Title: Annual Springtime Daz R.R.G.B. Appreciation Thread
Post by: TraceOneInfinite Flat Earther 96' on February 07, 2012, 10:36:22 AM
Daz- Revenge Retaliation Get Back

This classic album was released on the eve of spring around 14 years ago back in 1998.  It would be the last classic Death Row album, feat. the signature Death Row sound with all the usual cast and characters from Pac, to Nate, to Kurupt and Snoop, even Ital Joe and the nicca from Big Pimpin make their presence felt.

The first single "In California" sounded like a bonafied hit right off the top, yet possibly by this time Suge and Death Row were being blackballed by the industry.  Either that or rap fans were too busy buying up Master P/No Limit albums at the time and had forgotten about the West.  The album failed commercially.  Selling somewhere around 300,000 total.

Yet for fans like myself it's in heavy rotation every year at this time for me.  Its like a tradition on the eve of spring I always dust off Revenge Retaliation Get Back and roll to it.  1998 was the year I turned 16 and got my drivers liscence just after this album was released.  Always brings back memories.

Classic album for sure. U right, it was Death Row's last classic.

Snoop did say the bought a nice of that Cd to create perception, but it still flopped, for their usual sales track. Pac's death effect on the west etc....

Yeah, I thought Snoop's comments on the album were rather odd.  He said he's never even heard it.  And that he didn't want to listen to it because Daz was dissin him at that time.  Daz may have dissed him in the media around that time, but as far as the album itself, Snoop appears on it and is even shouted out on the album.  So there was no Snoop diss on the album.  Also, if Death Row bought up copies they didn't buy that damn many... because I don't even think it went gold.

Soopafly's guest spots and production skills really made that album great.  One of the best from the west.

Yeah, Soopafly was at the top of his game at the time.  Daz also had a lot of heat left in the tank.  Funny thing about it is I remember them reporting that Daz was the "Vice President and CEO" of Death Row while Suge was in prison upon the release of the album.   Then they did the same shit when Kurupt went over to the Row in 2004.  Both times it didn't mean or amount to shit.

agreed, it's not a classic. it's a very good album nonetheless, but yeah there's no real direction with the album. there's a cohesive sound even though you can feel tracks were added here and there (initiated for example), Daz, Soopa & Carl Butch Smalls did their thing music wise. still my favorite Daz cd with RAW.

that album is supposed to have sold 800k copies, which I highly doubt, and Snoop may be right about Death Row buying copies to hype up the release. Snoop said Daz dissed him on the album but I doubt he did it, but he did diss him on "What It Iz", on the R.A.W. album. so Snoop might have confused that album with R.A.W.. one thing for sure is that Snoop was pissed that Daz was still on Death Row and working on Snoop material (including a Snoop greatest hits), making money off of his name in a sense and that's where their falling out stems from.

Great album, not classic. I was kinda disappointed with the album. Production was no where as good as Daz's work on Dogg Food maybe cause Dre wasn't doing the mixing.

Yeah, these tracks must have been recorded well in advance of the albums release, because Kurupt is still at his best on all of his appearances on Revenge Retaliation Get Back.  Because by the time Kurupt dropped his solo Kuruption later that year he had already fallen off.

...in fact one of the best things about the album is all the guest appearances are all on point.  Bad Ass is another highlight of this album on the intro track and "Gang Bangin Ass Criminal" and "The Ultimate Come Up".   We also hear from a few other big name West Coast artists who weren't usually feature on Death Row releases.  Big names like WC, Be Legit, and Mc Eight.

I read somewhere on here that Kurupt said he wished he had taken Dre's advice back in the day and made that a single disc album. I thought the concept of the album with the east and west disc with the old newspaper cover was really cool, but it probably would have been better off being one disc and possibly splitting the content up between east and west.

Word...    On the surface everything was planned out perfect.  They had an excellent lead single with "We Can Freek It".  The album had a great look with the old newspaper cover, and the concept of having an East Coast and a West Coast album.   But other things were poorly planned.  Like Dre, Warren G, and Noreaga all having "bonus tracks' made it sound a little cheap, rushed, and poorly organized.

...also, bottom line is Kurupt wasn't still spittin at the level he had in the past.  He fell short of what he was capable of.  He did make a solid comeback with his 2nd and 3rd albums, but some songs he sounds like he isn't even trying.

Agreed. RRGB was not a good ALBUM. It had many good songs but it was just not a good album to me. RAW was kinda thrown together too but it was more like an album to me than RR&GB was. It kept more of a theme to it. RAW is way too under appreciated, but the way it was originally released is mostly to blame for it being overlooked.

i agree... that song is original. the beat is on some different shit, and the message is real. doesn't really sound forced at all...daz does sound funny as fuck on that track, though.

besides tray dee's part it sounds about as forced and corny as possible. daz fuckin tries to song on it and the intro goes "this gangbangin is serious business, so thank god for your life"

i bought Daz's RAW album for a $1.50 and sold that bitch for like 4 dollars at CD Wharehouse that shit was terrible to me! fuck i be sounding like a hater around here but yalll niggaz be overating every fucking DPGC affiliated album.

yea, u are soundin like a hater round here....RAW was a great album. Daz's last great solo, actually.

Tha Dogg Pound Gangsta LP and This Is The Life I Lead were both very solid IMO too. Other than that his albums have been about 15% good music and the rest filler.

If Daz had kept that laid back flow he had on Dogg Food and this album he would have had a much better career

i dunno what ur talkin about, soopafly had a dope verse, and bad azz wasnt bad either. daz, i agree, sounded funny singin that shit, but overall, it wasn't that bad of a song like u makin it seem.

and yes, bangin is serious, u really that big of a square? muthafuckaz die left and right from puttin in work, so theyre thankin God for being alive....whats so hard to understand? whether or not they're really active is another story, but nothing wrong with that concept for a song.

minus tray deee those guys are 10 times more likely to die getting struck by lightning than "putting in work" you really think daz soopafly and bad azz are or ever were serious gangbangers?

well, thats the image they portray...so if u not guna bump this song due to them not really puttin in work, then dont bump 99% of their catalogue, cuz thats what they rap about. and not just them, it's most rappers who rap about that sorta thing. u cant single out this song.

You know NIK You ever had one of those conversations where you think the guy is acting retarded but then you realize hes fully retarded, yeah I just had that little moment with you. Feel honored, I'm sure you'll tell yourself that later today after 1 of you finishes masturbating to rave girls, just make sure your home and not off not beating Sikotics ass.

How in the fuck do u have the nerve to call someone retarded after what u just typed? That shit took mental retardation to another level..

So on Text its retarded but in practice its normal?  :loco:

I never thought I could experience that moment twice with one person, congratulations.

Daz album is one of my favourite 'slept on' West Coast classics

Shit just bangs, even that Thank God for My Life track. Daz wasn't afraid to put what he loved on wax. For that he's one of the most realist cats in the game.

I was bumpin the album like two months ago and I realized how this shit was better than what he has put out since... lyrically it wasn't genius but at least it was somehow decent the way he put rhymes together and he wasn't a caricature of himself like he's been from 2006 on. a lot of shit still sounds retarded though. but you have more introspective songs like Only 4 U and Baby Mama Drama which is an oddball, but an excellent song nonetheless. Daz's verses are dope and Lil C Style kills it. The weak songs, to me, are : In California => never really liked that song, it sounds nice but it's way too cliché, it's a subpar California Love, and I don't really like California themed song, unless it's really really dope (like West Up or California Love) / The Ultimate Come Up => never liked the beat, Bad Azz and Eiht sound out of place. The rest is consistent and versatile, Daz can make gangsta songs, raunchy songs, and love songs alright. Kurupt is on point on most of his features. The intro and first songs are fucking dope (hell of a posse cut with a typical Daz beat). The bay features are on point.

That album still sounds good nowadays, while I think R.A.W. didn't really stand the test of time even though it's still my second favorite Daz album.

I know a lot of people shit on Thank God 4 U Life but I always liked the weird beat and Tha Gang all spit solid verses, even Daz with his cheesy singing lol.

How can you not like "In California"?

That really fucked me up as a kid.  Because I had always that shit sounded like a sure fire hit to me if Id ever heard one.  Yet it barely ever got played on BET, never got played on MTV and radio... and they were steady playin this Master P trash.  It was an injustice.

too cliché and not executed well enough, it's an alright track for sure, definitely one of the tracks that i skip on RR&GB, i was wrong when i said "never really liked that song" cause I liked it a lot when I was a teen but I realized the raps weren't that good.

it had no promo...Suge was in jail at that point and Daz was the last man standing, I always thought this album should have sold more but the circumstances prevented it
