Lil 1/2 Dead - The Dead Has Arisen
February 1995 issue
2 1/2 mics
After Snoop Doggy Dogg and Warren G blew Long Beach up and opened the door for others, along comes Lil' 1/2 Dead, the newest Indo-smoking, lowriding, nigga-bustin', rootin'-tootin' outlaw type. His producer hit him off with tracks other MCs would kill for, but his unoriginal rhymes (limited to getting a gun and doing someone in) keep the LP from reaching its full potential.
"I Had To Be a Hustler" sounds like Domino's "Sweet Potato Pie" and reinforces stereotypes heard from a thousand other "gangstas." "Dead Man Can't Rap" is his version of Spice One's "Trigga Gots No Heart." The beat and themes are like twins, with the exception of background noises and musical sound effects. Being down with the Dogg Pound is all good, but the harmonizing should be left for Snoop! He needs to stick to songs like "12 Pacofdoja," where he and his potnas leap into lyrical gangbang mode.
On another highlight, "Still Got It," he makes you feel like you're in a beaming red 6-4, blazing the Indo, leaning to the left, cruising down the freeway and escaping from the world "gangsta rappers" describe. "That's What You Get" is also worthwhile as he tells muscle-heads that being cock-diesel won't save you from a bullet.
But these strong songs can't change the fact that Lil 1/2 Dead's name also describes his first album. There's a little something for the G'z and hustlers, but his half-dead topics and Doggy-styled antics make him sound like every other West Coaster getting hoochie, smoking loco-weed and doing drivebys. While filled with addictive beats, it will be hard for many listeners to get past 1/2 Dead's sub-par lyrics.

Well I don't think Snoop had any part in him deciding to sing the hook to "On,onsite" though. It might just be HD's own decision.
