I'd be curious to know why he goes to jail which the article lack to explain

He is going to jail because he was pulled over driving and they found a gun in his car, which as a convicted felon he is unable to own or possess a firearm.

He had purchased a gun because in 2017 he was shot on two seperate occassions, the second one putting him in a wheelchair and requiring frequent medical attention.

The petition is to try get him an alternative to prison such has home detention or some other form of punishment as he believes the jail system will ignore his medical needs

He has 6 days to change their mind before he has to hand himself in and begin his time
