Funny you mention that because I thought he fell off when he started doing that shouty flow toward the end of the 90s. Nowhere near as good as it used to be.

I didn't see a thread on Mount Westmore (Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, E-40, Too $hort) so I thought I'd start one. We've got a potentially huge album on the way with producers like Dr. Dre involved, no features and a dedicated Instagram page. Sounds like it could be a the monster a lot of us have been waiting for before the curtain call. Here's a ~10min video of their performance of Big Subwoofer last month. Personally, I like the song but if had to be picky, they should've all done 2 verses each.

They're legends who'll always be able to headline big shows.
But most hip hop fans don't care about their recent albums, no matter how good they are.
I, for one, still enjoy Cube's albums, but his sales figures have been extremely low for his last two albums, especially if you compare them to any mumble rapper who was unknown 2 or 3 years ago.
It happens to almost every artist, so it's not a surprise.

My opinion - The best promo for a new project this day and age is simply anticipation...This project will come out when they feel there's enough want for it (when will it yield the most off chute business?)....Doesn't make sense this is a financial thing, doesn't line up because these guys all have the money to fund this project and labels don't pay anyway - I think that's someone making shit up....Fixed costs on a production these days are minimal - Brian Big Bass Gardner competes against guys that charge half of what he does...Produce the track, record it, mix it, master it, distribute it....The biggest cost used to be distribution but digital changed all that. These guys all have their own studios so those costs are minimal compared to the past.
Labels were similar to credit unions but the business model is nothing like it used to be. "Sales" are all relative....Reputable/Marketable acts still make money on streams/downloads but the industry as a whole is probably a 10th of what it was....However....shows, promos and synergistic businesses are still profitable and will be even more so once COVID fucks off a little more. So in the end, this project won't make any money directly but it will open numerous opportunities elsewhere - I'm pretty confident it's those paperwork and partnership agreements that are causing these delays. It will come out once each act is content.

Did Cube pay any attention while making the album? He says Dre has a verse but doesn’t know if he produced anything. Anyone else thinking that someone just got these 4 together and is organising the whole thing and the rest just turn up and do what’s asked when they’re asked?
It’s just an odd project either way. Anticipation for albums doesn’t really work anymore. People just want it announced and released within days, preferably on a streaming platform so they don’t have to pay for it. Streaming heads annoy the fuck out of me. Expect everything for free and complain like fuck when (insert album here) isn’t available on whatever artist ripping off streaming platform they use.
Like D-Talx said, the money is to be made on opportunities that open up, merch etc. Support the wishes of true fans and they’ll support you right back.

If I had to guess, I'd say this album won't be out this year. Probably 2022. Hope I'm wrong. Either way, they need to stop dick teasing. The bar is already high enough considering who the group is. They need to focus on delivering a quality product. The work will speak for itself.

They recorded the album during quarantine, emails and phone communication, that is how it all came together no one was around each other for the initial development of the album.
He said Dre has a verse and that he helped on a Fred Wreck beat, what more you want? The producers were not involved with developing shit, neither were the artist it was just a vibe

Indeed. After their TV appearance, the whole project didn't seem to have the impact they thought it would have. They designed a group logo, created an official Instagram channel, did some promo photo shoots and interviews, but nothing else happened after that - since about 3 months. So yeah, I think this is another scrapped project not intended for the public.

Yup, that means there's some money behind these projects and execs that are depending on success for backing them. That old school pressure is on to deliver.
Independence is ethical for artists but the consequence of it has been laziness beyond belief. Fans took a huge hit in quality material so artists could make all their money. But artists took a hit in sales after they got their ownership. There needs to be some balance that's restored so that they can make what's rightfully theirs but the music doesn't suffer. I blame it on greed from the majors back in the day. If they were decent, they'd cut people good deals and still make a quality product. Hopefully this Def Jam move will bring back some of that sparkle.

It's a reasonable assumption. I think everyone is just backing each other's projects right now for the takeover.

They already have an entire album recorded (it was recorded during the first year of the pandemic). I've heard 6-7 songs on various posts from a wide range of affiliated artists and producers - Batllecat, Whoo Kid, etc have posted snippets here and there over the last few months. They've got plenty of heat.
Between the Super Bowl, the Def Jam deal, Snoop's upcoming project, Dre's plans, and the recent Eminem boost/involvement, I think there's enough gas for the car.

I'd take an album with these 4 legends in any capacity over anyone. They can bring their absolute worst, I'm still going to be checking it out and looking forward to it more than any new artist. But I guess that's just me.

You missing my point. I'm happy he did but I'm not happy with the fact I can't listen to it without playing game - I'm not fan of homemade rips that's all. It's a waste of material and bunch of good songs. I wish we get soundtrack soon but It won't happen IMO.

I don't anticipate that happening. This is too big of a release and too few people are in the NFT space. It has a decent learning curve and they would alienate massive amounts of potential buys this way. Their single "Big Subwoofer" is on Apple Music and other platforms.

Yeah, doesn't seem likely. I'm starting to think that these "release dates" are just ways of building hype rather than an actual deadline - like faux dates to get people excited and then delay to build demand. It's the cheap way out of proper marketing.

Can someone please explain to me why a group like Mount Westmore with hundreds of millions of fans around the world is releasing only 505 copies of an album that cost nearly $3,000 on a platform that uses a technology most of the planet (much less the artists themselves) doesn't even understand? Barring the massive rip-off that it is, the process of just getting the funds onto Gala to buy this is not only a HUGE pain in the ass, but it costs additional money as well.

The format has now changed on Gala. The album package has disappeared. Pretty sure it didn't sell out because everything else from other artists that did is still up for people to see. And if you filter by checking the "sold out" box, nothing comes up. Sales weren't moving so now they think they can break it up into ~900-1000 NFTs of each song, which are for sale from $198 - $372 a piece. Looks like the prices rise as songs sell more (because they're assholes). Somehow they've managed to get even greedier in less than 24hrs of the album's release. Based on what I'm seeing with the prices and how they're functioning from sales, something tells me they probably have prices capped at least $1million per song edition if each song sells out so that would be at least $14 million. I get how everbody's butthurt over this NFT shit. Then again, imagine being an icon, forming a super group with 3 other icons. In today's climate, what's the outlook with the type of music they make? Maybe doing 10,000 first week (being extremely generous here). Let's say they somehow end up selling 100,000 (after a couple of years or so)... Not only is it slow money, it's almost no money. Little to no attention. Let's keep it real: wouldn'ta been worth the effort. We r talking about real fuckin' legends here. This is a huge project for the West and hip-hop in general. They deserve better and even more so when it's a great body of work they put together.
And since it's also gonna be released "traditionally" anyway, there's no real reason feel so strongly... :kanyeshrug:

Black Star pulled this shit, but it wasn't an NFT. I got lucky and a friend sent me the album (Black Star's new one). This is a fad to put albums on these sites. They are trying to buck the system of DSPs, but it is going to backfire. They might as well put the shit on DSPs and call it a day. It is a stupid investment to do this on Gala. Snoop is really into NFTs though. I think most of the next DR releases will be just like this unfortunately.
There's no way I am spending $3000 on music. I would rather spend that to go to Europe for a few weeks, which is a much better investment.

but knowing that it will eventually be released on all platforms, i do think the sense of expectations being voiced by some folks is cringey and borderline selfish on their behalf, which is pretty ironic
at the end of the day, no one can tell you what to do wit your own artwork. i understand the frustration from the fans, but the demanding comes off as cac entitlement- some even going as far as talkin bout colonizing the music to get the artists back

I'm sure the artists themselves can relate, which is the greatest irony - right next to rapping about the streets but only making the album available to a demographic that couldn't be further from them. The hypocrisy here between what they rap about, where they come from, and their present actions is impressive. They make great music but outside of that creative space, they're dumb as rocks.

It can be on a mock-up page available to download 24/7 in a price range from say $10 - $20 in a variety of formats that range from CDQ to Hi-Res. Simple. An incomplete web-based music platform that sells a dead format for a small fortune isn't the only option besides streaming platforms. This really doesn't need to be spelled out.

Not dissing you. I got confused as to what thread I was in and that is the only Czech I can remember. I used to live with and know a lot of Czech people. You will have a great time living there.
I don’t know why Snoop et al don’t want to just release this. Do we think many people bought this? Surely a proper release would get them more media appearances which in turn would work out better financially than trying to keep this as an NFT exclusive.

cd-r = a cd where the music is recorded to as opposed to factory pressed on. it’s lower quality. you can tell by looking at the back side of the cd. if it’s a blueish/greenish tint (sometimes black), that means it’s cd-r

I listened to all of E-40's albums last year and he has the most underrated discography in rap history, in my opinion. E-40 is very versatile with his flow. You have to give him a chance. Forget about the hits, listen to the albums.

Snoop sounds good on most of the tracks but Cube sounds totally uninspired on most of this album. Also, just pissed in general about the rollout for this project going back to the hype, NFT release and delays of this project coming out. They also hyped up Dr Dre being featured on the album and all we get is him saying a couple words before the tracks starts. Production doesn’t sound great and also sounds like the album is poorly mixed/ mastered.

Although hip-hop legends Ice Cube, Too $hort, E-40 and Snoop Dogg have spun the rotating wheel of collaboration for about 30 years, a full-length album from pioneering elder statesmen was an unexpected, but welcome, development. First teased in late 2020, NFT enthusiasts were treated to the group’s official debut album, ‘Bad MFs’ in June of this year, when the album was released via blockchain. ‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’ reads like a fleshed-out, retooled version of that; West Coast rap fans are serviced well here.
The LP opens with the Rick Rock-produced ‘California’. Sharing the third and final verse with Cube, Too $hort’s verbal volley of explosives overpower the potent kicks and snares: “And we ain’t throwin’ no signs (oh god), just a clip and a nine / One bullet to the head, put some shit on your mind”. But despite the brilliance shown early on, ‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’ is restrained by its own ambition, catering to the four emcees’ needs sparingly. ‘Have A Nice Day’ sees Snoop open with Antarctic levels of cool before a stilted chorus by Dem Jointz and Jenn Em melts any momentum the cut once had.
Dr. Dre pops up for a welcome cameo on ‘Too Big’ and mid-album treasure ‘I Got Pull’ is nothing short of G-Funk perfection. With a tempered bassline and liquid synths reminiscent of DJ Quik’s ‘Rhythm-al-ism’ and Warren G’s ‘Regulate… The G Funk Era’, highlight ‘I Got Pull’ beams listeners into a palm tree-covered, westside wanderlust as E-40 spits: “Wake up man, wake up / 40 here with some brand-new game / Like I said when I’m all up in her brain / She think I’m a cloud, want me to make it rain”.
Awkwardly, ‘Up & Down’ is an unworthy successor. The attempted “thug romance” number sees our four leads concoct a sour and repetitive snooze-fest. “Nipples pokin’ out like missiles (missiles) / When I whisper in her ear / she get tickled”, rapped by E-40 comes across as juvenile. The record teeters on self-parody with ‘How Many’, a creatively skint club record with sparse replay value. As a result, listeners may cast their minds back to $hort’s blazing club anthem ‘Blow the Whistle’, Cube’s era-defining ‘Death Certificate’ LP, Snoop’s funk-driven ‘Doggystyle’ and E-40’s thug autobiography ‘In a Major Way’ for refreshment.
‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’ isn’t completely devoid of praise; having to accommodate four distinct styles and personalities is no simple task. But while there are moments of brilliance, it’s clear there are too many chefs in the kitchen.

The album title consists of four names that need no introduction: Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort. These rap icons justly claim themselves as architects of West Coast hip-hop. As Mount Westmore, they’re a supergroup whose presence is etched in the California landscape.
Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40, and Too $hort also represent a wave of old-school rappers sustaining recording careers well into their 50s, long after the hits have subsided, and fans have moved on to fresher trends. (Tellingly, they snark about “IG” and TikTok.) New work by first-wave golden-age heroes tends to be throwback affairs that hearken to the past – Chill Rob G’s recent Empires Crumble is a recommended example – or pop confections where the elders gamely try to party with the kids. Throw Snoop into the latter category: last summer, he scored a top 10 Billboard hit with BTS and Benny Blanco on “Bad Decisions.”
Yes, Uncle Snoop’s guileless ability to personify the “How do you do, fellow kids” meme is what makes him so beloved to everyone. It may also be why he sounds slightly bored on Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort. This is very much an Ice Cube affair, and he sculpts this album in his loud, punchy, hard-funkin’ style. Too $hort acquits himself well, too, striking a balance between musty pimp raps and surprisingly effective community-oriented lyrics. E-40 remains a style ambassador, gliding with his liquid, off-center flow. Snoop is a dutiful presence by comparison, though he occasionally gets a good verse in, like when he reminisces about attending the legendary Fresh Fest arena tour in the Eighties as a young hog on “Do My Best.” All four men are multimillionaires with innumerable business ventures, and this Mount Westmore project was originally planned for release in 2021. One gets the sense they had to align their busy schedules before they found time to drop it.
Thankfully, Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort doesn’t dabble in newfangled gimmicks like trap and drill. The music is no frills G-funk and mob music. Part of the fun is scanning the credits for all the OGs who contributed, like Rick Rock, Soopafly, Battlecat, Fredwreck, Droop E, Ant Banks, and Simon “ProHoeZak” McKinley, whom some diggers may recall for his Nineties single as C-Funk, “Coconut in Ya Lime.” Even Cube’s old NWA partner Dr. Dre drops in to say what’s up on “Too Big.” Incidentally, that song might be the album’s best concession to current tastes since it’s produced by P-Lo, an East Bay star who also garlands
Otherwise, this is a grown folks’ party. There are some goofy lines from the four GOATs about threesomes on “Motto.” “We burn rubber, me, her, and her lover,” raps Snoop. Ice Cube keeps making references to old pop lore like TJ Hooker and Clash of the Titans. “It’s a new day, still got the AK/If these bitches want to take it back to 88,” he warns on “Big Subwoofer.” The quartet settles into a zone about midway through the 16-track album, and “Have a Nice Day,” “Ghetto Gutter,” and “I Got Pull” all satisfy. They also offer plenty of “Free Game” to the kids who happen to wander into the room. “I see the homies outside, sellin’ crack/There’s no way out if you stuck in the trap,” raps Too $hort on “Ghetto Gutter.”
The beats are generally good, but the choruses are often perfunctory excuses to get from one verse to the next. The days when these four could drop hooks like a gut punch have largely passed. And Ice Cube, whose political storms include a “Contract with America” meeting with former President Trump, remains prone to saying shit like, “We’re victims of elites” on “Have a Nice Day.” However, it’s also a ridiculously thrilling moment. Cube talking reckless, Too $hort as the pimp with a heart of gold, E-40’s deep slanguage, and smooth ol’ Uncle Snoop: this is Mount Westmore’s appeal to their graying base.
“If I had four of my favorite rappers on a track/I would expect it to have some slaps that sound like hella far back,” raps E-40 on “Do My Best.” “I would expect it to have some shit like this to make me reminisce/When I was up in the dope game, having my money, getting rich.”

Mount Westmore is a west coast supergroup consisting Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 & Too $hort. Each member being veterans in their hometowns of Long Beach, Compton, Vallejo & Oakland respectively. We never heard all 4 of them on a track together until after they formed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic & after releasing their full-length debut Bad MFs over the summer exclusively as an NFT, they’re finally putting it on streaming services 6 months later backed my MNRK Music Group & with some new cuts sprinkled into the mix.

“California” is a hyper opener produced by Rick Rock representing their home-state whereas the bouncy “Motto” lets everyone know what the maxim exactly is. “Big Subwoofer” blends hyphy with trap thanks to Kato dropping some braggadocio leading into “Too Big” pulling from snap music interestingly enough going back & forth with each other talking about just exactly how they prefer to do shit.
However with “Activated”, we have Mt. Westmore explaining that everything’s imitated rather than calculated over a g-funk instrumental just before “Have a Nice Day (Fuck You)” has a soulful boom bap quality provided by Fredwreck & Dem Jointz basically telling everyone to kiss their asses & I actually like the latter’s hook quite a bit although my only complaint is that the first verse he delivers was redundantly short. “Ghetto Gutter” brings back the hyphy courtesy of 40 Water’s son Droop-E with co-production from Ant Banks acknowledging that it’s how you come prior to the rubbery-synth-laced “Free Game” dropping precisely that.
“I Got Pull” returns to g-funk turf advising to ask your boss if you don’t know who they’re are while “Up & Down” comes through with my least favorite track on the album personally, as it happens to be an awkward ode to all the thick bitches out there. “Do My Best” picks things back up with a smoother ballad produced by Soopafly referring to themselves as champions while “Lace You Up” has a more peppy quality to the beat giving the listeners some advise.
Meanwhile with “Tribal”, all 4 of them talk about how it takes a village to raise the real ones over more hyphy production while the song “How Many” goes back to the g-funk spitting that gangsta shit. The penultimate track “On Camera” is an eerie trap cut feeling like that they’re being watched primarily because of how quick things tend to go around on social media these days & “Mash” is menacing closer getting quite mobbish.
I know some people were quick to write off the supergroup’s debut since it was initially released exclusively as an NFT back in June, but I knew they’d have to put it up on all streaming services at some point & I gotta admit that the material that we got out of it is pretty impressive. It’s interesting to hear how all 4 MCs’ unique deliveries mesh with one another & the production representing the state of California as a whole by blending g-funk with hyphy.

Fans who got the chance to listen to that collection, called Bad MFs, will recognize a number of tracks on Snoop Cube 40 $hort. However, there’s an equal amount of fresh material, making it a worthwhile listen regardless. The album opens with “California,” a G-funk banger with synth fading in and out like the doppler effect. All four rappers express their love and pride in the West Coast hip-hop scene, with E-40 giving a standout verse with his iconic unmatchable delivery.
“Motto” follows suit with low keyboard synths, light clapping snares and bass drum pickup as each MC states his life motto of living hard while living large. “Big Subwoofer” comes on as a more playful party joint, with Snoop, E-40 and Too $hort delivering braggadocios bars—while Ice Cube takes a harder shift into a sort of action movie role. P-LO, of The HBK Gang and also a Bay Area local, takes the lead on the hook for “Too Big,” as Mount Westmore reflects on the members’ legendary status as hip-hop icons and their larger than life personas.
An organ flourish opens “Activated,” as heavy bass pickup is followed with clapping snares. Each MC talks about needing to know when to step up to defend his status as the greatest. The song focuses on the nature of critics and challengers as “paper tigers,” seldom posing any sort of threat to these heavyweights. “Have A Nice Day (Fuck You)” features gorgeous vocal performances from Dem Jointz and Jenn Em. The low bass melody is graced with the occasional soft electric guitar strumming overlaying the slow, swinging percussion.
“Ghetto Gutter” has all four MCs appreciating how growing up in the hood built them into who they are today, with keyboard strikes and hand percussion paired with clapping snares. Grand piano chords kick off “I Got Pull,” where a playful bouncy tempo rides in and Mount Westmore raps about the overwhelming sphere of influence it holds locally—Too $hort is about to get a street named fifer him in Oakland!—and abroad. “Do My Best” is exactly the kind of motivational track that the title spells out for itself, with a dripping keyboard melody that melts in your ears.
The quartet then imparts some wisdom on”Lace You Up,” where soft plinking tones turn into a low keyboard melody and heavy bass. Each rapper gives insight into the realities of the harsh world that young people tend to overlook due to feelings of invincibility, without ever coming off as patronizing. The whistling tones and strong snare and kick drum pairing make for a memorable hyphy joint on “Tribal,” followed by the rumbling synths and claps of “How Many.” Both tracks deal with street politics, with the former discussing loyalties and the latter exploring the risks of snitches.
As the album winds down, “On Camera” offers eerie string plucks and a taunting chorus. The group explores the wide plethora of ways mass surveillance has infiltrated our lives.
With its debut album, Mount Westmore more than lives up to the high expectations, crafting an exceptional embodiment of West Coast hip-hop.

I think its a pretty decent album after one full listen through, there's good energy throughout, the beats knock, maybe a couple of tracks could have been dropped from the end product to be replaced by one or two of the tracks that didn't make the cut.
There's nothing ground-breaking here and its not a classic by any means, but you have to look at the context with which this album was recorded and rolled out. It's basically a side project with four rap veterans having fun with it, recorded during the Covid pandemic whereby each of them would essentially send in their verses to be stitched together over the beats, I doubt they even met in person to record even one of these tracks.
E-40's verses are always entertaining, Snoop puts in some memorable moments on here, I don't agree that Too $hort sounds trash like someone else said, he sounds like he always has done, and we know Ice Cube isn't going to rap like he did on his first few albums but it's just good to hear him rap full stop at this point.
But that's the way the album turned out, and I'm cool with that.

I will say though that whenever there’s a producer tag on a beat it can make an album sound like a mixtape at times and cheapens the listening experience.

even i think there are lots of fillers on the album and i only like a few songs which already leaked way before, i'm happy that 4 west coast legends dropped a full length album. i won't be bitching about it. because when they think its not good enought to release and they decide to sheve, we start to hate and cuss them. so they worked hard really to drop 50 songs and already released an album.
only problem about the album is all four of em doesnt have to be on each song. 4 verses on each song makes the recod very long and pretty boring. am i wrong? whatever, they better release the next one with "bad mfs" and "aim squeeze bust" and the song with dr. dre verse.

I've listened to the album on Friday night and it was pretty good. I liked all of the songs except a couple, but I go by the rule of three. Albums marinate bette when you listen to it for a third time. I like to not listen to albums too much and wait a few days or even a week.
Snoop and E-40 carried the album, but Cube had flashes of his old self on many of the tracks.
For now, I will give it 4/5 stars just on the talent alone, but I did enjoy this album on the first listen. The songs I initially like will always be my favorite when I listen more: California, Motto, Big Subwoofer, Too Big, Activated, Have a Nice Day, Ghetto Gutter, Free Game, I Got Pull, Do My Best, How Many, Tribal.

Solid album, it’s above par what they would have put out on solo so far, I did enjoy “bodr” and Cubes last few Lps since he went independent.
As a E-40 fan from day 1 it’s hard to dissect a lot of the material cuz of the length of them. But he always has slappers… but this a dope ass album to ride to.
I put my speakers 🔊 on blast this weekend and it felt good to ride around to work and days off to the bar and chargers game this weekend to This shit.
I had a backpack and headphones when their best material was getting bought by me. It’s been 20 years since tha last meal and 30 for death certificate or more.
Too $hort was the first hip hop album I owned, Life is Too Short. First CD was Gettin It. Followed by Bow Down cds were expensive back In the day.
I’m riding in a 2022 Cadillac that I own now, and bumping the same artist I did as a kid has. Feeling of damn they still did it and got it.
It ain’t what they used to be at all, but shit neither am I.

In Los Angeles, Ice Cube sparked the rise of gangsta rap as part of N.W.A in the late ‘80s, before Snoop Dogg broke out of Long Beach to introduce G-Funk to the masses through his landmark 1993 album “Doggystyle.”
With colorful lingo and slick-talking raps, E-40 and Too Short have steered the sound of the Bay Area since first emerging in the 1980s.
And in the past decades, these four have taken their sound around the globe through countless tours and millennium-defying hits. Their accomplishments spill outside of music, too, whether it’s Ice Cube’s Big3 basketball league prolonging the careers of NBA stars, Snoop Dogg’s ubiquitous presence in Hollywood through movies and brand deals or E-40’s budding spirits empire.
But when the world ground to a halt in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic, they joined forces to create Mount Westmore, a bona fide super-group connecting the Bay to L.A. On their debut album, titled “Snoop, 40, Cube and Short,” they’re quick to remind you of their founding father status, advising you to follow their footsteps on “Lace You Up” before flipping culture vultures the bird on “Have a Nice Day.”
It’s easy to tell how much fun the foursome, all of whom are now in their 50s, had making the album, which was released this summer as an NFT before arriving on all platforms on Dec. 9. But when they gather on Zoom shortly after Thanksgiving, they’re just as excited to talk about their families as their music.
“Congratulations, cuh,” Snoop Dogg told Ice Cube, who logged on from Mexico where he and his wife vacationed for their 30th anniversary. “Thirty-year vet, walking underwater without getting wet,” said Snoop. “I’m trying to get to that mountaintop right now ... I’m at 27 years. But my baby girl [Cori Broadus] just got proposed to on Thanksgiving. I cried, cuh. On some real s—, like a grown-ass man. I cried. That s— was beautiful.”
How did the idea for Mount Westmore come about?
Ice Cube: I think everybody saw an opportunity to do something bigger than just us. Something fun. Hip-hop can be so serious ... but ain’t nobody having more fun than us. We all love each other, it’s like being in a group with your cousins.
Snoop Dogg: If I’m the baby of the bunch, these are my OGs. These are the guys that I looked up to before I had a chance to do it. And once I got in the industry, we became brothers.
What was everybody’s role in the project?
Too Short: We didn’t utilize personal assistants, managers or label execs. Nobody got involved. We A&R’ed this ourselves.
Snoop Dogg: You was the A&R, Short. N— you lying. [Laughs]
Ice Cube: Everybody used their specialties, from visuals to lingo to beats to production. Even stage production. Everybody was able to pass the baton, like “this your area, we’re gonna rely on you.” This wouldn’t have come together without Too Short’s diligence. He really kept the project together.
Too Short: If it wasn’t agreed on by all four of us, it ain’t happening.
You made this album at the height of COVID. Were you in the studio together, or was it all created through Zoom?
Ice Cube: It was mostly us Zooming each other. We realized we could get a lot done and not be on the 405 for an hour every day. It was fun to have this to focus on. 2020 was f— up.
Snoop Dogg: It felt like being a kid again, being able to be with your friends and not have to go in when the street lights come on. We can have a friendly argument and then talk about football, basketball, whatever. We want to show the youngsters how to grow into Ice Cube, Too Short, 40, Snoop Dogg. How you can grow into your 50s and still be relevant.
You guys are all family men by now. How does that change your approach to music?
Too Short: I’m what you call a granddaddy-daddy. My daughter will be 4 in a couple weeks. I’m late to the party, but I’m here.
E-40: My son, Issue, recorded all my parts for Mount Westmore right here in my studio. I paid him just like I paid any other engineer so he could feel good about it.
Ice Cube: I had my kids my whole career. My youngest is 22. My hardest records were done when they were the youngest. So the records I do now, I’m trying to teach the youth about what they should be doing. Not just what they’re seeing already.
Too Short: During this project, at some point, each one of y'all’s sons chimed in and was like “Pops, that ain’t it, man.” We got the feedback from Cube’s son, Snoop’s son and 40’s son, like “that’s it.” “Or that ain’t it.”
Ice Cube: They really told us what they want from OGs like us.
What songs did they gravitate to?
Snoop Dogg: “Have A Nice Day (F— You).” My son loves that record right there.
E-40: Because your son has an old soul. My sons do too, they love that song.
Ice Cube: My son likes “Activated,” “Free Game.” He was tripping off “Tribal.” It’s fun asking people their favorite songs, because everybody likes something different. But what I really liked about working with Short and 40 was that they were pulling out beats that were more Bay friendly. Northern California stuff. I might not have rhymed on a beat like “Free Game” if it wasn’t for them.
Each of you proudly takes up the OG torch on this album. When you were coming up in music, how much advice did you take from the people before you?
E-40: We had OGs, but not OGs as far as the music. [Snoop and Cube] did, they had a legend as their mentor. They had Dre.
Ice Cube: I learned a lot from not only Dre, but Lonzo [Williams] from World Class Wreckin’ Cru. He used to throw all the parties. But I’d see people on their own grind like Mixmaster Spade, DJ Pooh, King Tee, who had their own flavor. But as far as the OGs in my hood, when I got into hip-hop, they became less important. They didn’t know how to get you to the promised land when it came to hip-hop, because it was so new.
At what point in your career did you want to take up that mentorship role?
Too Short: I just realized I was an OG like two weeks ago. I thought I was still a youngster. [Laughs]
E-40: You’re an old-ass youngster, Short, that’s what we all are.
Ice Cube: For me, it was getting with Chuck D, Ice-T, the real political motherf— in the game, who were spitting it and getting venom spit back at them. I knew at a certain point that I wanted to do street knowledge. Not just talking about gangsta s—. I decided to be that type of artist going into “Amerikkka’s Most Wanted.”
Too Short: You said Ice-T’s name. I gotta say on the West Coast, I remember back in the ‘90s he used to keep his phone line open if you needed to call and get some OG game from somebody who walked the path before you. He’d always sit down and powwow with young rappers, and give his perspective.
Ice Cube: He gave me the best piece of advice I ever got in the game. He told me to know why you wrote each line, and be able to intelligently break down each rhyme. So if they ever question you on any of your lines, you’ll be able to put them in their place. You gotta be on point when you’re doing controversial lyrics.
Snoop Dogg: That was great advice. When I was getting off into Hollywood, movies were coming left and right. I was taking every role they gave me. I remember Ice-T was like “Snoop, less is more. Sometimes you gotta say no to these movies.” I was in B-level, C-level movies, but when I started saying no, I got better opportunities.
You’re four of the biggest artists from Los Angeles and the Bay Area. What’s been your relationship with each other’s cities?
Ice Cube: We keep each other on point. We [in L.A.] can be caught in our own flavor and style, and then we see some s— from the Bay, where the energy is on a whole other level, and then we like, “we gotta pick it up a little bit, we’re too laid back.” I’m pretty sure the Bay looks at L.A. like we gotta smooth it out a little bit.
Snoop Dogg: When me, Warren G and Nate Dogg were selling dope, our favorite group was 415. So naturally, we created 213. That’s the California connection.
Too Short: It’s like when Dr. Dre dropped “The Chronic.” Up in the Bay, we went back to the drawing board, like, “we gotta switch some things up here.”
What did it mean for you all to see Snoop onstage at the Super Bowl in February?
Too Short: Coolest s— ever.
Ice Cube: It was amazing to see, from where the music started, to being on top of the world. He let the world know. From a producer like Dr. Dre, artists like Snoop, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent. I don’t know how they’re gonna match that.
Snoop Dogg: I got to be in N.W.A one time with “Chin Check,” and I got to do the Super Bowl. Two dreams came true. When I’m dead, I’m good.

The foursome of hip-hop icons fail to rekindle the magic of their heydays in an album that bores. Here is our review of Mount Westmore’s latest outing.
“Four of the west coast’s best and most recognisable hip-hop artists collaborate to release a project that pushes the boundaries of the sound whilst staying true to their signature styles” would have been the headline thirty years ago. Unfortunately for Mount Westmore (Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 and Too $hort), the year is 2022.
Rap has evolved past basic gangster talk and funky dance beats, and whilst Snoop Cube 40 $hort is an attempted callback to hip-hop’s golden era, the foursome fails to provide substance or any originality that makes this album worth listening to so late on in their careers.
The album is lazy, seen first and foremost through the hooks, which are too often repetitive. On the likes of ‘Too Big’ or ‘Free Game’, the choruses are literally just the title over and over again, which is disappointing as the song ‘Big Subwoofer’ demonstrates that the group has the capabilities of putting together a well-written, catchy hook.
The lyricism is lazy throughout; bars such as “more bass than baseball” make me question whether these rappers could release multi-platinum genre-defining classics in the 80s and 90s.
Moreover, several songs feature instrumentals that simultaneously sound like something Iggy Azalea might use when creating a radio hit and an attempt to create an old-school G-Funk callback. The result is several beats which don’t fit the voices, themes or style of the rappers.
Snoop Dogg has for too long now tried to replicate the style that gave him monumental success in his early career whilst failing to realise that it was both the novelty of his voice and delivery and the mainstream appeal of laid-back, funky west coast beats that were substantial factors in his rise to stardom.
He sounds dated and, frankly, out of his depth on Snoop Cube 40 $hort. He’s too old and successful to be delivering bars like “you want bullshit, imma let the metal blast,” and too often, his bars are too similar to what we’ve been hearing throughout his now-thirty-year career.
Ice Cube faces the same conundrum. Now a successful actor, it’s been decades since Cube was parading the streets of L.A. as a pimp and gangster; it becomes tiresome to still hear about bouncing titties and toting guns from someone who should be reminiscing. His flow throughout the album is monotonous, as is his rhyme scheme, and he rarely veers away from basic two-syllable rhymes.
Occasionally the forces on the album do combine for some good. ‘Motto’ features Snoop’s best verse on the album, amongst consistently good performances from all members and an unusually well-written chorus behind a catchy instrumental. Similarly, ‘Have A Nice Day’ features a welcome featured chorus from Dem Jointz and Jenn Em and another highlight from Snoop Dogg.
However, on this track, much like the rest of the album, it is E-40 who delivers the best and most enjoyable verses. A tried and tested veteran of the rap game who has inspired everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Jay-Z, his unique off-beat flows and ability to switch up his delivery are welcome additions to a project which is often boring to listen to.
From the opening track ‘California,’ it is evident the difference between E-40 and his colleagues. Whilst Cube, Snoop and $hort rely on the imagery of a gangster lifestyle and references to cultural attractions, 40 is much more introspective about how he has seen the state change through the stages of his career.
Yet despite this, whilst E-40 is the most consistent of the four, a few good verses do not make up for bars such as “If you meet all four, you might poop (shit)”, by Too $hort, or just the consistent lacklustre performances from the hip-hop veterans throughout the project. In 65 minutes of runtime, nothing of much substance is said, and the album begins to feel like a slog.
Originally released as an NFT in June this year with a much shorter tracklist, the foursome would have been much better off releasing this version on digital platforms, giving their die-hard fans a blast from the past without oversaturating. The result of this effort, however, is an outdated, lazy project that reflects where most of the curators are in their rapping careers.

The west coast rap supergroup’s album works reasonably well at times, but there are more misses than hits
Last October, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 and Too $hort released not-bad bop Big Subwoofer, its camper-than-panto video showing the west coast rap supergroup Mount Westmore flying into space to… stage an am-dram Avatar sequel in a strip club? It was never quite clear. Distressingly, they tried to parlay the limited artistic gains of that debut single into a summer album, Bad MFs, which appeared “on the blockchain” (honestly, no idea) and is proffered here with a worse name and tracklisting. Its lush, soul-stroked title track is gone, while the drab, misanthropic Have a Nice Day (Fuck You) remains.
Their four quite different flows still work reasonably well together, from $hort’s lubricious bars to Cube’s truculent pugilism, over comfort-zone beats of electro, P-funk and other familiar 1980s grooves. Yet harmless nostalgia predictably succumbs to charmless bluster. Up & Down is the nadir, wherein our four elderly chums become obsessed with watching a “thicc” woman (wife, mother, daughter or stripper, it’s again unclear) struggling to put on jeans because of the size of her thighs. It’s supposed to be amusing, but has all the wild comedy of listening to your dad trying to finish a porno.

Four pillars of West Coast Hip-Hop join forces, as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 and Too $hort deliver Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort, their debut as the supergroup Mount Westmore. All hailing from The Golden State, the quartet of legends immediately represent for their territory on the album opener “California.” Produced by Rick Rock, the track finds the group setting the stage, with Snoop acknowledging their strength in numbers. “I hooked up with more hoggs/Cube, 40 and Short Dawg/Representin’ Cali, we back on it boy,” he raps atop the bouncy backdrop.
Paying homage to their respective locales, all parties put forth strong performances, kicking off the proceedings on a high note. The previously released singles “Big Subwoofer” and “Too Big” featuring P-Lo keeps the vibes afloat, while standouts like the Fredwreck and Dem Jointz-produced “Have A Nice Day,” and the Soopafly scored “Do My Best,” find the crew hitting on all cylinders. The album hits a slight lull during its middle portion due to a brief string of offerings that border on underwhelming, but finishes strong, as the cuts “Lace You Up,” and “How Many” prove to be more than serviceable. With over a century worth of skin in the game combined, Snoop, Cube, 40 and $hort linking for an album is a monumental occasion in itself. But the music actually being good makes the listen that more enjoyable

Mount Westmore is a west coast supergroup consisting Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 & Too $hort. Each member being veterans in their hometowns of Long Beach, Compton, Vallejo & Oakland respectively. We never heard all 4 of them on a track together until after they formed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic & after releasing their full-length debut Bad MFs over the summer exclusively as an NFT, they’re finally putting it on streaming services 6 months later backed my MNRK Music Group & with some new cuts sprinkled into the mix.
“California” is a hyper opener produced by Rick Rock representing their home-state whereas the bouncy “Motto” lets everyone know what the maxim exactly is. “Big Subwoofer” blends hyphy with trap thanks to Kato dropping some braggadocio leading into “Too Big” pulling from snap music interestingly enough going back & forth with each other talking about just exactly how they prefer to do shit.
However with “Activated”, we have Mt. Westmore explaining that everything’s imitated rather than calculated over a g-funk instrumental just before “Have a Nice Day (Fuck You)” has a soulful boom bap quality provided by Fredwreck & Dem Jointz basically telling everyone to kiss their asses & I actually like the latter’s hook quite a bit although my only complaint is that the first verse he delivers was redundantly short. “Ghetto Gutter” brings back the hyphy courtesy of 40 Water’s son Droop-E with co-production from Ant Banks acknowledging that it’s how you come prior to the rubbery-synth-laced “Free Game” dropping precisely that.
“I Got Pull” returns to g-funk turf advising to ask your boss if you don’t know who they’re are while “Up & Down” comes through with my least favorite track on the album personally, as it happens to be an awkward ode to all the thick bitches out there. “Do My Best” picks things back up with a smoother ballad produced by Soopafly referring to themselves as champions while “Lace You Up” has a more peppy quality to the beat giving the listeners some advise.
Meanwhile with “Tribal”, all 4 of them talk about how it takes a village to raise the real ones over more hyphy production while the song “How Many” goes back to the g-funk spitting that gangsta shit. The penultimate track “On Camera” is an eerie trap cut feeling like that they’re being watched primarily because of how quick things tend to go around on social media these days & “Mash” is menacing closer getting quite mobbish.
I know some people were quick to write off the supergroup’s debut since it was initially released exclusively as an NFT back in June, but I knew they’d have to put it up on all streaming services at some point & I gotta admit that the material that we got out of it is pretty impressive. It’s interesting to hear how all 4 MCs’ unique deliveries mesh with one another & the production representing the state of California as a whole by blending g-funk with hyphy.

I keep listening to this album and it gets better every time. It's a fun ass album, very nostalgic. Haters gon hate but whatever, lots of this album slaps.For the most part it feels like an E40/Too Short Album with Cube and Snoop features but each emcee has track or two that they lead and shine one.
