Gore Accuses Bush of 'Big Brother' Policy
By JENNIFER C. KERR, AP

WASHINGTON (Nov. 9) - Former Vice President Al Gore accused President Bush on Sunday of failing to make the country safer after the Sept. 11 attacks and using the war against terrorism as a pretext to consolidate power.

''They have taken us much farther down the road toward an intrusive, 'big brother'-style government - toward the dangers prophesied by George Orwell in his book '1984' - than anyone ever thought would be possible in the United States of America,'' Gore charged in a speech.

Gore, who lost the disputed 2000 presidential election to Bush, said terrorism-fighting tools granted after Sept. 11 amount to a partisan power grab that have led to the erosion of the civil liberties of all Americans.

He brought many the crowd of 3,000 to their feet when he called for a repeal of the Patriot Act, which expanded government's surveillance and detention power, allowing authorities to monitor books people read and conduct secret searches.

Gore chided the administration for what he said was its ''implicit assumption'' that Americans must give up traditional freedoms in order to be safe from terrorists.

''In my opinion, it makes no more sense to launch an assault on our civil liberties as the best way to get at terrorists than it did to launch an invasion of Iraq as the best way to get at Osama bin Laden,'' Gore said.

In both cases, Gore said, the administration has ''recklessly put our country in grave and unnecessary danger.''

He also said the administration still has ''no serious strategy'' for domestic security - charging that there aren't sufficient protections in place for ports, nuclear facilities, chemical plants and other key infrastructure.

His speech was sponsored by the liberal activist group Moveon.org, which earlier this year held an online presidential primary in which Howard Dean finished first.

The second sponsor, the American Constitution Society, is a national organization of law students, professors, lawyers and others that says it seek to counter what it characterizes as the dominant, narrow conservative vision of American law today.

The Patriot Act was passed overwhelmingly by Congress after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, but has been under attack by liberals and even many conservatives who say the law intrudes too much into Americans' lives in the name of fighting terror.

Democrats have been trying to build support in the Senate to rolling back portions of the law and some Republicans say it needs to be changed.

''The Patriot Act crossed the line on several key areas of civil liberties,'' Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill, a member of the Senhate Judiciary Committee said last month.

Changes must be made to the law if it is to be renewed in 2005, agreed GOP Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho, another member of the Judiciary Committee.

what do you guys think of that comment by Gore? I believe he said what many people are starting to feel about the Bush Administration

I think it's ironic that Gore and the rest of the 'new democrats' are the ones pushing for social programs that handcuff the ordinary citizen.  Lemme ask you this; isn't a 'big brother' society one where the government controls everything about the citizens?  Well, what do you call a government, that taxes people, and then in return provides them with scholarships for school; vouchers for food; nationalizes jobs (i.e., airport security); provides all the medication; provides your telephone service; owns your home, and doesn't let anyone earn much more than anybody else, in the form of taxes?  Isn't that what Gore was pushing for?  It's at least what he campaigned on.

Come on, most people agree the Patriot Act is just too much. I mean come on now. And Democrats never wanted to nationalize airport jobs, and Democrats have always been against school vouchers, and why push for scholorships when Democrats were the ones that started the Trio Programs, and College Grants, and Work Awards. Democrats are always about college, but have always oppose school vouchers. After all, why ship kids to priviet school when the government should fix the public school. And Priviet schools don't always teach everything that is believed to be needed by government standards.

The Patriot Act is the most unconstitutional thing since the Sedition Act. Trauma knows this and realizes that conservatives are just trying to control our lives, so if you ask him about the Ptriot Act he won't respond or he'll say that he doesn't know much about it. Maybe he doesn't even know that conservatives are trying to close up the gap between church and state, which is also unconstitutional. People with closed minds need to keep their mouths closed as well because quite frankly they don't seem to know shit.

Agreed with Gore. It;'s too bad that even though he won the popular vote, he lost the election.

They already DID nationalize airport security jobs!  Look into how much the government pays community college, and universities to run.  Over half of the operating expenses of most colleges are paid by the U.S. government.  What happens when all these social programs that the dems are pushing for get shut down? They're trying to control our lives with this shit.

Name 1 thing that the Patriot act grants the government that they didn't have before.  1 thing.  You want to talk the shit, now lets see what you know about it.  1 fucking thing that the Patriot act grants the government power over, that they didn't have power over before.

Alright you close-minded idiot.

The Constiution states that the government needed AT LEAST a warrant and probable cause to access private records. Under FISA (I'm guessing you know what this is since you talk out of your ass so fuckin much) that was somewhat changed. The Patriot Act however just changed shit completely. Now the FBI can just tell a FISA judge that the search is to protect against terrorism. The judge CAN'T reject this application. In addition, the investigators may now do it secretly, and the orders can't be contested in court. Yes, the FBI did have the power to do this shit against a group "engaged in international terrorism or activities in preparation therefor." That's not the case anymore.

You say the Patriot Act doesn't give the government any powers it didn't have before? LMAO... So 300 pages of nothing were written right? And what would be the point of creating a document that woudln't change anything, and why are so many policticians against it (liberals as well as conservatives). Several cities have even boycotted the Patriot Act. If it doesn't give the government any new powers then why would they be so staunchly against it? Let me guess, our Congress is filled with communists, right Trauma? LMAO @ you being such an idiot.
