Title: The FINAL DubCC Top 100 West Coast Songs of all time
Post by: R-Tistic on February 11, 2004, 12:36:37 AM
Damn...after houuuuurs of work, this list is complete. I'll admit, I probably could have used a better ratings system, but it was hard to come up with a system that would work from the type of voting and all that went down. I already know that everybody will say "that's higher than that?" and "why did this song make it when this song didn't?" but remember that this isn't my top 100, but a top 100 according to everybody who voted. To be real, I think 1-30 is very accurate, but a lot of shit further down the list gets a little bit scattered because the voting results were damn near tied for a lot of the last ones. Also, I will admit there may be mistakes in here, but nothing major.

This is open for much discussion...try not to drop so many "How did (I Luv it) make it higher than (The Watcher)?" - (Place any song in the parentheses) but rather just keep it a coo discussion...I kno you will probably see some songs you haven't heard in a long time and all. Also, this list has to be a true reflection of those who really listen to West Coast music, because if I took this same poll somewhere that wasn't a west coast site, the results would be COMPLETELY different.

This list is cool. You could only put it together with what you got and this is better than if it was posted for people all over because it wouldn't be a true west coast list. The list made me realize the west coast has really made contributions to the hip-hop culture, even if people don't want to recognize us for the talent we have. I'm lookin at the top 100 like we have plenty of real songs, and hopefully new ones are comin in the future.....

Thanks 4 tha support and all, and thanks for not complainin or bullshittin like most people do on these types of forums.

True, yeah most songs on here are pretty old, which is bad in a way because it is showin how the west hasn't been puttin it down as hard.

What are the shockers to y'all? I was suprised by a few things...
-Next Episode was #31, but Still Dre was 15. I always thought of Next Episode was the bigger single, probably because it was the club hit. And also, G'd up and I luv it were higher than Next Episode. I was suprised I luv it was so high...thas one of my favorite songs ever, but it seems like it only was big on the west coast.
-There were a lot of album cuts and non-singles that made the 100 over songs that were big smashes on the radio, like "Keep ya head up" which was at 101.

Just for the stats, there were 531 total songs that were nominated. If I had done a different ratings system, and if more people had voted, a lot of things would be in different order, especially past #30.

I like all those songs, but why is the majority L.A. rappers?

I got love for Cube and D/J Quik, but I think THE BAY AREA has more classics over-all,in my opinoin.

Maybe this list should be re-edited.

I'll admit that I may be somewhat biased because I am from L.A., so I nominated mostly L.A. songs because grew up with em and I like them better. But u must admit L.A. songs nationwide did have a muuuuch greater impact on Hip Hop, and most people who aren't from Northern Cal like L.A. music better. Commercially we did have much more classic.

While I respect your opinoin [ I do love all those songs], I still think you should of included more BAY AREA rap songs like DON'T GIVE ME NO BAMMER WEED,1 LUV,DON'T FIGHT THE FEELIN',NIGGAZ DONE CHANGED.  Also, you hardly got any PysKromento [Sac] sickness rap songs on there. I see like one or two Brotha Lynch Hung songs [which is nice],but you don't have anything there by CBO,XRAIDED [one of the hardest lyricists of all time] or Sixc on there.

Maybe we should split the list into 2 different threads to have a more fair & balance point of view.  One for SO CAL and NOR CAL.

It's up to you [maybe you are an editor here or something],but I'm new around here so I don't know.

Oh see, thing is I didn't make up the list with songs I like. I nominated songs just as everybody else did, and I gave my songs the same amount of points as what everybody else's got. So it's not like I just put songs on there that I like. The reason it's so much L.A. is because thas what people were nominatin. Also, there were like 500+ songs when I was done, and it was probably 50-100 or more Bay songs that didn't make it. Thing is, L.A. songs were more commercial, and many people voted for the same songs. But for Bay songs, most nominated songs were never big on TV or radio, so people were nominatin a lot of songs that didn't make it.

You might be...u gotta remember that many people on this site saw that as an offending song, and even people like me recognize it was lyrically tite adn all, but overall as a song it is not one of my favorites, mainly because of the beat and all.

Thing is, he had some songs nominated on there, but he has had a lot songs, and everybody voted for different songs from him so nothin went to the top 100. He had seven songs nominated. Golden Child woulda been about 102.

Behind the walls wasn't even nominated. I think "Gettin it" was remembered because it is one of his biggest radio hits, and many people from this board weren't really into Too Short when he first came out, I kno I didn't get into rap til 93 and Gettin it was the first big song that I remember him havin.

The list is cool, but still missing ALOT of songs, I think its funny how songs such as "Pistol Grip Pump" and others (which may seem a little biased, so I won't mention them  ;D) didn't make your list. The thing about a FINAL list is that the West is still making music and will continue to do so to make something final is a bit pre-mature. I think that alot of Bay area songs should of been included. I think maybe top 100 songs every 5 years would of been better, but list like these always have a large margin of error, because it's hard to really to be open and non objective.

I had voted for Pistol grip pump but it didn't crack the 100. The list woulda been a lot better if more people had voted. I mean there will never be a final, or correct list, but this is the final for right now. And yeah, you can't do a list like this but every few years, unless u just update the one u have, and I am not going to do that anytime soon.
Also, a few people said Bay Area songs shoulda been included, but there weren't many people who voted for the same songs. There were a LOOOOT of Bay Area songs nominated that didn't hit the list because only one or two people voted for em. And also, not enough people voted period, and some of the people sayin that this and that shoulda been on the list, didn't vote.

Damn, I think i just forgot about Ras. There's just way too many artists, u just forget about sum of them or sum songs u actually consider classics

Also, I think Ras is better than what his songs may show him to be if u get what I am sayin.

I agree. He never really had great beats. Another thing is that Ras' songs aren't really "bumpable" if you know what I mean. The classics such as "Nothin' But A G Thang", "California Love", etc. can be heard in clubs, parties, rides, and so on. Ras songs ain't. That's why I'm a lil' surprised "Ghetto Fabulous" wasn't nominated.

Yeah basically that's the deal. Ghetto Fabulous was nominated but it didn't break the 100.

Now if we did the most well thought out, most lyrical songs, in rap history, then ras might get 5 or 10 in the top 100.

Damn, I was talkin to somebody today in Florida, where I go to school, and he is from Compton. We were talkin bout west coast rap, and he was like "man when I do this party, I'ma try to have all west coast songs. Matter of fact, you know dubcc.com? They have a top 100 west coast songs of all time on there, and I was seein songs on there I hadn't heard in years! So I am gonna get a grip of songs from there" and I was like ohhh shit....I am the one who put it together, I didn't even kno he came to the site, so it was just ironic as hell. I don't even think he posts, he just reads the news and all. So I bet it's people from all over who are seein the list. This is a great thing.

Appreciate the work, but I'm scratching my head because of the voters...

there needs to be

dove shack

KAM
twinz
bad azz

Skee Lo definetly deserves his props for I Wish

if youre talking best WESTCOAST hip hop... it needs to be more than just gangsta shit. This list is really the top 100 dpg/dre songs ... jurassic 5, more dilated, black eyed peas...it all needs to be there, of course, this board, and the site associated with this board consist of just gangsta rap... so what's all there is a sign of the music people enjoy, but props on the work. I just feel it's not a great representation of the whole westcoast.

That's probably a bit true, but that's just the people who voted. Me personally, I grew up in LA city, and I started listenin to rap in 1992-1993, and we all know what was goin around then as far as music. Chronic, Doggystyle, Ice Cube, etc etc. so you know that everybody in LA was playin 90% gangsta music. I still like a lot of different types of West coast rap, such as my cousin Murs and what he does, but overall, my favorite songs are usually gangsta rap tracks.

Most people are saying there should be one or two by this guy or that guy but no one realises thats impossible with a list of 100 because if everyone on the list has 2 songs nominated that means there will be 50 rappers on it. Which means that there is always gonna be some people left off it. So there is really no way to stop that.

Also songs by Dre ect are gonna be be nominated more than cuts by Bay rappers because they are big hits which people remember more, and as R-Tistic said people wernt voting for the same songs which is because none of them were as big or as remembered as Nuthin But A G Thang/Regulate.

I think the list does a good job of highlighting the "mainstream" hits and other underground classics.

Yeah that's basically what happens. I remember when I was doing it, there were some artists who would have 15 votes, but 10 of them would be for different songs so there was no one song that made it. That's what happens with those artists, because most people who are fans of them will not have the same favorite songs.

I've been to this thread so many times just to check the list from time to time to see what other songs I'm missing. I'm in the midst of making an mp3 disc of all 100 songs so I can hear them in continuous play. I'll let everyone know when I'm done, and might be able to hook up the discs if there's enough demand.
