Title: Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. [Discussion Thread]
Post by: Dogg Ly Dogg on April 11, 2017, 10:55:39 AM
(http://static.stereogum.com/uploads/2017/04/DAMN.-1491906019-640x640.jpg)

01 “BLOOD.”
02 “DNA.”
03 “YAH.”
04 “ELEMENT.”
05 “FEEL.”
06 “LOYALTY.” (Feat. Rihanna)
07 “PRIDE.”
08 “HUMBLE.”
09 “LUST.”
10 “LOVE.”
11 “XXX.” (Feat. U2)
12 “FEAR.”
13 “GOD.”
14 “DUCKWORTH.”

The cover art and the tracklist have just been announced earlier todat by K.Dot himself via his social media.
So it seems like a great concept by seeing each track titles unless he's forcing himself which I doubt considering the direction and quality of the first single HUMBLE.

So let's wait and see! The album arrives on friday and I hella hyped  8)

Pre-Ordered the physicals. When will this man make an album fully produced by DJ Quik and Dr. Dre, he's the only one who is able to do it.

How far has hip-hop fallen. If Snoop got Kobe to listen to their album ahead of time and then Kobe posted that online hours before the release, everyone here would have been going bananas. I will say I think those clips with LeBron listening to K Dot was genius marketing and I think Kenny is going to bangers on this album. I think critically it will be at most a 8/10 or 4/5, but it's going to move commercially.

speaking of Lebron, he posted on his story, a few months back, clips of him vibing to Spice 1, C-Bo and Brotha Lynch Hung. kinda dope even though I'm not big on basketball.

LeBron is a westcoast / bay fan, not very surprising since Akron has been big on westcoast rap for a while.

I waited to listen on Spotify. Will pick this up tomorrow. I think it's a pretty good album. I thought it was going to be just 4/5, but I give it 4.5/5. It's not TPAB, which I think is a straight masterpiece. And it's not GKMC, but it's got it's own thing, it's really, really, really good. I'm not a fan of his singing. I love FEAR., DNA., FEEL., but I am not a fan of GOD.

Pretty much done with the first spin. I think "To Pimp A Butterfly" is a better album.

Best songs off this is "Lust", "XXX" & "Fear".

Great album though.

DNA, Element, Feel, Duckworth, Lust are my favourites after 3 spins.

more tracks will grow on me.

i Like that he didn't stick with one style for his albums, every album is a different concept.

My Easter weekend soundtrack sorted.👏👏👏👏

I think this has huge replay value. The more I listen, it's just a good album. It's not the masterpiece TPAB is, but it doesn't have to be. It has solidified K Dot as the best rapper of the moment and it's not close. Now if only he killed Drake.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a second album on Sunday.  It seems just the sort of thing Kendrick and his team would do, plus the whole announcement and release of 'Damn.' has been quite unusual and it seems there's an element of mystery surrounding this album.

At least we don't have to wait long to find out if its true or not.

There's a fan theory out there that he's gonna drop another album on Easter.

He gets shot & dies on the album. Dropped on Good Friday, same day as Jesus. Jesus resurrected three days later on Easter.

Okay, top 5, I don't know. I have space for him. But if he releases an album on Easter, good GOD he's top 5 unquestioned.

As for the sample on FEAR., I know that he used the same beat on The Heart part 4. But I don't hear a 50 song.

Also, after a few listens, like all day at work, I realized something. Kendrick use to be HEAVY Christian. Then on Good Friday, he is calling himself Hebrew! I have family who have converted to Hebrew, especially my half black fam. So I wonder if he joined that movement that's been gaining steam lately. Interesting.

«I'm an Israelite, don't call me black no more!» -> A bible reference, and also a nod to "How much a dollar cost"..
Then on "Fear": «Until you come back to these commandments, we're gonna be in this place, we're gonna be under this curse. Because he said he's gonna punish us, the so-called Blacks, Hispanics, and Native American Indians, are the true children of Israel. We are the Israelites according to the Bible.»

What would a Dre track change? It's a dope album regardless. One of the things Dre likes about Kendrick is his in-house production so why take from that to make room for Dr. Dre tracks just for the sake of having them? Dre is his ceo all he has to do is put the album out, not produce. Enjoy it for what it is, it's dope!

So both Drake and LeBron are friends, and now K Dot gave LeBron a track to groove to online, and it turns out to be a Drake diss. LMFAO. Element is a straight Drake diss and K Dot had his own friend playing it online and LeBron never noticed. Wow. That's crazy.

I posted the stuff for the second album because it reminded me when 'Pac died and everyone was trying to say he was alive. LMAO. It was pretty cool to me. Kendrick right now has entered new heights I haven't seen in a long time with fan Standom. I ain't going to lie either, he's my favorite out today and I think his new album is a great album. I don't think this album will go down as a classic. But it's the album which K Dot out sold Drake! K Dot goes mainstream and crushes Drake, takes the crown and brings it to Compton. All while keeping his lyrical style and artistic integrity.

Mainstream? :eh:

Went gold in one week, had Rihanna, HUMBLE., more bangers, people saying how much they like it better than TPAB. Yeah, it's more mainstream with a more mainstream sound. With that said, it's like he did it right. He found out how to keep his voice and do mainstream songs. Like that was his point of the album, along with showing off his new Hebrew roots.

And he's about to push more units than More Life on his first week, he's expected to do 530/550k included 330k physical copies which would be huge if he tops Drake  :o

EDIT 1: Hitsdailydouble just announced 610k but usually those numbers aren't real even thought they're close

EDIT 2: Kendrick said he has more music to come, someone on Reddit found out he's credited on the upcoming Justice League soundtrack

In what I think is the weakest of his albums, (but one of the best in 2017), Kendrick made himself accessible to mainstream fans and sold more than he ever had and sold more than Drake. I don't think he dumb himself down, but rather he made the music more accessible to people. I am in awe how many people have ranked this above To Pimp A Butterfly. Now maybe because I love G-Funk, and Hip-Hop/Jazz, and complex lyrics, but to me, TPAB is the most complete rap album I've heard since College Dropout, if not Illmatic. Like it's a top 5 all-time greatest albums to me. But seeing the massive response to DAMN., I realize that Kendrick made this album for the masses. He put a huge complex issue like God, and being introspective all while making music people will dance to. In in a way, it's almost what I had wished rappers would do a long time ago. Even hearing him speak, it feels like TPAB was his own personal masterpiece that he wanted to do for him, and DAMN. is what he wanted to do for everyone else.
Title: Re: Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. [Discussion Thread]
Post by: Chamillitary Click on April 24, 2017, 06:36:57 PM
I'm still in debates which is better. TPAB is beyond classic to me as well. Right now I have TPAB a more complete album from beginning to end in terms of a conscious, continuous masterpiece. But DAMN has more replay value songs. Like you gotta listen TPAB front to back to really appreciate some of the songs for what they are. Where I can just close my eyes, point & press play on DAMN songs & bob my head to some greatness; (like you pointed out) more relatable. But there's still a story being told on DAMN too. You're right, it's more mass-friendly, but I feel like you're selling it a little short lyrically & slapping this "sellout"-ish sticker on it. You referenced College Dropout, it's way less mainstream than that & you still rank College Dropout incredibly high (it seems like).

It's hard to rank DAMN, TPAB & GKMC; all have their own sound & style. Completely different albums, but all classic in their own ways.

I think this one was more well rounded than TPAB, as much as I loved that album I didn't play it as much as GKMC because I couldn't pick and choose joints from that, had to let it play front to back if I was going to let it rock at all... I also had to be in the mood for it especially with some of the songs where he had all those effects on his vocals lol

to me this album is like a mash up of GKMC and TPAB and can be played in more settings which is why it's doing numbers right now appealing to an even bigger audience

it's real hard for me to rank his 3 major studio albums at the moment... it's gonna be months before I can call it and I've already bumped this in full about 4 times

I didn't even read this before I posted and that's pretty much where I stand now

I wouldn't say sell-out. Accessible is different than sell-out. Sell-out compromises both sound and lyrics all for sales, accessible still keeps the message all well keeping their lyrically integrity. If you read my stuff from a long time ago (more than likely not because it was almost 15 years ago) I really wanted artist to do this. I think that keeping lyrical integrity like K Dot did here, well putting them on more commercial beats should be what many lyricist do. So I'm all in favor of his direction. And yes, this has less commercial appeal than College Dropout, which I rank Dropout as a top 5 hip-hop album of this millennium.

I am just saying, I really love TPAB. To me, TPAB is a top 5 all time great album. It's a pure masterpiece. I have listened to it so much that I can pick songs out and put them in other playlist because I have grown attached to the songs. I might put it as a top 10 greatest in any genre album. It's that beyond classic to me. It made me rethink classic, which is why now, I hate the word classic. Because to put 60 to 100 other albums next to this album to me is blasphemy. I can write a whole 10 page paper on the genius of TPAB and still not get everything I want out. I might need 35 pages and at least 20 sourced materials.

So with that said, I think DAMN. is up there with more hip-hop classics. It's almost like It Was Written by Nas following Illmatic. IWW is a classic album, and it took years afterwards to realize that it's a classic in it's own right. The difference is that since kids today have short memories, they can see DAMN. for what it is now, because they put TPAB in the back of their minds and they are like, DAMN. is banging! This decade, you take out TPAB and then you have a top 5 hip-hop albums this decade. And as a hardcore Kanye West fan, I am willing to say this, DAMN. is better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy!  It's better than Watch the Throne, it's better than Take Care, It's better than Thank Me Later. It's a straight modern classic album. Looking at DAMN. for what it is, it's a great, great album that will be a true highlight of the modern era of today. Also, it is K Dot's highest selling album out the gate. Even with the leak on Thursday night... this still happened, "Even when my album leak, fans still buy it for proof." This is the album which we can all agree, K Dot is the undisputed king of hip-hop. He's outsold Drake, he still has HUGE critical acclaim ratings and if you want to call Kendrick fans Stan's, well the vase majority of Twitter and rap fans in general are K Dot Stans. Dude has taken over the game, and he has HUGE lasting power. He is like Jay, Nas, Snoop, he can keep making music until he's 40.

I sort of feel this way about the album too.  It's not as musically ambitious as his previous efforts, but where 'DAMN.' benefits is, like others have said, its replay value compared to Kendrick's other albums.

It feels like you can jump into listening to this album anytime, anywhere, and in a random sequence, whereas I felt with the others you have to sit down and take it all in front to back in one sitting.

There are a couple of so-so tracks on here though, which his other two major label albums didn't have in my opinion.

DJ Premier worked on songs for Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN.", but they didn't make the cut. :(

We are the Israelites according to the Bible.»

he wants to be chosen

You bought a physical? I did too. I actually like it better because they cut out the call from his Cousin Carl. The phone call connects to YAH., but I hate that it's just before FEAR., which is one of the best tracks on there.

Digital and Physical are different, the physical is shorter for the reason mentionned above

Leaving out the skit though made no sense. A physical can be up to 90 minutes. This was only 55minutes, they had 2 extra minutes to put the phone call in.

I would post it, but I don't want a YT violation.

But I guess there are a few other changes, very slight. The CD has Kid Capri opening LOVE., the digital is Kendrick with Capri just saying another World Premier, digital has a little more U2 than CD. I honestly like the CD better. But I guess the digital is suppose to be the final version that they made and the official one.

Yeah, I think on the stream U2 had an extra line or 2. CD version they didn't, so I rock my CD version.

I still hear HUMBLE. when I stream Power 106, and in Minnesota they treat Kendrick songs like a BIG deal. So I think the album has some staying power. I still don't call it a classic, but it's a damn solid album could be seen as a classic after a few years. It's not TPAB, as TPAB was a straight masterpiece from the first listen, which made it easier to elevated to classic status. But not every masterpiece is a classic and not every classic was an instead masterpiece at first.
