DJ Critical Hype’s ‘The DAMN. Chronic’ Mashes Up Kendrick Lamar’s Vocals & Dr. Dre’s Production
Ever wondered what “Nosetalgia” would sound like over N.W.A.’s “Dopeman” beat?
Dr. Dre has been a mentor to Kendrick Lamar since the early days of the Compton rapper’s career, and his cosign has gone a long way in helping Kendrick gain a foothold in hip-hop. Dre has even given Kendrick some rare guest features on songs like “Compton” and “The Recipe.” DJ Critical Hype decided to take their connection one step further today with the release of his The DAMN. Chronic mashup project, which blends Kendrick’s vocals with some of Dr. Dre’s most revered beats.
“Kendrick has so many flows, voices, and styles, plus Dre beats are really incredible, so I figured it would be dope,” DJ Critical Hype told Pigeons & Planes about creating the mixtape. “I was determined to make it work, but the truth is it wasn’t easy. A lot of the tempos actually didn’t mix well. It was a lot more work trying to find good mixes. I had to dig deep and make a capellas for about 60 to 70 Kendrick songs and try and find stuff I was happy with. I really wanted to mix ‘Look Out For Detox’ and ‘Money Trees,’ as well as a lot of album cuts off the DAMN. album. The problem is Dre doesn’t have many slower beats. I’m really happy with the results, though. All the hard work and dedication to this project paid off.”
He takes vocals from songs across Kendrick’s catalog, using more recent releases like “XXX.” and “How Much A Dollar Cost” as well as older cuts like “Poe Man’s Dreams (His Vice)” and “Average Joe.” Featured Dre beats include Eminem’s “My Name Is” and N.W.A’s “Dopeman.”
