You had to work more hours because you lived on your own. I don't. I go to school, you certainly didn't. If I wasn't setting myself up to have a full-time, high paying job a few years down the road, I'd work full time too.

I wouldn't be so sure. You can't say that until you're in that situation. At one point I worked full time, done college in the evenings, as well as helping to raise 2 kids, train a German Shepherd Puppy, and help out around the house when I could. Draining as hell though, but I wasn't on big money, and any additional money I did have was used to pay tuition fee's, travel, books, materials, dog classes, and everything else that was needed at that time.
Incomings were actually quite well, and a hell of a lot more than a lot of my friends at the time, but with a house, 2 cars, wife and 2 kids (3 if you count the dog), that cash quickly gets hoovered up, and the outgoings made me look poor, hence the drive and ambition to use every bit of time I had to study regardless of tiredness. The first year of my youngest arriving, I literally done all of the above on 2-6 hours sleep a day

Yeh, you have a point on the level of compeition for jobs. That's because a lot of our industries (manufacturing, computer technology, coal mining, ship building) are either very few or dead all together, so the few jobs that do exist require a higher level of qualification.
I'm in my mid 20's, and I had to do a shyt load to get my job from a combination of work/study/raise family/pay bills. I have to work a lot harder today, than I would have had to back in the 70's, or even 80's because those generations were much more respectful, and hard working. You didn't get many claiming state benefits back then
I think this is where the UK is worse than U.S. We have a ton of people here on all sorts of BS benefits besides the typical "disability" benefit. Hell, you even get extra money is one of your kids can get diagnosed with that ADHD nonsense, so the powers that be have helped to nurture a nation and generation of lazy, negligent parents who don't need to do anything in order to get the same level or higher pay than someone who's out working hard up to 6 days a week

At times this is definitely true. No bills, No kids, not having to worry about money, or food or anything. It's a lot including pressure and stress when you have other mouths rely on you. There were only 2 worries back then and one was making sure I had a load of drink in the fridge cooled on a Thursday night ready for the weekend.
The other worry being, as Friday crept closer making sure I had a bitch (or 2) planned for the Friday & Saturday. It was a worry when you had those weeks when Friday got closer, and you eventually had to "settle" for one you had already. That was what was called a "re-cycled bitch"
