There is a possibility that the old Maori tattoo artists had a knowledge of this and were able to place the lines onto the pathways and enhance/modify the flow.
But I don't think many have the knowledge any longer.

Could be, the old people would have had their own qi-type beliefs. But old Polynesian tattoo designs borrowed heavily from their surroundings..... the sea.... fish.... turtles.... birds.... plants.... ferns (maori).
