G Rap is a legend, no doubt. But, we're talking about a guy who hasn't dropped a relevant album in about a Decade. His collaborating with Necro today isn't as prestigious as this same collab happening in the 90's. With nothing else really going on in his career, what other options are there for G Rap? Necro has a loyal base. G Rap's base are all nearing their 40's and probably don't really check for him any longer.
As far as Necro's skill level. His production is far better than anything he spits. Lyrically, he does what he sets out to do. Talk sick shit. He's not looking to make any lyrical masterpieces. But, often times his voice and flow are just terrible. At the end of the day, we listen to this music and not just read the lyrics. Necro is very tough to listen to, as most Horrorcore rappers are. But, if you enjoy Horrocore, Necro is what you are looking for. He is that sub-genre's Nas.
As for Kendrick, I don't believe that he is a commercial douchebag. It wasn't like he was just plucked off of Youtube or some talent TV show and shoved down our throats. The Dre co-signed got him in the door, but his skill kept him around. People think that everyone and everything commercial is created by a machine. Why didn't Knoc-Turn'Al have the same impact as Kendrick? What about Hittman?

I agree with this shit on both levels. But I also don't think that makes Kendrick or Drake bad. Music is a reflection of times. Drake is an extension of where LL Cool J, Jay Z, Puffy, Ja Rule (besides the voice, Drake is very much like Ja Rule), and all them Bling Era Eastcoast rappers took the game. But you know what, back then I said Puff and Ja Rule were wack too, and they all sold. I like LL, but he is in that same sing-songy soft rapper area. Drake is in that line of rappers. I don't think in the 80's he would have been accepted, and in the 90's he wouldn't have an avenue to be heard, but that's irrelevant. What matters is that Drake is a product on those other commercial cats and he is following in their footsteps. Not my cup of tea, never was my cup of tea. But it's always been there. Let's not act like what Drake is doing is changing the game, he is an extension of a certain, sales proven, type of Hip-Hop.
As for Kendrick, as I said, if Ice Cube would rap today he'd put out something like GKMC. See, in the 80's and 90's the gangsta culture took off. Cube was more of a lyricist, Dre was a musical talent who never smoked weed until he recorded the Chronic. Not being a real gangsta was a real thing in the 80's and 90's. Cube surrounded himself with real dudes, like WC or Mack 10. Right now, Kendrick's album was almost post-Gangsta Rap. It was a reflection of a common kid who grew up in this madness that the older dudes bragged about being a part of. If Kendrick existed in the 90's, half of LA would hate him and the other half wouldn't care. You'd more likely see Kendrick doing music like Pharcyde, Hieroglyphics or Jurassic 5. There would be no room for a guy to be a Westcoast rapper and not do Gangsta Rap.
With all that said I don't think it's a bad thing Kendrick and Drake are the top 2 dudes in the game. The game matures and it moves on, society moves on. And I'm never oppose to dudes making money. Anyone who wants these younger cats to fail is just purely hating. Let these kids make their money, because lord knows their earning years in the rap game are small. so get in, sell 1,000,000 CDs, 5,000,000 downloads and get out with the money and a nice savings to live off of and send your kids to college.

I completely disagree with Lord Jamar. L.L. and Heavy D. These were two major factors in the 80's and 90's and they made plenty golf soft rap. Tupac was releasing singles like Toss It Up with 4 singers surrounding him. Domino was a popular name on the West Coast and he was harmonizing. Bone Thugs harmonized. Hip Hop fans loved Nate Dogg. That notion that these guys wouldn't have been accepted in the 80's and 90's is laughable.
@MDogg: Drake is more a mix of L.L. and Will Smith. He's a lot less Ja Rule. Will Smith in the 80's and partially in the 90's was popular amongst the Hip Hop community. L.L. has had the lasting power. Drake Would've found a home somehow in the 90's.
Kendrick would've been more a Likwit Crew type of MC. He's street enough to get respect from the "gangstas" but lyrical enough to get the Backpack respect. The Pharcyde, Hieroglyphics and J5 completely separated themselves from the street MCs. That wouldn't have been Kendrick. As far as "real" guys being around him, what do you think Jay Rock is?

sorry tell you but LL Cool J's first 6 albums did not sound anything close to drake . Most of LL cool J's track were not made for chicks at all . Most Heavy D's music was party tracks with a few tracks for the girls. Heavy D & LL Cool J were real hood guys unlike Drake. Will Smith did not make music like gay ass drake either. I can kinda see what Hack means, it's 'authentic' in its elements but there's too much wrong with it to make it really enjoyable (Necro is completely monotone, his flow is off, the verses don't punctuate right like its a continuous punch line, Kool G is mixed off beat like they just pasted in an emailed verse, and he sounds like he took a sandwich into the booth with him).
But yeah, the beat is nice and the verses are raw.

Necro got KGR to go from doing a short EP with him to an entire LP:
Ths whole project started off with us coming to the agreement to do an EP.
From there, it transcended into doing a full, complete album. Once a certain amount of songs got done and there was a certain amount of chemistry going on, it was evident that we had something for the masses, we decided to just go ahead and keep it moving and do a full LP.
As far as direction and all that, I would say the majority of the direction really came from Necro. Necro approached me about doing a project so he already had a vision. I'm sure he already had an idea of what he would want to do with a G Rap so from there, I let him lead the way. It was like his idea of a creation to begin with.
So I kind of let him lead the way with a majority of it and then I gave input here and there. Especially with certain things like going into the direction of doing certain songs that were more Mafioso type of rap.
We were feeding off each other. It was his idea to call the collaboration Godfathers, the collaboration of Necro and Kool G Rap, so it only made sense for me to feed off of that and want to step into the terrain of doing Mafioso types of songs.
It just flowed naturally. I don't even think there was a lot of crazy deep though placed into it. It didn't feel like there was a full, blown out blueprint or outline. It just flowed out naturally.
Necro just do what he do and I just do what I do and the sh*t just adds up.

Come on guys. This is a westcoast forum. Kendrick IS the west coast right now. Like it or not. Whether you think he is commercial or not. It doesn't matter.
Fact is, he made his own way through years on the mixtape scene and deserves his time. His one line about King of New York on Control was not a serious claim and everyone knows that.
Kendrick is making headlines for the right reasons on the west coast. Not for beefing with 50 cent. Not for getting shot or arrested, he is making good music and even appealing to people outside of hip hop. Let's respect him for that, even if that means you don't listen to his music.

What you have to know is that many here like to pick an unknown, or underground rapper, then claim that rapper is better than your favorite rapper, then when you disagree they then claim you know nothing about Hip-Hop. Even someone like me, who has heard Necro, if I haven't listened to him until I like him, then I don't know what I'm talking about. Honestly, I don't like Nerco's music, but it has it's place. There is a certain core audience that Necro and other "Horrorcore" rappers have. Honestly, I liked the shit Gravediggaz did and RZA back in the 90's, but I really haven't been feeling it since. Even when Eminem and D-12 got a bit more Horrorcore, I wasn't really feeling it. It just ain't my shit. I mean, when I'm not listening to hip-hop, I am listening to Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield and other soul and funk artist. Just ain't my shit.
