Title: Paris - Guerilla Funk
Post by: Lincoln on August 27, 2003, 06:58:03 AM
Another of Paris's incredible CDs. This one however, showed a fews signs of slowing down, He had already released 2 classics with The Devil Made Me Do It & Sleeping With The Enemy. Not bad my any means, Guerilla Funk does feature some of hip-hops best production. Track by track

1.Prelude
2.Its Real - very funky song, Paris spitting some political lyrics but they have no specific point, very general. Still a great song 4.5/5
3.One Time Fo Ya Mind - An incredible track about sellouts in the hip-hop/black world. Very good beat as well, he sounds very focused on this track speaking of unity. 5/5
4.Guerilla Funk - like It's Real, very funky & political but without focus. Its a great song though 4.5/5
5.Blacks & Blues (Skit)
6.Bring It To Ya w.The Conscious Daughters - An anti-Police song featuring the C D. The beat is intense as hell, thats the best way to describe it. Paris kicks the best verse, ending with "Tell me whos to blame for the hate that hate produced, I'm better off dead than with you, Fuck Amerikkka". 5/5
7. Outta My Life - An R&B ish song that doesn't sound forced or out of place. One of his most personal songs, 4.5/5
8.Whatcha See? - about his dead folks. Another personal track, P sounds great on the mic & has a nice Beastie Boys sample on the hook. 5/5
9.40 Ounces & A Fool - a parody of St. Ide's commercials, hes talking to those who value money over self-respect & other people's health. Funny but a true song. 5/5
10.Back In The Days - probably the best song on the CD. Paris is very personal, and talks about the coming up of Public Enemy which inspired him & his own come-up in the game. One of those songs thats just incredible in the same way of Break The Grip Of Shame & The Devil Made Me Do It. 6/5
11.Guerilla Funk & 12. It's Real - extended remixes, see above.

Overall, this is a shade below Paris's first 2 classics. This is probably one of the best albums, however, production wise. The main problem is on a lot of tracks he is unfocused unlike his first 2. It's still a great album, better than 90% of the wack shit out there. 4.5/5

This album is off the hook. I really love "Back In The Days" ("Motherfuck You And That Fake Gangsta Shit! I Stay Righteous..." - I love this line.). Agreed, the CD isn't anything like "The Devils Made Me Do It" (he was so angry back then...) but it really shows Paris as one of the most talented producers. Can't understand why he doesn't produce for other artists (except Spice 1 and some of his label mates back then, that is). I'm lookin' forward to your review of "Sleeping With The Enemy"!
