Sporadic rioting, looting and arson attacks broke out across the length and breadth of London yesterday as the orgy of violence which began in Tottenham at the weekend showed no sign of abating.
From Hackney to Croydon, gangs of teenagers fought running battles with police, making roadblocks from burning cars and ransacking shops.
Police in Birmingham also established an exclusion zone as large crowds gathered and shop windows were smashed.
HACKNEY
Masked rioters on BMX bicycles armed with batons attacked a crowded London bus during the evening rush-hour last night, chasing terrified commuters as they tried to escape.
The thugs, some as young as eight, forced the driver to stop the double-decker by pelting it with champagne bottles stolen from a nearby Tesco.
About 40 passengers – some carrying screaming toddlers – burst out of the exits and sprinted away.
Several commuters fell to the ground during the stampede as about 20 black men wearing balaclavas and riding BMXs chased them.
As they ran, one woman screamed: 'They are threatening us with big sticks. We have to run for our lives.
'What have we done to them? We are innocent people just trying to get home.'
Elsewhere rioters were said to be targeting white people.
Mounted police formed a line as rioters set fire to four cars outside Pembury estate.
But as night struck the police line backed off and the streets became lawless.

Kara Mahoney said gangs were targeting white people to rob them.
She said: 'About five white people just got beaten and robbed.
'There is a group of them. They hit a photographer and stole her cameras. She had blood gushing down her nose.'
Earlier gangs attacked cyclists and motorcyclists, pushing them over as they tried to get home.
And a thug used an axe to break into a Tesco supermarket. More than 30 gang members then streamed in, stealing bottles of alcohol which they used as missiles in later attacks.
At one point, child rioters tried to hijack a bus so they could drive it at police.
The attackers were mostly black youths, but they were joined by white men, women and children.
Thugs were also seen leaving a JD Sports store carrying tracksuits and trainers.
Last night, it was claimed communities were now turning on each other as they watched their livelihoods go up in flames.
One eye witness in Hackney saw a group of 100 Turkish Kurdish men chasing another group with sticks and bottles after their shops were looted.
The area has a large Turkish community, which normally coexists peacefully with people of other ethnic groups.
CLAPHAM
A 200-strong teenage mob tore apart stores along the main shopping street in Clapham, south-west London.
Thugs smashed their way into a branch of Ladbrokes and tried to tear a plasma TV screen off a wall in Lavender Hill.

Eyewitnesses said few shop windows were left unbroken in surrounding streets as thieves systematically stripped shelves.
Among the targets were branches of JD Sports, Debenhams and FootLocker as well as Wimpy and a hairdresser.
Mobile phone shops, including Phones4U, O2 and T-Mobile were singled out and gangs brazenly shared their loot in the street outside.
One bystander said: 'I saw a middle-aged woman walking away with five bags from Debenhams. People are helping themselves to carrier bags.
'Another woman was calmly flicking through earrings. There is not a single police officer here.
'It is mostly young men wearing masks, but there are children as young as ten and hundreds of onlookers. It is like a war zone.'
Crowds of young people streamed away from Clapham with their arms full of shoes, designer clothes and electronic goods, leaving discarded goods on the ground.
Nervous shop owners huddled in the doorways of some businesses in a bid to protect their livelihoods.
The violence started in Clapham Junction just after 9pm, when youths ransacked a Curry's electronic shop in Northcote Road.
Riot police left the scene after they came under light bombardment from projectiles
More youths, many with black hoods and scarves, then joined the scene.
Onlookers identified many of those present as 'blues, yellows and reds' - members of local gangs.
Along Northcote Road the windows of stores including Starbucks were smashed.
The gangs ran along the road and at one point a middle-aged man and his wife pointed in the direction of a jewellers further up the road and other potential targets.
Less than 30 metres away dozens of revellers stood outside a local pub drinking beer and looking on.
In Clapham Junction police were telling residents to evacuate after a fancy dress shop and flats above it were set on fire.
The blaze on Lavender Hill sent plumes of smoke up into the air.
Earlier looters had been taking masks from the store to hide their identity.
CROYDON
Fire destroyed a landmark furniture store last night during violent clashes between masked youths and police.
Black smoke could be seen across South London as House of Reeves, on Reeves Corner, was razed.
Police at the scene of the Croydon disturbances were investigating a 'non-fatal' shooting, after a 26-year old man was found in a car with gun shot wounds in Warrington Road, at 9.15pm.
He was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Two other people, believed to be in their late twenties, were also at the scene. They were arrested for handling stolen goods and taken to a south London police station. Detectives from Trident are investigating.
Residents compared the scene in Croydon to the blitz as a double-decker bus and several cars were also torched.
Gangs of youths, some armed with knives, fought with police as supermarkets and other businesses were attacked.
Looters raided a branch of Argos, smashing the rear doors and making off with satnavs, CD players and camcorders.
Police locked down a large section of the town centre, closing West Croydon station and warning residents to stay away.

A woman and small child were taken by ambulance to hospital with burns and breathing difficulties after a shop below their flat was set ablaze.
The pair were seen screaming above Greggs bakery in the High Street as youths wearing balaclavas carried homemade Molotov cocktails through the streets.
Riot police with shields charged at rioters before two fire engines arrived at the scene.

A line of police stood helpless a quarter of a mile away in Rye Lane.
A terrified wife also told how her rugby-playing husband was dragged off his motorbike by 12 hooded youths who beat him up and took his bike.
Another witness to the violence, teacher Matthew Yeoland, 43, said: 'There’s been tension for a long time. The kids aren’t happy. They hate the police.'
He added: 'For the kids, it’s their only way of venting their anger.
'They've all got BlackBerrys and gangs have got together.
'It’s like a war zone and the police weren't doing anything. There were too many people and not enough police.'
ENFIELD
Around 40 firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a warehouse in Enfield, London Fire Brigade confirmed.
The building, believed to be a Sony CD distribution centre, erupted in flames just before midnight last night before partially collapsing, according to a LFB spokesman.
Eyewitnesses described how they saw a gang of around 20 looters leaving the warehouse, in Solar Way, north-east Enfield, with electrical goods before the fire took hold.
Paul Lewis, a journalist for the Guardian, told the BBC that large plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the 70 metre building which had partially collapsed.
'This is further evidence of the riot spreading in all directions really,' he said.
A eyewitness, named as 'Tommy', also told the BBC how he saw a number of looters leaving the warehouse with electrical goods before the blaze took hold.
He said he was punched by the culprits as the fled the scene.
Scotland Yard confirmed officers were working with colleagues from LFB at the scene of the fire.

Parts of Camden Town were in lockdown last night, as rioters and looters filled the streets.
Chalk Farm Road was closed off as thieves started to trash a Sainsbury’s and Evans cycle shop.
Audience members attending a show at the Roundhouse in Camden were kept inside the venue under police instructions and Camden Town tube station was shut early.
Police faced running battles with youths who pelted them with bottles, bricks and sticks, while others looted several shops.
ELSEWHERE IN LONDONIn Ealing people were being forced out of their cars by rioters who then set them alight.
In Notting Hill, The Michelin starred restaurant The Ledbury was attacked and dinners were mugged, before thugs were chased off by kitchen staff.
There were reports on Twitter of yobs wielding machetes in Notting Hill.

Sloane Square Tube station was among dozens that were closed last night during the unrest.
A Tube worker said marauding gangs had been targeting designer clothing and jewellery stores.
In Kensington High Street armed officers from the Met's diplomatic protection unit stood by an abandoned bus.
The windscreen of the double decker had been smashed.
Disturbances were also last night reported in Woolwich and Lewisham and have also been seen in Oxford Circus, Brixton, Waltham Forest, Islington, Clapham Junction and Poinders End.
BRISTOL
Copycat rioters rampaged through Bristol today with police chiefs warning of 'volatile' scenes in the city centre.
More than 150 young rioters were causing disruption in the areas of St Paul's and Stokes Croft, the scene of rioting earlier this year amid anger over a new Tesco store.
People were warned to stay clear of the city centre as police launched efforts to bring the scenes under control.
A number of shops and vehicles have been damaged, an Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman said.
Several main roads have been closed 'to allow officers to take control of what is currently a volatile situation'.
'Officers are urging people to avoid the city centre at this time,' she said in a statement.
People already in the city centre should leave the area and go home, she added.
Chief Superintendent Jon Stratford said: 'We have been working closely with other forces and criminal behaviour like this will not be tolerated.
'We were hoping this type of disorder would not come to Bristol. However we have plenty of units on duty ready to respond.
'Our primary concern is to keep people safe and minimise disruption to residents, motorists and local businesses.
'We will always respect the right of any individual or group to take part in a peaceful protest.
'But when disorder occurs, we have a duty to the wider community to do everything we can to calm the situation and restore order and prevent criminality.'
LIVERPOOL
Merseyside Police said it had been dealing with 'a number of isolated outbreaks of disorder', including burning cars and criminal damage, in the south Liverpool area.
A witness in north Liverpool described scenes of mass violence in the city.
Riot police were working to contain a crowd of about 300 people, many of whom were youths with their heads and faces covered, according to the witness.

The building that poured flames through the streets of Croydon as the London riots raged had stood for more than 100 years.
House of Reeves is a family-run independent furniture store which was so ingrained in the community that the spot on which it stood - Reeves Corner - is actually named after the store.
The escalating disorder in London began in Tottenham and the carpet shop and apartment complex which provided such stark images when it was set ablaze was also a Victorian building that had survived the ravages of war and time.
But neither building was able to escape the rioting which has engulfed London and House of Reeves owners tonight said their lives had been ruined by the fire.
Trevor Reeves told Sky News: 'It has just provided (for) my family and the 15 or 20 staff and families that were supported, it's just completely destroyed.
'Words fail me. It's just gone, it's five generations. My father is distraught at the moment. It's just mindless thuggery.'
His brother Graham added: 'Our lives are destroyed, it will probably be someone else next week. It's horrendous, 35 years I have been down here.'
He said the business was established in 1867, but he now had 'nothing', adding: 'Everything is just gone, we have just got nothing left.
'I was in the Brixton riots but this is worse. My life is destroyed.'
Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said: 'I'm sickened to see this happening in my town. My first instinct is sympathy for the businesses and residents who have been directly affected by what's happened.
'The main building which was seen on fire at Reeves Corner is a family business called Reeves, which has been there for a century, and it's been completely destroyed.
'The people responsible for this wanton violence need to be brought to justice.'
Mr Barwell, who has lived in Croydon all his life, said he was trying to speak to the Home Secretary to urgently discuss police resources.
He said: 'The Met Police and fire brigade need to be given resources from other parts of the country to make sure that another night of this violence does not take place.'
Several blazes were seen across Croydon, with plumes of smoke rising from the buildings, prompting outrage from local residents.
Pub landlord Alan McCabe told the BBC: 'I have never seen such a disregard for human life. I hope they rot in hell.
'The grief they have caused people, the fear they have put in people's hearts, decent people who have done nothing to anyone.'
Simon Hoar, cabinet member for community safety at Croydon Council, said: 'It is an absolute disgrace. It has nothing to do with any issues these people have. These are pure common thieves more interested in getting a free telly.'
Mike Fisher, leader of Croydon Council, said: 'I am disgusted by the mindless hooliganism displayed by the criminal element that has come to Croydon.
'Businesses that have been around in Croydon for more than 100 years have been destroyed just because these morons think it is all right.
'The council will do all that it can to assist the police in bringing these people to book. It is simply not acceptable.'

London riots: police run out of cells as prisons and courts near 'crunch point'
The Metropolitan police has had to send riot detainees to neighbouring forces after it ran out of cells, prompting unions and charities to claim the courts, probation services and jails are at "crunch point".
With more than 600 arrests and public pressure building for a hardline response, the Ministry of Justice said those held will appear in court "within hours" under fast-track procedures.
However, the probation union Napo said severe delays in cases are likely as courts and probation offices closed and sent staff home early. Community service schemes were also cancelled. Damage caused to the magistrates court in Tottenham, north London, meant all cases that would usually be heard there were being transferred to Highbury Corner, further south.
Harry Fletcher, Napo's assistant general secretary, said: "The administration of probation and courts in London is in chaos because of the disturbances.
"Courts, both crown and magistrates, and probation offices are shutting down early and this is likely to continue for the rest of this week. This will lead to severe delays in the administration of justice. Offender supervision will be cancelled and other projects severely curtailed."
However, the crown prosecution service said it had set up a "dedicated team ... of prosecutors available to provide charging decisions 24/7 as quickly as possible". Alison Saunders, chief crown prosecutor for London, said the service would "expedite cases arising from the disorder, and have established designated magistrates courts to deal with them".
But if the arrests lead to successful prosecutions, experts have warned sending hundreds of under-18s to jail would be an "unprecedented" test for the prison system at a time when custody levels in young offender institutions are above safe limits.
Ministry of Justice figures last month showed occupancy rates for such institutions above 94% – over the Youth Justice Board's safe operating limit of 93%. Experts said that the majority of the arrests were likely to be children and the figure could rise over the coming weeks as specialist teams of police trawl through hours of closed circuit television footage in riot-affected areas.
With 2,200 youths in custody, even if half of those arrested so far turned out to be aged 18 or under it would mean a 15% rise in the numbers of teenage prisoners.
John Drew, the head of the Youth Justice Board, which oversees the youth justice system in England and Wales, attempted to allay fears that the upsurge in violence would mean youth jails were unable to cope. He told CYP Now, a trade magazine focusing on youth services, 300 beds were available for young offenders: "We are more than able to deal with any upsurge in demand."
But Andrew Neilson, director of campaigns at the Howard League for Penal Reform, said this was "not reassuring given the level of arrests".
He added: "We are seeing this all over the country and will need more than 300 beds. I think it's a crunch point for the ([prison)] system.
Prisons minister Crispin Blunt said: "A number of prisons and courts are being kept open on a 24-hour basis to deal with people arrested and charged over these disturbances. The criminal justice system will provide all necessary support to the police to ensure anyone involved in this kind of criminal activity is brought to justice as swiftly as possible.""
Neilson said one of the big issues already plaguing young offenders institutions was that teenage gang members from different parts of London ended up in the same cells.
The prison officers' association said it would do "all it could" to ensure that the influx of prisoners did not affect jail life, saying that there would inevitably be some mixing of "18-year-olds" and adult inmates which was not "good practice".
"Juveniles will be kept in separate wings. We are seeking a meeting with ministers about the situation. Our main concern is that there are no copycat disturbances in prisons as we have 85,000 people in prison and they don't need an awful lot to start up. Especially if we are moving them to make space," said the association.

A suspected looter in this week’s riots and his mother are being thrown out of their council home.
In the first case of its kind, Daniel Sartain-Clarke, 18, and his mother have been served with an eviction notice as council bosses seek to turf them out of their £225,000 taxpayer-subsidised flat.
Sartain-Clarke is charged with violent disorder and attempting to steal electronic goods from the Currys store at Clapham Junction, South London, on Monday night.
Under housing rules his mother – as the tenant – can be evicted from their two-bedroom flat in Battersea if anyone living there is involved in criminality.
There is likely to be a flood of similar cases as council leaders across England respond to public demands that looters face the toughest penalties possible.
In another day of dramatic developments:
*A serving paratrooper was remanded in custody charged with looting a £1,900 electric guitar in Manchester;
*The Ministry of Justice revealed that the arrest total had reached 1,600, and that 796 of those had already been before courts;
*Police were in revolt against the Government after criticism of their handling of the crisis by the Prime Minister and Home Secretary;
*Fresh revelations emerged about the gangster background of Mark Duggan, whose death sparked the riots.
*Sartain-Clarke was arrested after more than 100 looters went on the rampage on Monday night. For two hours, the mob ransacked mobile phone stores and sports shops such as Foot Locker and JD Sports.
*He appeared before magistrates in Battersea on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to burglary and violent disorder. He and two co-defendants were remanded in custody.
Last night Ravi Govindia, the leader of Wandsworth Council, which issued the eviction notice, said he wanted the ‘strongest possible action’ taken against rioters and looters.
‘This council will do its utmost to ensure that those who are responsible pay a proper price,’ he said. ‘Ultimately this could lead to eviction from their homes.
‘Our officers will continue to work with the courts to establish the identities of other council tenants or members of their households as more cases are processed in the coming days and weeks.
‘Most residents on our housing estates are decent law-abiding citizens who will have been sickened at the scenes they witnessed on their TV screens this week.
‘As much as anything else we owe it to them to send out a strong signal that this kind of violence will not be tolerated.’
But Sartain-Clarke’s mother said her human rights had been ‘taken for granted’.
Spanish-born Maite de la Calva, 43, said: ‘I understand there are people who have got to face justice because all this has been madness and savagery.
‘But, I believe our human rights have been completely taken for granted. Daniel was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
‘As a mother, I’m not responsible for my son’s actions and they are penalising me for his actions.’
The part-time worker said the decision had left her ‘very upset’ and she did not know where she and daughter Revecca, eight, would go.
Sartain-Clarke is being held at Feltham Prison, and his mother said he was ‘terrified’ of other prisoners and gangsters.
She said: ‘The other prisoners have been threatening the rioters. Daniel doesn’t know how to fight or defend himself. It’s breaking my heart right now. I left him so afraid.’
She claimed her son helped out in the community and had no history of trouble.
‘He’s a staunch member of the church,’ she said. ‘My son didn’t have a hoodie or balaclava. His face was clean and open. He’s very passive. He’s even been diagnosed with depression because he’s too passive.’
She added that his girlfriend J-Niel Starkei, 18, who was also arrested, had a promising career ahead of her.
She said: ‘She’s a nice girl, not a troublemaker. She was going to start an apprenticeship this September in event management and work part-time at a casino at Westfield shopping centre.’
Yesterday other councils including Manchester and Nottingham announced plans to evict the families of trouble-makers hauled before the courts for looting.
Bosses at Manchester City Council said they are preparing to evict the family of a 12-year-old boy photographed stealing a £7.49 bottle of wine from a Sainsbury’s store.
The boy was charged with burglary and was given a nine-month referral order on Thursday, which means he must see a probation officer once a fortnight. His 33-year-old mother, who has a
14-year-old daughter and a husband soon to be released from prison, said losing their home was her ‘biggest fear’ but admitted there was no excuse for his behaviour.
On a visit to Manchester yesterday, David Cameron repeated his determination to see looters evicted from council houses.
‘For too long we’ve taken a too-soft attitude towards people that loot and pillage their own community,’ he told BBC TV’s North West Tonight.
‘If you do that you should lose your right to the sort of housing that you’ve had at subsidised rates.
‘Obviously, that will mean they’ve got to be housed somewhere else.
‘They’ll have to find housing in the private sector and that will be tougher for them, but they should have thought of that before they started burgling.’
Earlier this week a petition calling for the thieves to lose all their welfare handouts became the first to be passed to Parliament under a new scheme.
It gathered more than 100,000 signatures – the threshold to trigger a Commons debate. The petition received so much web traffic that it crashed under the strain.
