Post by: Don Jacob on July 31, 2003, 03:24:47 PM
when people say these words , it just drives me nuts!

when they say milk (melk)

when they pronounce the a's in lava the same way as "sap" so it sounds like Laavaa

naked (neked)

harrASSment (harris-ment)

when british people/jewish NY people put an -er on a word that ends with a

Madonna (Madonner)
Pamela (Pameler)
Amanda (amander)
Soda (Soder)

then they make words that end with and E sound like it has an A there

Butter (butta)
Flower (flowa)

or when people can't pronounce their ch's

Chicken (shicken)
Chips (Ships)
CHilli Cheese (shilly sheese)

or when a W is just thrown in a word

Dog (Dwog)

or when people just completely leave off letters intirely

when they pronounce the a's in lava the same way as "sap" so it sounds like Laavaa

actually lava is pronounced that way.

naked (neked)

this kind of pronunciation requires less energy and enables you to speak faster. /a/ is a diphthong (two-vowel-sound) and /e/ is a monophthong (single-vowel-sound). You don't need to move your tongue from one position to another.

when british people/jewish NY people put an -er on a word that ends with a

Madonna (Madonner)
Pamela (Pameler)
Amanda (amander)
Soda (Soder)

ever thought of the phonetic enivronment in which these words occur? if a word is ending with a vowel and the next word begins with a vowel, the segment /r/ is often put in between to mark the word boundary. Yet, it might also be the case that those British morons  ;D add an /r/ in order to sound like Americans since American English is a rhotic language.

then they make words that end with and E sound like it has an A there

Butter (butta)
Flower (flowa)

it's not an "a" but a so-called schwa sound. It's easier to pronounce since it requires less energy (almost no tongue movement)

or when people can't pronounce their ch's

Chicken (shicken)
Chips (Ships)
CHilli Cheese (shilly sheese)

all these words start with an affricate (->tsh), a sound which requires much more energy than a fricative (--> "sh").

or when a W is just thrown in a word

Dog (Dwog)
Door (Dwa)
God (Gwod)

i'll have to look up my books to explain this one... don't know whether it's regressive assimilation or some other phonetic phenomena

or when people just completely leave off letters intirely
car (ca)

makes sense if you're british. RP doesn't know the segment /r/ in final position.

LMFAO...so by saying language determines the way you think you're basically saying that if i speak english i will think differently than if i speak german. accent and dialect are social markers? accent and dialect have nothing to do with anything...its just the way ppl talk because of where they are from. language is the only thing that distinguishes us from animals? umm...yeah...and opposable thumbs, and the ability to speak, and use parts of our brain animals cant.

lmao...you're not getting it...thats my whole point...this thread was supposed to be kind of funny...not an english lesson. i dont care about the sapir-whorf hypothesis or american structuralism. the way other people speak has nothing to do with me. the fact is people say things like that generally because of an accent...no matter how technical you look at it...no matter how much you break it down with your hypothesis' and definitions and what not...in the end it all has to do with their accent.

YOUR

Who says "ain't" is not a correct term? It is a contraction of "are not, is not, have not, has not". African Americans also started using it to replace "do not, does not, did not". The word was very commonly used in the 18th century, but today has become disapproved as nonstandard. All it means is that it's not as formal, and more commonly used in habitual speech. THIS IN NO WAY MEANS IT'S "NOT A CORRECT TERM".
