I'd say the greatest american would be Benjamin Franklin. I'm fascinated by him. It's hard to not say George Washington was the greatest, though, on another note. He founded the country, was president for a while, and then STEPPED DOWN... it would have been extremely easy for him to just take over the country, and try to live and rule as a dictator, but the moment he stepped down, it showed once and for all his dedication to the country.
Also, his role in the constitution (it wasn't his total idea of course, I guess Thomas Jefferson would get more credit) has to cement him as great. The constitution is an amazing document, becuase it and the bill of rights actually LIMITS the government, instead of giving power TO the government, which is amazingly inspired.

i think you can't say someone is the greatest american. everyone has other things he/she can do very well. george washington isn't necessary greater than someone from the gutter who saves a life.

The constitution is a classic document...although it limits the power of the President too much. Unless both hoses of Congress are on your side, your gonna find it hard to do good. (Clinton.) And lo and behold, when a nutter becomes President he gets both houses.

Oh yeah, I read that, that was in Germany I think. Greatest Americans, and there was Homer Simpson... lol.
On another note, I think the greatest American... hum... Chief Joseph comes to mind, because he is Native American, and he surrendered everything he and his tribe had, to live. And for being a so-called savage by European standards, he was hella poetic. I have to give it to a Native, sorry. Greatest president, either Lincon or FDR, and more Patriotic, George Washington of course.

this whole jesus vs homer simpson thing is good proof how good americans hearts are, in general
when americans said jesus they MEANT well by nominating a good hearted person to represent them, and depending on what your religious beliefs are, it wasn't that dumb of a thing to say , if you're a morman , it's a PERFECT choice. and if you're a christian that believes that god is everwhere and is everything.....it's all to the good. the only time this statement looks dumb is if you're an athiest
