India blames Pakistan for Kashmir violence

By Sheikh Mushtaq

NADI MARG, India (Reuters) - India blamed Pakistan Tuesday for stoking violence in the Kashmir Valley after 24 Hindus, including women and children, were shot dead there by suspected Islamic militants.

"We have reasons to believe that all these terrorist activities are being carried out at the behest of our neighbor, Pakistan," Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha told reporters in New Delhi after senior members of the cabinet reviewed security.

Suspected Muslim militants lined up men and women outside their homes in the remote village of Nadi Marg on Sunday night and gunned them down. Two children and 11 women were among the dead provoking outrage across India.

Pakistan strongly condemned the attack and rejected allegations it was involved.

Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan came close to war last year over Kashmir. Mostly Hindu India accuses its Islamic neighbor of sponsoring a separatist revolt in Muslim majority Kashmir.

Sinha said he had conveyed Indian concerns about cross border activity to the United States and Britain which had both condemned the killings.

"There is need for the international community to recognize the fact of activities from across the border," he said referring to his telephone conversations with Secretary of State Colin Powell and British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Monday.

None of the nearly dozen guerrilla groups fighting Indian rule in Kashmir claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack, but Indian government leaders said Islamabad had a role in nearly every act of terror in the Himalayan region.

"Every single terrorist act which takes place in Jammu and Kashmir or elsewhere in the country, somewhere our neighbor has a hand in it," said Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani after he visited the village.

Pakistan says it gives only moral support to the Kashmir "freedom struggle."

Pakistan's foreign minister, Mian Mehmood, said Tuesday he deplored "baseless allegations" made by members of Advani's Bharatiya Janata Party blaming Pakistan for the latest attack.

"This (massacre) is a reprehensible act which we condemn in the strongest terms," Mehmood said in a statement.

Advani told some 200 Kashmiri Hindus in Nadi Marg that the attack appeared aimed at driving them out of the Kashmir Valley.

"If you feel insecure, we will take you to a safer place, but that is what the enemy wants," he said to heckles from an angry crowd.

"We want to leave, save us," they shouted back.

At least 300,000 Hindus have already fled the Kashmir Valley in the largest migration since the 1947 partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan. Only 10,000 are left.

WASHINGTON CONDEMNS ATTACKS

The United States has condemned the attack and renewed a call for India and Pakistan to hold talks.

Washington helped pull the two countries back from the brink of war last year after Islamabad said it would stop Muslim militants from crossing into the Indian side of Kashmir.

An Indian official said Powell had conveyed to Sinha that he would speak to Pakistan again about cross-border activity.

The attack was the worst since a state election in October that ushered in a new government whose chief minister, Mufti Mohammad Syed, promised to bring a healing touch to the region.

Syed has been trying to persuade Hindus to return to the Kashmir Valley.

The Indian army said it had killed eight guerrillas in new operations across Kashmir on Monday.

Train of Thought should be deleted.

People with no lives, spend their day looking for news clippings to post up...in order to make another religion look worse then their own. Im not religious at all, but i recognize that there are good and bad in ALL religion. So attempting to make another religion appear as the ONE evil..is fuckin useless, and basically stupid.

Agreed.

And Fini, what? He posted an article-to make Muslims look bad or not-that showed it wasn't all those evil infidels' fault. How do you feel about "heroes" killing women and children? They're still heroes, aren't they, because they're destroying a vipers' nest? That's right, of course.
