Title: 2 of the best Doggfather Songs not written by snoop himself ?
Post by: WestSideDon on April 15, 2014, 06:33:18 AM
Yeah, so i was listening to the Doggfather album lately. The album is pretty average, but there were a few standout tracks. But then i saw on some lyrics site that 2 of these songs "2001" and "Downtown Assassins" had no writer credit for snoop. I know the credits and booklets at death row had been pretty fucked up, like on doggystyle were there was just the comic and no infos about the writers etc. I don't have the doggfather as a physical copy, so I never saw the booklet. If someone here has it, can you tell me if theres some info on this 2 songs in the booklet ? Or any infos about the songs at all ? Was this maybe a move by Suge to discredit snoop, because we all know how fucked up the situation was at death row while this album was made ? Would be dissappointing to see these 2 great tracks were written by someone else, because especially 2001 sounded like old school snoop.

most likely tray deee wrote snoop's verse on downtown assassins and if I'm not mistaken, bad azz and kurupt wrote 2001. tha doggfather is a classic imo.

Where did you get that info from ?

Yeah but I dont think so, Snoop was a dope writer and rapper back then. Just listen to him freestylin in these times, his lyrics were dope as fuck.
Don't forget how much he wrote for the chronic. So this is what bothers me about these 2 songs, snoop clearly had the skills to write something dope but I think he wasn't even motivated to make the album which would explain why it's just not nearly as good as chronic or doggystyle. You can clearly hear on some of the songs that he was unmotivated to actually make musicand he sounds much less energetic than on doggystyle, which is understandable. He had a fallout with Dre, his close friend Pac died, the situation at death row was fucked up and he was facing a murder trial. Thats a lot of shit, so I can imagine its pretty difficult to focus on writing and recording music while youre facing all of this.

true. You could barely hear Snoop on some of the tracks like Doggfather, Freestyle conversation etc. I always thought that was due to the mixing of the vocals but Snoop just didnt bring it on those songs. On other tracks like Gold Rush, Downtown Assassins, 2001 he ripped. It was a very uneven record due to the inconsistency.

And that is why the record was such a major let down compared to his previous work. Even the best mc can't do good music without motivation.
The album concept was pretty cool with all that mafia/godfather style but he shouldn't have done the album this way and with songs like freestyle conversation where even his flow was a complete mess. So I can't agree with anyone calling this a classic, because it isn't even an above average album. And thats coming from me, one of the biggest snoop fans out there.

Bad Azz even had a small cameo on the first verse of "2001". maybe each of them (bad azz, kurupt, threat) wrote 1 verse for that song.

He had a fallout with Dre, his close friend Pac died, the situation at death row was fucked up and he was facing a murder trial. Thats a lot of shit, so I can imagine its pretty difficult to focus on writing and recording music while youre facing all of this.

You nailed it, that's the reason why, Snoop himself said he wasn't happy with that album.

I think the final track list was one of the weakest.

Put together the earlier revision that starts with the OG of O.G. and you got a much better record 8)

I'm pretty sure there are writing/production credits for the Doggystyle songs featured on "Death Row's Greatest Hits" and other compilations.

I can't lie when I first bought tha doggfather I expected some g funk soundin' record like doggystyle or dogg food. listenin' to it now it's one of snoop's best albums.

I never liked the album, still don't. Its just so fuckin dry. Granola even.

You can't hate on Snoop for using ghostwriters tho. He paid his dues and wrote A LOT for Dre. Besides, atleast he didn't hide it, you see his name isn't credited on those songs.

I don't have my No Limit Top Dogg booklette anymore but I believe he thanked Tray Deee and Bad Azz for writing for him in there.

Yeah and cant even be called ghostwriting because it clearly says who wrote what in the booklet.
And ive checked the booklet for Snoop Dogg: Death Rows greatest Hits and there are writer credits for all of the songs.

DOC wasnt ghostwriting for Snoop, on BCT he was a co-writer on like 3 songs or something.
Snoop even said it himself in an interview that they wrote some of the songs on that album together, like "Thats That Shit".

Your right, Snoop was totally unmotivated for the album.  That's why he didn't have the energy to keep riding for the West Coast and to ride for his homie Pac.  He had just escaped 25 to Life in Prison when he beat his murder trial, Snoop was becoming a family man and wanted to get away from gangsta rap the way Dre tried to with Aftermath Presents...

But still... Snoop was still on top of the game, and everybody was demanding that gangsta shit.  So Snoop was caught in no man's land.  Thank God, he had his niccaz from the LBC Crew and the Dogg Pound, they were still on fire at that point in their careers and any dopeness you hear on the Doggfather is because of the Dogg Pound and the LBC Crew.  His homies came through and made it an album that people still listen to and some even love to this day.

...For me though, this album was the greatest disappointment (other than Pac dying) in all my years as a hip-hop fan.   I had been waiting for that Snoop album for so long and Snoop was like Michael Jordan or Joe Montana, he was like that hero that never let you down.  In a big game Jordan always rose to the occasion.  When your a kid you really believe in heroes and you think they are superhuman.  With Suge in prison, Pac dead, and Dre's Aftermath album coming out weak.... ALL EYES WERE ON SNOOP.  He was the fuccing last man standing for all the hip-hop that I had grown up to and that had been the soundtrack to so many good times I had in the mid-90's.

...I still remember the feeling when I was flipping through the album.  Expecting that banger... expecting that "Gin and Juice" type of cut.  The kind of cut that would be like an anthem for the whole school year... my life had been great thus far but had suddenly fallen apart and I was counting on tha Doggfather album for inspiration to bring me back to life. I kept flipping thru, and by the time I got to like track 18, then 19... this impending doom came over me.... finally I got to the last joint and thought there was still hope like it was a 2pac dedication or something and it turned out to be nothing.......

That spelled the end for the West Coast dominance and the mid-90's golden age of rap.

Kuruption (even though Kurupt admits he had lost his fire)... I don't remember being that disappointed in that album.  Maybe I should of been, but I wasn't.  It came out around the same time as Bad Azz Word On The Streetz and although the albums didn't blow up, for me personally it was like a West Coast resurgence in my own stereo system.

"We Can Freak It" was a jam that at the time I was able to bump like I bumped "Let's Play House", so I was pretty much satisfied with the first single.  It wasn't a catastrophic drop off like "Who Am I" was compared to "Snoop's Upside Your Head".

Also, the Kuruption album had some hidden gems, like track #6 on the East Coast album "The Life" I must've bumped that track 1,000 times when that album came out, just looking out my window reminiscin and shit... that was a beautiful song... Also at least Kuruption did have Dre on it.  Dre even did a video and mini-movie for the song "Questions".  It had a Warren G joint as well... Daz was still hot at the time and him, Soopafly and Tray Dee helped out on a few nice joints.

So... yeah, as much as that album sucked I actually had no disappointment over Kuruption.

Lol the fact that Snoop's music has to be compared to todays music (which is clearly the WORST era for rap music) says a lot.

Looking back, its no wonder the West Coast fell off so hard.

- Pac died so our leader was gone
- Dre gave us a bunch of dull piano music with his early Aftermath releases
- Snoop gave us Doggfather then a "dirty-south" inspired album
- Kurupt gave us We Can Freak it (classic) then a double disc of ass
- Cube was inactive and focusing on movies

all our heavyweights were giving us letdowns. Mack 10, Coolio, E-40, niggas like that were still poppin but we needed the guys listed above.

This will always be one of my favorite albums.  Dj Pooh's sound is way too funky on this.

2001 gets played consistently and will never get old.

Snoop was just in a different head space and it is what is.  This album is just the shit.

Yup! Obviously not better than Doggystyle but I've always liked Doggfather. Got some dope ass songs. Downtown Assassins, Blueberry, Gold Rush, Vapor etc. I understand how some say it feels like it's dry but that's kinda why I like it. It just has more of a RAW feeling. Like more of an underground feeling. I think it's top 3 Snoop album.

Refuse to believe that shit. That sounds like Snoop's writing.

Was listening to the songs again, and was basically thinking the same thing. Snoops writing is on point on the good songs here, so I think he couldve easily came up with verses like on downtown assassins and 2001. Especially lines like

I hope things get better for you
Cos I'mma make things get better for me
And keep the Doggystyle hottest thing out the LB
The L-L-G wit DPG by the sea
We ride at high tide, the East is my side

or

They say once upon a time in the land of the loccs
Where it's all about dope and pistol smoke
I packs me a heavy calibre .38 revolver
Weed out, Dp'd out, GC'd out
Oh, did you not know
Snoop wit the .44 knockin at'cha door

on 2001 sound like old school snoop lyrics. He has even done some annotations about the lyrics on rapgenius where he explains the meaning and how the lyrics are intended, so it's even more unlikely that he didnt write it himself.

But anyway, listening to the album again I may have to take back the "not above average" argument. The album is for sure above average, especially when compared to some other albums back then and like every album nowdays, but not great or even classic. There are just too many tracks where snoop sounds like a zombie unmotivated to spit a single bar, and though its just stupid to compare the production and the style on here to DS, everybody should admit that the production here is not on the same level, but still the album offers a handfull of good to pretty great songs, of course not even close to doggystyle, but like I said pretty great none the less.

listened to this again along with "Kuruption!" yesterday...whether he wrote it or not Snoop's flow on "2001" was sick 8)

I changed my mind about the album too I think its pretty dope maybe even his 2nd best album up there with "Tha Last Meal"

Fair analysis. I agree with most of what you said. I honestly not trippin on the beats that much. The production would NEVER top Doggystyle. But I still think it had some dope beats. Like I said earlier, they had more of an underground sound to just bust mad lyrics! The lyrics were dope also. Blueberry and Goldrush were SICK! Kurupt, Technic, Bad Azz were all on point and hungry in those days.

The Tray Deee's veres on Downtown Assassins was STUPID. I love when he says "THINK I MIGHT BE DECEASED BEFORE I REACH MY CALLIN, BUT AS LONG AS I'M HAULIN, MY HEAT I'M STALLING" HA! Fools don't know how gangsta that line is. Tray was spitting some real street shit on that song.

Kurupt verse on Gold Rush is one of my favorites. The theme makes it sick. They are outlaws and they take you on a trip through the OLD WIld Wild West!

"FROM COAST TO COAST, NIGGAS MASH ON EVERY STAGE COACH.
MY DISCIPLES, WITH RIFLES, LETHAL AND HOLD POSTS.
THE OFF-THE-ROCKER ROLLER COASTER, ON A SIX-SHOOTER HOLSTER!
WE DPG ON EVERY WANTED POSTER"

"BATTLE UP, OR SADDLE UP AND SHAKE THE SCENE!
OR GETCHA POCKETS SHAKEN, CLEAN SLUGS IN YOUR SPLEEN!
i CAN'T HELP IT, I;M HEARTLESS, YOU CAN'T HACK IT!
WITH MY SIX-SHOOTER ON MY HIP AND DUSTY JACKET!
LIKE THAT, COCK BACK, QUICK TO PULL MY STRAP!
JUST TO PUT THE HORSEMAN ON THE MAP!

KURUPT AT HIS FINEST! Technic was sick also. Snoop as well.

I like Vapors and how Snoop goes into story telling. I also always thought Groupie was like "It ain't no fun" Part 2. lol. I like Up Jump the Boogie ft Kurupt. Doggfather, 2001. I just really thought this album was underrated. Of course not DOggystyle level but still dope. Top 3 SNoop IMO.

kurupt was still in his prime on tha doggfather, he killed all of his verses : up jump tha boogie, gold rush, groupie, blueberry

i think the final tracklisting was a bit weak compared to what it could have been but it's still a very solid album, the main problem being Snoop and his voice being too low on the tracks, other than that, as a collective effort I think it showcased the skills of his camp at the time with the LBC Crew (minus Lil Style) on their A game.

I also think Snoop's Upside Ya Head was a very dope song, overall DJ Pooh provided good beats for the album, but I can understand how it was a disappointment for most fans since it's very different from doggystyle and not what you would expect from Snoop.

i don't think there's a terrible song on the album, there are some fillers : freestyle conversation, doggy land, me & my doggs, and some subpar songs : snoop bounce but other than that i think there's a good variety of songs and there's always songs you can bump at different times according to your mood, i think it's more of a night time album than a day time album that you would bump in the summertime as most g funk releases are.

Anybody here has a list of all the songs which were intended to be on doggfather or recorded during the album sessions, but did't made the final cut ?
I think i saw a thread here once which explained the different stages of the album tracklist, but I can't find it right now...

Was listenin to the top dogg album today, and checked the booklet. Like you said in the thanks section, snoop thanks tray deee & bad azz for their writing work on "doin too much" and "Just Dippin". They are even called "ghostwriters" in the booklet, I think thats because on the 2 songs snoop is also credited as a writer but the songs were most likely written by just bad azz & tray deee.  Not like on doggfather were snoops name isn't creditet (Although like some others here I doubt that these doggfather songs were not written by him, but this discussion wont lead to anything)

Then he's obviously talking about these 2 songs.

The entire album ? I think he said he used ghostwriters for some of the songs, not the whole album. Can't remember him explicitly saying the whole album.

that was pretty much the concept of the album, him not writing anything, i think all the writers are credited too, which makes them co-writers and not ghostwriters. that's why tray deee dissed him in an interview in prison, comparing him to puffy

dj pooh came thru on that thing he lacked vocal presence cuz he didnt have the whole team behind him and i dont think they were mixing snoops vocals right.

kurupt should have just released the west coast side of the album and tweeked it some more. doggfather is a banger I slid that album in the whip the other day and it still sounds dope. #DamnIMissThoseDeathRowDays

yup, DJ Pooh really came through as you said, the problem was with the mixing, but damn Up Jump Tha Boogie, The Vaporz, Snoops Upside Ya Head all produced by Pooh are banging.

I know it's not the consensus but Snoops Upside Ya Head is really a banger to me, It gives What's My Name a run for its money. Charlie Wilson's bridge is the cherry on the cake. Snoop's verses are really nice even though once again the vocals are a bit too low. Is Snoop sneak dissing Pac at the beginning of the second verse btw ?

Yep, Upside Ya Head is really good joint, but Vapors? Cmon, this shouldnt be on album, but they make this a single.

the vapors remix was cool the original left me dissapointed they hardly did anything to the original beat i was expecting like what they did with lodi dodi and they recreated a hip hop classic the vapors shouldn't have been a single and although snoop upside your head felt week upon release if you play that shit now the energy feels good. there was a lot of hype surrounding this album that i think kind of dilluted alot of ppls opinions of that album at the beggining. vapors for me is a low point on the album...me and my doggs is a banger as is doggy land.

what are we bitching about again? weve verified that 80 percent of that album  or more while not up to its potential was still doper then most shit that came out

bouli i thought it was a cautionary type of thing he was giving but being it came out after he died prolly makes it feel more serious.

it's funny cause i never cared for either me & my doggs and doggy land, and lord knows i've tried lol. but yeah the album is dope, but I can imagine it being doper having songs like Midnight Love, A Change Is Gonna Come, May I, Usual Suspects and Eastside Party on the final tracklist.

as for Vaporz, yeah it's not as good as Lodi Dodi, but idk I liked how Snoop bigged up his crew and I thought the video was good with Biz Markie doing a cameo, only Warren G was lacking.

snoop upside ya head felt a bit weak indeed but it's because of the muffled vocals I think, i was always mesmerized by the beat, and listening to it recently I think Snoop did well too.

Doggfather was a good choice as a single but I always thought Groupie could have fared well as a single.

teena marie and charlie wilson are credited for Up Jump the Boogie if i'm not mistaken (i'd have to check the liner notes), it was a slip up apparently they were featured on a Battlecat remix of the song or something along those lines someone talked about it on this very forum but can't remember who, would have been curious to hear that.

Snoop got totally outshined by Kurupt on Up Jump the Boogie, as he was on Gold Rush and before that on Smooth, lol.

PS:
Listenin to "Snoops Upside Ya Head" regularly lately, dope ass song. The verses are great, the beat is bangin and charlie wilson is way too funky on this. Only things that bothers me is that snoops voice and vocals sound a bit low. Is there anybody who could improve that and make a better version ?

same way I felt about "Kuruption!" when it came out in '98

"The Life" is the best Kurupt "solo" ( Kurupt albums )  song ever! (feat. El Drex!)

Listen to this a whole sunday afternoon..it's timeless!

i can't fully listen to each disc, i prefer Tha Streetz and even Space Boogie. Kurupt may not be in his prime lyrically but these two albums actually contain great entertaining songs that segue well. there are a few songs that I love on Kurupt but I just can't listen to each disc from front to back, too many fillers and boring tracks.

On the Ron Winter Productions release, the credits are a bit different if i remember correct. I used to have it some years ago.

EDIT: I was talkin' about "Tha Doggfather", in case somebody didn't get that.

Still waitin for that...

Speaking of Vapors, you notice the credits for the writing on that song? They got 3 fuckers on it lol. So each did a verse lol? To top it all, one dude is Big Daddy Kane and the other is Biz MArkie ha. That's hella strange!

you obviously don't know rap history my ese

Vapors was a 1985 song written by BDK and preformed by Biz Markie.  Snoop did a cover of the song just like Lodi Dodi was a cover of Slick Rick.

I'm taking about the lyrics for Snoops Version. That doesn't mean the credits should go to BDK or BIZ. That's why I said I was questioning the authenticity of the credits.

Snoop's version was 95% based on the one BDK wrote.  only the names were changed and a few minor things like "you out here servin stress" instead of "you work for UPS"

That doesn't mean the credits should go to them though lol. The credits make people believe that BDK wrote "Daz", "Dogg Pound" "Warren G" etc etc which he didn't. Plus, if BDK wrote the lyrics, why the fuck is Biz Markie on the credits? If this is how people get credit then I guess I just learned something new.

So you want BDK to get credit for Snoop naming Daz, Warren g and the Dogg Pound, while changing other words? Interesting...

By the way, don't ever say "My Ese" ha. The best way of saying it would be to just say "you obviously don't know rap history ese". Peeps going to think you're a wigger ha.

he is not on Vapors, Groupie and Blueberry according to those tracks...although he doesnt really rap in Blueberry I think that was a Dogg Pound/LBC Crew track

snoop didn't WRITE those songs.  that's why he didn't get credit for them.

On Vapors it's clear why the others are credited as writers, the track is a remake and there were just some minor changes to make it fit with snoops story. He is on the credits on the normal version tho, because although it's just a few new elements, he wrote them. Blueberry is obvious why, he isn't even rapping on the track and is just talking at the end, thats not really song writing, more like randomly chilling in the studio and talking on the mic. Groupie, i noticed that too, but this has to be a mistake, his verse is 100% written by himself, it clearly sounds like his writing.

Snoop is credited on the OG pressing of Doggfather on Vapors....the only tracks he is not credited on is Groupie, Downtown Assassins and 2001

It is probably his 2nd best studio album yes. But it's not a 'great album' IMO

In any case Smokefest Underground is his next best project to Doggystyle. Tho I don't know what you'd class that as. Street Album??
