce sounds better, and it's just perplexing as to why the dominant beat even made it when the following 48 seconds fits so much better. The cringingly titled "Niggas in Paris" is, in every way, a Big Sean song from "Finally Famous" that got lost along the way. However, once you get past the ringtone melody and OTT bragging, it functions relatively well as "loud, obnoxious rap music" (and the breakdown work well, with the distorted bass contrasting well with the operatic backing vocals). The first single, and undoubted star of the album, follows – "Otis." It's an infinitely repeatable display of brashness, soul and it positively reeks of excess. The chopped up beat is vintage Kanye, and fuck knows how much it cost them to clear the sample (but it certainly explains the insane ticket pricing for their upcoming tour). In the words of Audio Two, what more can I say?

The sampling continues (one of many James Brown grunts peppering the album) although this time, it is handled by The Neptunes on the brilliant "Gotta Have It" – it is sure to weave into your brain, even if Jay makes an unwise "planking on a million" reference. Another standout brings Nina back on "New Day" – yes, it is incredibly similar to Pac's "Letter 2 My Unborn" but it's just done so well here: the reflective beat, the Simone chorus and both verses are top notch. From the tender West/Carter to the ones that go harder: "That's My Bitch" is, however, another moment of mediocrity. It samples "Apache" (like that's never been done before), and it's a throwback track that sounds digitally mastered (when analogue would have sounded better), and the chorus just doesn't function as it should, although Jay's verse is entertaining. It does carry the album forward onto the genial "Welcome to the Jungle" – remember when Swizz Beatz was an incredibly exciting teenage genius? Well, he's baaaaack! He laces an unstoppable and insistent beat for Jigga (a.k.a. "the black Axl Rose") to spit some vicious lyrics, and spellbinding couplets.

It's difficult to say if there is going to be a backlash against the next track, "Who Gon Stop Me," where Kanye spits "this is something like the Holocaust" but musically, it's another diverting moment on "Watch the Throne." Heavily influenced by the UK scene, with lashings of dubstep, and it's reminiscent of tracks like RKZ's "Gonna Be That" (watch the dope alternative edit of that song HERE). The tenth song is one that seems to have been trending on Twitter all day – "Murder to Excellence." Again, the beat splits into two, with the first being rather similar to "Power" (unsurprisingly, the producer S1 handled both tracks). The first half has Kanye spitting about harsh realities ("Murder"), and Jay ends up taking the track to a more celebratory feel ("Excellence") combined with a clarion call for more people to join him. The penultimate track is truly awful "Made in America" with a horribly cloying chorus from Frank Ocean: it's as if the school bully dunked "Forever Young" into the toilets and pulled the flush. Thanks also to the flaccid beat, potentially engaging lyrics are undermined. The album closer is the barnstorming "Why I Love You" where beat, concept, lyrics and chorus all work together to produce a fun slant on the typical "hater" track. And that's that, unless you include the Deluxe Version's 4 cuts – most are probably divisive, but "The Joy" can certainly be subbed in for some of the weaker main efforts.

Once you've listened to "Watch the Throne" a few times, it starts to truly sink in. As it does, you start to see the wood for the trees, and there are various issues afflicting it. The sequencing doesn't help, as things just don't flow together all that well. But whilst there are definite standout tracks, there are also letdowns. It's all pretty specific: "Lift Off" and "Niggas In Paris" are decent, but in the 2 and 3 positions should have been stronger (the former could have been if they had just used the alternative beat). Perhaps "That's My Bitch" is more subjective, but "Made In America" is an undoubted clunker that, I'm sure, most hip hop fans will delete from their playlist quick sharp. The couple of dubstep tracks may well alienate more straightforward rap fans, too. So it seems that half of the album is impressive, a quarter just isn't good enough, and the rest is truly debatable. Does that match the incredible amount of hype it has commanded? Or, at the very least, give it a pass due to being "historic" and so on? Well, although it improved, the first couple of listens just kept making me think about the recent Bad Meets Evil EP from Eminem and Royce. There are subtle differences. You see, Eminem and Royce da 5'9" sounded like old FRIENDS rapping for fun in completely harmony; Jay-Z and Kanye West sound like a couple of guys that have been COLLEAGUES for a decade. Back in January, I wrote something in preparation for "Watch the Throne" and luckily, the end result has come out better than hoped – but maybe that's because my expectations had been relatively low. It never sounds forced, but it does seem restrained at times. Moreover, there isn't a real feeling of playing for the same side, of overwhelming team spirit (compare that with Damian Marley and Nas on their completely harmonious "Distant Relatives" last year).

Whilst at times, you feel a part of the party, more often than not, you're excluded from Jay and Kanye's VIP area. They rap about such opulent things, with Carter declaring that he's forgotten what a miniscule $50,000 feels like. Talk of models, sex with models, Beyonce's breasts, expensive watches, cars, not to mention sampling Otis Redding (which probably cost the size of the GDP of a small country)… It all just gets a bit much and could have really affected the album, if it weren't for the sense of humour the two rappers frequently display. It's also good to see the two unafraid to go in over more experimental beats, plus they both deliver solid lyrics throughout (even if they rarely get exhilarating). The best moments (aside from "Otis" which couldn't fail) are when Jay and 'Ye are spitting about genuinely personal things, being a bit goofy, or about societal subject matter around them ("No Church…" and "…Jungle"), not just money and power. It's certainly an enjoyable listen, with a few great songs – and at least it actually happened – but with the combined power, money and talent that Carter and West continually brag about, you can't help but feel that "Watch the Throne" could and should have been better.

LMAO 8.5 from those nerds of Pitchfork.com

Watch the Throne features the following things: absurdly expensive samples, a pair of choruses from Odd Future R&B singer Frank Ocean at the exact moment where he's turning the corner and becoming a Thing, another chorus from long-been-a-Thing Beyoncé, a buddy-buddy shoutout to the President of the United States, multiple namechecks of brands so expensive that you've probably never heard of half of them, a murderers' row of producers working on almost every track, and a fleeting moment where Bon Iver's Justin Vernon sounds like the funkiest man alive. And yet for Jay-Z and Kanye West, this could actually be viewed as a relatively minor album. Amazing.

The album comes hot on the heels of career-landmark albums from both artists, but the few months they spent recording it on multiple continents were practically vacations compared to the way they usually work. Kanye's opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, still less than a year old, won across-the-board critical raves for its lush, prog-rap expansiveness; to create it, Kanye sequestered himself in Hawaii and flew in an endless stream of creative-peak collaborators. Jay, meanwhile, is still cruising on the momentum of The Blueprint 3, an artistically flat but commercially massive grab for continued relevance that did everything he wanted it to do. Watch the Throne brings little of Twisted Fantasy's boundary-melting ambition or The Blueprint 3's commercial acumen. It's just two of rap's biggest figures and best friends getting together to make some of the swollen, epic music that comes so naturally to them. Listening to it is sort of like watching George Clooney get all his movie-star friends together for a party at his Italian villa, and, along the way, maybe dream up Ocean's Twelve. (I liked Ocean's Twelve.)

In the past week, Internet sleuths have pointed out that the release of many Jay-Z albums have coincided with some national or international calamity, 9/11 not excluded. Watch the Throne is no exception: its release on the same day as yet another catastrophic stock market downturn has led some critics to conclude that the pair's boasts of obscene wealth is out of step with the times. That's a fair case to make. But one of the striking things about Watch the Throne is how often Jay and Kanye address matters beyond their bank accounts. On "Why I Love You", it's Jay's dismay at past crewmates' betrayals. On "Murder to Excellence", it's black-on-black crime and the scarcity of people of color at society's highest seats. On "Made in America", it's the hardships of youth and coming of age. "New Day" is framed as a letter to the pair's imagined sons, a device that mostly gives them a chance to soul-search and self-criticize. On "Welcome to the Jungle", Jay, never a tortured pop star, actually says, "I'm fuckin' depressed." Despite all the triumphant bravado these two bring to practically everything they do, they work overtime here to bring a sense of empathy to this enterprise. Once in a while, they even sound vaguely humble.

These subtler moments are admirable, but they don't always work. Consider, for example, the song "That's My Bitch", on which Kanye and his collaborators flip the classic "Apache" break into a devastating dance-rap monster with synths zooming off in every direction and Justin Vernon making the aforementioned sweaty soul moves. It's a vicious song, catchy as fuck, but it turns out to be weirdly awkward. Despite the title, Jay's verse is all devotional-prophet; it mostly concerns the way American beauty standards so often work against women of color. The sentiment deserves respect, but his laidback delivery, on a track with production and structure that call for ferocity, drains his ideas of force.

Watch the Throne works best when Jay and Kanye are just talking about how great they are. The single "Otis" is dizzy fun, with Jay and Kanye rapping hard and swapping mics like hungry kids. "Niggas in Paris" rides an impossibly propulsive synth riff and gigantic drums and gives Jay a chance to display the technical rap wizardry he still has in him. (It also features this great Kanye moment, "Doctors say I'm the illest because I'm suffering from realness/ Got my niggas in Paris, and they going gorillas," followed by a sample of Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory talking about how awesome shit doesn't have to mean anything.) "Gotta Have It" unites Kanye and the Neptunes to crazily chop up James Brown vocal samples and Eastern flute melodies. And "Who Gon Stop Me" finds Kanye cussing in Pig Latin while turning dubstep-rap into a viable subgenre.

If you buy Watch the Throne from iTunes-- the only place you can buy it at the moment-- you'll notice that it's credited to "JAY Z & Kanye West" (capital letters and missing hyphen unexplained). But while Jay might be billed first for seniority's sake, Kanye is this album's obvious guiding force. Throughout, he displays levels of unequaled audacity. On "Otis" and "Gotta Have It", he reduces Otis Redding and James Brown to simple grunts, then builds rhythm tracks out of them. On "New Day", over a beat co-produced by RZA, he actually runs Nina Simone through Auto-Tune. On "No Church in the Wild", he authoritatively vows, "You will not control the threesome." The musical scope of Watch the Throne is a tribute to his distinctive taste and sense of style. The whole thing sounds huge, and even the sillier moments ("Made in America", especially, reminds me of the inspirational ballads of late-period Michael Jackson) succeed on pure orchestral excess. Jay and Kanye debuted the album in a private listening session at a New York planetarium, a setting which made perfect sense: even if it never approaches the grandeur or character-study complexity of Twisted Fantasy, this is still exploding-star music.

So: two long-reigning titans make a relatively quick album which, despite their best efforts, still winds up being a monument to their own grandiosity. Should we care? Well, yeah. Kanye doesn't have a cruise-control switch, and when he's around, neither does Jay. On Watch the Throne, they push each other and have fun doing it, and the result is a stadium-sized event-rap spectacle that still sounds like two insanely talented guys' idiosyncratic vision. That's worth celebrating.

The album's hot, production is crazy, I love Who Gonna Stop Me, that dubstep beat sounds big in good headphones or in the car. I fuck with it.

Two great artists. The video to Otis made me appreciate the song much more, looks like they were both having a lot of fun.

West best production used to them sped-up samples.

Well at least him and Jay put out albums for their fans. Whilst Dr Dre...

^I don't blame them. We all saw how you old niggas bugged out when Joe said shit about Wu.

Homeboy chose to mention Meth in a contest with "rappers" like Soulja Boy and Flo Rida. Does that make sense you to you? Why would he bring up a guy who didn't even have a record out at the time? Fact is these dudes are too afraid to go at anyone who sells records. Budden saw that Meth hadn't dropped shit in years and decided to run his mouth selectively.  I guarantee you if Meth were still selling records he wouldn't have brought up his name.

Now nothing would be wrong with that if it weren't for the fact that these are the guys claiming hip hop sucks right now, no one can fuck with them, and that they are the ones bringing real music back. You know, that "real music" from the 90s that we all love, basically that music that Wu Tang and Meth were putting out. Get my point yet? But instead of pointing out the current popular rappers who "can't fuck with them" (which should be required if you're calling yourself the best in the game), Budden is bringing up names more known for their 90s work. Shit makes no sense until you realize he's just a big pussy. Notice how quickly he recanted his words once he realized that Meth still had somewhat of a fanbase.

I think dissing the same group of guys is boring. & lets say a full on Rap war broke out between BrickSquad & Slaughterhouse. There is no benefit because who are they rapping against? Being as good as they are & dissing those artists is like bragging you fucked up a ten year old Asian girl.

As for the list, he just said he was better than him. & "anyone who disagrees can battle me". Nobody even attempted lol.

& let's not act like Jay-Z isn't regarded higher than Method Man. So to the eyes of the public, him (or Slaughterhouse) dissing Jay-Z again would be even worse. Then for people my age & younger, Kanye is one of the top people in the current game. They gained so many fans with Em, why try to lose them?

If they truly feel hip hop is dead and its because of certain artists then they should be going at those targets. They are simply too pussy to go at someone who is successful in the game, for fear of pissing off mainstream fans. That kills the whole idea of their whole movement of being the hottest spitters in the game who will slaughter anyone. That kills their whole fuck the mainstream for being wack movement. Wasn't that the point of calling themselves Slaughterhouse? If these guys were calling themselves "The niggas who can rap but are too pussy to slaughter anyone" then I wouldn't have an issue. Other rappers have proven themselves. Canibus went at LL Cool J. 50 went at Ja didn't he? Niggas need to change their name to Pussyhouse.

They built their whole reputation as these hot spitters who got screwed by labels and are now saying "fuck you" to mainstream hip hop. But they're just proving themselves to be whores to the industry like everyone else.

i seriously dont see the difference between niggas in paris and any average rapper of today. weak ass bars that people love just cause its jay and kanye. im a fan of both  dudes but this is by far kanyes worst album and one of jays worst. for example if gucci and waka dropped the same lame ass song, same lyrics, same beat (except for that gimmicky as break at the end, even they wouldnt do that) folks would be hating super hard.

Watch The Throne Track-By-Track Breakdown

Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam breaks down the tracks on Watch the Throne with MTV News

Watch the Throne Breakdown

"No Church in the Wild" featuring Frank Ocean (Produced by 88 Keys, Kanye West and Mike Dean)

"Collectively [working with Frank Ocean] was both of their ideas. It was like, 'Yo this guy is incredible.' They were a fan of him prior and it was like, 'Yo we should fly him to New York to come out here.' [Frank] went in and he just went to work. That kid is incredible, man. That particular record was one take. It just was like, [sings] 'What's a king to a God.' We were actually in the room like, 'Yo he f---ing nailed it.' "

"Lift Off" featuring Beyoncé (Produced by Kanye West, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean)

" 'Lift Off' was definitely one of the earlier records [recorded for the album]. [Putting the sound effects on the record] is a process because initially a record might just be a beat, a chorus and a hook and as [Kanye] hears things he adds and takes things out."

"N---as in Paris" (Produced by Hit-Boy, Kanye West and Mike Dean)

"Them guys, everything they rap about is what they actually go through. So when you hear that album it's real. When Jay says, 'I ball so hard motherf---ers wanna fine me,' they gave him a fine because he took a picture with the college players at the NCAA tournament. So he got a fine for that in real life. So when you hear it you think he's braggin', but no, it's really true."

"Otis" featuring Otis Redding (Produced by Kanye West)

"[Kanye] was late for his flight, we were in the studio working all day and he was late for his flight. As we were leaving he was like, 'Yo hold on for a second.' So he drops his bags and goes to the MPC [beat machine] and his assistant is rushing him and he's just f----ing with [the beat]. What's so crazy is the whole time he's doing that Jay is writing his verses in his head. But Jay is watching the [NBA] playoffs, I think it was the championship; Miami and Dallas. So Jay is watching the playoffs. I'm not even thinking Jay is paying attention to what 'Ye is doing and by the time he is finished it's like 'I invented swag ...' And I'm like, 'What the f--- just happened?' "

"Gotta Have It" (Produced by The Neptunes and Kanye West)

"It's like a beat battle. 'Ye might play something and then Pharrell might play something. They go back and forth man and then they come to a point where they come with one beat."

"New Day" (Produced by Kanye West, RZA and Mike Dean)

"The energy from that was just a situation when 'Ye and Jay were talking about — because both of the guys don't have kids yet. So, it was just a conversation that they were talking about just having kids and how they're gonna raise their kids because of the success that they're having now."

"That's My Bitch" (Produced by Kanye West, Q-Tip and Jeff Bhasker)

"The way Jay writes records you have to really go back and listen to 'em. The way he said 'bitch' and 'dog' and then 'get ya own' like how he used the Big Pun [flow]. So you have to really go back and listen to it three or four times to be able to say anything about a Jay-Z record. Really he's bigging up his wife through the whole verse, but if you're small minded, you won't catch that."

"Welcome to the Jungle" featuring Swizz Beatz (Produced by Swizz Beatz)

"We were at the Mercer [Hotel in New York] and Pharrell came by, Swizz came by, Rihanna came by it was like a room full of superstars. Swizz came through with [shoe designer] Christian Louboutin — the guy! It was really that guy."

"Who Gon Stop Me" (Produced by Sak Pase of the Jugganauts and Kanye West)

"Verse Simmonds actually did the chorus for 'Who Gon Stop Me.' Initially if you hear the second half of that [finished] beat." The [entire] song was [originally just] the second half. The dub step factor came later on in the process. I gotta give [Kanye] all credit for that, when he came back from Paris he was like, 'Yo I added this piece to the beat.' "

"Murder to Excellence" (Produced by Swizz Beatz and S1)

"As much as people may think that Jay talks about money and cars, he's really not that guy. Of course he has it, but his whole mission is to build. He wants to have others join him, he's trying to build black excellence, like the black youth as the next [generation of] executives."

"Made in America" featuring Frank Ocean (Produced by Sak Pase of the Jugganauts)

"That's what Frank is about if you listen to his music you can tell that he's a very smart guy. We were in the studio, Jay wasn't there, 'Ye wasn't there, it was just me and Noah — one of the engineers. [Frank Ocean] was just thinking of different concepts, he was there for like eight hours, then probably like six in the morning he was like 'Sweet baby Jesus.' "

"Why I Love You" featuring Mr Hudson (Produced by Mike Dean and Kanye West)

"There is only so much you can do for a person. Like Jay said [in the song], 'I tried to teach n---as to be kings and all they wanted to be was soldiers.' Like that's a real line, that's how he felt. [Kanye and Jay] do get a lot of criticism in their careers and how they move and I think they just wanted to express it."

So I ball so hard mothafuckas want to fine me, first niggas got to find me
What's 50 grand to a mothafucka like me, can you please remind me?
Ball so hard, this shit crazy, y'all don't know that don't shit phase me
The Nets could go 0 for 82 and I look at you like this shit gravy
Ball so hard this shit weird, we ain't even supposed to be here
Ball so hard since we here, it's only right that we'd be fair
Psycho, I'm liable to go Michael, take your pick
Jackson, Tyson, Jordan, Game 6
Ball so hard got a broke clock, Rollys that don't tick tock
Audemars that's losing time, hidden behind all these big rocks
Ball so hard I'm shocked too, I'm supposed to be locked up too
If you escape what I've escaped, you'd be in Paris getting fucked up too
Ball so hard let’s get faded, Le Meurice for like 6 days
Gold bottles, scold models, spillin’ Ace on my sick J’s
Ball so hard bitch behave, just might let you meet Ye
Chi town's D. Rose, I’m moving the Nets to BK

gucci doesn't even know where paris is

He hasn't fallen off hard he's always been killin shit and goes hard on this album. His delivery on all the tracks is dope and i think he outshines kanye. As for the beats, u trippin man its fukn 2011 and these beats are fukin sick they go hard if ur in a car with a proper system.

There's only a handful of rappers who when they put out an album it sounds like a real work of art, basically a "masterpiece" type of deal n 2 of them are on this album so fukn get high n enjoy that shit.

The production on this is top-notch, for the most part.  Love the vibe on the first track and sets the stage for the album.  I could have done w/o the Beyonce track as well as the Swizz Beats? track.  Overall, I was surprised by this album.  I think if this was a solo project from Kanye, he would have been more focused on his rhymes.  Jay is an old head but he can flow on some of the tracks still.

im actually surprised that a neptunes track is one of my favs on the album. dem niggas havent made a decent beat since the early 2000's.

its a good album, but i just feel that there are like 3-4 tracks that could have been left off.

I debating to give every song a 5/5.

too bad that your opinion doesn't hold any weight.

Maybe if you didn't live in the middle of Russian you'd realize in society, nobody's opinion really means anything. Your previous statement is highly contradicting.

How so?

Because everyone has an opinion & most of the time they all differ. Therefore, you say my opinion holds no weight, but really nobody's opinion holds any weight because opinion isn't fact.

Example, you think Soccer is the best sport. That's your opinion. I don't agree, therefore your opinion hold no weight. & vice versa when you look at me & I say Baseball is the best.

Don't know why so many people think this album is great.  If your complaining about Game's sequencing this is just as bad or worse.  This is prolly the most accurate review (3.5/5)... hiphopsite.com

"When Jay-Z released The Dynasty LP in 2000, his team consisted of Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, and Amil. At the time, the LP seemed like it would be an automatic disappointment, as not only did Jay have to share the mic with his crew, but he also didn’t spend any money on production. Who were these guys, Kanye West and Just Blaze, that produced the majority of the LP, we all thought to ourselves. The joke was on us though, as The Dynasty was satisfyingly solid, easily proving the worth of Kanye and Just as producers, leading to their current status as some of the most respected in the game. How times have changed.

But while we went in with low expectations for The Dynasty eleven years ago, expectations couldn’t be higher for Watch The Throne, the first collaborative LP from Jay-Z and Kanye West. It began during the Good Fridays campaign for Ye’s MBDTF, which spawned a gorgeous track called “The Joy”. The track found Jay and Yeezy back-to-back over the mellowest of Curtis Mayfield breaks, produced by none other than Pete Rock. They followed up with “H.A.M.”, an operatic Lex Lugar produced track that didn’t go over quite as well. But they quickly redeemed themselves with “Otis”, which came off similar in fashion to “The Joy”, but utilizing a more abrasive, chopped up Otis Redding sample. The response to this track quickly erased any leftover bacon taste from the previous single, and sent expectations through the roof.

But when the bar is set that high, only greatness will be accepted, which is why Watch The Throne is ultimately a let down.

With no clear direction, the album is a collage of different sounds and styles, some of which will delight, others that will disappoint. The album begins with two better-than-average tracks, the brooding “No Church In The Wild” and the Beyonce firestarter “Lift Off”. But while both are good, they fail to really set the album off. The clinky, paired-down “N***as In Paris” follows, setting a poor tone for the album. Luckily, “Otis” comes in and sets things straight.

The Neptunes produced, James Brown sampled “Gotta Have It” also gets things back on track, but there really isn’t an attention grabbing moment until The RZA helmed “New Day” kicks in. Jay and Kanye introspectively look at the faces of the future sons’, creating an honest, somber look beyond the duo’s stone exteriors. “Murder To Excellence” also is refreshing, examining race in America; a topic not touched upon by these two very often. The dubstep infused, Flux Pavillion produced “Who Gon Stop Me” knocks, but is strange bedfellows next to the album’s rawer, sample based beats. The album’s closer, “Why I Love You” finds Jay firing shots indirectly at past friends, harking back to that Dynasty era.

While the production may be uneven, there are still tons of quotable moments from both Jay and Kanye on this LP. Don’t get us wrong, each of these songs may have their own merits out of context, but have a hard time fitting together as a whole. All in all, Watch The Throne is still a good album. But when dealing with two gentlemen that have such a long-standing reputation for greatness, “good” simply isn’t good enough."

Not sure which album is better yet. R.E.D. has my favorite songs, but also the worst songs. It's way more of a mixed bag while Watch the Throne is more consistent, but consistently average. Neither one is that great.

Perhaps. But that's where a majority of the hate is coming from. People just don't wanna hear how well Jay & Kanye did.

For example, look at the RED album. People actually broke down the album. Beats were weaker than albums past. The second half of the album fell off. Game was really poor lyrically, etc, etc. But for this album? No serious breakdown. Just "lol @ album of the year...it's alright". Mostly due to the fact there isn't really anything to knock them for on this album.

there is no cohesive sound to the album, its simply a collection of songs. some of the lyrics on there are whack lets not lie about it. niggas in paris is dumb as hell, the beat is awful. the sweet baby jesus song was fucking awful. its a good album but lets not pretend is some amazing thing and kanye  & jay are doing so well. thats buying into the hype. the whole theme is that they are on top "look at how amazing we are". no-one really thinks "hmmm im gonna deny how well they did", i mean really, most of the people i know who are disappointed with this album are big fans of jay and kanye (like me) . its a a good album a best, and average for kanye.

Well,  I think the production is solid, for the most part.  Their lyrics are non-existent.  Like Screwface said, it's mostly bragging.  The album did not flow properly.  Aside from 1 or 2 songs, I find myself thinking that it all blends together.  These guys claim, and a lot of people believe it, that they are the best.  Well, if this album is supposed to solidify that, they failed.  I'm not saying that the album is terrible, because I think it's a solid effort, but I expected a lot more.

Its a very good mainstream album. A lot of hate on here for it but it DOES have replay value and Kanye and Jay both do okay lyrically. Neither have their finest moments but the songs and the album as a whole is a very good pop rap album and a lot of the beats are good quality. Not as good as MBDTF, but better than Blueprint III, imo.

I can understand why people think its wack, thats fine, but for THAT reason? A lot of classic hip-hop songs and albums have been basically people talking about how awesome they are. Not really grounds for criticism in this genre considering braggadocio is what the lyrical game is practically built on.

It's Jay & Kanye, you have to understand people just naturally don't like them. A lot of people, when speaking on this album say they are both "mediocre" lyrically, like they've been lyrical monsters their entire career.

Kanye's always been about his vibe; he brought that to this album. Jay rides overs beats; he did that. They did what they've been up to both of their careers, the difference is they made an album which implies they are the best.

Kanye's last solo album got some love here & he had songs like "Power", "So Appalled" & "Monster", "Dark Fantasy" & "Hell of a Life". I mean, you can say these songs are better for whatever reason, production, hooks, whatever. But you can't say he's "great" lyrically or shows great variety in content, when these songs I just named are all about him being the shit.

People just need to admit they don't like the two of them being the face of rap or whatever it is that bothers them. But there is clearly some personal bias against the two of them.

I like both artists doesn't change the fact they both phoned this album in. Sounds like a bunch of directionless leftovers and scraps that weren't good enough for either of their albums. Kanye isn't lyrical but he's witty and has charisma. On this album I can't even recall a single line from him that's how meh he came on it. Jay sounded bored on most songs. This album could have been great but it's not. Six months from now this album will be forgotten and it won't any year end lists other then most dissapointing

Why can't it be people are just not feeling the album? Why does there have to be a motive? I judge albums as they are, albums. Not what you did 15 years ago or what you plan on doing after this one. And at the moment for me this album is ehh. Nothing bad nothing spectacular lyrically, but nice beats.

But yours is a theory on me. Mine is basically true, nobody just wants to admit to a biased opinion.

Like I said, look at the critiques. "Not very lyrical". They've never been lyrical. Not to mention a few people in this thread have mentioned it: "Who wants to listen to them brag about they're the shit for an hour?". I mean that's probably everyone's thought right there.

The Cole reference makes no sense. Because he had expectations to live up to & then put out an album worse than his first street album.

And why would J.Cole have higher expectations than the two biggest rappers in the game? Two rappers who put out a collab album worse than their last two solos. Cole World >>> Watch the Throne.

Just realized the same analogy can be used for you and J. Cole

I mean that's probably everyone's thought right there.

lol, I mean I like J. Cole. So clearly, it's pretty easy to just say you like somebody. I liked Cole's "Warm Up". He just hasn't progressed from it. He's actually gotten worse & you guys are acting like he's showing signs of getting better. I just think that's foolish. That's basically all I wanted to point out. Is that this is likely the best he'll ever be & it's nothing all that special. I mean, don't you agree? Doesn't everybody here agree that this album isn't going down as anything all-time?

& what a stupid question lol. I mean, when Jordan came back on the Wizards, did he have higher expectations than Kobe? No. People were just like, "oh, dope. MJ is back". But Kobe had to prove he was ready to take over. Cole clearly has higher expectations. Two great rappers, falling out of their prime don't really have standards. Cole, "the golden child", "next in line", etc, etc., who ironically enough is signed with the other two & is suppose to put out an album that at least matches some of their work. Sure, you can say it's better than "Watch The Throne". But "Cole World" isn't in the same sport (let alone league), as any of the great albums Jay or Kanye have been known for.

It's hard for anyone to believe you're a J. Cole fan. Look at your first posts in the J. Cole thread, you were shitting on him before you'd even checked out his debut album. It's not like he has enough material for you to like him and then decide he's fallen off.

J. Cole isn't Kobe. I don't know where you got the expectation for him to be the next Jay-Z. And while its arguable that Jay-Z has fallen off, Kanye certainly hasn't. His last solo was imo his second best album, and if you look at reviews from critics its his best received. Two of the best the mainstream has to offer drop a collab album and you have less expectations than from a newcomer with 2 mixtapes?

I feel like you've created these own expectations in your head so you're basically arguing with yourself. No one has said the album is a classic or that J. Cole is G.O.A.T. material. You just need to see him as a promising new rapper like the rest of us. You said this yourself:

"People just need to admit they don't like the two of them being the face of rap or whatever it is that bothers them. But there is clearly some personal bias against the two of them."

Replace Jay-z and Kanye with J. Cole and the exact same argument rings true. Except J. Cole is a newcomer and not the face of rap.
