Title: 5 Favorite rap duos ?
Post by: bouli77 on September 13, 2011, 06:21:55 AM
Duos are a staple in Hip Hop music, and a sought after commodity.

with different types of duos : the DJ/MC type of duo (Eric B. & Rakim, Gang Starr, etc.), the Producer/Rapper type of duos with the latter being the microphone specialist and the former having sometimes honorable/good microphone skills (Mobb Deep, UGK, Dogg Pound, etc.) or the MC/MC type of duos where both members are only mc's (and maybe occasional producers) (8Ball & MJG, CNN, OutKast, etc.)

I did not include BDP & the Beatnutz, because they were not duos originally. neither did I include Run DMC, NBN, Above the Law, even though only 2 of their members are rapping, they're not duos per se.

My list isn't who I consider the best duos but rather the groups I personally prefer and bump the most.

1. Gang Starr
2. OutKast
3. Dogg Pound
4. U.G.K.
5. Playaz Tryna Strive => duo from Vallejo composed of T-Pup & Philthy Rich. only 1 album released in 96 "all frames of the game" but what an album !! incredible production throughout the effort with live instruments used. very good chemistry between the two rappers who also happen to be decent lyricists and microphone technicians.

let me know if i forgot anybody major or not, which i probably did (i did my best though lol)

Oh man, that's a tough question.

Outkast, UGK, Mobb Deep, JMT, Gangstarr, Meth & Red are all good duos, and I'm sure I forgot some.

yeah my bad for forgetting the convicts as well. especially since i'm a fan of both Big Mike & 3-2. something serious and wicked buddah baby are two of my favorite south albums for sure and i always felt like Big Mike was the underdog of the Geto Boys considering he was just treated as a mere substitute of Willie D and all the drama he had at rap a lot. i also forgot havoc & prodeje.

 :o
list is way too long imo

cut it down n leave out album-collabo rappers like (meth/red), (ghost/rae) quinn/mess),, n stick to the "groups", actual duos

1. Gang Starr
2. Mobb Deep
3. OutKast
4. Dogg Pound/EPMD (tie)
5. M.O.P

honourble mention: Das EFX

This list is severely lacking if you're including artists who have released albums together. I hear of about 20 or so every hear. You should've added Madvillain and Cannibal Ox too. Their albums are considered underground classics.

No Dre and Snoop?

They haven't released an album as a duo, yet lol.
Neither have Raekwon and Ghostface and they made the list. A duo is a duo, whether they've made nine albums together or three songs. If they have a number of classics under their belt and people view them as a legendary duo then they should be included in the conversation.

they've not been active since, so they're not a duo... that's like saying the beatles is a duo cause George Harrison & John Lennon died  ::)

true Somethin Serious went gold and that was a serious accomplishment in 94 for Rap-A-Lot. cold album. the eponymous title is an absolute masterpiece, with the talkbox doing Mike's  backs lol. still serious sold well too. i was glad when pimp c made a remake of having thangs in 06

Yes, but their best-known work (established catalog) is with Jay as part of the dynamic. I'm willing to bet when they perform as a duo, they do songs that Jay had a hand in. It's the same with TLC. I mean, Naughty By Nature was technically two MC's but when you took Kay-Gee out the mix, it wasn't the same. A great duo is sold off the chemistry of those two people.

nah, son - u buggin now
Rev and DMC might as well even bring along the ashes of JMJ in an urn during every show,,, still dont make em a trio..
JMJ has been dead for nearly 10 yrs, so what is left is 2 persons -- "duo", ya dig?

beside, if u want to reach,, JMJ was never considered a "member" of the gorup untill 3 albums in anyway. wasnt even on teh first 3 album covers

Rev. Run & DMC are considered part of a "group", not a duo.

Rae and Ghostface are also considered part of a group. Regardless, their chemistry and the songs they've made together also make them a duo.

And that's what I had in mind when I made my list. Because their back-and-forth chemistry is what made the group what it was for me. I also had Phife and Q-Tip in my list. Even though ATCQ had 4 members, their chemistry is what mattered. And I think we can all agree that Treach made Naughty by Nature what it was.

I guess it's all just a matter of opinion or perception but Rae and Ghost have a catalog of non-"Wu-Tang Clan" collabos that gives them that value. Rev. Run and DMC without Jay and the "Run-DMC" moniker is like a Guru solo project without Premier. I'm not saying Rev and DMC don't have that chemistry. They quite obviously do but it's not the complete package to me and a lot of people. It would be like a 213 album without Nate Dogg. Yes, Snoop and Warren have a great chemistry but there's a noticeable piece of the puzzle missing.
