T.I. Debuts “No Mediocre” Video And Previews Album Snippets At Movie Theater Listening

Jun 18th, '14  •  Music  •  by Miranda J.

For some time now T.I. has been teasing fans with little tidbits of information pertaining to his ninth studio album, Paperwork: The Motion Picture. Last night, T.I. finally gave an in-depth look at the project in a celeb-filled private screening at the School Of Visual Arts in NYC.

Lil Duval hosted the event, and T.I. first kicked things off by explaining everything there is to know about his upcoming project, which is slated for September. From his recent switch of labels from Atlantic Records to Columbia Records, working with executive producer Pharrell and the theatrical theme of the album; viewers became privy to little details about the effort that were unknown before.

During the chat with Duval, Tip recounted past events that made him the artist he is today. He told the crowd that when he was just getting started in the game, Pharrell waived fees for studio sessions that T.I. couldn’t afford. He also mentioned how P calling T.I. the Jay Z of the South put pressure on Tip to rise to the occasion. Then, T.I. and Duval, acting like a comedic duo, moved on to former Grand Hustle affiliate Iggy Azalea, where Tip told the story of how they met and how a spark in Iggy’s eye and her confident demeanor let him know that mentoring her would be the right move.

T.I. went on to preview six tracks from Paperwork and said that the “cohesive thing that brings the record together is soul.” Each of the songs have “purpose” and a “sense of music.” He set it off with the previously released “About The Money” featuring Young Thug. Before playing the slow-tempo club banger, T.I. gave a little background on how he connected with Thugger, saying he felt a kinship with him because they hail from the same way of life, so their musical connection was undeniable.

After playing that, T.I. moved on to a self-explanatory track called “I’m A King.” Produced by Mars of 1500 or Nothin’, the track follows the usual T.I. fashion, filled with hard-hitting bars about the lifestyle he maintains. Another song Tip unveiled was the Pharrell-assisted title track. The effort combines his straight-laced style with Skateboard P’s left-field approach of capturing a Curtis Mayfield feel. Later on, he got into “G Shit,” which is set to feature Jeezy, Watch The Duck and more unique production by P. To wrap up his string of snippets, Tip showed the audience the Tommy Brown-produced “New National Anthem” that pays homage to our nation’s historic tune. The track addresses many of the hardships found in impoverished neighborhoods, with a hook that will surely get people talking about it. “Land of the beautiful, home of the shotgun/You ain’t dead if you ain’t got one,” Tip spits.

Tip left us with the video premiere of his upcoming single, “No Mediocre,” featuring Iggy Azalea. He gave us a first look of the video set in Brazil that aims to encourage women to continually present themselves in the upmost manner. All in all, Tip’s screening was quite an event from the intimate movie theater setting to the hilarious banter between the rapper and Lil Duval. With a mix of an animated T.I. and plenty of new sounds, this may just be his best work yet. And with more certainly to be discovered about Paperwork, rap fans can be assured that T.I.’s new album is in good hands. - XXLMAG

And give my opinion if it's good or bad...as I would any artists.

I would have posted his shitty single whether you fanboys were here or not. It's a forum...gotta generate conversation.

You keep forums alive by talking about what is relevant. T.I. getting progressively worse and worse with an unanticipated album coming out is relevant.

Just like you posted about Budden's battle. That's relevant news that has to get posted.

don't worry paperwork will be a classic

it's already been established and reinstated that won't be the case... anything with Young Thug's name on it and a trash Iggy Azalea record also included can't ever be classic and that's not matter of opinion that's just simple fact and rule of rap, any real hip-hop head would feel the same

I hope the rest of his album don't sound like those songs but I don't know it ain't looking good for TIP

what y'all don't understand is I'm a t.i. fan, he's one of my favorite emcees. I love his new records and his album gonna be another classic. I don't listen to gucci mane or wayne and I don't spend time makin' threads about them and jeezy is okay. 'no mediocre' is servin' it's purpose right no and I'm good wit that.

Logic and Budden could rap circles around T.I. without trying man. It's really pathetic if you can't see that in 2014. But just goes to show how one dimensional your musical taste is. Opinions like yours prove you have a short list of rappers you listen too.

LOL @ you thinkin' logic and hoe budden is competition for t.i. I love underground hip hop like anyone but those two are very very low on the list and budden been fell off.

Dude, T.I. hasn't had bars worth talking about in over five years. He sounds more repetitive from song to song with the same subject matter and constantly talking about how "tough" he is than you do on here. All he really has to his name are bangers that really go...thanks to production teams.

Logic, Budden and a strong majoirty of Hip Hop would rap circles around Cliff.

Its simple as hell. We like artists like TIs, Cormegas, Black Thoughts because they speak for young black men and what we go thru in our lives and what we face. You guys like Eminems n Necros n French Montanas cuz they speak for young white boys about complete utter nonsense that holds no real value towards life because youre white. Yall face no obstacles or trials shit success is basically handed to y'all. Understand. Shit Tip says right in the song:

How many times has this happened to you, What the fuck you know about being a black man in america? So guys answer that for me what the fuck you just started listenin to our music in 2000 whiteboys know about being black men in america? If you cant answer the question get off our dicks.

On Tuesday August, 12th at an Invite-Only event held at Simons Nightclub in Downtown Gainesville LouddMagazine in conjunction with Aviators Design Studio, and many more entities, had the pleasure and opportunity to get a sneak listen to T.I.’s new album Paperwork: The Motion Picture.

Dubbed “The King of the South”, T.I. both entertained and enticed us with 8 exclusive tracks from his new album, and let us be the first to tell you this album will be worth the short wait as it is set to be released in mid-September. This marks the beginning of a new era for the Atlanta born rapper, who recently cut ties with Atlantic Records. This new album will be produced under Columbia Records with Pharrell signed on to be Executive Producer.

We had the chance to have a brief Q&A session with the rapper, and from the experience it’s clear to see that this man is nothing short of genuine a humble man with a heart for his family and the people who helped him to stardom, his fans. He spoke with us about what went into making this project, and how he created a timeless album that had a great amount of soul.

The headbanger track, ‘G-Sh**’, the title track ‘Paperwork’, and the smooth and gritty sounds of ‘About my Issues’ exemplify that this project is sure to be just what he set out for it to become, simply a classic. He also kept in line with what we have grown to love from him, which is hardcore, unrelenting, lyricism the track ‘King’ conveys that “The King” still wears that crown and it hasn’t faltered one bit.

Unquestionably the track ‘New National Anthem’ hits to the heart, it expresses the angst that we are facing right now with the social unrest going on around the nation. When questioned about what inspired this track he stated, “Certain things need to be said, and I’m the only one who will talk about it, so I did”. Unapologetically raw and politically charged, this song will get you into action.

The album also has a few featured artists from Young Jeezy, Nipsey Hustle, Chris Brown, and a local group from Atlanta called ‘Watch the Duck’ (check out their video below) T.I. did not leave us with any doubt that his ninth album will be true to “The King of the South”

He also got candid with the listeners and spoke about the artist’s he’d love to work with in the future like, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Sade and Prince to name a few. He also talked about his motivations for signing Iggy Azalea to his Grand Hustle label, and he says that no one else was going against the grain, that’s what he wanted to achieve by signing the Australian-born rapper.

T.I. shares sneak peek of ‘Paperwork’ in STL, talks police violence with ‘New National Anthem’

“Home of the brave and free…free just to murder me,” pop singer Skylar Grey croons on the hook of rap star T.I.’s “New National Anthem.” “Land of the beautiful, cursed by the hate we throw.”

Even for a rapper who made a name for himself through music that chronicled his hustler days on the streets of Atlanta, the song is easily his most politically charged and controversial to date.

T.I. made a visit to St. Louis Monday night, where he spoke with Hot 104.1 FM afternoon personality A-Plus about the release of his ninth studio album “Paperwork.”

But a major item on the agenda was the subject matter of the album’s third single – which rings loud and clear in the wake of the Michael Brown tragedy.

“Land of the handgun, home of the shotgun – you dead if you ain’t got one,” T.I. comes behind Grey’s vocals.

“Man, officer, what I do? Don’t shoot, I live over there,” T.I. says on the record in between his verses. “What the [expletive] y’all know about being a black man in America?”

One might assume it was written in response to Brown’s tragic death at the hands of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on August 9.

Through his chat with A-Plus, the select group invited to the Marquee to give “Paper Work” an advance listen learned otherwise:

“Although the inspiration to release it was because of the untimely tragedy of Michael Brown, the song was written back when Trayvon Martin’s situation was taking place,” T.I. told A-Plus. “And I don’t KNOW whether to call it fate or destiny or tragedy or what – but as time rolled around history has repeated itself, unfortunately, and now I’m the position where I was like ‘people need to hear this.’”

Collective head shakes and “mmm” rang through the crowd as he gave insight as to why the song – which is a stark contrast to the club bangers and trap music that come together in “Paperwork” – made its way onto the album.

“I was like ‘you need to put this out, people need to hear this,’” T.I. said.

The single was a free download before it was added to “Paperwork,” which hits the streets on October 21.

“It’s not about money. It’s not about selling records. This is just a message I feel that can’t nobody do but me and ain’t nobody doing but me and we needed to put it out,” T.I. said.

“I didn’t have no ulterior motive. It’s not for sale. I just really wanted to inspire people and give them something to think about. Sometimes if you don’t have another piece of insight or voice of reason – and nobody’s giving you nothing else positive or inspirational to think on – all you’ll do is act on your natural instincts.”

Making a new classic:

T.I. also spent plenty of time speaking on “Paperwork” as a whole and how he flipped the script on his original concept to take his first album for Columbia Records.

“The music kinda switched a little bit,” T.I. said. “I switched labels and it just felt like I was heading in a different direction with a different tone and a different vibe – and I didn’t want to bring old [expletive] to a new situation.”

“Paperwork” showcases features with hip-hop’s newest It girl Iggy Azealia, Boosie and Chris Brown, to name a few. Based on the songs he played for the audience – which included “Jet Fuel,” “King” “G [expletive]” and “Private Show” – “Paperwork” still manages to echo classic T.I.

He confessed that “Paperwork” was his attempt to raise his own personal bar.

“I feel like ‘Paper Trail’ has been hailed as one of my most creative or most diverse albums, so if I’m stepping into a new situation, I’m gonna try and knock out the best [expletive] I‘ve ever done so far,” T.I. said. “That was my intention and creatively, just from the standpoint of satisfying the demographic of fans that started out buying albums even before ‘Paper Trail.’”

He also spoke on his continued creative partnership with Pharrell – which continued on “Paperwork” and began long before Pharrell became an international sensation with his feel-good hit “Happy” – back when T.I. was one of many rappers on the ATL leg of the Dirty South hip-hip scene trying to make a name for himself.

“The very first record I put out was with Pharrell. My very first trip to the studio, Pharrell was there,” T.I. said. “And I’ve always been taught that you’ve got to rock with who rocks with you. Whoever makes themselves available – whoever dedicated the time, effort and energy into my life passion – I have to give them the same opportunity

I agree. Pretty much what he did on his last album.

But now I can see Dre stamping this upcoming one. And Eminem giving him a feature (which I don't even want) that will boost sales even more.

doesn't matter if T.I. was solo for the whole album or had a bunch of features, Kendrick is more relevant and prevalent in the game right now plus he's been dropping far superior music than Tip's been doing for the past 5 years

it's not like those 2 are competing with one another or they're in the same lane but if they had a battle like Kanye/50 for sales then KDot would without question come out victorious and that's not even opinionated that's just actual facts of the situation

LMFAO!!! "NEW ALBUM COULD GO PLATINUM".

If it sells less than 750K a year from it's release you gotta post your pic. That's 250K less than your "intelligent" opinion.
if it goes gold or platinum in that time frame you have to bring your mother to new jersey so she can give head while you videotape it.

Your sig. sums up both words. Pharrell is relevant, who was part of multiple #1 singles in the world of music and T.I. is irrelevant, who turned to a Australian pop star (who is relevant) to just barely crack a top ten list filled with songs that came out months ago.

i know most of y'all are borderline trolling with this TI back and forth just to piss CM off but let's not forget TI was on Blurred Lines not too long ago. he's not in his prime comercially speaking like he used to be but he's still viable. Troublehead (decent album) didn't make much noise and it still went gold within a year. but yeah it's not as good as Jeezy who went gold within a month with TM103 and had a gold single last year with RIP or Ross who also went gold within a month with GFID but i could still see it sell like 300k minimum. I doubt it will go gold that easy though.

I don't troll T.I. or any posters on here, the fact of the matter is that TIP sold his soul, fell off, and he's doing too much too late to try to appear believable in his raps again

Trouble Man was a decent album but dude has not dropped a remarkable project since Paper Trail, Jeezy, Ross, Gucci been owning the trap music lane and dudes just need to accept that

and how dudes put him with Cormega in the same pocket astounds me, Mega is against the industry while TIP is for it... ass backwards groupies lol give those pom poms a rest

all those names I dropped are Project Pat's sons, you can really sit there with a straight face and sincerely say that "No Mediocre" and "All About The Money" are hot but that new Ross joint isn't?  :-[

T.I. had his peak from 2006-2009 and since then he's been inconsistent, he'll drop an "I'm Back" banger but follow up with a shitbag of an album (No Mercy) that doesn't even have the few good songs he made on it, his mixtapes he put out in between were just compilations of shitty songs that didn't make his albums

Trouble Man had it's moments but overall it can't hold a candle to his better albums... Ross been staying consistent if not improving with every release and his mixtapes shit on most peoples' albums if we're talking mainstream/trappers

i have yet to listen to Mastermind but God Forgives I Don't had some of the hottest production in 2012 : Sixteen, Amsterdam, Rich Forever, Three Kings, Maybach Music IV, Diced Pineapples all knock and Ross, without being mind-blowing, did his thing on all of these joints. His delivery is actually very nice. I mean I understand you can't stand somebody comparing any MC to TI but not saying Ross was at least decent on these joints sounds like sheer haterism to me.

I can understand not fucking with Ross for his fakeness but music wise he's good at what he does and has a very good beat selection. That's something that deserves to be praised in this day and age.

I know how to rile these prags up. all I gotta do is make a t.i. thread and they come runnin' to me like the obedient puppies they are. classic material a.k.a the puppet master.

aye, nothing in here got me riled up this shit is all laughs for me lol of course when this album comes out I'm going to still listen to it with an open mind (unlike some heads) and still leave my sincere opinion of what I hear, if I end up liking it I'll be man enough to admit that and if it's garbage (more than likely to be) I'm calling a spade a spade

but like Bananas said, chill on all the TIP riding for a bit and go post about Jamla or The Roots  8)
y'all wiggers are silly to me. I think you need to get your home under control first before you talk about who's music I post about. no one is stealin' shit any shit of mines I don't play those games.

1. King - wow, another song with this title  ::)
2. G Shit (feat. Jeezy & WatchTheDuck) - this might be decent because of Jeezy
3. About the Money (feat. Young Thug) - certified trash/fuckboy music
4. New National Anthem (feat. Skylar Grey) - generic, wannabe Eminem/Slaughterhouse bullshit
5. Oh Yeah (feat. Pharrell) - will be hit or miss
6. Private Show (feat. Chris Brown) - most likely more sappy pop garbage
7. No Mediocre (feat. Iggy Azalea) - a musical abomination
8. Jet Fuel (feat. Lil Boosie) - this should be pretty good
9. Paperwork (feat. Pharrell) - will be hit or miss
10. Stay (feat. Victoria Monet) - not bad but not good either
11. About My Issue (feat. Victoria Monet & Nipsey Hussle) - I'm sure Nipsey will save this one
12. At Ya Own Risk (feat. Usher) - might be alright if Usher gets on his old steez and not his house-music ish
13. On Doe, On Phil (feat. Trae The Truth) - sounds good
14. Light Em Up (RIP Doe B) (feat. Pharrell & WatchTheDuck) - hope this is a good tribute to Doe B
15. Let Your Heart Go (Break My Soul) (feat. The-Dream) - probably going to be trash because of Dream
16. Sugar Cane - don't know what to expect from the title but it sounds pretty gay
17. I Don’t Know - me neither
18. You Can Tell How I Walk (feat. Rick Ross) - hopefully will be better than that "Pledge" song they did

this looks like it's going to be his second or third worst album, definitely isn't looking promising "on paper" at all, see what I did there?

in all actuality we shouldn't even be mentioning those albums in here lol

when this album drops the only big two it can be compared to of the year is Jeezy and Ross since they're all in the same lane so we'll see how it goes, I'm guessing both of theirs will be superior though based off the tracklist

(AllHipHop News) On October 21, Atlanta rapper T.I. will release his 9th studio album Paperwork. Tip hooked up with his “Blurred Lines” collaborator Pharrell Williams to executive produce his latest project. The Grand Hustle leader feels his work with Skateboard P will result in an amazing musical combination.

“Aside from DJ Toomp, it’s the first time I’ve allowed a producer to come in and kind of shape my sound as he saw fit,” states T.I. “You must find ways to reinvent yourself in order to remain relevant. And who better to help me than someone as passionate and talented as Pharrell? He found a way to bring a colorful, left-field approach to my blue-collar celebrity. Between his wings and my anchor, we balance each other out. That duality is what makes this project unique.”

Tip also tapped Toomp, Timbaland, and DJ Mustard for production. High profile artists including Jeezy, Iggy Azalea, Chris Brown, Boosie, Usher, Rick Ross, Skylar Grey and The-Dream make appearances on the set. Pharrell is a featured artist on three tracks as well.

“When I first sat down with Pharrell, he told me to think ‘out of the stratosphere,’” adds Tip. “What solidifies the resulting Paperwork is a unique blend of refreshing yet timeless material. As Pharrell would put it, we’re trying to rewrite history.”

T.I’s Paperwork  is available for pre-order on iTunes. The album features the singles “No Mediocre” with Azalea and “About The Money” with Young Thug.

All of this is very subjective

However in my opinion, if you have any sense of literary comprehension, as well as an appreciation for flow, delivery etc, then to compare TI to Jeezy or to Rick Ross is like saying that Fox News offers a more balanced and insightful view than 60 minutes.
As for remarking that TI's subject matter is the same but to then offer credit to that wannabe fake Ricky Ross for regurgitating bullshit is to deliberately ignore the bullshit and it's called Mayback Music, because let's face it, it really is about the beats.
As for Jeezy....oh come on now, it's just ignorant drug dealer type bullshit lyrics lacking any insight, wit, creativity, just cliche after cliche.

That said I am not a big fan of TI and like many rappers he is largely hyped up by his fans

In my opinion he doesn't come close to Black Thought or Eminem or Jay-Z etc but everybody has to draw the line somewhere and to compare him unfavourably to Jeezy, Rick Ross, Gunplay etc is where I draw mine and suggest that people start giving more attention

I think by far his best album is Paper Trail by the way, but again, not a big fan of his, it's all opinion but there is mine.
Jeezy....Alliteration adlibs and oh you know he from the street a drug dealers rappers and I give a shit about that when he lacks talent because...?
Rick Ross The larger than most people, fake gangster who served time you know working for the government, who knows Noreaga, but well, doesn't know him but knows of people that were close by him in proximity within the same jail as him, known for that music you can bump in your car and.....hmmm i am not going to say his great lyricism so I don't know, whatever your ears like I suppose.

the truth hurts huh  :D
2pac albums will have replay value for many more generations to come
yet i don't know if you have a son or not but if you do i hardy doubt hes going to be listing to ti  :D his music will quickly be forgotten just like most of his generation

if u going to use a example from 2pac albums for ti
pacs life and loyal to the game is more a better fit for ti :D and even those pac tracks are better then anything ti can come up with

T.I. at his most generic. You can literally substitute 95% of his verses about being a "young nigga struggling in the hood" (which is about 85% of his non-diverse catalogue) and get the same exact song.

Plus it makes Repeat Material look like an ultimate hypocrite because T.I. stole Eminem's formula...something he criticizes Eminem for lol.

Don't waste space on your computer. Downloading it would be the equivalent of saying "oh look, a new Taylor Swift album...lemme peep that".

Last night, Columbia Records held a small and intimate listening party for T.I.’s upcoming 9th studio album, Paperwork: The Motion Picture at their offices in midtown Manhattan. Though Tip himself couldn’t make it—he called in on a conference call during the session and said he was tied up filming a movie that was taking longer than expected—his new label (after a decade signed to Atlantic) did show a video that T.I. filmed where he broke down the four singles that had been previously released. While the guests sat around a conference table taking in drinks named after some of the tracks on his album—”G’Shit” was a Jack and coke, “No Mediocre” a vodka cranberry concoction and “About The Money” a vodka orange juice—Tip explained how singles “Paperwork,” “New National Anthem,” “About The Money” and “No Mediocre” came about.

“['New National Anthem'] spoke to me in a way where I said, man, I should probably put this out,” T.I. said about the Skylar Grey-assisted track, which he said he wrote over a year ago around the time the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin verdict was announced. “People need to hear this now.” He also explained his relationship with Young Thug, saying that he knew Thugger from things around the city outside of music but decided to collaborate with him after the success of “Stoner” and “Danny Glover” began to prove that Thug wasn’t messing around when it came to music. The two apparently have another 12 or 13 records in the bank in addition to “About The Money.”

The label played the entire 18-track deluxe version of Paperwork as well, which is very feature-heavy—only three of the tracks are solo T.I. songs, and two of those are deluxe bonus cuts—and there are plenty of standout moments. ”G’Shit,” featuring Jeezy and Watch The Duck, is an old-school, off kilter country swamp banger that drips with the type of swag that you could hear Big Boi rhyme over if he was ridin’ dirty through ATL without a care in the world. ”Jet Fuel” with Lil Boosie leans more towards the darker side of Southern trap and Boosie couldn’t sound more at home. Badazz was emotional and vulnerable on his verse on Jeezy’s “Beez Like,” but he gets sinister and calculating on the Paperwork track. Nipsey Hu$$le delivers a standout verse on “About My Issue,” though the Usher-assisted “At Ya Own Risk” may have been a better fit, production-wise, for his brand of L.A. rap. And two of the album’s later cuts, “On Doe, On Phil” featuring Trae Tha Truth and “Light ‘Em Up” featuring Pharrell and Watch The Duck are meditations on friends lost to the game, with a particularly gutting spoken-word section about the night Doe B died dividing the tracks.

Paperwork drops next week on Oct. 21, but it’s streaming now on iTunes right here. —Dan Rys

gave it one full listen and here are my pure unadulterated unbiased high thoughts:

1. King - 4/5, good opener but not as good as previous ones, he sounds focused
2. G Sh*t (feat. Jeezy & WatchTheDuck) - 3.5/5, beat is dope I imagined Clipse on it being more epic, hook was kinda weak on the low but not terrible, Jeezy was a good fit for the song
3. About the Money (feat. Young Thug) - 2/5, production grew on me over time but Young Thug was sewage on this, shame on TIP for giving this dude light, he wasn't much better than him on it either
4. New National Anthem (feat. Skylar Grey) - 2/5, I get it that he wanted to go for a positive message but this sounds like some Recovery/Lasers bullshit overall
5. Oh Yeah (feat. Pharrell) - 4/5, I rock with it
6. Private Show (feat. Chris Brown), 2.5/5, I was a little generous rating just because of the sample but this is a dud
7. No Mediocre (feat. Iggy Azalea) - 2/5, YG or Ty$ should have gotten this beat, shit's trash
8. Jet Fuel (feat. Lil Boosie) - 4/5, this is hard... Boosie ate this track
9. Paperwork (feat. Pharrell) - 3/5, it's smooth but there's something off about it and I don't know if it's T.I.'s flow or the beat or both, it could grow on me over time
10. Stay (feat. Victoria Monet) - 2/5, sap music
11. About My Issue (feat. Victoria Monet & Nipsey Hussle) - 4.5/5, now this sounds like some throwback TIP, Nipsey murdered it and the hook was nice
12. At Ya Own Risk (feat. Usher) - 3/5, probably the only decent chick song on here so far, it gets a pass
13. On Doe, On Phil (feat. Trae The Truth) - 4.5/5, this one's crazy I can't front, Trae goes off on his old shit  :o
14. Light Em Up (RIP Doe B) (feat. Pharrell & WatchTheDuck) - 4/5, it was only right he gave Doe B his tribute
15. Let Your Heart Go (Break My Soul) (feat. The-Dream) - 2.5/5, not a fan of The-Dream, production was too poppy for the subject matter
16. Sugar Cane - 3/5, not bad but not that good either
17. I Don’t Know - 4/5, another one that sounds like Trap Muzik ish, wouldn't be surprised if this was older from the stash
18. You Can Tell How I Walk (feat. Rick Ross) - - 3.5/5, one of their better collaborations but Ross got over on him again, this one was catchy

does have a few solid jams but all together this album flows terribly all over the place and doesn't stay on track especially from 3-10

Paper Trail had some pop-ish tracks but it was cohesive and structured properly, this one lacks direction all together plus he could have easily swiped some of the songs from the Hustle Gang tape to replace the shitty joints on here and made this almost worth purchasing, but then it would still sound like a T.I. compilation either way

Trap Muzik > Paper Trail > King > Trouble Man > Urban Legend > T.I. vs T.I.P. > Paperwork > I'm Serious > No Mercy

gave it one full listen and here are my pure unadulterated unbiased high thoughts:

I fuck with this. Pretty damn accurate.

Second listen it isn't as bad as I first thought still some average music but also some decent tracks. Not his worst and but nowhere near his best album. The middle of the album lets it down.

Fave Tracks -

King
Oh Yeah Ft. Pharrell
Jet Fuel Ft. Boosie
One Doe, On Phil Ft. Trae
Light Em Up Ft. Watchtheduck & Pharrell
Let Your Heart Go Ft. Dream

Was gonna drop a more detailed analysis of tracks but theres little point because they're all pretty similar, so I'll describe the album.  :D

On the positive virtually every track could be a hit/radio single. This is very contemporary album. That sort of pop/R&B/hiphop mix everybody aims for. The producers lay down a hot beat, T.I. does his thing. Stick a hook on it and bingo, on to the next one. Paperwork loaded with decent tracks, problem is (for me) is the lack of anything standout.

Where as Trouble Man was a decent album laced with a few really strong and memorable tracks, Paperwork really does sound like the same type of song over and over. Nothing really stands out and although I listened back 2 back, I'll be honest and say I got bored of the album halfway in. Here's my track scores:

1 King 6.5
2 G Shit 6.5
3 About the Money 6.5
4 New National Anthem 6.5
5 Oh Yeah 6.5
6 Private Show 6.5
7 No Mediocre 6.5
8 Jet Fuel 6
9. Paperwork 6.5
10. Stay 6.5
11. About My Issue 6.5
12. At Ya’ Own Risk 6.5
13. On Doe, On Phil 6.5
14. Light Em Up 6.5
15. Let Your Heart Go 6.5
16. Sugar Cane 6.5
17. I Don’t Know 6.5
18. You Can Tell How I Walk 5.5

Looking at these scores you'd say it was an easy 6.5/10 (a decent album) but the lack of variety on there spoils the listening experience..so I'm calling it a 6/10. 'Good' but no better.

as I sat and listened closely to this phenomenal body of work and got a hq version of it, I've concluded that an authentic review is necessary.

''king'' sets off the album wit t.i. goin' ham on the soulful sampled production of mars (1500 or nothin') lettin' muthafuckas know who still wear the crown. video for this joint comin' soon btw. - 10/10

''g shit'' is more of that slick gangsta shit that only the king can bring over some clean ass production from pharrell while jeezy drops a verse hard as nails. watch the duck delivers a fantastic hook I wouldn't mind hearin' them and t.i. work together on the next album either. one of my faves off this masterpiece. - 10/10

''about the money'' is another banger. London on the track laces tip wit a futuristic soundscape to flex on while young thug mumble some jibberish and still pulls it off. - 10/10

''new national anthem'' is a much needed record and it while it may ruffle some feathers it's still a necessary message indeed. skylar's vocals and tommy brown's production are incredible on this. - 10/10

''oh yeah'' is another banger from t.i. and pharrell (the second out of four). t.i. is lyrically givin' out an ass whoopin' on this one and pharrell provides a dope ass hook. classic t.i. at his best. - 10/10

''private show'' is tip talkin' to the ladies over a warm soothin' sak pase concoction. this is the type of shit you play when you got you a lil pyt in the whip and ready roll somethin' and bust her ass. chris brown also delivers on the hook. -10/10

''no mediocre'' is a radio banger featurin' iggy and production from dj mustard. t.i. straight flexin' on this. at first I didn't really like the record but I do now. I must say it flows and doesn't disturb the album. - 10/10

''jet fuel'' is sooo jammin'. keNoe gave tip a monster to go ape shit on and boosie drops a dope verse too...I wouldn't mind seein' some bitches twerk and shake to this while blowin' that jet fuel. - 10/10

''paperwork'' flips underrated southern group ghetto mafia's for the good times. t.i. weaves a story about his childhood in the streets over pharrell's smooth and soulful creation. pharrell also provides the hook...dope record. - 10/10

on ''stay'' t.i. professes his love for his lady and addresses their issues and victoria monet blesses the hook on this smooth soulful joy ride provided by tommy brown. - 10/10

''about my issues'' is absolute flames. t.i. drops two stellar verses and nipsey drops one as well while victoria serenades to the highest power on this fly composition from dj toomp. - 10/10

''at ya own risk'' brings two atl legends together once again for another epic collabo. over mars futuristic production t.i. and usher deliver a banger for the ladies. sounds like a hit. - 10/10

''on doe, on phil'' features t.i. and trae layin' down the law on this spaced out dj toomp track. gotta say I was skeptical on trae bein' on the album but he removed all doubt. - 10/10

''light 'em up'' documents t.i. and doe's friendship and it's very well written. a very heartfelt tribute and a powerful record. watch the duck brings the dope hook and pharrell lends some left field production on this. - 10/10

''let your heart go (break my soul)'' closes the album appropriately. a emotional record that find t.i. talkin' to his deceased cousin lookin' back and reflectin' over a pristine dream and 'tricky' creation. I love this record too. - 10/10

overall: this album is not suited for the young and dumb generation. it's a refreshing album and it is t.i. at his best full of soul, heart, and grit. this is one of the best albums to drop this year and one of the most important.

he's far from overrated and overhyped. one of the few emcees in hip hop who won without a co sign or push from a big name(outside of pharrell or dj toomp). the same argument could be made about eiht.

one of the many shinin' moments on the album. I don't know homie there's a lot of people who love the record(me included). the lyrics are on point, the production is incredible, and the concept of the album is dope: all the things I check for when I listen to and buy a t.i. album. as a longtime fan of the king that album jams like a muthafucka.
