Title: Can anyone recommend good conscious rap 4 me to purchase?
Post by: Ebenus Supremus on June 09, 2015, 04:57:50 PM
I'm detoxing from gangsta rap.... I'm not as concerned about the content as I am about artists profiting from that which is detrimental to they communities... In concern to the term conscious, I mean inspiring lyrics about overcoming hardship and defeating the negatives in our communities.... I realise these kind of themes can be found in gangsta rap but I don't wanna listen to dickheads talking bout fuckin bitches, getting high, killing each other or reppin they set.... Again, these themes can be found in conscious rap, but they are generally reffered to as a negative that needs to be overcome rather than exploited....
I know a few artists from the 90's but I'm not very familiar with current or newer artists....
Please provide links so I can try before I buy!!!
Sincerely, Ebenus Supremus....

And Sccit, if you rep that wack ass lamb shit too me, I'm gon reach across the pacific ocean n bitch slap you!!!

you mean artists with a positive / uplifting message ? idk the term "conscious rap" is a bit misleading...

as far as artists with a positive message, outside of the biggest names I don't know, I'll just drop a short selection of my favorite "positive" / conscious songs (might come from gangsta rappers, though)

Thanx for the feedback...
I'm familiar with Talib n The Roots...
I also consider Rass Mass to be conscious...
Conscious is a term I use to describe lyrics that are empowering. They can have negative themes but if your really listening they're not degrading or maybe I should use the term disempowering... Gangsta rap can have have empowering elements also, just as cube was coined a political rapper in his early days n even the outlawz can have uplifting messages eg. Like a window, fork in the road...
I can get my hands on the roots latest album locally, but I'm gon cruise the net for artists I've never heard before so thanx for the suggestions...
The term conscious can be as arbitrary as the term Rastafarian... I hear rasta don't like that term n I know a lot of rappers wanna be versatile n not pigeon holed into a certain form....
Thanx again...

defeating the negatives in our communities....

whoa man, what do you mean OUR communities?

I mean yours, mine, theirs, ours...
Same elements that exist in the pj's n ghettos in the US, exist in the UK, Australia, Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indonesia....
What?
You think the playas n pimps in your hood be the only hustlers n gangstas in the world...
Everybody got they own flavor, but you can bet ya bottom dollsdollars, if it bout corruption, money, drugs, territory, power, anything corrupt, you gon find it in every community on earth... Bigger n smaller doses...
Now I'm not trying to compare, and I am hip to certain elements n prejudices that are prominent in the low income black communities of the US, but y'all don't own that shit, ya didn't even invent it. Ya might have elevated that shit, but those same prejudices exist in all low income communities, even some affluent...
Its all about the doses man...
Some get a big hit of that shit, to the point where its ever present in all facets of the community, and some muthafuckas keep they ass undercover n extort n intimidate on the sly...
You can manipulate any community if you got the know how....
Soon as white man declared it inhumane to exploit other races for profit ( but kept doing it ) he had everyone fuckin everyone including they own mother over for a slice of that apple pie...
No I was not reffering to your community as my community when I said our communities... I wouldn't even go there...
But don't pidgeon hole yourself, like the outlawz said, its chemical war, unleashed on the black n the poor...
They also said, been poets, its hard just being that. You know what's harder? Being black....
Wanna hip this square up kid?
Bring it on...
I'm always happy to learn, even if I don't agree...

I find the way you write and communicate on here extremely offensive.
We get it, you are portraying the stereotype of a low income black American despite being an Australian. Iggy Azaelia already does that.
Your mockery of black and urban culture isn't amusing, and if you haven't already, consider the idea that you may be a racist and in need of a serious attitude adjustment.
I'd like you to lose the poor black American vernacular, it holds people back in real life and is just plain insulting when an outsider uses it for entertainment.

I apologize sincerely if I have offended you mister, truly, that was not my intention...
And although you may not believe it, I can comprehend how one might find my occasional use of what is predominantly black, not necessarily low income, but definitely rap related, jargon, slang, vernacular, offensive...
I myself am embarrassed by those we sometimes ignorantly, through lack of respect in regards toward the root of the term, refer to as wigga...
Its an insult to thtoose who are conscious about language n history n only shows lack of respect for the same culture one is mimicking or trying to embody...
Aside from the fact that many whites who make this mistake try to defend their behaviour with a declaration of love n respect n admiration for black culture, I really shouldn't have to be told, as I am aware of the offensive nature of such practices ....
Not seeking forgiveness, your welcome to hold a grudge, merely acknowledging my faults and extending a well deserved apology...
Pardon me...
I am very sorry...
I will try not to do it again...

think what exactly ? my post didn't even shed light on what I think, I simply posted songs with either 1) an uplifting and empowering message or 2) a grim/realistic portrayal of a particular situation which can definitely be labeled conscious.

and you, sir, are a retard for failing to quote properly someone's post after all these years spent at various forums (among other reasons).

Bouli, I've been listening to some of your suggestions, and they are spot on as to what I was terming conscious...
I feel weird...
I don't know if its disrespectful for me to feel empowered by pro black art, as I know, its not directed at me in that context. Enlightening, maybe, but empowered?
I can, very minorly, but still to the extent that I am in absolute awe, identify with some of the themes I hear in gangsta rap, when the content is in relation to corruption, intimidation, drugs, extortion, retaliating against enemies, rising above prejudice n oppression....
Not to the extent or as deeply or exactly as those who have lived life experience within the culture itself, but more through lived experience of some of these practices within my own culture....
I don't wanna adhere to gangsta mentality, or street mentality, corrupt, exploitive, degrading or cold hearted mentalities that have us putting up brick walls that disable us ( us being whoever we are and where ever we come from ) from overcoming these negative influences impact apon out personal selves and the communities at large....
So then I jump ship, and I think, I don't agree with being a victim to these practices, so how can I encourage the continuation of themthem by funding the mentality mentality. Buying into the concept, through admiration of some elements n lack of experience and/ or knowledge of others, but finding some themes relatable n others unacceptable...
I love pro black literature, art, music, education, knowledge, but I know it is not put out there for my benefit...
I wanna support the or those cultures that I find righteous....
But I feel for the suburban or affluent man the same I feel for the kid who grew up in foster care... I don't wanna offend either of them...
There are so many levels n elements n concepts to rap, but even if I just quietly admire n try to expose myself to knowledge, I feel like I'm offending someone by not committing to their belief system....

I wanna put my money on someone's table, but I don't know who to choose...
Everyone got a valid argument....

Will look into purchasing some of the artists you suggested.... Thanx heaps for the input...

here's my all time top 10 conscious albums...

1.  Nas - Illmatic
2.  Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
3.  Ras Kass - Soul On Ice
4.  Xzibit - At the Speed of Light
5.  Xzibit - 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz
6.  Talib Kweli - Reflection Eternal (the one released in 2000)
7.  Mos Def and Talib Kweli - Black Star
8.  Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique
9.  Rakim - Paid In Full
10 Nas - God's Son

....I was judging this album on the "conscious vibe".   So, for example, Nas God's Son album or or Xzibit's 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz album are both better than Soul On Ice, but Soul On Ice is maybe more "conscious" so I gave it a higher grade.  Feel me?

I only had xzibit's man v's machine n wouldn't have termed him conscious...

Xzibit started off more like a conscious rapper in his earliest days, like his breakthrough single on At The Speed of Light "Papparazi" (calling out rappers who are only it for fortune and fame) and its follow up single "The Foundation" (guidance to his son) were both very conscious tracks.

Then on 40 Dayz and 40 Nights he has cuts like "Focus"—"Fast Friday straight to meditate and build hunger/ and focus/ on the days and times that approach us".

...After 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz he hooked up with Dre and Snoop to do "Bitch Please" and so the gangsta rap vibe started to influence his music more.  He started doing stuff like "Get Your Walk On" which was like a tribute to Crip walkin.  Restless may have been his best album but he was now making music that sounded more like gangsta rap and less like conscious hip-hop, same goes for Man vs. Machine.

btw... who is Brian?  What does my name say?  Does my name say Brian?  Has it ever said "Brian"?  Have I ever called myself "Brian" at the forum?  Unless your goal is to disrespect me, please call me Infinite or Abdul-Infinite.

Ebony, I recommend that you stop listening to all rap n rnb...
You couldn't possible relate to it and I know you dontvwanna be like Iggy so sit down, shut up n be told... You stupid lil so n so....

Thanx to everyone for recommending as this was a rap related question on a rap website but I will no longer listen to rap, maybe no earthly music at all...
Maybe I'll go back to writing poetry and try to steer clear of ebonics and write about something I'm passionate about and never recite it and never post any of it on the internet and just start my own art collection of my own poetry and be happy with that......
