Title: Xzibit named his new album "Restless 2".
Post by: LostAngel on July 23, 2011, 12:41:29 PM
After I saw this I started to think. Does it earn it's name? I mean, everybody here got to agree that "Restless" was straight West Coast classic, but after that he really fell of. So now he took more time to make another one (Restless 2), better production, guest appearances and shit like that. What do ya'll think, will it be another classic or it's just waist of time? From what I've heard, he's been working with Dre, Battlecat, Fredwreck, Jelly Roll (-.-') DJ Khalil and 21TheProducer. After that "Phenom" single I tought he's hungry, and to be honest after I heard "HFOU" with Trick Trick I was like whoa, that's some "40 Dayz, 40 Nightz" shit. I really can't wait to see what he's cookin'.

Source?? Lately rappers have been making sequels to their classic albums from back in the day. To me Restless was a personal favorite, a west coast classic. I hope in some ways it actually does sound like Restless but more updated. I have faith in X, the past couple of years dude has been dropping bombs.

Xzibit needs to stop playing and get back with strong arm steady, they all need each other...

I'm sure there'll be someone to disagree but to me it's the Dr Dre / Xzibit connection that made "Restless" the West Coast classic that it is. So if there's ever going to be a Vol.2, then it has to be with Dr Dre overseeing the whole thing, like executive producer and/ or mixing the entire album (like he did with "Tha Last Meal" making it special as well). Obviously, the other producers & features have to fit too! With them 2 elements combined & a hungry X... everything's possible!

@xzibit XZIBIT
MMX (2010) was the tent. title of the new album. Of course that wont work now, so I decided the body of work has earned the title:#RESTLESS2

My favorite West Coast artist. 8)

It's about time we get an album from him. Not a fan of the title though. Brings too much hype to it that I don't think X can live up to in 2011.

for those who were around at the time, "Restless" was actually considered a disappointment when it first dropped...i personally thought it was the shit, but i remember most peeps around here were expecting another "2001" and thought "Restless" was too watered down. I bet those same peeps appreciate the shit out of it by now.

Well if this really is going to be a follow up to Restless then the production better be up to par. Fredwreck can certainly deliver for a fact and Jelly Roll is either a hit or a miss in my opinion. Battlecat hasnt had a good beat since Dog Pound Cali Iz Activ. But I wouldnt be surprised if he ends up getting a beat or two from Dre.

come on dawg, everyone was appreciating it.  I mean, your always gonna have haters no matter what, there were probably cats that even hated on Dre when the Chronic came out, or on Snoop when Doggystyle came out.

But aside from those negetive fucks that always find a reason to hate; I think everyone was pleased with Restless then and now.  And Xzibit had the sales to back it up.

Yeah some people wanted to act like diehards and win fan of the year awards so they said they liked at the speed of light better or 40 days and 40 nights better... but the overwhelming reception was that X had finally reached superstar status and became a true west coast heavywieght double platinum artist.

I'm excited about the new album and I hope he comes thru because X is in my top 5 all time, along with Pac, Nas, Em and Snoop.

"Thank You" was a spectacular track that brought tears to my eyes, it was like a modern day Papparazi and proved X still has something left in "the basement" to take a quote from Rocky Balboa.

Me and Jaydc always say this and it's the truth.

There are 2 types of Xzibit fans, those before Restless and after Restless dropped. X's first 2 albums 1 is IMO a classic (40 Dayz) and his debut borderline, so for me I never really felt X "needed" Dr. Dre it was more of a added bonus and it would get him heard on a bigger stage. Restless to me is X's All Eyez On Me album. Dope production and guests, lyrics, etc. I always give a slight edge to X on 40 Dayz over Restless from a lyrical standpint, beats Restless. But people that were up on Xzibit before Restless knew this guy had it when he was with Tha Alkaholiks.

BTW that is the one name I hope to see on Restless 2, E-Swift doing beats and Tha Liks guest appearing. People sleep on the Likwit Crew and the impact they had on X's career.

I have to admit I became an X fan after hearing Bitch Please and then hearing him on 2001 and Restless. I slept on his first 2 but went back and listened to them and was impressed at his lyricism. Production wise Restless is his best album but ironically my favorite beat from it "Get Your Walk On" was not a Dre track.

All good whenever anyone started to listen to X. I just think his first 2 albums get lost in the shuffle when people start talking about best Xzibit albums.

And I am more inclined to go with minus a couple duds on his albums after Restless, Xzibit has a pretty solid catalog of music.

See for me I never seen that as a hinderance. Same with Ice Cube. I'm sure it was probably difficult for him to try and go from having musical direction from a Dr Dre to basically putting together a entire album on his own. And to be honest, really other than Full Circle, X had that from somebody. Whether it be E-Swift, Sir Jinx, Dre or more recently Jelly Roll. Those are 4 or 5 vastly different producers that all bring something different to the table.

Wow, I didn't knew there's still so much love for tha X man. Well, I'm a fan since "Paparazzi" came out, and I gotta tell, X really was hard back then. Like someone here said, he didn't need Dre, but Dre just helped him in some point of view. Someone will say he sold his ass up on that album, but man had talent, had potencial, that's why Dre wanted to work with him and to help him. X is still beast, but people don't reconize that, I saw bunch of times when someone make a thread about him there's 2-3 replys and that's all. Like ya'll only like Game because he's throwin' W with his hand. Just try to remember 2000-2003, X had it. X was like Dre and Snoop back then. That was his biggest time there. Even 50 told his name on that "In Da Club" song, but thats not why I write this. About Dre production? Yea, his official DJ told me that, and when I asked about Snoop on that album, he said they'll talk with him, but they already made one song for the album. MC Eiht is on there, Kurupt, Snoop, Butch Cassidy, T.I. made a verse for one song before he went to prison, Game, Slim The Mobsta, Jay Rock. So we'll see. First single of it is "Napalm" produced by 1500 or Nothing, they've made video for it, and with album comes a DVD Documentary called "Comin' home". So I really lookin' forward to it.

I think Restless is precisely when Xzibit's career started to go in the wrong direction.  He was awesome on Bitch Please, and Dre knew it, so wanted to do a whole album with him.  But Dre's approach to music just didn't fit Xzibit's style.  Dre is into very structured, clean, almost danceable music, whereas Xzibit was more raw, aggressive, and unpredictable.  The attempt to add structure and, in effect, streamline Xzibit's style for mainstream consumption (which is what Restless was -- an attempt to garner Xzibit a wider audience through a style more palatable to the masses) undid what made Xzibit so unique and captivating on his first two albums.  In that way, Xzibit was never the same after Restless.  All in all, I'm of two minds on Restless -- it's fine as a big budget Westcoast album from that time period, but purely as an Xzibit album, it's not too good.  And if he's trying to go back to that with Restless 2, I think he's misguided.  He needs to go back to what he was like prior to Restless.

I agree 100%. Unless Dre is involved, it's gonna be impossible to be a truly Restless Pt 2. So really all he can do is emulate the production, guests, vibe, etc. Either way I will check it out because he is one of my all time favorites.

Restless is a higher quality album than Xzibit's first two.  From production, to guest appearances, it's a fully realized album from top to bottom.   You don't have to down Xzibit's Restless LP just to big up his first two albums.   I love Xzibit's first two albums, they are two of my favorites of all time to me and also hold a lot of sentimental value, but I am rational enough to admit the obvious that Restless LP was his best album.

For me, I do have to admit that At The Speed of Life did fall under the radar for me when it first came out.  All I remember was reading about it in the Source, and about Xzibit being an upcoming artist.  I thought it looked dope but I was only 14, and since they weren't playing it on the radio and there was no video, and there was no Death Row affiliates on the album.. it was likely to fall under my radar.

Then when 40 Days and 40 Nights came out some of you might remember the video for "What U See Is What U Get" was #1 on BET Rap City for nearly the entire summer of 1998.  Shows how much BET fell the fuck off after they sold their company to Jews at Viacom (same company that owns BET) the next year.   But I was feeling the video, and I noticed King Tee in the video since by that time King Tee was down with Dre and Aftermath, and I was starting to feel like Xzibit might be a big artist.  But still, the album fell just barely below the radar for me.

Then, finally, right around the time No LImit Top Dogg came out in early 99, I saw Xzibit on BET's late night news show announcing that his next album was going to be executive produced by Dr. Dre.  It was hard to believe because I knew he was signed to Loud Records and that he wasn't on Aftermath.  But just hearing this news, made me rush out and buy 40 Days 40 Nightz.  I was especially interested in track 13 "Welcome To LA" since it was produced by Mel Man and it really had that Aftermath Sound to it.  That track was really a preview for me of what a Dre executive produced album might sound like.  The rest of the album sounded a little too raw for me, but I still liked it marginally.

Then by the summer of 2000 after hearing X on Dre's album I was an all out Xzibit fan.  By that time I was heavily anticipating his album, and so I was bumping 40 Days and 40 Nights nearly every day.  "Focus" was one of my favorite joints and with "3 Card Molly" I was getting into Ras Kas and other Xzibit family/affiliates.  Then I finally bought At The Speed of Light and I was really blown away by how deep that album was.  Xzibit really put his heart into that album and being 18 years old just moving out on my own for the first time I really connected with that album, because it was the snapshot of a young artist just breaking out on his own and trying to find success on his own terms in a dangerous world full of possibilities.

So you don't think it's a fuckin joke that a company named BLACK Entertainment Television sold themselves over to a Jewish company but still kept the same name?   Do you think if their was a television station named JEWISH Entertainment Television that it would be owned by Arabs?  Would that make sense to you.  I'm not even saying anything against Jews here, I'm just simply saying you don't name a company BLACK Entertainment Television unless you are actually black owned and operated.

Too watered down? Stop smoking crack, 2001 is wayyy more watered down than any X album.

LMAO. "2001" changed the sound of west coast rap, buddy...get off the pipe.

Yes, it did. One of my favorite albums. Doesn't change the fact its watered down to appeal to the mainstream with simple, hard-hitting beats and lyrics far simpler (aka watered down) than an Xzibit album. How many songs on 2001 had meaningful lyrics compared to Restless?

Yeah, Restless definitely had more meaningful lyrics, I'll give you that.  But if Restless had sold 7 Million and Dre's 2001 had sold 1 Million, then you would probably be doing the opposite right now and dissing the Restless LP and promoting Dre's 2001 album.  Saying something like, "Restless LP may have had more meaningful lyrics, but Dre's 2001 had flawless production and every track was a banger"

I bet those same peeps appreciate the shit out of it by now.

come on dawg, everyone was appreciating it.

VVVVV

I would give it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5. I honestly do't think Dre and X make a good combo. He should stick to his "Speed of Life" formula.

Who found Xzibits album Restless a bit of a dissapointment.
Its not as good as At the speeed of life or 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz.

xzibit's first 2 albums are classsics and RESTLESS is a piece of shit!

7/10 beacuse the album have some wack songs in the end of the cd like: dont approach me, best of things and loud&clear

Now as for the "Aftermath Affiliated" Xzibit, well he's done some so so collabs and dropped 2 poor albums....(although i don't mind "Man v Machine" not a bad album)

This new Xzibit will never be missed

"Throws a half eaten Mars Bar onto the ground"

His first 2 albums are classics....most of the people like the 2 last albums cuz are more commercial.

No doubt homie, I'll miss that old Xzibit/Likwit vibe!!

Anyone who thinks X'z first album sucked probably think Ja Rule & Nelly are good emcee's & that Snoop is better than ever (yes including better than 1992-1995 period!).

The real hip hop fans know which albums are better

At The Speed Of Life is one of my favorite albums ever. Lyrics, content, hard hitting hip hop beats man this album rocks.
40 Days was very good, not as good as the first but more west coast orientated
Restless was good a dissapointment

X has dropped 2 near classics during his likwit period.
X has dropped 2 disappointments/average albums since hooking up with dre.

Im with you too. At the speed of life was amazing. One of the best cds i own. Its hard to believe this is the same xzibit thats rapping about "choke me spank me pull my hair".

see, man, i remember it like it was yesterday....no way "restless" got the reception a typical classic gets. a whole lot of Likwit/Xzibit fans were disappointed, and many peeps felt he fell off. I personally saw it's worth, but i still remember when it came out, many other peeps didn't...

not really..."2001" had an innovative gangsta sound. "Restless" went for the same exact sound, but obviously wasn't as original, as "2001" was its predecessor. "Restless" tried to appeal commercially in every aspect that "2001" did... compare "Restless" to Xzibit's previous work, then compare "2001" to Dre's previous work, and try tellin me that "2001" is more watered down. LOL

Yea...I think his first 3 albums are all classics, but I'd put "At the Speed of Life" at the top of the list, though. "Restless" was produced better, but as others said, Xzibit's style was always known to be more raw and less clean-cut, and when he got with Dre, he sorta lost that aspect to his music. I can see why the hardcore Xzibit/Likwit fans were initially disappointed with "Restless", because it didn't sound like the traditional Xzibit...but by now, I'm sure they all realize how great "Restless" really was. Especially after hearin his recent efforts.

for those who were around at the time, "Restless" was actually considered a disappointment when it first dropped...i personally thought it was the shit, but i remember most peeps around here were expecting another "2001" and thought "Restless" was too watered down.

I dunno about that...they were both "gangsta" themed albums with a couple deep tracks. Don't forget, Dre had "The Message", which was probably deeper than any track on "Restless". Overall, I think both albums went for the exact same sound, as Dre exec produced both of 'em.

I bet those same peeps appreciate the shit out of it by now.

come on dawg, everyone was appreciating it.

Its still more watered-down than Restless.

Not quite sure who the downing Restless comment was for but if it was for me, you're wrong lol. I love that album, all I am saying is that, and it is true, there is a large group of people that almost act like Restless is his debut. He had 2 incredible albums before then that some overlook. Definitely Restless is more polished and his best album beats and guest wise. Lyrically I always go back and forth with it and 40 Dayz and most of the time I give the edge to 40 Dayz.

Yeah, but I don't think Xzibit will lose sleep over some haters on message forums from when Restless first dropped... because the album sold like 200,000 in the first week and went on to go platinum.  That has to be any rappers dream to have a platinum album executive produced by Dr. Dre.   So I think Xzibit got what he deserved off that record, and probably looks back on it as the crowning achievement of his career.

Yes, the verses Em wrote for Dre were pretty good. The shit Hittman wrote for him was average at best and at times straight mediocre. Kurupt came wack on 2001. Dre came wack on part of the tracks. Snoop came as Snoop (meaning mediocre) and Hittman was pretty weak as well. Ms Toi was trash. LA Niggaz is your example of  I can't think of a song on Restless where X came weak. 2001 is one of my favorite albums. I like it a lot more than Restless. but even I can say it is lyrically inferior without a doubt. The sound made that album entirely. You comparing the lyrics on 2001 to any X album is straight up disrespectful

The reason "Restless" was watered down was because Xzibit tried to capture the new Aftermath sound with it for commercial appeal (which he did successfully), as opposed to sticking to his roots and going with his OG formula...I don't think ANYONE called "2001" watered down when it came out, lmao. it was something we haven't heard, and you probably only think it's watered down because of how played out it has gotten by now...and not only has the album been played to death, the sound that the album created got played out as well. Everyone from Scott Storch to Fredwreck was tryna recreate Dre's new sound after "2001" came out...but when it was first released, u would have gotten laughed at for claimin it was watered down.

You comparing the lyrics on 2001 to any X album is straight up disrespectful

sorry, i strongly disagree...i believe "2001" was perfectly written for what it was, and all the artists played their part very well. nothing about "2001" was whack. Xzibit on "Restless" is nowhere near his lyrical prime. either way, my argument wasn't which album was more lyrical, it was which album was more watered down, and considering "Restless" was tryna DUPLICATE the innovative "2001" sound, I think it's obvious that "Restless" is more watered down than "2001"...i mean, in my opinion neither album is really watered down when it comes down to it, but many hardcore Xzibit fans who fell in love with his raw, underground sound definitely felt that "Restless" was watered down when it first dropped. NOBODY felt "2001" was watered down when it first dropped...feel what im sayin?

the first 2 Xzibit-albums and "man vs machine" were classic, the other albums r mediocre/lukewarm

Damn "Man Vs Machine" was a major let down for me, sounded uninspired and the Jelly Roll tracks really brought it down I reckon. I always thought "Weapons Of Mass Destruction" was ill as well. I'm anticipating some new X, it's been a long time

Man vs. Machine had a big first week and I think it may have sold okay.  Did it end up platinum?  I know it at least went gold.  It certainly had it's bangers like "Symphony In X Minor" and "Say My Name" was a monster track; it also had a lot of solid cuts like "Heart of Man" and so on.  But too many filler, some of the tracks were totally aweful and unlistenable, while on Restless LP you can listen through the whole album without skipping a track.

for those who were around at the time, "Restless" was actually considered a disappointment when it first dropped...i personally thought it was the shit, but i remember most peeps around here were expecting another "2001" and thought "Restless" was too watered down.

Its still more watered-down than Restless.

not really..."2001" had an innovative gangsta sound. LOL

Restless was watered down compared X's prev work. But its far ahead of 2001 when it comes to content. Dre has always been watered down. And you were comparing it to 2001 when you said people thought it was watered down. Yeah 2001 had "The Message" but that was the only meaningful song on there. And lyrically I don't think there's any question. Even on his singles X was bringing heat, meanwhile Kurupt was sleepwalking through his features and rhyming bitch together 10 times. Really the only impressive rhyming on 2001 came from Eminem and Xzibit, and Em was on two songs.

LOL...as if "Restless" was some deep album. it was the exact same content as "2001"... EXACT. lyrically, Xzibit took a step back from his previous efforts, while taking a step forth in production. you say Eminem and Xzibit are the only ones who came nice on "2001"? LOL...Dre's shit was written by top notch lyricists, from Eminem, to DOC, to Hittman (who also came very nice throughout the whole album). Please explain to me how a more lyrical album is watered down? I don't get your point at all.

How is this not watered down?

Fuck a bitch; don't tease bitch, strip tease bitch
Eat a bowl of these bitch, gobble the dick
Hoes forgot to eat a dick can shut the fuck up!
Gobble and swallow a nut up, shut up and get my cash

If you had said Restless was watered down compared to X's previous albums, I would've seen your point. But you compared it to 2001, and its pretty obvious out of those two which is more watered down. For the record 2001 got a ton of bad criticism about the watered down cliche gangsta lyrics.

i guess u dont know the definition of watered down...an ORIGINAL and INNOVATIVE album cannot be watered down. before "2001", there was no album like that. in the opinion of some hardcore likwit fans, "Restless" was watered down to sound like "2001". what dont u get about this? lyrical content is not what determines whether an album is watered down, it's the overall sound.

I think it only went Gold. Yeah definitely too much filler on there, they should have taken a bit more time with that album

I have very little to say.

Lyrically: 40 Dayz & Speed of Light >>>>>>> Restless
Sonically: Restless >>>>>>> Any Xzibit album

"Restless" is a dope west coast album of its time that helps represent the golden generation. It really depends what u like more, beats or lyrics and concepts.

I love all 3 albums

Can't wait for some new X

Yeah, no doubt.  Xzibit should of just pushed it back till later that year.  I mean he even had that DJ Premier cut "What A Mess" that ended up on the bonus disc.  I'm sure he had some other shit in the can, and maybe the label could of bought a few decent records from outside.  Like maybe Ras Kass had a hot joint somewhere that wasn't gonna be used for an album, Xzibit cut of cut a fresh 16 on it and called it a day.  Something like that.  The album had great potential, it's too bad they rushed it.

I love all three albums as well.   Some days I even feel like At The Speed Of Life was his greatest album, because in some ways that album has a lot of sentimental value.   But objectively speaking I think you have to say that he got a little better all around with each album, and that Restless was the climax of his career, and that Man Vs. Machine began his downfall.

i still think it was a good album, overall...not classic like his first three, but it still gets bumped.
