The Conservative Cookie Rebellion

Want to buy a cookie? If you are a white male, that'll be $1; for white females, 75 cents; blacks, 25 cents. The price structure is the message.
Through Affirmative Action Bake Sales, conservative groups on campuses across America are satirically and peacefully spotlighting the injustice of AA programs that penalize or benefit students based solely on gender and race. The cookie rebels are being slammed by such a backlash that the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) -- dreaded by many university administrators -- just shot "an opening salvo" in the rebels' defense.
Thor Halvorssen, CEO of FIRE, declared in a press release last Friday: "Parody and political satire are not illegal in this country. College administrators appear to be under the mistaken impression that protesting affirmative action is not covered by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Freedom of speech is a right enjoyed equally and fully by both supporters and opponents of affirmative action."
What are the AA bake sales, and why do they engender such furor?
The sales are intended to spark discussion, not profits. They are in the same genre as guerrilla theater -- an effective counterculture tactic usually associated with the Left -- through which societal assumptions are challenged by acting out scenarios. To the amazed query, "Are you allowed to do this?" one cookie rebel responded, "Admissions officers do it every day." By shifting the context from university policy to baked goods, the assumptions of affirmative action policies are not only challenged as sexist and racist but also revealed as nonsense.
The cookie rebels are doing the one thing political correctness cannot bear: revealing its absurdity and laughing in its face. They are not merely speaking truth to power; they are chuckling at it.
To regain the moral indignation they prize so highly, the politically correct must demonize the sale of baked goods. Thus, at Indiana University one student filed an official complaint, saying that the cookie sale would "create a climate of hostility against students of color and women and can easily turn violent." (The fact that those students were the ones given a price break didn't seem to occur to the irony-starved critic who equated a buyer's discount with a threat of violence.)
To its credit, Indiana University chose to protect the freedom of speech for both sides of the affirmative action issue; it allowed the bake sale to proceed. Other universities have made the opposite choice.
The College Republicans at the University of Washington sponsored an affirmative action bake sale on Oct. 7. CR President Jason Chambers reported, "Approximately 150 students were gathered around our booth discussing the issue [AA] by about 12:30 when our booth was attacked by leftist students who disagreed with our stance on affirmative action." The Leftists threw cookies to the ground, tore down the display and physically attacked one vendor.
When the leftists began making threats, one of the cookie rebels had called the police because he feared the discussion -- hitherto civil -- might turn violent. Chambers explained, "Unfortunately, rather than step in and arrest our attackers, the police stood by while the University said we, the peaceful ones, had to shut down because WE were creating an unsafe environment. ... Our protests that the CRs were peacefully demonstrating while the leftists got violent fell upon deaf ears."
The university allowed a handful of violent students to decide which political views could or could not be expressed on campus. This is called a "heckler's veto"; it is the last resort of those who cannot win an argument through facts or reason.
Halvorssen commented, "Subsequently, in a frightening betrayal of their fiduciary duty and their obligations to the Bill of Rights, UW's Board of Regents released an open letter condemning the College Republicans for being 'hurtful' while failing to mention the counter-demonstrators' disruption of the College Republicans' peaceful expression of their political views on a matter of pressing public concern."
The University of Washington is not alone.
-- The University of California-Irvine shut down its bake sale as discriminatory.
-- Northwestern University ordered students to cease selling cookies or face the police.
-- Southern Methodist University closed the bake sale after 45 minutes because it created an "unsafe" environment.
-- William and Mary officials -- claiming to be "shocked and appalled" -- also cut off the cookies.
Clearly, universities don't like the affirmative action bake sales. One reason: The sales, like that at Indiana University, often feature petitions "to ban the collection of racial data, particularly in the admissions and hiring processes."
But most of all, the politically correct do not like being publicly mocked and revealed as ridiculous.
FIRE is performing the valuable task of shining a bright light on the viciousness with which the PC respond to mockery. Its campaign "will include mailings to alumni, parents, university donors, and state legislators."
Meanwhile the most effective thing the rest of us can do is to keep laughing.
Boss Tweed -- that symbol of political corruption from 19th century New York -- used to rail against cartoonists who parodied him without pause. Tweed knew he could politically survive anything except being the brunt of jokes. As with Tweed, so too with AA. That's the way the cookie and policy crumble.

This spotlights the growing Anti-liberty trend in colleges (that's the only thing I can label it!). I went to UNC Charlotte, and a guy got kicked out of there last month, for guess what? Hanging a U.S. flag outside his window. They said a flag would offend people (this is IN the united states!) and if he didn't remove it, he'd be expelled. What the FUCK is going on in our colleges.

I know, but it's still a genius argument! The only attack against the argument you can muster would be to attack the affirmative action policy, which is their own policy. The great thing is that it enrages them because at face value, as a bake sale, it shows everybody just how rediculous of a concept it is, but yet it's exactly what they promote, that's why they get so pissed and tear the display down, etc.

See what the fuck we have to put up with here. If your a minority, it's assumed you got to college because of Affirmative Action. I'm Latino, and I got into to college because I test in the top 90% of all college bound students in math, as a junior in high school. There are other ways to make discussion. As a leader at my campus, I have to think of many ways. And believe me, I and other people here have. To assume though that all blacks got into college by affirmative action is wrong, and I can see how this bake sale can be highly offensive, because as just a Latino, I am highly offened.

How's it new racism when it's been around for 38 years. The debate is heating up because the U.S. is more conservative. Personally, in California, Affirmative Action is dead, and yet in 1999, 3 years after it was taken out, I still got accepted into California schools. So really, what you guys are doing is making a law that's been in the book for almost 4 decades now, look like it's the only way minorities get placed into college. Many minorities earn their spot into colleges, and work hard to get there. It is you that cheapens everything, for you fail to realize this, and chalk it up as Affirmative Action.

Every minority here had an SAT of at least 1200, and a GPA average of 3.6. And every year, more minorities are accepted, and each year the classes have higher standards. This college is not an Affirmative Action school, it's a Christian Private school, that is very conservative. When Pat Buchanan came here, he loved it here. That's way I came here, and not go to a school in California, for the change in views. After being here 4 years, I can honestly say, I don't like it... lol

Yeah, and over 30,000 dollars in loans. lol. Check my finances sometimes, my grandkids will be still be paying my loans. It's worth every penny though. And trust, this school, when I was accepted at least, had no Affirmative Action policy. And what, because I am in school in Minnesota that means I got in because of Affirmative Action. Dispite the fact I got accepted in schools in California, a state that got rid of Affirmative Action, that means that I'm still a product of AA. You are a tool for conservative issues everywhere. Get a role model or something, and stop bashing others for their hardwork. Learn to accept that people don't need your great white man help to do things on their own. The money that I'm in debt is nothing to me. I've been in debt since birth, and I'll be in debt through out life with house payments, car payment, college loans, credit cards, so honestly, it doesn't even matter to me. Maybe Collen Powell is a product of AA, oh, maybe Rice, or even George P. Bush got into college 'cause his half Hispanic. I mean, this is what you are saying. The POINT of the exercise, is to show that Affirmative Action ACTUALLY denegrates the minorities it hopes to help. You seem to have caught that, but somehow it's my fault. LOL. I think you have a responsibility problem, you can't properly place blame. The problem is in the policy, not in the bake sale. Now, since this is the 4th time I've explained it, I doubt you'll still understand it. I can always hope though, which is why I put forth the effort. AA does not cheapen our work, it does not mean we are have special rights. AA was at one time done in colleges as a way of getting more minorities in college, since many intercity schools gave very poor education. This was thought as a way to make things right, by Richard Nixon no less. The actual solution would have been to make intercity school better, and improve on equal oppertunity for all people, but that would too hard, so AA was an easy answer. 30 years later, the backlash begins. Now though, many minorities are are getting into college by their own merit, not AA. California got rid of AA, and didn't see a decrease in minority college population, and actually a high rise in Asians going to college. AA is still around today, one because the biggest benefits are seen by women, and two, because it is seen as the counter to the legacy student. Many white students in college get bonus points because they had parents that went to college. Many minority students didn't. So AA makes it so that minorities can get the bonus points that many white students already gain. So maybe I should throw a bake sale too. All students who's parents attented St. Olaf before can get cookies for $.25, well others pay a dollar. Makes sense to me.

I work 60 hours a week cleaning bathrooms for the rich and licking their boots while they laugh at me and pay me less than minimum wage. I attened college full time as well. I don't have the resources to look for a scholarship, so I just decided to take out student loans. Right now I'm $123,000 in debt and I'm not even a sophomore yet!
I have a huge credit card debt, no insurance, and I am also on welfare. I'm always hungry and I've got a bad case of dandruff. I can't afford seltzin so I can't get any bitches. I also have to brush my teeth with pure baking soda so my breath smells like my refrigitaor.
I don't have a car, my bike was jacked, and my rollerblades got sand in the ball bearings. I would walk places but for some reason my legs hurt so I have to take the bus. Do you know what It's like to take the bus everywhere? It sucks.
Even though I have a hard ass life, I still manage to make long winded whiney ass posts on WCC letting people know what a hard life I lead. It sucks, but I gotta let the people know about my condition.
Seriously dude, life is tough. Nobody cares about your the shit you go through because we all go through the same shit every day...

It basically, as a fundamental principle, says that Minorities aren't as good as whites, because they have a different skin color (that's it's SOLE measurable determining factor when it kicks into play)... it says, as a point of it's existance, that Minorities aren't as good as whites, so therefore, it's necessary.
All I'm saying is, you should be outraged at it.

I gave you history, and I even gave you something you can't even give, a better solution to AA. What more do you want from me. To admit AA is racist against minorities, NO. It's not, it is a quick fix that should have been handle different, but it's easier to do, and cost less. Education is the better way to go, but it takes too much time, and cost too much, and most right wings like the education dept. anyways. AA is not racist, just a very bad idea that is a quick fix for a way bigger problem.

One more thing, I'm a person who has seen, faced, lived in and suffered from people being racist to me. Been called names, discriminated against, pull over by cops for nothing. At my own school a police officer who doesn't even patrol this campus stops me to just ask me if I go here, and I was with my two white friends, and neither one got asked a thing. I got tons of stories, but you know what, with racism, you can get outrage, because then you put yourself on that persons level. You must learn that some people are just dump. You can't change them, they don't want to be changed. So all you can do is try to talk to them, if they don't want to listen, that is their choice, report them to the City Hall so that they wouldn't do this again to another person because of their skin, and wash your hands with it.

I told you, make the schools equal, not the so called white school better than the so called black school, or latino school. Make all schools equal, poor school, rich schools, black schools, latino schools, white schools, middle class schools. Make all those schools have great education, like the rich white ones, and then we'll talk. Until, give me my 5 extra points that another person gets for being a legacy student and give me those 5 points that I wouldn't get because my school isn't as good as the person sitting next to me, and give me my 5 points. Why don't you make a bake sale for those legacy students, they get 5 points, and no one talks about them. I know I got 5 points, but I was one of the top math students in the nation, I would get in anyways, so I don't trip. But I offer you a solution, an alternative, something I want, I don't want affirmative action, I would vote yes on 209 again to get rid of it again in California. You didn't even read my post, for fear of what you'd read. Read it again, I mention poor schools. Hell I want Tom to go to college, Lord knows he needs something. And minorities don't overcome. We just get handouts. Well I think you'd believe that without affirmative action. I know you would, because if not affirmative action, you'd be talking about welfare, or you'd be talking about something else. It's easy for you to look at us from the outside and critize. That's way I honestly don't care about changing your mind. You have a mind set, just like me, and it's not changing. I have my mind set, and honestly, the I agree with some stuff. But the devil's advicate in me loves to make you think. But I have realized that your mind doesn't want to change, and that's fine, because mine wouldn't either. Just read my post above, and you'll see how I think. I'm serious, make poor schools equal to rich schools, and send Tom to college. That's it, that's all I want. Not affirmative action, not hand outs or welfare. All I want is equal schools. Is that too much to ask for. Oh, and to get rid of legacy points. Which is also unfair, you get points for being born to college graduates. See, wouldn't that make the system a lot fairer.
