For once, I agree with NIK. Actually to the definition of each interval lmao.

Out of five is so retarded. Plus Will you're grading has no middle ground. There's a HUGE difference between a 6 & a 6.5 or a 7 & a 7.5. Like you're only fucking a 7, but you can almost wife a 7.5 if you so please. As Meek Mill once said, "there's levels to this shit, bruh".

More importantly, Will, you're not fooling anyone about getting pussy. I don't even need to see your ugly European face to know you're going to be the 40 year old virgin in real life in about three years.

I use a 10 point system with a half score

The traditional 5 point score doesn't reflect the nuances of one album to another

Dogg Food would be a 3, and so would be Blue Carpet Treatment, yet they're not in the same league etc etc

Look up medicre in the dictionary if you're struggling with the complexity of my system

mediocre is used to describe stuff of low quality/unremarkable... unlike the word "average", mediocre is typically used as a slight.

an example from webster "The critics dismissed him as a mediocre actor."

point bein, if u look at a grading scale, 50% is a fail, and theres nothing average about failing.

50%=F
60%=D
70%=C
80%=B
90%=A
100%=A+

it's no different in music as it would be in grading test scores.

Title: Re: THE RATING SCALE
Post by: Sccit on September 02, 2013, 12:02:19 PM
almost...mediocre is used in a harsher sense than average. mediocre is often used as an antonym for good....with average, it's rarely used as an antonym for good, but more so as a middle-ground, or a combined mean. mediocre has more of a negative connotation.

either way, that dont even matter, considerin a 5/10 is still a fail, by any grading scale.

i did...i even used a quote from websters. i know it's hard, but try to follow, hack.

mediocre antonyms-
excellent, fine, first-class, first-rate, good, high-grade, superior, top-notch

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/mediocre

average antonyms-
abnormal, exceptional, extraordinary, odd, out-of-the-way, strange, unusual
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/average

see the difference?

how about this

you either like something or dont so if an album is really good say  "i like this ALOT"

if u like it  but its not instant classic just say "i like it"

now heres where it gets tricky kids...

if you DONT like an album at all and would never listen again say something to the effect of "i REALLY dont like this album"

if its something that you can see the reedeeming value of but just doesnt appeal to you one could say "i dont like it very much"

no numbers, no decimals just four different options. like it, like it alot, dont like it, really dont like it.

Problem I have with describing albums as average is its all about context

"It's..

average for a 90's Dre beat

average for todays radio

average for 18th century music

average for a Kreayshawn track"

naah, look at the antonyms...they're similar, but they have a slight difference. the main one being that mediocre is used in more of a negative context than average.. learned this shit in like 5th grade lol

"A player of average ability can turn in a mediocre performance. That would mean he probably played below his ability. To say that his ability is mediocre would be an uncommon usage of the word. But, you could say his performance was just average, meaning that compared to others he was somewhere in the middle of the pack."

there are differences.

Title: Re: THE RATING SCALE

A. AVERAGE
1. n the figure found by dividing the total set of a number of numbers in a set.
2. ordinary-vb to find the average.

B. MEDIOCRE
1. adj not very good
2. moderate to inferior in quality
n MDEIOCRITY

also, average is a rank based on the ability or performance of all others (albums, artists, players, etc.), while mediocre would be judging against a perceived standard (personal or otherwise) -- ie: average has a better chance of being objective than mediocre, which is more subjective and is used in more of a negative context

He's right. Calling something average can be seen as negative, but not to the same extent of someone throwing phrases like "mediocrity at its finest" around.
