Mutt Lange is up there if you wanna talk successful. Who else can claim to be part of so many daimond albums. Shaniah Twain (two diamond and on 8 platiunm), AC/DC (Back in Black went over 40 platinum world wide), Def Leppard (a couple daimond efforts), a bag load of 8 and 9 platinum albums.

Anyways, Quik has got my vote. Warren is still one of my favorite producers of all time, but he hardly produces nowadays.

*edit* still cant believe none of yall haven't mentioned RZA... i mean 36 Chambers, Forever, OB4CL, Liquid Swords....blah.

South: definitely the Organized Noize team and Outkast...goddamn, listen to "ATLiens" or "Soul Food"

Primo is great but he's used the same formula since "No More Mr. Nice Guy", little variety there, even though it's mostly great material

9th Wonder & Kanye West could be up there in a few years

there's loads of honorable mentions: Warren G, Large Pro, DJ Shadow, The Alchemist, DJ Paul, Juju, Q-Tip etc.

The west cats, DJ Quik, Warren G, 92-95 Dre get props, but for me none of them are better than the five I listed.

At least one of 9th Wonder, Madlib and Kanye will probably make there way into that five as time goes on.

Outside of straight hiphop DJ Shadow got trip hop on lock, and that dude from Portishead fucks me up with his production every time.

The reason I think Dre is #1 is becuase he can make a beat cleaner than anyone else. Every instrument is at the exact level it should be. He gives an overall better production than anyone else in hip hop.

Ok that's cool, I thought it may have been based on the common misinterpretation that Jazzy Jeff actually produced all of "The Magnificent".

On the whole Dre thing. I don't see how the fact that his tracks are cleaner makes him the best producer. Hiphop is meant to have a certain grittyness to it, that's what makes it hiphop. I based my decision purely on the end product, and the producers ability to fit tracks to the artist that they are producing for. And for me, Dre doesn't get near my top five in those categories since 95.
