Title: 213 Sued for Copyright Infringment...By Battlecat?
Post by: ··: O.G Kody™ :·· on September 04, 2004, 10:56:41 AM
Not sure if this has been posted, so just ignore if it has.

Taken from PR Newswire (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/09-03-2004/0002244089&EDATE)

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Documents filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California on Thursday September 2, 2004, indicate that the members of the Group 213, including Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Nate Dogg, as well as, the record Label TeeVee Toons (TVT Records) have been sued for copyright infringement, in connection with the recently released album "213 The Hard Way."
In the suit filed by MZZ, LLC, the company states that three tracks on the album infringe copyrights for works written by well known producer DJ Battlecat, whose work includes hits recorded by artists including Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, Lucy Pearl, Brian McKnight, Xhibit, WC and Faith Evans. MZZ, LLC and Battlecat are represented in the litigation by Farhad Novian, Esq. and Josh Mendelsohn, Esq. of Novian & Novian, LLP, in Century City California.

Has anyone got any further info on this?

What the fuck is this about? Could this be why he's known as "B-Sharp" on the credits instead of Battlecat?

Very strange indeed.  You have to keep in mind, though, that most famous musicians or entertainers are constantly involved in court drama.  So we dont' know the whole story, and also keep in mind that any business decision done by anybody involved with 213 lands Snoop, Warren, and Nate in court.  So it could have been Snoop fucked Battlecat over, or it could have been Nate Dogg's manager fucked Battlecat over.  Of course they're talking about beats, so you'd have to imagine that Snoop would know damn well who produced what.  Snoop doesn't write the liner notes, though, and Snoop doesn't sign the royalty checks... so ultimately, we still dont' know who's responsible or what the deal is.  We'll have to wait for more info.

Maybe they didn't have permission to release the Battlecat released tracks or something... But this is some weird shit.

213 may have taken the easy way out when making the The Hard Way, according to DJ Battlecat. The producer behind tunes for Busta Rhymes, Brian McKnight, Xzibit, WC and Faith Evans filed a copyright-infringement suit against 213 members Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Nate Dogg and their record label on Thursday for allegedly using his work on three songs without permission. ...

Maybe Battlecat had given them some beats to listen to and work with, but they never payed him or cleared releasing the stuff.
